it definitely looks like opacity. being they are hair cards. Same with the eyelashes and eyeballs
I guess there might be some issue with merging materials that have opacity as they would need another mode of output right?
It could be nice if it somehow singled out opacity materials and made a seperate combine opacity material or something, or even seperate ones if needs be

Looks like the new Assassins Creed

took it to blender and setup some materials. Managed to grab the opacity mask which is nice. Now I can slot it in another material slot and take it back to Unreal. Got to fix those eyes tho.

aye it felt like that at the start of lockdown. That's why I immediately took my kids out of school, started wearing masks and avoided going anywhere. The PS3 isn't dead for those who still have one, or those who love the retro scene. My kid was actually crying because she's invested so much in the minecraft on her ps3 and now she won't be able to update it with new skinpacks etc.
I know Sony are a bunch of serious arseholes when they want to be (got stung 3k myself on their scams) but this feels like a golden handshake to everyone who made it possible in the first place.
I was pretty disappointed when they closed down the dev for Vita. I would have liked to see it get a lot more support. She should be able to cloud save her minecraft stuff though and at least download it on another platform. TBH the whole windows10 universal version is a bit of a rip off since it charges for all the things that were and still are free with the Java version.

it's a console that's two generations old... companies haven't really ever supported that old stuff in the past either

Yeah, having that type of tooling as in the "old school" level editors is something that'd be handy for a project I was working on with some friends which had that type of aesthetic
eg. easily just being able to click a wall and assign a material, adjust its position, tiling and such
yeah you can do all that in blender but it's cumbersome
it is in blender, but not in Maya. Blender still has some work to do there but they did some updates recently for vertex animation. Still not Maya levels of comfort tho
and don't even get me started on doing spritesheets from greenscreened actors and then doing spritesheet limb-based hitboxes lol

I think the tech I built to be able to detect which body part was hit from a sprite might actually be the only implementation of that that I've heard exists... as in, pixel perfect detection of which limb of the sprite was hit

it's probably not a particularly efficient system but I couldn't really figure out any better way of doing it
basically each sprite frame has a version of it which has unique colors on the different body parts

so whenever you shoot and it does hit detection, it does a scene capture from the player's perspective, and checks what color the hit would have landed on :D

We never noticed any framerate hitching or anything with the scene capture system though, since it'd really do it once every few frames tops since there wouldn't be any weapons that shoot so fast it'd have to do it every single frame

Do you have any suggestions on anything to look at for the shader type detection though? I've heard you can do stuff like that with shaders but I'm not quite sure how I'd pull information out from a shader since as far as I can tell it's just a rendering thing
to be sure I'd have to google some stuff, but from previous experience I know it's possible. I'd get the hit position and during the raymarching through the pixels I would test the color of the pixel at the hit location. Something along those lines.

I keep meaning to do more shader work but I ended up burned out for a while and took up more art based learning routes to get back into things. So I've spent more time in Blender this past 4 months than I have with Unreal or anything else

There were some cool mods... I used one Borealis which put some trees around Whiterun. Also swapped out the trees (had to build LODs) with one of the pop modes, later with some more 3D trees.

One thing to keep in mind is that as Iโve stated before, the minigun will be extremely rare, and the AP ammo it uses isnโt too common either
Itโll only be mounted on tripods or vehicles, and will have between 1-2 minutes of uninterrupted fire at most
The ammo boxes built for tripods will hold 500 rounds (20 seconds of fire at 1500 rounds/min) and mechs will hold 6000 rounds (roughly 1.3 minutes at 4500 rounds/min)
look into object pooling, you'll need it (if you are not going to use traces instead)

Hey guys, I am feeling demotivated with game dev recently but I just had this idea and wanted to know what you guys think as maybe it will strike a spark for me again.
Souls like based around sound and music, basically as you clear areas you will find the people playing the (fifth, first, etc) sixth harmonic of the Edith Church.
Once you find them they start playing at your shrine instead of where you found them, kinda like dark souls.
Once you have found all 6 you may head to the church and they will play the music to summon the final boss that has corrupted the frequency or harmony of the world.
So essentially music has much more magical and mystical properties in this world.
A fun combat idea could be to do with using sound/timing and rhythm to make combat cool. So as you want to attack you first need to activate your chime or whatever and that will start playing a frequency and if you strike at the right time it will do a better swing or whatever, however maybe there should be combo's like if you are over time over time and then on time, or if you are early, on time, on time with the button presses, then do different combos based on that
The respawn system can be to do with how your chime rings in the wind when u are dead or something which will respawn you
The parry system could also be to do with your chime or something like that

But really, make a quick prototype in a few days, something you can "play", with the bare minimum mechanics that make up your game, then see whether it's something that excites you and makes you want to continue.
I designed a specific character like that, for a hero-based brawler however
So decently different
Crypt of the necrodancer can be a nice point of interest
But souls-like will be difficult to make work with rhythm
Unless you take some significant liberties, like speeding up animations a ton
(And obviously the damage you deal/take should be lowered to make for the same time of a battle)
But I think the closest thing is making it similar to Crypt of the necrodancer
It's essentially a turn-based game where you execute your turn on the beat
isn't Bullets Per Minute kinda like that as well
but more real time, so maybe some ideas from that can be adapted into a melee combat game

