it definitely looks like opacity. being they are hair cards. Same with the eyelashes and eyeballs

#

I guess there might be some issue with merging materials that have opacity as they would need another mode of output right?

#

It could be nice if it somehow singled out opacity materials and made a seperate combine opacity material or something, or even seperate ones if needs be

aye it felt like that at the start of lockdown. That's why I immediately took my kids out of school, started wearing masks and avoided going anywhere. None of us seem to have had it so that's all good, but it shamed me to see the rest of the town escalating it at first. They garnered responsibility eventually (minus a hiccup at new year that should be forgiven) and the town is doing ok in the stats now. But think about this.... at first, the government paid the town a large sum, in the millions, for covid business relief. But they kept the town open to visitors. They literally threw us to the wolves for a quid. That is not government of everyone, it's government of themselves and their assets.

zinc matrix
#

tfw you think your game would look 10x better in unlit mode

foggy path
#

I think it could be an interesting aesthetic

#

I was wondering how hard would it be to have like.. "sector lit" mode like in Build or such, where you can adjust the brightness of a polygon

#

I guess you could maybe store polygon brightness in custom UV's or something

fathom wadi
#

you could do that. I keep wondering when people are gonna start realising the amount of funky stuff you can do now we have UDIMs too. I mean, textures ain't just textures anymore. They are a database ๐Ÿ™‚

foggy path
#

Yeah, having that type of tooling as in the "old school" level editors is something that'd be handy for a project I was working on with some friends which had that type of aesthetic

#

eg. easily just being able to click a wall and assign a material, adjust its position, tiling and such

#

yeah you can do all that in blender but it's cumbersome

fathom wadi
#

it is in blender, but not in Maya. Blender still has some work to do there but they did some updates recently for vertex animation. Still not Maya levels of comfort tho

foggy path
#

and don't even get me started on doing spritesheets from greenscreened actors and then doing spritesheet limb-based hitboxes lol

mint onyx
#

it feels alright on mobile Thinkawingur

#

terrible on desktop

foggy path
#

I think the tech I built to be able to detect which body part was hit from a sprite might actually be the only implementation of that that I've heard exists... as in, pixel perfect detection of which limb of the sprite was hit

fathom wadi
#

Is this for UE? If so, paper2d or some arbitrary setup ?

foggy path
#

yeah with UE paper2d

#

it's probably not a particularly efficient system but I couldn't really figure out any better way of doing it

#

basically each sprite frame has a version of it which has unique colors on the different body parts

south nimbus
#

completely agree with lushuangfw

foggy path
#

so whenever you shoot and it does hit detection, it does a scene capture from the player's perspective, and checks what color the hit would have landed on :D

south nimbus
#

not working well on desktop

#

bad readability, distracting colors and contrast

#

it's slicker in some way, but at what price

fathom wadi
#

@foggy path scene capture sounds heavy. You could color test it with a shader tho

foggy path
#

Perhaps, I just have no freaking clue how to make that work :D

#

We never noticed any framerate hitching or anything with the scene capture system though, since it'd really do it once every few frames tops since there wouldn't be any weapons that shoot so fast it'd have to do it every single frame

fathom wadi
#

sure. if it works, ship it ๐Ÿ™‚

#

it's a nice idea for sure. I'd probably end up with several ways to prototype something like that. Reminds me of old Flash dev work

foggy path
#

Do you have any suggestions on anything to look at for the shader type detection though? I've heard you can do stuff like that with shaders but I'm not quite sure how I'd pull information out from a shader since as far as I can tell it's just a rendering thing

fathom wadi
#

to be sure I'd have to google some stuff, but from previous experience I know it's possible. I'd get the hit position and during the raymarching through the pixels I would test the color of the pixel at the hit location. Something along those lines.

foggy path
#

interesting, if the project ever gets back on track I'll have to look into it :D

fathom wadi
#

I keep meaning to do more shader work but I ended up burned out for a while and took up more art based learning routes to get back into things. So I've spent more time in Blender this past 4 months than I have with Unreal or anything else

