The irony is this makes the presenter's comparison with ancient civilization collapse meaningful: Historically most knowledge was fiercely protected by trade guilds which is why it was so easily lost once they collapsed. Anything that can't be publicly shared can be lost in an instant.

at a super high level, it doesn't so long as the allocation lifetime is properly tracked (but that's more or less automated in either idiomatic C++ (smart pointers) or properly written UE4 C++ (Reflection system, Garbage Collector) so you don't have to know about it).
but knowing more about how things physically work allows you to reason about the structure of your program. Stuff like "cache coherency" starts to form. My understanding is that any given variable can be in multiple caches in the CPU at the same time (when there's more than one logical core) so kinda indeterminate state until something writes and then the processor does some black magic to have a valid state.
Also, understanding where/how variables "live in memory" also sheds light on ***why *** floats are imprecise (instead of just "oh floating point has errors, i suppose").
I think Jon's point there is that if there's a new platform you want to write C++ on (quite unlikely case) or you can't use existing non-standard libraries/tools (eg, UE) then you'd be somewhat lost trying to make things from a low level (or, "from scratch").
But also a tirade against OOP because it tends to not be cache coherent at all, and he (likely correctly) attributes photoshop's slow chuggy startup to OOP/RAII being used haphazardly.

Well that goes to a point I was going to make about modern CPU exploits in regards to memory optimisations
its abit difficult to make everything nice and neat when you got bad actors coming in messing up the shrubberies
when you compare hardware over lots of generations you can see the improvement but when you compare Intel gen 10 to 11 what do you see, its not really as amazing as a 100x improvement is it

UE4 is a great example, early on it was super lean and fast, it got big and bulky then Epic went through optimised and it dropped in size, performance got better, then it started to bulk up again. Its not a static size

I have, bout the same as any RT implementation, worse performance for slightly better visuals
The real problem is we got so good at faking shit that the visual difference is so small when compared to good fake techniques
when I see RT on cars for eg I really dont go oh wow look at how that reflection ripples so accurately

in Cyberpunk 2077 with RT on you can actually see the object culling because of the RT lol
you see shadows pop in but its not because the shadow maps are popping in, its the actual geo hehe
I must admit UE4 RT does seem fairly performant compared to CoD Black Ops
I cap the game at 90fps, I get well over that without RT, put RT on and it dips under 60 quite often. In my testing on UE4 it sits on the 60fps cap

Well the thing is if you aim for non-RT youre getting easily between 50-100fps more headroom before doing any hardcore optimising
bit of a shame we cant just upgrade the RT cores separate 😛
I think a hybrid approach would be best, it lets the hardware focus more specifically where its needed without giving up too much artistic control. In Watch Dogs Legion for example the reflections look really cool but they dont look as nice as fake methods because you cant control reality in the same way as the fake methods. We saw similar things moving to PBR pipelines too, certain older artistic techniques no longer worked well
Similar thing to deterministic vehicle or destruction physics when you think about it, its super nice to have a realistic simulation but its difficult to control artistically

soon we'll have those really annoying sharp bright reflections when youre driving out in the sun that blind you and cause you to have an accident 😛

As you probably know i released modular swords few weeks ago
Was so happy about it
At the same evening i started to check fps performance in cooked build of game we making
And encountered that almost all was broken
Reason: at the start i was moving folders in UE4 and there was some small problems like redirectors and ghost files
And it broke half of assets
So i had to rebuild half of blueprints from the scratch
At the end i discovered that: you can choose specific map you need and UE only takes assets it needs
Moreover there was no need to move them - you can just use collections instead of folders
And have all clean and sorted
Cant say for sure: was that new knowledge worth it

I recently started trying out unreal after using/learning unity for a few years now (had a BAD experience with unity). I'm honestly so surprised and impressed with how much support unreal devs are putting out for us. Numerous livestreams going over concepts, free megascans, free monthly marketplace content. It's all great, along with the features that unreal has and how easy it is to prototype. And, most recently their metahuman stuff. WOW I can't believe I'm only finding about all this now
