#server-feedback

Easy way to fix this. Have a botspam channel where they can use a command '!listing' to trigger the bot in their DM
Have it direct people who try to dm it with no messaging to that channel
Marketplace Releases/Updates Channel (name it whatever). No discussion allowed. Just postings of assets on MP.
Would be good for those of us who primarily use Discord, barely ever glance at Epic Launcher.
Would cause separation from #released also, which gets quite a bit of traffic
Don't see much point if there's no discussion allowed, the discussion/feedback is interesting
Also, channels that just spam announcements tend to be very dry and unappealing, which I think would discourage people from looking at it
I wouldn't say no to a channel to shamelessly plug marketplace releases though
@chilly ivy how about automating the post removal?
something like:
- make post
- bot PM you a confirmation with post ID and Remove hash
- pm bot an ID and Remove hash to delete the post
/delete #a115bh14 #5d040067b36b91e0723d57d5fb4e5ce5 (Mega file sharing uses something like that for file-key links, but there hash is used to decode the files)
and since it's in bot messages you don't need to remember it
and it probably will be a good idea to write ID in the post (at least partially, like 4 last characters)
Yeah that's something I'm looking at for the job board update. ๐
Definitely a good idea.
shouldn't https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/blog/featured-free-marketplace-content---june-2019 be in #unreal-news ?
Done. ๐
Can the 10 minute wait time be removed?
I think, that would be a bad idea
why?
Well, some of us remember why it was instated
Ye lets keep it at that
Server wide events?
Make an asset event?
Make a system event?
Make something event?
Im not sure i understand what you mean?
Like are you talking about some sort of Game Jam type thing but with assets/systems?
Maybe something like that?
could be kinda interesting, maybe hard to setup but, possible.
could reward the people or person who wins these events. Either held monthly or weekly.
So you'll chip $5 into the pool first, yea
I got five on it
Organising prizes is the hard part.
Also then we have to rate the submissions somehow.
If we have 1000 submissions how long do you think it would take for us to go through them all...
True but the issue being that it takes time to do stuff, time that we dont have.
If you seriously would like to run community contests and are happy to do that then we can discuss it further.
I didn't say run, but I got $5 on it and I'll volunteer as judge
Ill bring it up and see what we can work out then. It would be great to do stuff like that to boost engagement.
We would most likely be contacting Epic for prizes. We would not do a cash pool.
whats your paypal I'll put $5 in the treasury
I guess I could be a judge too
If you have too many submissions and multiple judges you could do something like blocks in the World Cup and assign equal portions of the entries to each judge to cull it down to say ten each and then have each judge judge them or a final judge judge that pool
Well we got two volunteer judges here and 1k entries
And already $5 in the pool
Since I came up with the idea, Can I have a seat on the judging pannel ? ๐
and if chipping in for an overall prize was a thing, I also have my $5
but I also thought as in, a special discord role, maybe some money, maybe some marketplace creators could volunteer their stuff as a prize too? Like Humble Bundle have games volunteered into their bundles etc.
but yeah, Im sure others have cool ideas for it too. But it was all just an idea I thought could be fun
I think prize pools should be in dallars only.
the Slacking Dallar Jam

Buy-in to participate is 250 dallar, first place gets 50%, second 35%, third 20% of the pot
nah thats mad. Defeats the point of getting everyone involved.
no fees
turns people away
and would also expect a reward worth much more than they put in
and the time spent on the project
this would be the discord only. It wouldnt be insane and shown all over epic games's page etc
idk what you were thinking but I had a bit of fun in mind with a little reward for peoples good work
anyways, we'll see what the mods say about it. But will be cool I hope.
Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment
you can't be disappointed if you assume nothing good ever happens
you can if something good does
Cynicism abounds.
true im often disappointed by good things happening to others
back in school my classmates used to call me mr scrooge
because I was good with money
Thanks for adding the user mentions, to looking for talent/work !
However it doesn't work on mobile, an easy fix for that would be taking the @mention out of the embed and sending it in the regular content of the message, for example it would show:
Unrealbot BOT Today at 00:00
From @ruby schooner
<Insert embed here>
I know it can be done easily in discord.py by doing await send("regular text part of the message", embed=whichever_constructed_embed)
And both are in the same message
Not sure what library unreal bot uses and if it can be done with it though :/
It's Discord.js and we are well aware of how to move the mention before the embed.
@chilly ivy tried to solve it without that, however it's a bug with the way each Discord Client caches users.

Greetings.
We probably all noticed the Nitro Booster role, and the "pink" people. From my perspective it looks awful. Also no real benefit of showing people who has it.
It may be selfish, but i'd love to set this role to the same color as other generic users have. (this role can't be removed)
@chilly ivy obviously can't do such a dictatorship move. So I'm asking for people's opinion, what do you think?
I was asked to come make a statement.
The only thing I agree on is the "Hot Pink" color for this role.
Otherwise. RE: Same Color as "normies" . Then there's no point in people even bothering to Nitro Boost on any server (not just this one, but especially this one)
Failing that. If same color was enforced as normals. Then you'd need to do this:
Otherwise, no one would bother Boosting any Discord Server as they wouldn't get any benefit from it at all.
And if people don't boost server. Server doesn't get any benefits.
So seems like a lose-lose there.
What about the actual perks for boosting? The role is one of many benefits.
(this is just overall how things are playing out across multiple servers though)
Only thing I know I personally get is a special color, role, and icon next to my name that no one will ever see because my name starts with a "V"
and people force their stuff with !
Yeah, it's definitely more for the server than individual
That's the point of boosting, to give benefits to everyone on a server.
And I think that's the point though
It's the "collective" mentality of it all
You are doing something for the "greater good"
It's designed to feel like sharing your Nitro with others, in a sense.
Right
Yeah, and that's the point. I boosted this server since, of all servers, this one could probably use them the most. Like 50mb upload cap for people sharing UE4 files.
You aren't exactly doing it for yourself primarily, however there are some perks for individuals as well. So it's a win-win
Except...for this Hot Pink color
Yeah, I'd like to make it something more on brand for us.
But I was interested to see what people in the community thought.
I think slowly, more and more people will boost the server if there's an advantage to them
This is all still new
Yes.
And almost every server that has been boosted is still on level 1
Because #1 barely anyone knows wtf to do
#2 how to do it
#3 what they get out of it
I'm holding off on encouraging people to boost this server until we can prepare all the graphic assets, including custom emojis. I want people to get the most out of the perks if they decide to boost us.
Well, there's also one HUGE problem
you have 5000 online people
No one's ever going to see our Badges
Definitely not mine
So that's one perk that's basically non-existent on huge servers
Some have started doing the Role Separation above regular Online Members
It brings more visibility about Boosting anyway
We've been discussing whether or not to show boosters in the member list.
Just need to figure out what's right for this server. On the other hand, it's not an optional feature, so we have to remember that once more people learn about boosting, the perks will become a new expectation people have when joining the server.
So there's a balance to be had, I think.
Yeah, on big server, the only advantage individuals get are the "special colors" unless you get separated from regular online members above them.
It's one of those things you're going to just have to try and see how it plays out
TBH
on this 1440p monitor
(not sure if it's my dpi on discord or what)
but I wouldn't even be able to see my name anyway
Since bots would be above Boosters
But still, a little scroll
If we do decide to display the role in the members list, it will be after we create all the new graphics to match the perks. I don't think it makes sense to show boosters above regular users unless the benefits they bring to the community are clear and fully taken advantage of.
Yup, I can agree to that. As long as it happens ๐
It would suck not taking advantage of the new server perks
You probably don't need 50 new emojis
But the animated one to start would be nice
Regardless of all that. There would be no point in boosting this server, unless you wanted a Hot Pink name
Since Adding animated icon, background splash, new emojis...will take quite a bit of time
Right. We'll definitely embrace server boosting - it's just a matter of figuring out to what extent we'll embrace it.
Regarding the graphics-related perks (icon, banner, emojis, etc.), I'll probably hold off on doing any of those. I have plans to update our brand this year.
Don't want to do that work twice.
@fast skiff Many of the boost perks are new, even to partners.
As a partner server, we will always have:
- 128 kbps voice quality
- Custom splash background
- Vanity URL
The rest of the server boost perks are new to us.
for level 1
all of level 2
minus URL
So, Boosted Server still get quite a bit of benefits even if Partnered/Verified
huh, i thought partners got everything by default
This is mostly all new things
And now allows random servers to get Partner/Verified stuff
Here, hope this helps: https://i.imgur.com/w3k5REJ.png
In that image I highlighted all the current partner benefits.
Many of these benefits didn't exist before for anyone.
Basically the playing field has changed significantly.
