It was more important with older games when both hands were on the keyboard and you could be pressing directional keys and several combos at once. Or games where two players would control a character from each side of the keyboard.
Now controllers are popular and mice with extra buttons are commonplace, there's a lot less necessity for it, but occasionally there might be a badly built keyboard where Ctrl+Shift+Alt+X is broken.
I'm not sure Quake's even demanding in that respect. Whereas I remember in HL2 deathmatch you would crouch, jump, sprint, and mash the switch weapon key all at the same time while moving. That was the most extreme case I remember.
That's also a thing to think about. Many keyboards will expect you to use certain key combinations, and plan the ghostable maps around it, so using WADS and the option keys is safe, but if you're on a non-standard config like ESDF you can still easily run into ghosting.