For a rotary machine gun using 6.5mm high velocity AP rounds, how does 1500 rounds/min when mounted on a tripod and 4500 on vehicles and mechs sound

#

So far of the gun

humble remnant
#

If you plan on counting every bullet as its own thing, I'd advise against it

#

That's 25 bullets per second

thin glacier
#

I take it realism and performance are once again at odds when it comes to ballistics?

humble remnant
#

Absolutely

#

But if you plan on emulating ballistics of 25 bullets per second

#

That might as well be bordering on masochism

dense storm

One thing to keep in mind is that as Iโ€™ve stated before, the minigun will be extremely rare, and the AP ammo it uses isnโ€™t too common either

#

Itโ€™ll only be mounted on tripods or vehicles, and will have between 1-2 minutes of uninterrupted fire at most

#

The ammo boxes built for tripods will hold 500 rounds (20 seconds of fire at 1500 rounds/min) and mechs will hold 6000 rounds (roughly 1.3 minutes at 4500 rounds/min)

Hey guys, I am feeling demotivated with game dev recently but I just had this idea and wanted to know what you guys think as maybe it will strike a spark for me again.

Souls like based around sound and music, basically as you clear areas you will find the people playing the (fifth, first, etc) sixth harmonic of the Edith Church.

Once you find them they start playing at your shrine instead of where you found them, kinda like dark souls.

Once you have found all 6 you may head to the church and they will play the music to summon the final boss that has corrupted the frequency or harmony of the world.
So essentially music has much more magical and mystical properties in this world.
A fun combat idea could be to do with using sound/timing and rhythm to make combat cool. So as you want to attack you first need to activate your chime or whatever and that will start playing a frequency and if you strike at the right time it will do a better swing or whatever, however maybe there should be combo's like if you are over time over time and then on time, or if you are early, on time, on time with the button presses, then do different combos based on that
The respawn system can be to do with how your chime rings in the wind when u are dead or something which will respawn you
The parry system could also be to do with your chime or something like that

Please let me know what you guys think!

Not sure if it applies to you

solid zodiac
#

ah i see ty for explaining

tranquil sonnet
#

But really, make a quick prototype in a few days, something you can "play", with the bare minimum mechanics that make up your game, then see whether it's something that excites you and makes you want to continue.

humble remnant
#

I designed a specific character like that, for a hero-based brawler however

#

So decently different

#

Crypt of the necrodancer can be a nice point of interest

#

But souls-like will be difficult to make work with rhythm

#

Unless you take some significant liberties, like speeding up animations a ton

#

(And obviously the damage you deal/take should be lowered to make for the same time of a battle)

#

But I think the closest thing is making it similar to Crypt of the necrodancer

#

It's essentially a turn-based game where you execute your turn on the beat

foggy path
#

isn't Bullets Per Minute kinda like that as well

#

but more real time, so maybe some ideas from that can be adapted into a melee combat game

humble remnant
thin glacier
#

Every cartridge will persist as its own object

humble remnant
#

You might want to look into making your own projectile that should be significantly more optimized

thin glacier
#

What if the game used a fake projectile - rays created sequentially along a path similar to an actual projectile

#

Cases will be reusable, but bullets are pretty much gone once theyโ€™re fired

#

I still want to keep these rifled bullet meshes

#

No idea what Iโ€™ll used them for if I go with rays though

humble remnant
#

You don't even need this much detail

sage ermine
#

so still just a wee bit of trouble with the forums eh?

thin glacier
#

Iโ€™ve completely figured out how Iโ€™ll set up the minigun:
Tripod -

chassis for the gun w/ grips + trigger, pic rail for sight, and battery
500 round ammo box w/linkless belt feed
1500 rounds/min
Mech mount -
fixed chassis built into the mechโ€™s frame
connection for power supply + trigger
6000 round ammo drum w/ linkless feed
4500 rounds/min

humble remnant
#

One thing I won't understand

#

Why are you going for extreme realism when your game has a mech that you can ride