What were once benefits exclusive to partners and verified servers, are now available to anyone through server boosting.
Of course, partners and verified servers still retain all of their previous perks, regardless of their boost level.
So in our case, boosting would bring all the non-highlighted benefits above to everyone on our server.
As long as you continue to boost us, that is.
The support page explains everything. Highly recommend reading it if you want to grasp the system, it's quite a bit!
TIL that partners down't get all the stuff for free
Understandable. I've talked to a lot of people who find the system a bit confusing.
Hm, now I want to see my name
I have heard rumblings that partners are getting new exclusive perks in the future, but we don't yet know what they are or when they're coming.
There's another badge in your profile that evolves over time the longer you boost. Reminds me of Twitch sub badges.
Yeah, I agree it's annoying that people hoist their usernames with special characters.
We don't currently have a policy against doing this, but that is subject to change in the future. Bots can be configured to prevent it.
Aye, but in my case, I still wouldn't ever see my badge on here
Display the role apart from others?
Yeah, that's what we were talking about earlier
I mentioned above we are discussing that. ๐
ah ^^
Only real way in large servers
Yeah. And just to reiterate what I said earlier, if we do decide to display the role in the members list, we'll wait until we've created assets for all the perks. I don't think it makes sense to display boosters above normal users unless it's obvious to the rest of the community how they're benefiting from the boosts.
Well, guess I'll be seeing my badge this time next year
I do appreciate that some of you thought to boost us first, though. โค
A pointless observation, but the user list in general is frankly useless on a server this big
I guess the solution would be if Discord sorted the list based on who is the most active currently (but that's not something this server could change)
The only real problem is that this purple is just too purple.
Good thing it's pink
Maybe Fuchsia is more accurate
The more people hate on it...the more I don't mind being pink anymore though
it's clearly pinkle
pink is one of my fav colors
yeah, that color is eating my eyes, and...since i'm using compact view it looks like this:
Fuchsia is horrible...glad it's not that (actually looks like magenta)
and, thank you for boosting the server
"comfy" is a recession not an evolution :>
!suggestion #looking-for-talent
I feel like the bot is a big hindrance for me when it comes to getting my poster set up. Not only does it make me hurry myself up, it also cuts me from a lot of other opportunities like; setting up a well-formated formalia, attachments such as links or photos from my own software and so on.
I suggest you change it up.
The instructions tell you to format your text before submitting it.
You shouldn't write your post for the first time when contacting the bot.
Links should also be supported by default.
I don't see images being needed here, you can post these properly on whatever website you are linking.
That said, we are planning on adjusting the job board: https://goo.gl/forms/WHgcMUZxEy1rqJtz1
Feel free to fill out the survey for it
@blissful quiver
There is a channel suited for devlogs?(where I can share my future devlogs about Gourmet Legacy).
#work-in-progress
Thanks!
We had a bad experience with a looking-for-talent person and wanted to warn other potential victims. Any worn path for doing this?
@native orchid We take a neutral stance when it comes to issues involving personal experiences with other community members you engage with via the Job Board. We advise all who wish to participate with other community members there that they take every precaution they can to ensure their experience is smooth and legitimate.
We cannot validate any claims made by either party and therefore any issues that arise through your participation in the Job Board with other members of the community is your responsibility.
That's a head in the sand stance to take. There's an injustice in your corner of the internet, the community should own it.
Yes i understand your frustration but the issue becomes that if we were to take account based on what people accuse each other of doing it would just end up being abused.
We are here to Moderate what happens on this Server, anything outside of it is not within our ability to handle.
Imho, Devils position seems correct to me. There would be need hard proof, tug of war of who is right or perhaps its a isolated incident. Mods arent lawyers or legal advisors
There is a forum thread on the ue4 forums tho
^^^
I understand the position and it makes sense at scale. If you ran a candy store and some creep was using it as a way to stake-out and stalk young kids, just because the stalking isn't happening in your facility doesn't mean you don't have a responsibility to end the facilitation.
At some point there needs to be an infraction system or some way to report scammers. I'll have to talk to Nick about this at the upcoming UE4 meetup.
@native orchid You couldn't work this out with the specific person? Misunderstanding possible? Before spreading stuff here or on the forums all avenues should be pursued. I'm not saying you've not done this... just a general thought because once a rep gets out, its hard to fix.
As an incredibly reasonable person being entirely reasonable, no I could not. I'm really not interested in smearing a reputation or getting vengeance, I just don't want other professionals to waste their most valuable asset, time.
That's a good point.
I won't beat a dead horse here, I appreciate the replies and understand the current stance. The future of the server and/or any changes to rules are probably better discussed in person. This is a larger conversation than my isolated incident. Supporting a business off of UE4 contract work since 2015, I know that I'd want to know about potentially shady contractors.
@native orchid There was an ancient scam thread on official forum. Perhaps you might want to post there with proof for it would be literally the only thing you are able to do, when bumping into dubious freelancer and desiring to affect his/her reputation while also warning the others. I bet that if a dedicated channel existed for such kind of reports or disputes, it would turn into drama fest within days.
@silver heath Actaully, there is a group, that are working on a blacklist. Last I heard was, they were working on a website to , and post those people who cheat others.
Question still remains how much of that is true.
With enough time on your hands, you could relatively easily make up some stories.
Not saying that non of the brought up scams did never happen.
Aye, there would most certainly be trolls who will just upvote because they just don't like a certain person
And so plenty of "fake reports"
The main point is that we, as mods of this Discord Server, can't really prove either site.
And most of you can't either. So if there is such a blacklist, please don't believe what stands on it without doing some research on your own
I'll assume that the UE4-forum condone this, so I would suggest people to use that, and hope for the best.
https://forums.unrealengine.com/community/got-skills-looking-for-talent/14485-scam-reports-tips
Trying to get a team together? Here is the place to post!
rofl ๐
But seriously. Like, there's definitely more than just those 6 right
And it'll just be randoms posting
And no one is going to want to true-verify reports
well mouth to mouth, still works
Which means, any reports posted won't be fully and exhaustively investigated
I'm not trying to do CPR here
rofl ๐
Anyway, the problem isn't really that there are bad/dumb people and everyone should know about it. It's that there's no way to 100% verify truthfulness of reports
And so there will be some folks unknowingly and falsely persecuted
the way I see it is, that next time Moderators are getting approach by a user, then they could either post that link, or add it to the rules etc.
only a suggestion
Well, when you all get the FBI to verify reports, I'll be onboard
Right now though, it'll be more like "he said, she said" reporting
never gonna happen, with the FBI
But also, if you get a refund from your bank, paypal or whatever, then the case is closed in my eyes
The people on that list
haha
@rich sky There is like 3 or so more with proper reports on the last page
Also I won't link a thread/list that might just share a fake-report
Every user here has to make sure that they take care of themselves.
There are a lot of things you can do to stay save. I'm a contractor myself, I've been through my fair share of contracts.
Im also a contractor and ive had trouble in the past but ive learnt from those mistakes and become better at identifying possible scammers and generally bad people to work with.
It is not an easy problem for us Moderators to solve on your behalf. You have to shoulder the responsibility for who you deal with. We dont have the resources to properly vet people for you and infact i dont even think that should be our job.
Also done lots of contract work. Best advice I can offer:
- Have a solid contract - canโt stress this enough
- Read contracts carefully before signing them
- Say no to suspicious offers
- Is the potential client hesitant to sign a contract, unclear on payment terms or project requirements, asking you to trust them, or difficult to reach? Say no and move on.
I should also add: if youโre ever uncertain about a clause in a contract, donโt be afraid to ask questions before signing.
Iโve known too many people who signed contracts they didnโt understand.
I paid @deft raft $100,000 to make me a game and he took my money and just slapped me with it
my own money
I now live in a cardboard box
still sometimes he comes by and slaps me with a few hundos
would not recommend 0/10
unrealbot looking for talent is kinda broken, he is always posting invalid links to people
We are aware, its an issue with Discord itself.
@brittle orchid Most satisfying slap ever.
What if there is a job posting with a link to a UE4 demo project that contains malware?
Then don't behave like your grandma and stop clicking every download link on the net?
lol
But when I see that UE4 icon and that folder structure, it seems safe.
If this happens to anyone, it'll be Allar
If you happen to download malware, notify us so we can delete the post and ban the person
Ok, the line in the sand has been drawn.
always run stuff from untrusted sources in a sandbox
Can you run a UE4 game in a sandbox?