One thing I won't understand
Why are you going for extreme realism when your game has a mech that you can ride
Feels a bit overdesigned
Itโll be set around the late 21st - early 22nd century, and we already have some promising tech at the moment
If anything, the design Iโm going for will be closer to an oversized exoskeleton than a mech

If you're going for realistic ballistics, you'll most probably have snipers/high powered rifles or some assault rifles most commonly to showcase the tech and make your core loop around it
A mech just feels out of position for a setting like that
Itโll be an open-world survival, and hunting rifles will be ideal in quite a few situations
As for the setting, think of something close to RAGE. Itโs a post-apocalyptic environment, but thereโs still plenty of working tech

If everyone has to still keep in mind ballistics while some dude holds left click in the vague direction of a bush, it kinda eliminates your core loop
If your core loop of ballistics is satisfying, reward good players with more rewards for said ballistics, like a handheld anti-material cannon for example
Rewarding players with eliminating the core loop isn't a good reward
It's a lot more different to be killed by someone who still had to aim a sniper correctly than someone who spammed 75 bullets per second in your vague direction
the thing is simulating a bullet (projectiles, weapons in general) accurately is not worth it, it's one of those things no one will notice even with just a generic approximation if it feels fun
If anything, it makes combat feel worse in close quarters
The micro delays when someone strafes makes for some horrific situations where you aimed at your enemy but nothing hit
escape from tarkov with its weapon simulation is very close to being annoying but it is still fun to play
any FPS game I have to adjust for bullet drop, I dislike. Especially when reaction times matter.
Arma is pretty much the most accurate you can get with ballistics, but I wouldn't recommend someone recreate that, you need a really dedicated playerbase to keep you going
And, for the love of god, please avoid live service if you're trying to go with an Arma-like
The entire thing keeping that game alive is player hosted servers and community made mods
I'm fine with bullet drop, it's something I can adjust to but when some games make it so your gun is swaying all over the place when you are aiming, like you went shooting after 10 beers, that crap is annoying
Apex wouldn't work without bullet drop for example, players would be beaming each other from across the map
Apex works best in mid range combat
CoD works best for close range
PUBG works best for long range
But they all use different ways of bullet travel
For CoD, bullets you see you'd hit are bullets that you'd hit
Since the game works off of clientside hits a lot to make it feel less bullshit to you
The project Iโm working on will be single player only
bullets in apex are relatively slow compared to CoD, but it works, it is more oriented towards mid to close range combat

As for combat, NPCs will have the exact same handicaps as the player - bullets will be affected by gravity and possibly wind, and recoil will be based on physics rather than animations

The main difference is that the bodies will be much more rigid, so they wonโt go flying around every time they fire

The M134 has one that prevents ammo from feeding into the gun until the rotor is up to speed, though the delay is a fraction of a second
Then again, the clutch will also be needed to prevent feeding as the rotor winds down after the trigger is released

And now for a cursed idea: a rotary MG modified with a stock, pistol grip, vertical foregrip, and slow motor
The clutch for the ammo feed will also be modified to engage at the lower speed
And now Iโm not sure whether to go with a vertical foregrip or horizontal like the MG46 (Wolfenstein)

For the player, thatโll be an option in the character creation
I think we need to improve gun usage time. Currently they are only useful when you want to shoot something. I think someone should allocate other tasks to a gun. Like the brace on a hanging fruit basket, or a crutch for a lame man. Perhaps even use them for golf. Why not double up a .357 into a 3-wood. Who knows, might even get a hole in one, and if not, you can shoot another hole instead. ๐

Most of it wonโt be visible while the gun is put together, but Iโm making every weapon as detailed as I can for two reasons - theyโll be seen disassembled at some points and I want to make sure theyโd actually work

