I think in their current state the rules make the community a welcoming and inclusive place for people most of the time (but not always) and part of the problem is that the rules are applied unevenly and make no attempt to be.

This means we're always in fear of getting strikes for normal chitchat in the down time of the channel because the mods (who don't actually go in the channel most of the time) have a rule against being offtopic.

No, I get it. This is actually the meat of the, I guess, "community design" argument, which we haven't touched on at all yet. The difference in perspective that's important here, and that's not always easy to see from an individual perspective, is that moderation policy as well as enforcement are not about fairness or justice or predictability. They are primarily a tool to 1. set boundaries by example, and 2. keep everyone who remains safe.
It's a necessary perspective shift from the individual good to the collective good. As an example, looking only at an individual case you might say "But this person is a good one, they don't deserve to be sanctioned just because they stepped over the line once", but that's not the moderation argument. The moderation argument is: "This [perhaps very active] person is contributing to a culture and rhetoric that goes against what we want to see in this community - by removing them, we make this expectation clear to everyone who is taking part in the conversation or just silently scrolling by."

Yeah the multi server thing in particular is a bit meh

with Irssi it was easy because it made no distinction between servers - you just joined as many servers as you liked, and the channels on them

then you just press alt-a and it takes you to the most recently active channel regardless of where it was

now I'm on more discord servers than that but majority of them I barely use :P

but because instead of being on the same irc channel on the same network, everyone just has their own discord server for their group of friends, so you just join all of them