I mean you can run anything in a sandbox environment
Technically, I mean at anywhere near frame time
needs to be able to use the gpu of course
sandboxie works, the new windows sandbox probably does too but it fails to launch on my pc
Most of the time I play random game jams I do so in a safe environment
like a recently formatted pc
which is why I had to keep setting up my stream for an hour every fucking time
sandboxie is actually one of the nicest things around
it's not shitty and slow like a real vm would be, but it isolates everything the programs write to disk and the registry so you can see and discard it
it just dies saying it can't find a file with no further info
and googling the issue leads to many people with the same error and no solution
To help people streaming Unreal development it would be really cool if a bot moved them to the top of the server after Epic Staff so people could see who is current streaming, then remove them once they stop. I think it would help a lot of people find streams that are active and help build up communities.
The trouble with the streaming channel is that if the person has stopped streaming you find a dead stream maybe the bot could report active streams every few minutes in the streaming channel another idea.
as a list of links with out all the images
How would you suggest we detect that someone needs to be assigned such a role?
I mean, maybe varifying with someone if you stream
or have been streaming for a while
or have x amount of followers
I mean, I wouldnt mind handling requests for streaming roles
being the one who checks and assigns said role if they meet a criteria
but of course, would be cooler if a bot could do it
UE4 has its own category on Twitch. If you're looking for people to watch, look there. It will have everyone here plus those that aren't part of the Discord server.
The issue being that we only allow Streamers to post in #share-your-stream if they are doing UE4 Dev. If we were to assign the role based on the fact that anyone is Streaming then we would have random Streams appearing at the top.
As @unkempt tinsel mentioned you can always go directly to the source.
A theoretical bot could check the stream title for ue4/unreal
But also not everyone streams in the Unreal Engine category, since most game dev is done under Science and Tech
What if you have a bot that gets from twitch people streaming in the ue4 catergory and promotes them
If you want to do this, you'd need a bot that takes an auth from Discord and connects it to Twitch.
And if that Twitch account is online it would check the connected Discord account.
However even if we manage to set this up (that's not just a Discord bot then anymore), the person would always be listed even if they aren't streaming UE4.
And if we lock it to the "Game" they play being UE4, people can still abuse it. And we already have this cool ! stuff going on, so I assume that would be the first person to just fake stream ue4 all the time.
the people who change their name to an exclamation mark amuse me
they absolutely must appear at the top of the list and be seen!
why do you want to be at the top of the list
that makes more strange people send you strange messages
The first one in the list did it to laugh at people who tried to be at the top
Basically being one themselves ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
I think everyone should change their name to include an exclamation mark so that everyone can be on the top!
I think I should the bot auto rename people who have an ! at the start of their name
But then again, I really don't care that much.
replace it with a Z
Isnt there a #share-your-stream channel for this purpose..?
at 1080p I don't see any, the bots are at the bottom for me
Why? are they better than nonstreamers?
Imho adding Streamers as user catagory is a gateway to add more and more groups
And tbh, i dont see a reason why forum mods are listed in their own group as well, discord mods and epic staff I can understand
it's so that people can access us easily
I get a lot of traffic through here when people need help
Oke, I did not know that
Yeah we have a lot of requests for modifying stuff on the forums
Me less, cause no one knows I'm a forum mod

Listing the bots is mainly so people can easier access their comments (via dm etc.)
Everyone goes to Luos
Although the Giveaway one is a little dead
Idk, I would be fine with auto posting to #steaming if someone comes online
Giveawaybot was used once, then relegated to linger in the channel for all eternity
I would just need to look into how Discord.js and TwitchAPI can be nicely used for this
I like the idea, I will see what the others say and maybe I have some time this weekend to quickly add that functionality
Why not make one with c++? ๐
Why would anyone do that?
for the challenge
Sorry guys I am just catching up to the questions, Discord has the ability called streamer mode when you stream Unreal engine after adding to your "games list" it shows what you are streaming, so the user that is streaming info Says they are streaming Unreal Engine 4 or UE4 I assumed a bot could be programmed to see the temporary change in the users status and that would move them into a temporary role of "unreal streamer" or "live streamer" as soon as I close down my stream my status shows nothing else going on because I do no have any other games added to my discord account as something that I stream, in my case I only stream Unreal Engine work. Now this is not an original idea I have seen this work on other servers, on a generic game dev discord that would boost up anyone that was streaming since that site covered any game development engine. This is how I assumed it worked. I don't think you would have to do anything with the Twitch API or anything but have the bot scanning the user list ever X amount of minutes for people that connected Unreal Engine to the "games" list and were currently Playing Unreal Engine.
I will show turn it on now so you can see what i mean once I turn on Unreal you can see my status will change.
Oh I forgot to mention its not just the Unreal Engine that has to be open it is OBS
So right now as soon I as turn on OBS I see a message appear in Discord Streamer Mode is enabled
as soon as I start the stream you can see at my user name UE4 and that I am streaming
Unreal Engine editor binaries will have the name they were given, so this doesn't actually work
so it will show as 'PROJECTNAME Editor' when you add it as the 'game' you are playing
you see my user name?
down in the user list it is based on the stream title
not the exe
but people can name their stream anything and run something completely unrelated
The info is based on how I have named the stream, not sure if anyone can see that I assume everyone could
I can't see it on account of how long the user list is
yes and those people would get booted from the streamer list if they were reported
I can see it if I open your details panel though
who is going to spoof that here in a game dev forum?
you'd be surprised ๐ฆ
do want those type of trolls here?
sorry but fuck em ban them
after a warning
we are talking about 10-15 people that regularly stream
Generally, having a list of streamers seems like a nice suggestion, apart from tech challenges of implementing that.
top stream I have seen is 60 veiwers and who knows how many view bots are watching it, most people cant find game dev streams because of how twitch screwed with everything if I stream to Unreal channel nobody sees me unless the already know what they are looking for, if I do sciene and tech I get a chance someone randomly finds me, and the only reason I stream is to help new devs get started usiing a game engine, I dont take money or donattions just trying to give back to the community and the few other streamers I have watched seem to be doing the same thing but get new viewers.
when I am doing contract work I cant stream so even for me it would be nice to watch other people working on things in Unreal when I can stream
or cant
Honestly I am not a good streamer if I am working I dont even watch the chat, have no camera, and only use the mic when I get enough people asking me questions.
I will leave the stream running right now just incase someone wants to look at my user info and see if a bot could detect it, maybe we have to label our stream Unreal Slackers with a user ID assigned to us by the Admins and the bot will sort for those?
UnrealSlackers:UE4:ID007
something like that
if people are abusing it they get waned them booted
if I saw an exe stream or victor I would watch I ahve been learning from them via forum posts for years
also matheyw another man that helped me via youtube for years now
anwyay that is the idea and my thoughts about it like with everything I assume you guys are smarter about all this stuff I never used a discord bot so let me know if I am smoking crazy crack
there's probably a way of doing it, but it'll be hard to police people exploiting it (and someone actually has to implement it which is the other thing)
Imo worries that people will stream non-gamedev stuff is irrelevant
Bots can totally pick up streaming status changes
If its a opt-in system then that'll solve most irrelevant streams
And if someone mainly streams game dev but one day they stream KSP punishing them would be dumb
The greater issue is that this server doesn't exist for the promotion of anything really
So why should it promote twitch streams
The other ue4 discord that sprung up is probably a better place for that since they already have opt in roles
I have no idea about other discords I only have this one and feel it is the "offical Unreal 4" discord for development, I assume people came here to develop games and learn or get help live help from folks that are streaming should be promoted to help people learn.
Live help from people in here sure but nothing related to streaming
I am an old man been making games for 30 years I figured people would want my help. ๐
Anyone streaming also usually has their own discord
I do have my own discord
but that is for regulars
if someone is just getting started wants a bit of help I will stop working and help them
that is th entire reason I am streaming
While noble this server doesn't really exist to funnel people your/anyones way
People are already uppity about name sorting
Imo it is completely dumb to worry about people using ! To put their name on top of the online list
It affects no one
But if people are concerned about moving their name to the top of a useless list, adding a useful list would be worse
its hard to find game dev streamers on twitch now with all the changes so anything that gets people noticed that are willing to help people seems like a way to give the person doing a little credit for doing that task even if it is temp and only while they are doing it, and gets more people to watch game dev in general.
Yeah I completely agree
I think any community with people trying to be community leaders in their own way has the social responsibility to promote them
But you ain't going to find that here
Not without some fundamental shifts
I see a lot of unreal streamers with 0 viewers when they are the only ones streaming unreal at that time, its is discourging for the streamer to do that, I also so a girl and her bf using the stream to help collect donations for no progress on the project they were working on because she was cute her bf stayed in the background but she would still help people when asked so even in that case I was like ok well she is doing part of the job and earn to get more viewers then 30.