#

Feels a bit overdesigned

thin glacier
#

Itโ€™ll be set around the late 21st - early 22nd century, and we already have some promising tech at the moment

#

If anything, the design Iโ€™m going for will be closer to an oversized exoskeleton than a mech

humble remnant
#

I meant overdesigned for gameplay

#

If you're going for realistic ballistics, you'll most probably have snipers/high powered rifles or some assault rifles most commonly to showcase the tech and make your core loop around it

#

A mech just feels out of position for a setting like that

thin glacier
#

Itโ€™ll be an open-world survival, and hunting rifles will be ideal in quite a few situations

#

As for the setting, think of something close to RAGE. Itโ€™s a post-apocalyptic environment, but thereโ€™s still plenty of working tech

humble remnant
#

I meant that it's probs out of place

#

If everyone has to still keep in mind ballistics while some dude holds left click in the vague direction of a bush, it kinda eliminates your core loop

#

If your core loop of ballistics is satisfying, reward good players with more rewards for said ballistics, like a handheld anti-material cannon for example

#

Rewarding players with eliminating the core loop isn't a good reward

#

It's a lot more different to be killed by someone who still had to aim a sniper correctly than someone who spammed 75 bullets per second in your vague direction

broken sigil
#

the thing is simulating a bullet (projectiles, weapons in general) accurately is not worth it, it's one of those things no one will notice even with just a generic approximation if it feels fun

humble remnant
#

If anything, it makes combat feel worse in close quarters

#

The micro delays when someone strafes makes for some horrific situations where you aimed at your enemy but nothing hit

broken sigil
#

escape from tarkov with its weapon simulation is very close to being annoying but it is still fun to play

fathom wadi
#

any FPS game I have to adjust for bullet drop, I dislike. Especially when reaction times matter.

humble remnant
#

Arma is pretty much the most accurate you can get with ballistics, but I wouldn't recommend someone recreate that, you need a really dedicated playerbase to keep you going

#

And, for the love of god, please avoid live service if you're trying to go with an Arma-like

#

The entire thing keeping that game alive is player hosted servers and community made mods

broken sigil
#

I'm fine with bullet drop, it's something I can adjust to but when some games make it so your gun is swaying all over the place when you are aiming, like you went shooting after 10 beers, that crap is annoying
Apex wouldn't work without bullet drop for example, players would be beaming each other from across the map

humble remnant
#

Apex works best in mid range combat

fathom wadi
#

yeah

#

I hate apex bullet drop tho

humble remnant
#

CoD works best for close range

#

PUBG works best for long range

#

But they all use different ways of bullet travel

#

For CoD, bullets you see you'd hit are bullets that you'd hit

#

Since the game works off of clientside hits a lot to make it feel less bullshit to you

thin glacier
#

The project Iโ€™m working on will be single player only

broken sigil
#

bullets in apex are relatively slow compared to CoD, but it works, it is more oriented towards mid to close range combat

humble remnant
thin glacier
#

As for combat, NPCs will have the exact same handicaps as the player - bullets will be affected by gravity and possibly wind, and recoil will be based on physics rather than animations

humble remnant
#

Ohno

#

Making NPCs account for ballistics

#

I had enough trouble making them predict the player

thin glacier
#

As for recoil, think of something like TABG

#

The main difference is that the bodies will be much more rigid, so they wonโ€™t go flying around every time they fire

#

This also means different foregrips will have noticeable effects

foggy path
#

I dunno, I think it's just that they were given a brief "make an ad with a laptop" and they just did that

pearl elk
#

yeah thats probably it, but I guess you dont see that as a problem

foggy path
#

Not as a huge problem no, since it's not advertising macs

#

or any specific brand of laptop either, and the laptop is effectively not identifiable in the picture unless you find the original photo that was used

pearl elk
#

Its advertising Intel gen 11 chips

#

which that Mac actually isnt

#

its a stock photo

foggy path
#

Yeah but would you have known this without that article pointing it out because someone dug out the original image that was used?

