I thought he sold paypal

#

Before it was paypal

#

And that bankrolled other ventures

wicked saddle
#

Last documentary I saw he was ousted. They basically bought his sales, he formally recanted and it played out like he sold it.

#

But they didn't want him there.

night grove
#

Hmmm... That does sound plausible.

#

Given some of the founders I've "worked" with

night grove
#

I think I found a secret camera of Musk!

wicked saddle
#

Just some more..

regal pecan
#

Being fired isn't a reason to blacklist someone, on its own.

wicked saddle
#

No, I totally agree.

regal pecan
#

Although I'm fairly sure he started The Boring Company just because he liked the pun.

wicked saddle
#

Being fired isn't a reason for that. But.. His history shows that he is able to gain capital, but not maintain capital.

#

Two SpaceX flights before, he lost enough capital that he was worried about his home.

verbal junco
#

to be fair my point about him was not whether or not he can make a profit

#

it was more about driving forward innovation

#

which I think he can

wicked saddle
#

Sure.. okay.. then yeah..

#

I'll give you that.

#

This guy does prioritise innovation and put himself at risk for the sake of building new things.

#

That said.. He can't do that for long if he's homeless now, can he?

regal pecan
#

His approach to money I think is more like gambling. He'll bet everything he has on the next risk. What distinguishes success from failure is whether he has more money afterwards.

verbal junco
regal pecan
#

And what distinguishes gambling from investment is which direction the deck is stacked. In his case, clearly in his favor.

wicked saddle
#

I agree, he's the most world famous gambler.

verbal junco
#

or he could sleep in his tesla truck

#

😎

night grove
regal pecan
#

He'll probably make a Tesla RV if he needs to.

wicked saddle
#

No, what distinguishes gambling from investment is addiction.

verbal junco
#

tesla tiny house

regal pecan
#

You can be addicted to investing.

wicked saddle
#

Not in the same way,

#

Gambling is a "leap of faith" investment is at least an understanding before investment.

#

I would argue that he has made more leap of faith investments in the past five years than actually considering the loss in part of those investments.

#

But that's just entirely speculation.

night grove
#

I think he has largely been targeting technology that will put him in headlines

verbal junco
#

well his spaceX rockets certainly lept

wicked saddle
#

It was specifically, that after the second launch attempt that he decided to push all funds to the second launch attempt and after that he had $0 in his account.

#

That is a man who prides innovation, but does not know how to handle money.

wicked saddle
regal pecan
#

Or his account isn't $0, he simply didn't feel like having a large mansion to live in is necessary. (Or never intended to live in it. Real estate investment being a thing.)

wicked saddle
#

Sure, potentially also a thing. If we take him at his word, he was $0. But he must know his net worth, he could come back from it.

#

Either way, highly manipulative, and also - I do genuinely have to argue.

regal pecan
#

as many times as Elon has put his foot in his mouth

wicked saddle
#

If you were a core founder of Paypal, started SpaceX etc, and you put your last dime to SpaceX Launch.
What isn't to say Paypal, don't ironically, paypall you another $4000 based on the contract you signed? Worth.

#

My point is. The dude doesn't know how to handle money, or people. But he's damn good in a meeting room when signing a deal.

regal pecan
#

Worst case scenario, declare bankruptcy, clear your debts selling patents, start new venture but smaller.

wicked saddle
#

Exactly!

#

That's what he's done.

regal pecan
#

That sounds like having an understanding of the risk.

night grove
#

So that's where my brother's $4000 went...

wicked saddle
#

Compare him to a couple other billionares, or millionares that we know, they maintain interest and keep the company running.

#

He has had more companies fall, or be fired from in recent years than most others.

night grove
#

I'm inspired by the amount of tech he works in. But I have heard first hand accounts that working for him is miserable.

wicked saddle
#

Throw all your money at the wall, see what sticks. Keep it there, and go after the next venture. It's a horrible way to scalably run a business.

regal pecan
#

I must misunderstand, because that sounds like angel investing.

wicked saddle
#

In terms of business, Elon is following the multiple baskets theory. Have multiple companies, rather than one company. Throw your investment into one, even though you may lose it all.

#

But as the theory goes, don't keep all your eggs in one basket.

#

He's not angel investing though. He is the creator of the company and likely has angel investors, that is probably what saves him.

#

He becomes the scapegoat for a business, we have headlines like "SpaceX founder is homeless", but that company likely has angel investors who know how this is handeled.

#

Ah.. Im getting tired,

night grove
#

The very best investment strategy is OPM!

wicked saddle
#

but the dude knows how to traffic money. I wouldn't put him at all, in a position of managing a company though.

regal pecan
#

I'm not sold on the idea of a secret third party saving Elon from himself. Unless it's wallstreetbets.

wicked saddle
night grove
#

OPM = Other people's money

wicked saddle
#

It's a skill.

#

Can we switch topic? ^^

#

I wasn't particularly heightened on talking Elon anyway, but it did rise me.

#

Don't particularly want to talk about it anymore :p

regal pecan
#

Maybe I'm mixing them up. Is Bilderberg the conference with invited dignitaries or is it the forest retreat for US politicians?