What is abad about here I see people helping peopel all the time
I only have 2 discord server this one and mine, so I dont know too much
I only come here to ask questions or help people
like I said I am old spent my entire adult life promoting game development so its sort of the only thing I know
I kind of think the #share-your-stream channel also has the added benefit of being a catalogue of past streams. I think its sufficient at promoting streamers. People that dont want to ssee strreams can set the channel to mutee. Those that do will see a new message and check it out. If they miss a stream because they were logged off being on the ttop of the user listt isnt going to solve tthat.
The only people in that channel are the people posting their own streams lol
@drowsy oxide When I click a lot of the links it is after they already stopped and had I known they were live I would have watched I have done that about 15 times over the past few years.
Yeah but thatss a slight inconvenience to youu. If we were to attempt to have to curate every person that wants to stream and be part of tthe list it would be a big job. We dont have any metrics on how many and how often people in the server streeam. So trying to sort them could be a massive issue.
Using the userlist as a means to highlightt peeople of than for Moderators seems like a useless endeavor to me due to thhe sheer size of the server.
Why do you even need to curate if its opt in
We just simply trust oopt in users to abide?
it is very clear if people are streaming unreal look at my status
I assumed a bot could see that and move me into a temp role until I shut it off
If you want to ensure that no one ever streams anything but unreal
I have seen this type of bot before
That is why I also agree its useless to do it here
if I accidently played league and didnt change my stream title then I should get a warning that I am abusing it
I don't even think you should get a warning
Yes but that requires us to constantly check streams.
If 90% of your shit is ue4 then who cares you are playing lol
the bot should be smart enough to move me out of the list
...
I agree allar
how many are abusing the streaming channel?
how much work has it caused to clean that up?
I dont want mods to have more work then setting up the bot and tuning it
if it is more then that then it is a bad idea
Anything bot related is an automatic no-go
they have 3 bots in the channel alreaddy they have a catagory
Creating thhe bot is another issue. We have so many bot things we want to do butt none of us have the time.
I already have a bot that moves streaming people to a role and blah, and I'm sure there are already off the shelf solutions, theres also the UE4 Live bot which I'm sure could be repurposed
but aye
Mods cant add bots. Nick has to.
another reason anything bot related is an automatic no-go here
And Nick iis AWOL at the moment agaain.
Maybe I should talk to Epic about creating a discord community server have they tried that before?
You should totally do that.
I thought because I see that Epic Staff list that Epic people were in charge in some way
No we arent supported in any official capacity
well that makes no sense to me
I can say that we are working to change that though but i wont say anything else.
Yes tthings move slow here but we are trying to improve that.
I find that annoying they should have fixed that a long time ago
Epic has not interest in such a Server
well if the server owner is AFK then you are going to be screwed if the pedal is hit
They have a private one and that's it :P
Also this server exists for a while and we are aware of the situation :P
you talked to the community people and they gave you the middle finger?
they seem so nice on the rpic stream
๐
The community people have no saying in that
who has say?
Uff, just trust me that Epic Games won't make any official Discord stuff
I only know a few people at Epic 2 devs from Medal of Honor and Tim and Mark
Go right to the top
Last time I did that Tim stopped following me on twitter
Ill talk to Tim next time i see him
Anyway, we are unofficial and if at all grant supported.
I created a wave on accident
But even that is a thing you have to apply for
I asked a question that was dumb to ask
I literally post random stuff and he still follows me
Must have been one hell of a dumb question
yeah but I caused him trouble
I posted it too Epic and he had people coming to him asking questions
no one follows me
good night
๐
What do you mean? The server is public, anyone can join and look at the chat history?
No, the channels are not logged. You can use the Search at the top right.
The only logging we perform is Deleted and Modified messaged via our internal bot/webinterface. @hushed jacinth
Alright thank you.
You can also export a channel to an html page
Can you all disable the "posted by functionality" on #looking-for-talent #looking-for-work until it actually works?
Or just simply put it outside the embed (which seems to be the easiest and fastest solution that hasn't been done yet) for now?
Yeah I'll revert it this week.
I'm starting to think the reason why AnswerHub and forum are dead is this server
pity
a heap of literally same questions in every channel
with poor searching
for the unrealbot, sometimes when someone posts a job in #looking-for-talent , it shows a bunch of numbers instead of their name. It is impossible to dm them. Can you please fix that?
Answerhub is dead for the very same reason that it's literally the same questions every day
@gritty lotus those from people with really lazy behaviour, I search it almost every day and it was possible. For the recent features I probably look here and this is ridicilous ๐
if only one in 50 questions isn't a waste of time, nobody is going to dig through them to actually answer the sensible questions :/
I thought AnswerHub was dead because Epic killed their bug pipeline
No point posting on AnswerHub if you have to raise a ticket in the tracker separately, and there can be no discussions on bugs because the tracker is useless
Though posting about bugs was only one of its purposes I guess
I'm not sure it made a difference which void you decided to scream into
at least before other people could chip in though
Yeah. I remember in the early days when Epic staff responded to most questions
Haven't posted anything there recently so I can't be sure, but I'd imagine that's a rare occurrence these days
These people always exist
And sometimes it's even us
We had this back in Source Mapping Forums, where peeps weren't reading the pinned threads with tutorial, and posted the same thing over and over again.
Like here they scream about AccessedNone and Casting, in Source they screamed about Leaks when the Map wasn't 100% shut off of the void around it.
Either you help them and afterwards guide them to use google a bit more, or you choose to ignore them. I won't blame you
Same goes for AnswerHUB and UE4 Forums
haven't even opened the forum or answers site much in like a year other than for the changelog threads
I tend to post the link to the answer on all unanswered questions of the same from the first two search pages, this is a good way to keep AH clean.
as for the bug pipeline... I didn't have an answer for 90% of my questions even back in the days, cause they are kinda weird and hard, for me AH was always dead lol but I'm against the community spreading. Everyone should be at the same place to have the reliable resource to search in
for example I'm working with online beacons and i have opened two AH tabs, two forum tabs, one wiki and discord multiplayer channel, this is kinda ridicilous
Make the server name Unreal Engine
it's not an official server
<@&213101288538374145> Hm, not sure if it really warrants it...but could be useful to let everyone know that Epic staff is on vacation until (I think) July 8th in #unreal-news or something
probably not warrented
So people stop (maybe stop) pinging them randomly
that will never stop
it's why a number of Epic employees aren't tagged
yes, it's June 22nd to July 8th
you can just disable pinging the role
They get pinged personally
Or rename the role?
And that won't stop even if we announce that
we have, that doesn't stop personal pings
it's all good. thanks for your feedback!
Well as far as I'm aware, they aren't here officially anyway
๐
Hey is it possible to get an Art chat section for the discord? design chat always seems to get filled with art talk
kinda, but "Graphics" covers too much already
Would you peeps says the overall "Art" related talk is too much in the channels it happens in?
I'm not really in the art related channels, so I can't judge that
As for all "new" channel ideas, we would need to have enough traffic in it.
In addition what exactly should the "art" channel cover, as this is a very broad term?
What I've noticed is #graphics becomes a catch-all for both UE4 related graphics questions and any art content creation questions in general even outside of that. It can cover lightmapping issues, external baking, texturing questions, art workflow questions, material creation, HLSL code, lighting questions, photogrammetry, lighting performance, and more.
It's nice that the channel is so active but when it gets busy at times some questions just get unanswered and buried because the chat scrolls by too fast when people are already helping two others.
And if anyone comes with anything super specific like a blender question, the best thing we can really do is just direct them to another discord since the odds of a person that can answer it that also happens to use that program and sees it before it scrolls past is pretty low.
@deft raft While an overall Art talk channel may be too specific, I would push for an Environment Art/General Art (for characters, materials etc) in Content Creation section.
I have to agree here with people, most gamedev groups (for specific engines) I'm in have separate channel for art assets and then another for shaders and sometimes yet another for rendering
but I feel that just simply split in graphics-technical and graphics-art could do
when you get another channel for modeling and texturing etc, it does reduce the noise from more technical shader/rendering stuff
#ask-deathrey channel
^
I've turned it into a tech art coven ๐ฆ
that's what it ultimately should be about IMO
as it is ue server after all
but it doesn't stop people from talking about other things
It's always hard to stop a topic from going more into the "outside" UE4 topic.
I can talk about #multiplayer and instantly go into Databases, ThirdParty systems like Steam, PlayFab, GameSparks etc.
And this should totally be allowed in my eyes. So showing off Art or asking about it (as long as the intention is to use it in/with UE4) is totally nice and welcome by me.
Now if #graphics works but is too busy and you peeps can come up with a difference between this and a new channel that is totally clear, just by the name (we all know noone reads the freaking description) then please, share your feedback with us.