I guess you enjoy zooming at ads more than I do lol

yeah it's not that easy for me to say, a bunch of Dells look like Apples at a glance to me :P

probably some others too, because everyone likes to copy apple's designs

pearl elk
#

But you know the difference if I say the name of each though right

#

if I point at an Apple and say Intel, point at a Dell and go AMD

fresh heath
pearl elk
#

Intels whole problem is image, this doesnt help. They needed Intel Inside just so average users knew wtf an Intel even was

#

to them its a Dell or an Apple, they dont care about a stamp on a CPU plate

#

Intel could disappear and most people wouldnt even notice lol

foggy path
#

Yeah that's true, average user doesn't care so much

#

Intel definitely has more name recognition than AMD though

#

(or ARM)

pearl elk
#

yeah but has ARM needed name recognition to take the market

#

I mean arguably Intel should be going at ARM not Apple or Mac

fresh heath
#

Intel doesn't have to go against only one competitor

pearl elk
#

but they are for whatever reason, they singled out Apple

#

even if they took down Apple, ARM is still holding its ground

fresh heath
#

In their advertisement, yeah because Apple is more visible

foggy path
#

they're just using apple's name for leverage

pearl elk
#

clout chasing

foggy path
#

there's no point for them to go against ARM because nobody knows what that is lol

pearl elk

Well seems even the tech heads in here cant tell the difference between a Mac and a PC so I dont think Intel is going to win any points ๐Ÿ˜›

fresh heath
#

#

And not for the lack of trying

#

There were other attempts to deliver an Arm desktop/server

pearl elk
#

theres heaps of ARM servers now

fresh heath
#

Apple is the first one that is actually dangerous

pearl elk
#

I dont think thats it at all, Apple dont have to worry about Intel

#

They had a set of requirements Intel screwed the pooch and now is in the dog house

#

These marketing campaigns stink of desperation, they cant even get their own message straight

foggy path
#

I think you're overanalyzing the fact that some marketing guy put a picture of a mac into an intel ad

#

:D

#

I mean if that's what you're basing that on

pearl elk
#

you seem to think because its just some rando without a clue it wont affect Intels image

#

my argument is that Intel should care about their image if they want to take on the likes of Apple, cuz for Apple, image is everything

#

Intel say, oh theyre just a lifestyle company but thats exactly why they will win

foggy path
#

Yeah it's a bit of a tricky question because Intel is significantly less average consumer focused than Apple imo

pearl elk
#

people dont buy $2500 pants cuz of their feature set ๐Ÿ™‚

I mean yeah it's definitely a pretty silly mistake to put a product that doesn't use an Intel CPU into an ad about Intel CPUs, which should have been checked by whoever commissioned this at Intel

pearl elk
#

well that Mac does use an Intel CPU, but thats why its confusing, cuz Intel are no dont buy Macs even though they helped make Macs for so long

foggy path

But given it actually links to BestBuy... it's also somewhat of a possibility this is actually a BestBuy campaign and Intel just posted it on their account

Oooh @jovial talon Will give it a shot, but I've also reached out to Github directly to see if there's anything they can help with.

#

My worry here is that although I can claim it under the name squatting policy, but the fact that it becomes open, and I've now just tweeted and stuff.

#

I'd honestly prefer if I could just complete the bounty knowing that it's secure.

#

It also has changed, and doesn't really allow for basically direct messaging to git on the policy abuse.