#

It's definitely not the sex party. Or the other sex party. Or the other other sex party.

wicked saddle
#

No idea,

#

Seems to be political party related?

#

If that's the topic I'm out. xD

The way blender foundation works though it’s not like there is a central team of developers. The grants bring money in but the way it is all authored open source is what brings the money in. It’s a big win for companies to back blender when it means all those artists they pay subscriptions for will have the best and even the most tailored experience using the open source assets. The world of closed source is hideous imo

#

But I mean I get what your saying still I just kinda predict that painting right on top of a 3D viewport and such will be a future blender thing

#

And that no doubt will compete with gimp

wicked saddle
signal citrus
#

Except anyone can use the code

wicked saddle
#

The difference that blender has than any other project development is that it is legally community driven.

#

Like it is legally a "foundation" and from there the submissions are entirely community driven.

signal citrus
#

Well idk like the mirror geometry stuff in maya being broke for a decade is something you don’t find in blender

#

Like it’s not necessarily that community drives development as much as someone can literally poke into the code and fix broken things, then use that same tool to author stuff for some specific pipeline of their choice beyond MEL and maxscript stuffs

last matrix
signal citrus
#

Or that

wicked saddle
#

I'm not talking about the features. Blender is unqiue here in being a "foundation" legally and have multi billion dollar donations. No other 3D software has done this approach, legally.

signal citrus
#

Ye I just think a industry trending towards people specializing in a shared framework of everything is probably the heading

last matrix
signal citrus
#

I think once photoshop is phased out by blender, that is a win

wicked saddle
#

Godots in the same exact position as blender is, but fast-tracked. Godot has pushed for faster render engine side tech, but the entire engine seems from my perspective as just somewhat strapped together and trying to be a competitor as fast as it can.

#

Do not get me wrong, Godot is doing some seriously cool tech right now. But it is at most, a half finished engine, no one would turn to it to ship a full release title on it right now.

#

I will be still following it, Godot seems to be making cool stuff - but they are in the same world that Blender 1.8 was in. No one trusted it, No one wanted to work with it. And didn't trust their tools unless they were open source.

#

So that's my two cents.

last matrix
#

just need an open-source platform/storefront...

Do not associate them.

#

You mention steam and their cut.

last matrix
#

i guess if you want to keep it to that, i asked about godot but i have my own goals

wicked saddle
#

It doesn't matter realistically at that point.

#

Regardless of what tools, what engine, or how many staff you support.

#

If you are releasing on steam it is the 30%.

we have a price cap in this country but the cost to the supplier has risen 200% in the last year for energy. So they are going out of business left and right. Which means if the remaining powerhouses lobby to get rid of the cap, that gets offset to the consumer and we starve. We can barely afford it now. But that won't happen so instead the energy firms lobby to get tax breaks, grants and bailouts. So we pay through taxes instead.
It's like the world is a swizz.

The core promise of crypto was, way back when, to revolutionise online payments and economy. It's done nothing of the sort. It's actually quite a shit fest as a currency.

If your dollar tomorrow may be worth twice what it's worth right now, or half, or the same amount, you're probably going to be too paralysed to ever spend it. Money is money, it's there to be put to use or spent. Economies derail when people hoard money instead of circulating it in the economy, like at the start of 2020.

I still think Mozilla may as well accept crypto donations, so they can keep their mission going. Who knows, maybe some Amazon Pablo Escobar person really likes Firefox

Like c# requires you to write more explicit code entirely because of how low effort the compiler is

#

If your not writing code with lines of ICollection.Add and ICollection<int>.Add I mean your losing performance

#

That gain c# talks about is the one your bypassing by not caring

#

So why use c#

#

Speed isn’t one of those benefits unless your writing it that way is what I’m saying

#

But why are you using it if it’s essentially performing as well as python

#

Or JavaScript

signal citrus
#

Until it’s time to garbage collect

#

Then it haults every running thread

#

Well when you scale up you won’t

#

The more you add threads the more garbage your emitting

#

If string in c# was a value type that was reference counted instead of garbage collected a majority of the flaws with performance would go away. But the thing is the foundational stuff of .net isn’t always designed to be less garbage emitting

#

Until collection guh

#

You can say leaking memory is faster than managing it yeah

#

Like you know the pitfalls of having string code in c#

#

Yeah so I mean

#

Why use c#

#

Lol

#

Idk parallel node or python with forks and such, if your doing something that requires threading in c# it better be waiting on processes and stuff. Not number crunching

#

Lmao but pinvoke is terrible too

#

Like if your using unsafe with c# your using the best c#

#

And you have to understand the concept of pinning and all kinds of stuff

#

All because thread support

#

Which again locks up critically

#

Well am saying it’s a flawed way to go about it. Like the argument for c# is: I don’t care about performance and I like writing code in this way that is small and minimalistic, but unnecessarily type strong and generic

#

It exceeds in that

#

I personally don’t find value in that

#

It’s terrible for games and it is not fun to work with in a light manor

#

If I didn’t seriously think it is a waste of time I wouldn’t be saying it all. But yeah I know people enjoy it