Issues with job bot ? All tags come up as invalid user
Noticed this was mentioned. Mb.
Yeah we are aware of that. It's a problem in how every Discord Client (your program) caches the users.
@chilly ivy Wanted to update it this week.
I'm updating the bot with a fix momentarily.
First I'm going to try the idea we discussed previously: putting the mention outside of the embed. I'm pretty sure this won't fix it, but I just want to rule it out completely before abandoning it.
I'm not able to replicate the issue at all on my test server, so this will help to rule out potential causes.
If that fails, I'll simply remove mentions for now until we come up with a better solution.
Don't know if this is the right place to ask but what perks would I get if I boosted the server? Like with the Nitro Booster role I mean
@sweet nova Yes, they earned a second infraction.
Just an idea, canโt be the first to suggest it, but maybe wip should be split into a feedback channel, and a showcase channel, since I think thereโs some things actually looking for constructive criticism, and others just proud of what their doing. Not sure if itโs necessary, just a thought
I dont think its gets enough traffic to warrant separating it like that.
Maybe people just need to, in that case, say whether they're looking for critics or just showing off what they're working on.
The channel is described as "Share your works in progress and get feedback/critique from others in the community.".
So if you post there, you can expect feedback and critiques, even if you don't ask for it.
So I would suggest adding a "Just want to show my progress, don't need feedback." to a message if no feedback is required.
I suspect a problem with that channel is that there are a lot more people posting in it to show off what they're working on than there are people interesting in critiquing it
But that's human nature
Everyone is most interested in their own project
Yeah but that's fine.
Can the admins implement a weekly reminder to encourage Unreal Slackers users to review released games on the planforms they are released on to help our developers get better exposure on the platforms they released their games on? I would suggest a paid game channel and a free game channel that way we can separate the two. A simple at everyone every week with the same message would go a long way. Right know everyone is for themselves and if you look at the release section it is almost pointless because it is so inactive. Some times we all need a push to help each other and I am just trying to think of better ways to encourage this community to help support these released games.
you can't really ping 20,000 people every week on a whim like that
one time per week same day and time would not hurt
it'll piss a lot of people off
so pinning it a section no one reads is an option?
some times you need to do things for the greater good of the community. Maybe start a poll or something to see if people would consider it.
What if you have a role people can opt in to to subscribe to that ping?
That would be cool
opt-in would be fine
I suspect you'll find that nothing much will change though - people are just plain disinterested in certain sections
some times you need to lead not just mod
I'm a forum moderator
sorry "you" was just a general term as in those that are in control. I gave my advice and I am done. Thanks for letting me share my concerns.
Thank you for the feedback Matt
Once it's released we will monitor #multiplayer and see if it's enough traffic to move it into a second channel.
However until Epic fully releases it, you may just use #multiplayer to talk about what will be.
Maybe it's still too early but a #python channel might be something worth considering.
aaa, nice. Didn't see that
there should be a ue4 made games recommendation channel
#madewithUE4 channel
theres the released channel, but im not going to go on there and recommend other people's work
#released is used to show YOUR released game. So I understand the point.
They want to advertise games done with UE4 by others too.
It is pretty rare to see released games.
Not even a single AAA or medium size games advertise on #released channel either.
Let's get you all 50 boosts, give visibility to Boosters like other servers do ๐
@vocal blade
The discord is named Unreal Slackers for a reason

I relesead my game, it has 5 hours gameplay ๐
I made 308 dollars this past three months โค
Unreal Slackers will never advertise it tho
First time I advertised it on released channel, I got flooded by plugins releases and material releases on the unreal market
I'm not complaining, but just don't count on this server to advertise.
It is a nice place to learn, really.
We arent an advertising platform.....
We help support this discord but we get no support for our released games. I see how it is.
Add market release channel to my list of recommended changes to the released channel request listed above. We need these channels separated for better "advertising" purposes.
So you expect to answer basic questions already covered by100 youtube videos and direct people to usage of nodes that the nodes themselves advise in tooltips.... and then have the entire server downloading your game to participate in microtransactions to make you a millionaire already!?
Wow. Do everybody a favor and stop wasting time.
I will thanks.
I'm not saying this server should broadcast every release all day every day
But I do understand the feeling of a lack of promoting community doings within this community
Maybe feature a released project every x often?
wouldnt that just be ruled by favourtism though, how would it be possible to fairly choose?
personally I feel as though Epic do a pretty great job of promoting the community to the point its not really needed here
Thing is, this is a community of peers, not an audience to be advertised to.
Engagement in any form of advertising in here is going to be very low
Not sure we need any more advertising here.We made it clear in the past that this Discord is for you to get help with your UE4 project, not to find gamers.
If you need gamers then you should bring this stuff to your own discord, facebook, twitter, website, etc.
I already left all the UE4 Facebook groups for this reason (though Slackers has channels to filter this out)
The whole idea of the #released channel is to show what you have created and to maybe gain some applause for it.
Not to make us play your game.
So why I had a ping of everyone for a horror sci-fi game these days?
I never had a ping on this server, not of "everyone" at least, It was the first time I saw, I was surprised it was an advertise for a game.
It is disabled
Hey guys, I think it would be nice to have a dedicated channel to Visual Studio itself. I think most people use Visual Studio together with UE4, VS is very complex and is worth discussing
There is no dedicated to Visual Studio discord server
#cpp would probably be just fine? I doubt many people are using Visual Studio with Unreal and not for C++ code
C#
But, for example, right now I have a general question about Visual Studio
Not tied to any language
More specifically, git console support in Visual Studio. And not UE4-related. But this server would be good for this kind of questions because it's so popular with tens(?) of thousands people on the server.
There's #source-control, I guess I'll do it in that channel for now
not many people use C# with Unreal though
I went searching and the ping was actually a jpg the guy attached to his advertise ๐ ๐ค LOL
although this, you guys could hear your community and make a different approach for our released games.
We're not asking to advertise it for us, but to make a better way of finding people who actually finished a game. Some people here (new users and such) would love to see some SOLID content, more than scattered plugins/materials/assets. Thanks!
err, blue username? That's not this discord?
There's not even a Shaun around here. Yah, that's a diff server!
what's that's very obviously this discord
the avatar, user name and message is an image tho lol
lol
because only that part of discord is in another language
What part?
That discord is in English but right above the chat box or whatever itโs in a diff language
browser / Discord isn't in English
Actually it's not in English. Only the channel and user names are, which makes sense because those wouldn't be localized.
nothing to do with server
Anyways, I think we can all stop scrutinizing the screenshot and move on. ๐
Even if there was a #advertising channel
All you would be doing is showing your game to other devs
which in itself, is a dumb move
just git gud at fostering a community of your own, twitter, discord, w.e.
Yeah, let the release channel be a lego builder more than a game engine
My main objective would be showing the game for other devs, not for selling (advertising itself) more like sharing with the brotherhood... I see all you guys and cant distinct who made what game, or even, If you finished an actual game, which in that case, your argument would be empty.
My point is solely for the benefit of the server.
I'm saying this because the released channel always disappointed me. Lots of plugins that most of people won't be using.
And the way that it is, this server is ALREADY advertising, but for plugins/materials/particles...
This is overwhelmingly more of a Dev server than anything else though.
Advertising Plugins or other Marketplace assets that help development makes sense.
Buying random Indie games not so much for most developers.
If anything, I wish slowmode was enabled in #work-in-progress #released
Although there have been plenty of folks advertising their game releases or Kickstarters but who knows how much traffic/sales they actually have gotten from here.
Someone mentioned about building up a community and doing proper marketing, and honestly that's the way to go.
Lots of newbies dm me for help because they see what I'm creating, and thats my point, I would love to see what you or other dev have released last year for example, as an incentive and reminder, that motivates through the hard working years of effort someone pulled through to accomplish the task of releasing a full game.
The only game I worked on that I'd share right now is dead. Kinda defeats your goal there - "Stick with it and you too can help bring a flop to life"
Slow Mode for the channels is actually a good idea. I totally forgot about slow mode, I'll ask the others @rich sky
Although isn't that per user?
If someone doesn't post more than once in x time it won't affect them anyway or?
However looking at the two channels I think they are working quite well.
What exactlycounts as #released (e.g. Kickstarter) is a bit annoying to define, but I can live with some not 100% released posts in there
Just not "I released my version 0.0.0.0.0.1 Early 5 minute build for you to play while I work on it!"
@deft raft Aye, it's per user. And that's exactly why I'd want it. A lot of times things get off topic rather quickly in there and people's things get lost (one of the issues presented here by others recently), other times people are spamming PAGES worth of pictures/videos for like 2-3 minutes. Again, you're bound to get spammed out and your stuff hidden by these folks.