So I'll wait to see what Github says from my message to them :3

#

And now for a cursed idea: a rotary MG modified with a stock, pistol grip, vertical foregrip, and slow motor

#

The clutch for the ammo feed will also be modified to engage at the lower speed

#

And now Iโ€™m not sure whether to go with a vertical foregrip or horizontal like the MG46 (Wolfenstein)

fathom wadi
#

make love, not war

humble remnant
#

Does it even need to be rotary

fathom wadi
#

i read it as rotissarie and started to get hungry for rotating fowl

humble remnant
#

The extra weight of 5 extra barrels makes it impractical

#

The slow motor kinda eliminates the point of a rotary MG too

#

Unless you're shooting 20mm ammo which won't be handheld in any case

thin glacier
#

Itโ€™ll still have a decent fire rate - between 950-1000 rounds/min

humble remnant
#

Still

#

The MG42 did similar firerate

#

If not more

#

1200 RPM actually

thin glacier
#

Plus, it still has the benefits of allowing more time for the barrels to cool and firing if there happens to be a dud round

#

As for weight, thereโ€™s a bit of background I need to address - before the apocalypse, tech had reached the point where a human mind could be transferred to an android body. The NPC using this gun will be a survivor from before the event that had gone through the transfer

#

For the player, thatโ€™ll be an option in the character creation

fathom wadi
#

I think we need to improve gun usage time. Currently they are only useful when you want to shoot something. I think someone should allocate other tasks to a gun. Like the brace on a hanging fruit basket, or a crutch for a lame man. Perhaps even use them for golf. Why not double up a .357 into a 3-wood. Who knows, might even get a hole in one, and if not, you can shoot another hole instead. ๐Ÿ˜„

thin glacier
#

turn a machine gun barrel into the worldโ€™s least energy efficient stove

fathom wadi
#

unhook the barrel and use it as a telescope. Or have attachables, like a silencer would, but make it house tools like drills or a washing up sponge. The possibilities of gun cosplay are endless.

humble remnant
#

Even then, considering superhuman strength, I think I'd rather carry an MG42 around

#

It can kinda benefit the setting by it being a war veteran too

fathom wadi
#

I'd rather carry the notion that guns are mechanical penis extensions but I know people like their guns so I'll not preach.

humble remnant
thin glacier
#

This, by the way, is the most effort Iโ€™ve put into a rotary gun in Blender

#

yes, it'll have all 6 bolts in UE4. I only need the one mesh in Blender for now

#

Most of it wonโ€™t be visible while the gun is put together, but Iโ€™m making every weapon as detailed as I can for two reasons - theyโ€™ll be seen disassembled at some points and I want to make sure theyโ€™d actually work

fathom wadi
#

nice work. Blender rules.

humble remnant
#

I have but one request

#

Please do not use the same model for disassembly and gunplay sections

thin glacier
#

Iโ€™ll need the actors and meshes to exist, but they wonโ€™t have any collisions while the gun is assembled

#

Regarding the actors, this will be my second attempt at a modular gun system. The first worked pretty well, though I burned myself out before i had the chance to let the player use it

#

Iโ€™ll try to have as few actors as possible, though each one will have multiple meshes. The main section of the gun, for example, will include the main body, rotor, and bolt assemblies

thin glacier
#

Every major weapon component will have an overall condition thatโ€™s brought down by wear or physical damage

#

Say the clutch in a minigun stops working. You can take it off of its mount and either repair the clutch or swap it out with a new one

#

Similar to New Vegas, lower condition also increases the chance of outright failure

humble remnant
#

I meant that

#

Don't include the bolt/firing pin/internal fire group during the actual gunfights

#

Keep them as stats that have durability or whatever

#

When you disassemble the gun, add those and apply layers based on their stats

#

It's needless detail that won't realistically be seen by the player

#

From experience I can tell you that simulating the firing pin dropping, open bolt firing, it doesn't feel good because there's a delay

#

Even if it's just 1 frame, it's felt harshly

#

You may calculate the delay between shots based on the durability of components

#

But don't simulate them 100% accurately because from all the detail it looks like horrible optimization rather than a design choice

thin glacier
#

Probably a dumb question, but will turning off collisions and visibility help at all

