The benefits of it are a bit higher with C++ or other text based programming, since you can see actual diffs between your files, but having the ability to commit your changes into source control even with BP files is very useful if you ever have any issues and need to go back to an earlier version

To be fair, source control's relevancy for artists isn't as huge as it is for programmers writing code.

I know Git excels for codes, because plain texts can be diff-ed easier, but sucks for asset/binary files, as the diff is pretty much replacing an entire file. It can make clone size way bigger than it should've been.

Source control software like Git creates a "repository" for your project, and you can then "commit" changes into it. Changes which are committed go into a history log, and you can compare your current files against historic changes, or roll back to a previous version... it's very helpful for software projects

As long as you commit after doing some work you can always go back

So yeah, you can still use the old fashioned backup for assets/binary files.

BPs could be a more acceptable use, but it can balloon the commit files very quickly.

another reason is sometimes I make a copy of my project thats old and then I open two instances of UE4 to compare stuff im working on (depends what Im doing, really)

My git repo on my bigger project is 10 gigs atm, and for my other project 1 gig... so it's not too bad even with binary files

You can always prune the history if size becomes a problem, of course you won't be able to go back to those versions then

Oh right.. Git is not in cloud by default or anything... only if you set it up to do so. By default it just exists on your computer

Even if you do set it up to be on cloud, it still does a full sync between your pc and the repo on the server, so if there's any issues on the server you still have everything on your pc

to be honest the 100mb limit is a pain for gamedev

one of the biggest reasons for me never to use git again

It has worked very well for me at least, I don't have huge files but there's definitely some larger ones in there