Getting Feedback is important (especially in #work-in-progress ), but I think once slowmode is activated, it should alleviate some issues in there where people are just talking back and forth (and/or over each other). Or of course, there's the possibility where, there's just a #WIP-Feedback channel, where it's actually feedback that people want and longer discussions can go there. Otherwise #work-in-progress , is just people giving updates to random things. But I know you all hate adding new channels.
slow mode seems reasonable, so long as people are aware of it
it shows up like this
Considering nobody reads the rules, the description, or even the channel name some of the time, there will be people that don't notice that either. But it's still a good idea anyway.
I suggest considering either explicitly stating in the rules, that promotion of other resources via discord tag is not allowed or simply enforcing it according to present rules.
Pretty sure that rule 6 would apply. Certain individuals tend to promote their websites by flooding chats with URL in their tag.
we need filmmaker channel! vote for this and me as an admin!
I think there should be some rules regarding the accusations surrounding scammers, I dont think its right anyone can be called a scammer without any evidence what so ever. Sure there could be some official channels but I dont think its right that libel is allowed in industry channels, simply removing it for being offtopic doesnt protect ones reputation
How would you suggest we word such a rule?
How do we avoid it appearing that this rule is purely to protect scammers?
Im not sure, all I know is Im not entirely happy with the outcome receiving the same punishment for protecting my good name which Im pretty sure Im legally allowed to do when faced with libel.
Id say if a user has a problem with another user it should be brought up with moderators not spoken about openly in a public channel.
Then why didnt you bring it up to a Moderator?
This has always been our recommendation.
As soon as you feel you are not being treated properly, let us know.
I was going to but you didnt give me a chance, I received the infraction within a minute of replying
I thought Id try to solve it civilly first I dont think my words were offtopic considering my career was under threat
I do think there could be something to protect people from such accusations, in most countries libel is illegal.
I do agree with you that it would perhaps be of benefit to have a rule against such things. The wording however will be tricky.
yup I'll leave it with you guys, I certainly dont want to protect scammers and nothing in all my comments on this server would suggest otherwise.
No doubt
@drowsy oxide : "Do not slander* other users."
- oral defamation, in which someone tells one or more persons an untruth about another which untruth will harm the reputation of the person defamed. Slander is a civil wrong (tort) and can be the basis for a lawsuit.
Onus is then on the one claiming to have been scammed to provide evidence (which aught to be very easy), else considered slander.
There needs to be a rule against shaming and discouraging victims who were scammed as well. I never 'set myself up' to be scammed by those 4 individuals I reported. I NEVER asked to be scammed to begin with. I have tried for roughly a decade to protect myself from scams and those who seek to ruin me, and I am not just going to let someone try to penalize me from speaking out on the experiences and discourage me from doing so by making extremely bogus claims that I come off as "alarming" for defending myself. I have EVERY SINGLE RIGHT to defend myself, alright? And all-while pretending to sympathize with my situation? It's frankly very disrespectful and insulting; A mockery.
And I am honestly sick and tired of this old "learn and move on" defeatist excuse. When did that ever help matters?!? As I said in lounge, many I knew in a similar situation have already done that, how many of them still remain in this industry? Only 4/26 of them are still hanging on. I don't believe in "shut up, suck it up, suffer in silence, feel like a failure, and just quit the hobby, while the evil laugh their way to prosper on yet another's misery". No, I am done doing that!
If this is the what the gaming industry wants, then I might as well start looking for a new medium to work in.
Lastly, there is a difference between 'calling someone a scammer" and stating they are pro-scammer, as in defending scammers. You don't have to be a scammer to look the other way and condone scamming. Just like one does not have to be a Ubisoft fan to defend and support Ubisoft and their actions. I was never a fan of Take Two Interactive but I use to support them to an extent until a few years ago.
Besides, I've already apologized for my side of the ordeal in #lounge, so I'd like for this charade to just end.
Uh, I don't think it's about not calling out scammers, it's about having to provide proof if you decide to do so. It isn't about shaming you away from your hobby, it's about 6040 members didn't come online to read someone complain.
Accusations are double edged swords. They can protect people and ruin lives. It makes sense to have it done properly, I don't think you should take it personally.
Exactly. If you have 100% proof that someone is a scammer, then you are free to report them whereever you want.
Even though I would say it's better to do so in private with a moderator than in public.
You are also free to get them into that forum thread if you think that's a good idea.
However if you have no proof that someone is a scammer then I simply don't want to read about it.
Because it can very much be the other way round, trying to ruin someones career by calling them a scammer. I've already seen that happening in the past.
That has nothing to do with "pro-scammer" or not.
We are receiving a handful of reports in private, but most users have no actual proof. They had no contract, they have no proper message history, nothing.
So a "Please prepare yourself better next time." is kinda all we can do.
I'm more than happy to explain how you should handle contract work to not get scammed if someone is interested.
Or at least make it a lot more unlikely
I'm in agreement with Cedric on this.
Honestly, and I wasn't going to add insult to injury originally (thought about commenting since it happened), but plenty of people see this kind of stuff, and plenty of people won't want to work with either of you after this. Why bother taking a chance? It's he said/she said. So in the future, does that mean if we get into some disagreement about xyz, am I going to feel the "wraith". It'd be one thing if there were undeniable proof, and it was presented in a way where there's no question about it. But it's another without it at all. Then on the flip side, now someone was called a scammer/pro-scammer, whatever. Risky working with that person.
Now both of you lose
No one wins
But, at least you got to say your piece ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
Yeah it's def not the best idea to post this stuff without having proof :P
basically; slander. :>
The more people you know
The bigger your blacklist
I'm not a fan of public blacklists but
Except my report is NOT a "he said/she said/they said." I did provide evidence of their actions against me. If you lot actually read the report from start to finish, you'd noticed the hyperlinks and find them linked to my DeviantArt st.ash. Sorry if its not grade-A-spot-on, but I did my damndest to back up my report. If I had nothing or very little to support my stances, I would not even bother typing a report on those 4 in the first place since it would surely go nowhere. It's not like I just went on the thread posting this blindly. I took strong consideration and precautions before doing so, and I personally spoke with the thread's owner Mike Philips to help me carefully prepare my report, handing him drafts of my reports before posting them on the thread. I wanted to see his approval or critique on whether it is even worthy of public attention.
I wanted to ensure this would be a good course of action and not jump the gun and make a big mistake. I was trying to tread carefully. Those two scammers have been terrorizing me for 2 years now and I had to lay low and delete my social media in fear of them stalking and libeling me, jeopardizing my business and all my hard work. It was not even easy to write such reports (the first two at least).
@strong tide It's libel, not slander.
Is the word you are looking for, its all written text, no personal vocal speech involved.
And the point is moot because I am not trying to libel anyone. I am defending myself from libelers/scammers and those who seek to encourage, defend, condone, or neglect their actions.
@rich sky As far as working with others, well honestly, I do not want to work with anyone anymore, especially not with my own projects. 2D Top Down Shooter template was created and maintained proudly by one person - 'yours truly' and I intend to maintain this practice for all my future projects from now on. I strongly distrust anyone else touching Maze Qore for VERY good reason, especially after what has happened over 2 years ago, and its not the first project that had team-related disasters, but it is the very worst fate yet in my history of failed projects. I am tired of seeing another bright idea fail to materialize because of ridiculous disasters related to team-related set-backs and betrayals. I am very tired of being backstabbed and backshot, and serving as a scapegoat for someone else's actions. So my best and only working solution is work solo and its been giving me much more peace and focus ever since. It has its pros and cons and I long prepared myself with trial and error so I've by now become trained to handle this path.
As far as freelance, I am considering to leave the freelance scene entirely by next year now that I got a job working through a warehouse - my secondary career I use to pay my apartment expenses and survive; it has now become my mandatory job. I still might offer services of freelance to a little more than a few until the end of September, and then a very select few I trust for work for the remainder of 2019. By 2020, my sole income source outside of warehouse will strictly come from my marketplace products and my game sales, and work from any other entertainment medium I may make (ie. Qore Comics) from hence on.
Finally, a little off-topic: I want to add that I have not been very happy of what has come of the gaming industry as of late either. I do not wish to go into too many details about it but I already seen the warnings written in stone for over a decade and now its finally come close to reality. It's no longer a matter of if the governments of the world will regulate and change the gaming industry to control the madness that has spread within, its now a matter of when. More reason why I have recently been abandoning ship on the freelance and careers path with game dev jobs and sticking to my warehouse career. I will still do what I love and make my products. Maze Qore and other titles will still be developed and eventually released, I just will focus on my own business instead of working for other gaming companies by 2020 onward. If a second crash or a controversial change happens, then at least I have a failsafe to turn to instead of winding up on the streets again.