#

Or is just having the meshes at all problematic

humble remnant
#

If it's a skeletal mesh, it will be rendered

#

If it's a static mesh, it depends

#

Either way, it's better to have a full detail disassembly model and a cut down gameplay model to save up on resources

#

You don't need to have full bolt detail during gameplay, just enough to make the gun look like it's working

#

Also one tip for a more niche game, start out your game with essentially max gear, then take it away

#

So, have a sort of demo mission where you're using a 408 Cheytac to demonstrate the mechanics first hand, then slap the player around into having a barrel scraper Kar98 to start off the real progression

#

You could try doing that by having a supportive "spotter" character that tells you all the details for how to aim at your enemies, then present the player with the option to try on their own

#

And then correspondingly if the player does well on their own, give an extra reward at the start, like a special Luger that they have at their side

#

Or another reward that you feel is appropriate, just something that speeds up progression a bit so that more experienced players skip out on the tutorial section, or replaying the game from the start lets you skip a tutorial you've already been through

thin glacier
#

The game is going to have two modes - realistic and casual, with the latter being closer to any other FPS

#

The mode will also change the tutorial. Casual will start the player at a computer playing a generic FPS while Realistic will place them at a shooting range with a pistol

humble remnant
#

The weapons I'm throwing here are just for reference, they are at your own choice after all

thin glacier
#

The overall function of the weapons will be similar between the two modes, though Casual will include less maintenance and more familiar gameplay

#

Double-action revolvers, for example, will have the delay when pulling the trigger regardless

humble remnant
#

For those revolvers, look into how CSGO's R8 works

#

It'll feel really bad if you left click and it's locked into a small delay before firing

#

Though double actions usually have a single action mode too

thin glacier
#

I could make it so that firing a revolver with the hammer already cocked reduces the delay a bit. The cylinder still has to rotate, but the trigger pull isnโ€™t as heavy

humble remnant
#

And the point with starting the player with the best gear for a mission serves 2 purposes:
-- Hooking on a player with how your mechanics work
-- Having an actual demo for your game that you can demonstrate on video/promotional material/conventions

thin glacier
#

Dexterity and strength, by the way, will affect how quickly the player can pull the trigger

#

Itโ€™ll mostly be the former though

#

Now that I think about it, strength will affect how long the actual pull takes while dexterity can determine the time between releasing the trigger and firing the next shot

humble remnant
#

Double actions still rotate the cylinder when you're manually cocking the hammer, so that's needless by itself

thin glacier
#

Right, forgot about that part

#

So pulling the trigger with the hammer already cocked will be almost effortless

humble remnant
#

Also in 60 fps scenario, players won't notice the animations of the hammer/firing pin dropping

#

It'll be pretty much snapped from cocked to fired

#

That's why I'm saying that adding a micro delay will feel bad

#

For players it'll feel worse than it is

#

Look for what the player will realistically see instead of what you consider realistic

#

Not even Arma went into the detail of micro delays from firing pins

#

Plus, don't add too many stats that the player has to worry about

#

Simply upgrading their weapon is enough concern for looting hot spots

#

At most make the stats affect reload/cock/bolt speed, but don't make them affect trigger pulls when they want to fire a bullet

#

They're already performing the action of pulling the trigger on the controller or clicking a mouse button

#

And some of the weapons have a trigger pull about as quick as the latter

#

Including any more delay than the player makes themselves will make them play way too cautiously

#

Many games are the most fun when the player takes risks

#

And if your mechanics discourage risks due to going the extra mile for realism, it'll make your game either boring or frustrating, and that's not a spot you want a player to be

Yeah and no. Some of these make sense tho. Steam is not only a marketplace, it is a social platform.

#

Afaik, EGS is too... lacking. Not user btw.

hasty cargo

I could be wrong here, but from early on I thought the goal was never to replace steam but simply to pressure steam to lower their rev cut from the big 30%, that's what these type of people have been ignoring since the start either by ignorance or maliciously

all these free games they get are games that atleast mostly, they won't buy on steam

There were gossips recently.

torpid star

yeah I've heard that Microsoft was interested in buying Discord. I'm sure they've learned their lesson with Skype, hopefully they don't mock up discord as they did skype.

#

there's also matrix/riot or whatever it's called now, a seemingly good decentralized alternative but without the brand recognition of discord.

foggy path
#

I wonder whatever's happening with IRCv3

torpid star
#

what's that?

foggy path

an update to the IRC protocol to support some more modern features

looks like their website is still being updated at least

torpid star
#

I'm sure a vast majority of technically inclined people prefer irc over discord and use it everyday

or usergroups /s

foggy path
#

I think IRC is better due to it being effectively an open alternative where anyone can host their own if they feel like it

#

It has technical hurdles in being more complicated to use

but I don't think it's something they couldn't solve

I think that matrix/riot actually uses IRC(v?) behind the scenes

Why don't more people use html/css for game ui? It's a great way to create UI's easily. The engine comes with chromium, shouldn't be too difficult to create something like UWebClientViewport

#

and just serve local html pages for UI.

#

don't know about perf, but using minimal js might help

foggy path
#

Yeah

#

It would be pretty handy imo

#

If there was a builtin method for it which gave you events etc. like UMG then I'm sure it'd be more common

#

fwiw I think PUBG uses that method

#

well, not sure what they use for their game hud and such, but the main menu at least used to be a web page - to the point that they had a freaking reload button in the corner because it would stop working so often lol

median wraith
#

Then someones found how had it is

#

UMG system is way better

#

html and css need a whole extenside setup in order to get anything equal

foggy path
#

Eh, I don't know

#

Styling a UI in HTML is a lot simpler than in UMG, because you can just apply a bunch of CSS and everything looks uniform

#

The main limitation I can think of is animation, but even that can be easily alleviated by something like GSAP

#

Otherwise it works pretty much the same way as UMG I think

median wraith
#

Well same with UMG if you do base classes

foggy path
#

I haven't tried in C++ but in BP's it's kinda clunky, especially if you want to do "custom controls" eg. say a button with a text label inside it

#

If you want to expose any custom styling on them you have to expose them as variables which leads to a whole lot of extra code to deal with something like that which would be trivial in CSS

normal prism
#

Unity is sort of doing it

#

With their new UI system, which basically works like HTML/CSS

median wraith
#

Well I think the problem is rather someone at Epic missed parts there, plus someones aren't even exposed

#

Like the scrolbars in some cases

normal prism
#

Pretty cool tbh

median wraith
#

But in games usually the "overall style"

#

have nothing to do

#

There is no game on earth that uses a common style across all menus etc

#

HTML have tags

#

here you don't

#

but use different classes

foggy path
#

Sure but even my main menu is annoying because it's so freaking fiddly to style everything

#

It could easily be solved by referencing classes or base classes instead of tags

#

or allowing you to define a style class name (eg. similar to class="foo" in html)

#

in very UI-heavy games this is probably a major headache, thankfully I don't have that much UI... yet

#

it's not something you can't fix but the solutions are also kind of annoying lol

median wraith
#

Man I do these manually, yeah there is limitations but still better to me than HTML

#

and I did many webs I have to say

foggy path
#

When was the last time you did those?

median wraith
#

the Grid aligns are a pain in the ass

foggy path
#

Not anymore with CSS grid module and flexbox module :P

median wraith
#

2019

foggy path
#

Grid and flexbox are very convenient for aligning content in various ways you'd need in UI's

median wraith
#

I'm technical artist in all the range like

#

To make things work I like code

#

to make visual things I don't like to use code

#

UMG on this case is way better than design a system on css

foggy path
#

Yeah from that point of view perhaps

#

there are visual tools to work with these things in html/css too though

median wraith
#

I remember when I did some tool in VB back in the days for html