Better safe than sorry.
I care not for government politics.
"I'm not a fan of public blacklists but"
Should probably point out that industry blacklists are illegal in many countries, and that this Discord has a member base larger than most national game development communities
We wont implement any form of a blacklist. The question here is if and how to word a No name and shame rule.
Simply to help avoid false or damaging unfounded accusations.
@gritty lotus is why you never write shit down
we should have a dedicated channel for posting tutorials, if someone comes across either a good tutorial for beginners or a tutorial on some niche topic about game design they can share it
We already discussed this in the past: Discord is not a good system for storing links and resources. If you want to do this you should create a Blog or Wiki and pot the stuff there.
@open radish What you could consider is creating a forum post and start a list of tutorials by subject... then, people can simply add to it.
Scotch tape
I got a VERY important feedback to provide: Can we PLEASE ban the discussion of government politics?!?
I am getting EXTREMELY sick and tired of hearing about this pro/anti Trump garbage and bigots making extremely stupid claims that usually relate to "Any state who voted Trump does not deserve to be in the next GTA!" or "You are an idiot for wasting your voting on non-partisan!". I had enough of dealing with the bullying from the Totem Arts team and their toxic views, I do NOT need it here in Slackers. It discourages game development.
I am here to make video games, make bank, survive, and most importantly heal from my past and enjoy my hobby, not relive my terrible high school experience to the point where I start smashing glass bottles in my home or brawling on the streets. God f*cking damnit!
Or is there a rule for that already that I know not of?
Eh, part of the reason the world is in such a mess right now is because so many people want to just completely ignore politics and pretend everything is okay
No, no, NO! We are NOT going there! I care not for this stupid government political debates! Keep them outside the server. There are other servers that support them.
Not here please.
Honestly, if you don't want to engage in politic talk, don't engage?
Same for any other conversation
Only thing I see about politics is 99% in #lounge where it should be
I don't always engage, but sometimes people will just mention Trump on my responses, like even in here.
"SmurfiesLast Tuesday at 1:49 AM
Trump supports these Text Walls."
Aye, that 1%

A day before your Political Conversation in #lounge
ยฏ_(ใ)_/ยฏ
bit much over a joke post dont you think mate
I almost never engage, because it usually ends up with stupid responses like this.

It is often just hostile. Vote for my favorite candidate our your some idiot who deserves to be subjugated!
Sometimes I am glad for having my mace and sidearm in my home.
The whole thing sounds kind of like someone who is embarrassed about their opinions and doesn't want other people to bring them up
At least if I have to deal with this mindset in person, and I often do.
Apparently according to his kind, I have no right to be a non-partisan and vote third-party or rather independent.
Dunno, honestly, 95% of people who engage in anything Trump related probably never voted (or weren't of voting age, or US Citizen)
And now you're saying that you think it's okay to murder people who disagree with your opinions
So, what's the point of engaging
@wraith glade No I never said that! Do not twist my words out of context!
Bunch of bandwagoners
I said I had my self-defense tools in case they do something stupid. There are many cases of political zealots getting violent against those who disagreed with their candidate of choice, since the 2016 election and prior.
Void knows how bad it may be in this 2020 election.
I am just getting myself prepared for it.
I no longer have the tolerance for them.
Is Void the name of some Dark God ?
the amount of political discussion in lounge isn't exactly massive, but also that's where it belongs?
need a chill pill or 3
and it's not like it ever degenerates into flame wars or whatever
@rich sky No, I am just trying to reduce the use of 'God'. An alternative way for former-Christian atheists to escape their religious past and clear anymore traces from it.
I was raised Christian, but I defected a long time ago. I am an agnostic atheist.
Old habits die hard so they say.
@gritty lotus Well sometimes they do.
And its very ugly when they do.
I hated the hell out of GDL but at least they do their damndest to keep any political discussion out of the server.
if you have an example of a flame war breaking out over politics in lounge in the past few months, you're welcome to share it
I will let you know if and when I find one.
GDL isn't doing as great of a job as you may think
Vs Unreal Slackers
Unreal Slackers is doing a much better job than GDL with just the keyword of Trump
Damn... They degraded even further... Guess I shant be too surprised.
Whelp, stand corrected. Hell, that is even more reason I'd leave that cancerous server and its toxic community.
I had my high hopes for Unreal Slackers instead as I've been part of this community ever since it started on their namesake platform Slack.
If anyone remember.
Hell, even MonsOlympus and Ambershee where the main familiar ones I met on the Slack, and before that, I first met them on the UDK Forums. The latter and I are still very cool with each other, but the former used to be a lot better than I know him now... I know not entirely what happened between us to be honest, but apparently bridge has been burned even before that debate storm happened.
Time has changed so much I know not if for better or worse anymore...
Sometimes I wish I could just return to the UDK era where things were simpler and many opportunity to expand my career and get into the industry faster.
UE4 era, its apparently more difficult now, less I get savvy with C++ tech or make something unique in the marketplace.
Anyways, with Slackers I had thought was a lot more healthy to associate with than other alternatives. Though I have notice a decline on that here, at least it is still better than GDL on many levels.
My grammar is failing me...
I feel like I am getting old sometimes...
It would be cool to head to a server that was completely devoid of all things political...where people could just talk about the topic at hand... game dev.
I still haven't seen much by way of political discussion outside of #lounge
And maybe some occasionally in #ue4-general I suppose, since that tends to be semi-offtopic
Bound to happen since it's the landing page and "general" in nature.
Can we please NOT ban discussion of government and politics? There have been more or less civil talks going on for years in lounge and depraving people of that possibility just because someone can't use block function as intended seems unreasonable.
I see no reason to ban it. Read the description of #lounge.
If you dont like it. Mute it.
#lounge gives people an area to vent about non gamedev related topics which i think is part of keeping a healthy atmosphere here. Obviously within reason and within the #old-rules
I'll bring a gasmask if the atmosphere is none healthy next time ๐
@drowsy oxide .. the description/name of the channels could use some help..
none of them appears to be a chat where you can ask beginner's question in general
look at Blender discord (another high traffic discord) .. which does have specialized help sections.. but also has .. a 'general-help' section
The channels arent classified based on experience, regardless of how experienced you are, choose the channel thats most appropriate for your question.
the name is huge thing..
none of them appears to be beginner friendly.. aka lost soul friendly
name wise
What?
why not have a section that says "beginner's help' or 'ask a question' or 'general-help'
for someone who is knew to the server..
it (the current name scheme) looks very confusing ..
make one of them more 'inviting' for beginners..
that is my suggestion
I don't usually strongly vouch for such things.. but this one is high on my list
similar to what the 'lounge' is..
people just know.. it is basically 'general chat.. everything works in it' type of thing
So why cant newbies ask in #lounge?
Or the generally named #ue4-general
Which is what they are for anyway.
At least #ue4-general
Is for asking questions for which you dont know where else to ask.
its all in the name
imagine .. naming the 'toilet' as 'Water-closet' .. and the confusion it will cause for those .. for whom english is not a first language
lounge is.. as you know.. the backalley of this server..
you said it yourself.. there is lot of stuff.. polluting stuff in it
#ue4-general appears to be a chat for discussing the unreal-engine as a software in general
I think you will gain and loose nothing.. if you just change the name of #ue4-general to something that signifies that it is a place for asking newbie questions .. or questions in general
That would need to be a new channel, if you renamed #ue4-general to something like that you completely destroy its purpose.
and is that purpose different .. to what the name change would signify?
with all due respect.. your last statement is contradicting your previous statement about its purpose
The purpose of #ue4-general is to provide a channel that allows users to pose questions they dont know where else to put and to also allow for general discussion about the engine.
Calling it "Beginners Help" completely shifts its purpose.
reasonable argument
this was my original point as well
well make it if you have to..
but as someone relatively new to this server .. I strongly feel that none of the names .. quiet clearly signifies a 'general' place to ask beginner's question
this is that type of thing.. as in offices.. where a manager has glass walls.. to make his office more inviting to his employees
There is no beginners place to ask questions, if you have a question, choose a channel that it is related to... I dont understand why thats not easy enough?
Have you read the #more-resources channel? It clearly outlines the purpose of each channel.
so your basically saying that there is no need for a place for 'beginner's questions' .. ?
Yes, because as i said before, the channels arent classified based on experience.
If your unsure, use a general channel IE #ue4-general and users will guide you appropriately.
well I have explained enough.. but here is one last way of seeing it..
suppose I'm a newbie.. running UE4 for the first time.. and I get stuck .. I hear about UE Slackers discord somewhere (which usually takes time as well), and even though I don't use discord.. I install the app and join the server
next I have to figure out.. that there is no general help section (based on names) .. and #ue4-general might be a chat for discussing the software.. and not newbie questions .. then I find the guide .. which is similar to rules sections..
and I spend another 10-20 minutes.. figuring out where to actually post my question
and time passes away quickly.. in practical life.. that is a fact
and most of the time.. people say.. forget it.. I'm gonna find the answer elsewhere..
and they remain inactive in such chats.. or just quit.. if they like to keep things in clean order
no offense.. but I still feel.. that you are not seeing things from the perspective of a person who is new to the server..
Im not offended champ, i just want to make sure we break it down as best can be.
good to know that you are a reasonable person..
one more thing is that.. I know from my MMORPG days.. that people who know very little english can't google translate #ue4-general into 'general help' section.. cause if they can.. then I'm officially living under a rock
'jargon' is a type of noise in communication process .. thats business communication 101 (I'm a business grad btw)
Feel like all is made plenty clear by lurking and reading #old-rules and #more-resources like anyone on the internet should know to do
Yop and you can ask you beginner questions in the channel that fits your question. And that seems to work just fine.
Doesn't matter if #blueprint gets a beginner or expert question. As long as you made sure to google a bit first to check that your question hasn't been answered 5000 times by text and video, you are good to go.
To be perfectly honest; anyone with enough brain capacity to use UE4, who also spent the time to find this discord server, will also see when they open #ue4-general ; which is the first useable text chat (not including introductions) that other users are; asking for help with their project; discussing the engine in general; and some conversation that's drifted into lounge territory. If they can't distinguish that that would be a good place to start, then maybe game dev isn't for them.
Don't most people generally just put their questions in the first available place without thinking?
Unfortunately, yeah. xD
I never understood that mentality
Personally speaking that kinda mentality pisses me off; and i don't think they should be pandered too- not in software design, nor communicating with.
It, to me, essentially just screams "HELP ME! HELP ME! HELP ME! HELP ME! I cba looking into things properly! HELP ME! "
We dont see the need to have any specifically "beginner friendly" channels. As ive stated multiple times before, the channels are designed to remove experience from the equation. It takes just a little bit of forethought to choose an appropriate channel for any questions.
this is kinda topic that gets brought up on other discord groups as well
for some people it's hard to grasp that only the offtopic channel (#lounge in this case) is the only non-help channel
it's common to see people come and ask for help channels despite the server is actually filled with them
And they do so knowingly and intentionally, since they see it's active and are just putting it anywhere they see people have a pulse. It's not that they don't know it's a non-help channel, they just want to get eyeballs on it.
Most people that the subject gets brought up to when it does happen just say it plainly.
Per conversation with Jan Kaluza: I would like to request/propose a "design" channel for technical design questions/theory crafting. For more abstract design questions that don't fit neatly into the current #design-chat because they may touch on several areas of disciplines including programming (but not implementation), player experience, ambiance (maybe if it was seperate from the level design concepts...) , ie the more abstract and theoretical aspects of game design that don't currently seem to be accepted as "theory" in the #design-chat channel
I posted in here this morning, and my post seems to be gone?
Some off-topic spam got deleted earlier, maybe your message got caught in that?
Though that was much later than your reply about the design channel. Strange.
Yes that is the case, i accidentally got his message caught up in the purge
ambershee wrote:
I'm a technical designer by trade, and I don't really see the need for a separate channel; more technical tasks like system design comes under the remit of 'design'. The moment you start talking about the implementation though, it's time to wander into blueprint or cpp as appropriate.
as for the actual design channel, it's been clear for a while that the general audience in here clearly lacks the understanding of what it is, and sadly the channel just isn't working out (still). I'd like to see it removed as it's pointless and will never get better.
@gritty lotus
๐
btw, is it mentioned somewhere in #more-resources #old-rules that epic staff should not be mentioned?
No, we are discussing that now though.
It happens so barely that we haven't added that yet, but we will now.
๐
Couldn't you just turn off the option to allow people to mention that role?
You know, sometimes it comes handy to mention Epic staff member in course of conversation.
I thought the idea was that you shouldn't mention the role (e.g. all of them)
Not that you shouldn't mention specific ones
you can't mention the role
But you can mention that poor foolish guy whose name is "Epic"

@wraith glade They already can't mention the role
So the rule is that you shouldn't pester the individuals?
That's at least what happened today
No accounting for people
it's a shame that the one who was most useful to pester (nick darnell) seems to have disappeared
yeah I miss Nick
he's still here, but I can totally understand that he doesn't want to answer all the UMG and Slate stuff :D
Is it really that bad? , I mean in the UMG and Slate ?
@rich lintel There are a few things that aren't really documented.
Slate itself has ages old tutorials and maybe the template plugins you can create.
So most of that you have to learn by locking into the Source Code of the Editor, or maybe one of the Game examples.
So based on that, a lot of questions come up that, if Nick would be here, would be targeted at him.
And if you are here after work I can understand that you really don't want to deal with even more support questions :D
@deft raft yeah it makes sense.
This is more about discord than this server specifically, but this server is a discord partner, signified by the infinity symbol next to the name in the top left; Is there any point to nitro boosting it?
Not really
Of course, Discord Partner doesn't cover all the stuff the boosting gives us
There's little point to boosting any server
That's a different story though :D
@chilly ivy Can probably outline better what stuff comes with Discord Partner and what comes with Boosting.
Iirc some things overlap, others not
I think the only thing we really gain that we dont already have is the Banner.
Which we arent even using lol
did you forget the most important part???? you get to have a purple name in here !!
Hi, great work here! I'm missing a room for EOS SDK, I have some questions myself but no specific threads, any reason why?
EOS SDK?
you mean Epic Online Services?
currently it's tied to EGS, so chat can go in there if needs be
I don't think many people in here are actually using it
@fallen moon Here's a quick look at the perks we get. Stuff we get automatically as partners is crossed out, everything boosting gets us is highlighted.
We still haven't decided how much we're going to embrace boosting, so we haven't created any assets for the graphics-related perks yet (banner, animated icon, emoji).
So for now, you may want to boost another server to get the most out of it.
honestly, the only thing of any value is the URL
Higher Upload Size isn't too bad either though
Nitro users get that anyway
also probably don't need 50MB+ files uploaded to the server, heh
Nitro users get that anyway
I'm not a Nitro user and I don't know how many of the few thousand users here are. so it's useful for us :P
100MB. What am I going to do with such low file size?
Why not offer GB?
Least I can do more with that.
what GB size file do you need to share in chat lol
I can upload game jam submissions here with GB or prototypes.
letting every one of 20,000 people upload 1GB is madness
well you can upload way more than 1GB since the limit is per file not per user
File uploads are generally intended for images and videos, for which 100MB is more than enough for even the most demanding communities.
Or private videos I dont want on social media
I just use unlisted youtube videos
Nothing that gets on the internet is private unfortunately.
A lot of my recorded videos are in the GB, and the ones below it are far above 100MB.
Compress them into .mp4 and you'll have no problem meeting the 100MB limit.
must be long videos then
I have some game trailers and progress videos, as well as evidence videos on my hard drive.
And then there are mirrors of important or valuable videos that I suspect are under risk of being censored or already have.
Including controversial videos.
Stuff that do not violate rules or terms and service but just brings the ire of those who disagree politically or socially.
Then I got video game controversial relics, notably the 90's violence controversy and the Night Trap content
And Doom
None of those sound like files you should be uploading to a Discord server.
The last parts sure, but the first few I wanted to upload for critique instead of unlisted and people easily have link to spread it around and defeat the purpose of being unlisted in first place.
The game trailer or progress prototypes.
Those could both easily be uploaded to Discord, say, if you wanted to share your progress in #work-in-progress.
Under 100MB?
files limit is now 50 isnt it ?
50MB for Nitro users, 8MB for everyone else.
here says 50mb for all on this server
Alright. I see what I can do to compress my stuff more.
As long as we're boosted, yes, it's 50MB for everyone.
Without sacrificing quality.
as an FYI, nothing you upload to Discord is private
@open radish Check out Handbrake. https://handbrake.fr/
HandBrake is an open-source, GPL-licensed, multiplatform, multithreaded video transcoder.
Even PMs?
Heavens no
content in PMs are not private
PMs can share link so no
no files uploaded to Discord are private
DMs are private to the members of the DM.
Is there any place that is truly private on the net?
No
That's not a discussion for this channel.
content uploaded in a private message here is still accessible by other users
Not as far as I know.
Which channel is best discussion for this then?
ALL content uploaded to Discord is directly accessible via URL
granted, you would need the URL, but it can be scraped etc
URLs have to be shared.