Please do not use the same model for disassembly and gunplay sections
Iโll need the actors and meshes to exist, but they wonโt have any collisions while the gun is assembled
Regarding the actors, this will be my second attempt at a modular gun system. The first worked pretty well, though I burned myself out before i had the chance to let the player use it
Iโll try to have as few actors as possible, though each one will have multiple meshes. The main section of the gun, for example, will include the main body, rotor, and bolt assemblies
Every major weapon component will have an overall condition thatโs brought down by wear or physical damage
Say the clutch in a minigun stops working. You can take it off of its mount and either repair the clutch or swap it out with a new one
Similar to New Vegas, lower condition also increases the chance of outright failure
I meant that
Don't include the bolt/firing pin/internal fire group during the actual gunfights
Keep them as stats that have durability or whatever
When you disassemble the gun, add those and apply layers based on their stats
It's needless detail that won't realistically be seen by the player
From experience I can tell you that simulating the firing pin dropping, open bolt firing, it doesn't feel good because there's a delay
Even if it's just 1 frame, it's felt harshly
You may calculate the delay between shots based on the durability of components
But don't simulate them 100% accurately because from all the detail it looks like horrible optimization rather than a design choice
Probably a dumb question, but will turning off collisions and visibility help at all
Or is just having the meshes at all problematic
If it's a skeletal mesh, it will be rendered
If it's a static mesh, it depends
Either way, it's better to have a full detail disassembly model and a cut down gameplay model to save up on resources
You don't need to have full bolt detail during gameplay, just enough to make the gun look like it's working
Also one tip for a more niche game, start out your game with essentially max gear, then take it away
So, have a sort of demo mission where you're using a 408 Cheytac to demonstrate the mechanics first hand, then slap the player around into having a barrel scraper Kar98 to start off the real progression
You could try doing that by having a supportive "spotter" character that tells you all the details for how to aim at your enemies, then present the player with the option to try on their own
And then correspondingly if the player does well on their own, give an extra reward at the start, like a special Luger that they have at their side
Or another reward that you feel is appropriate, just something that speeds up progression a bit so that more experienced players skip out on the tutorial section, or replaying the game from the start lets you skip a tutorial you've already been through
The game is going to have two modes - realistic and casual, with the latter being closer to any other FPS
The mode will also change the tutorial. Casual will start the player at a computer playing a generic FPS while Realistic will place them at a shooting range with a pistol
The weapons I'm throwing here are just for reference, they are at your own choice after all
The overall function of the weapons will be similar between the two modes, though Casual will include less maintenance and more familiar gameplay
Double-action revolvers, for example, will have the delay when pulling the trigger regardless
For those revolvers, look into how CSGO's R8 works
It'll feel really bad if you left click and it's locked into a small delay before firing
Though double actions usually have a single action mode too
I could make it so that firing a revolver with the hammer already cocked reduces the delay a bit. The cylinder still has to rotate, but the trigger pull isnโt as heavy
And the point with starting the player with the best gear for a mission serves 2 purposes:
-- Hooking on a player with how your mechanics work
-- Having an actual demo for your game that you can demonstrate on video/promotional material/conventions
Dexterity and strength, by the way, will affect how quickly the player can pull the trigger
Itโll mostly be the former though
Now that I think about it, strength will affect how long the actual pull takes while dexterity can determine the time between releasing the trigger and firing the next shot
Double actions still rotate the cylinder when you're manually cocking the hammer, so that's needless by itself
Right, forgot about that part
So pulling the trigger with the hammer already cocked will be almost effortless
Also in 60 fps scenario, players won't notice the animations of the hammer/firing pin dropping
It'll be pretty much snapped from cocked to fired
That's why I'm saying that adding a micro delay will feel bad
For players it'll feel worse than it is
Look for what the player will realistically see instead of what you consider realistic
Not even Arma went into the detail of micro delays from firing pins
Plus, don't add too many stats that the player has to worry about
Simply upgrading their weapon is enough concern for looting hot spots
At most make the stats affect reload/cock/bolt speed, but don't make them affect trigger pulls when they want to fire a bullet
They're already performing the action of pulling the trigger on the controller or clicking a mouse button
And some of the weapons have a trigger pull about as quick as the latter
Including any more delay than the player makes themselves will make them play way too cautiously
Many games are the most fun when the player takes risks
And if your mechanics discourage risks due to going the extra mile for realism, it'll make your game either boring or frustrating, and that's not a spot you want a player to be

all these free games they get are games that atleast mostly, they won't buy on steam

when you gotta either raise your prices to make up for the chunk valve takes, or settle with having less ability to grow a company I don't get how they never caught on but oh well

yep, something along the lines of alienating everyone. Wouldn't really work, I don't remember why I stopped using Skype but I just did.

I stopped using Skype because all my work meetings moved from it to join.me and later zoom due to Skype group calls having massive quality issues with meetings involving more than a few people across the multiple continents :P
I remember join.me, also remembering Skype voice quality being terrible. Although Steam was basically Discord in the old days, you used Steam for text chat and Skype for calls.
Teamspeak/Mumble if you were cool. Thank god Discord ripped of Slack
All I remember from occasionally using IRC was that everyone was idle in the channels I visited.
literally no one spoke, but the channel was full of people.

I would much rather Discord be in the hands of an entity like Valve. I don't really trust the current Discord leadership.
To the point that there were channels like #idlerpg
much better than microsoft
which would play a game of sorts where you'd gain points for idling
neat. Discord ended up being a irc, skype and teamspeak, steam friends all packed into one. Pretty crazy that was only 6 years ago.
yeah I've heard that Microsoft was interested in buying Discord. I'm sure they've learned their lesson with Skype, hopefully they don't mock up discord as they did skype.
there's also matrix/riot or whatever it's called now, a seemingly good decentralized alternative but without the brand recognition of discord.

I think IRC is better due to it being effectively an open alternative where anyone can host their own if they feel like it
It has technical hurdles in being more complicated to use
but I don't think it's something they couldn't solve
I think that matrix/riot actually uses IRC(v?) behind the scenes
and wraps it an a nice looking app

Why don't more people use html/css for game ui? It's a great way to create UI's easily. The engine comes with chromium, shouldn't be too difficult to create something like UWebClientViewport
and just serve local html pages for UI.
don't know about perf, but using minimal js might help

well, not sure what they use for their game hud and such, but the main menu at least used to be a web page - to the point that they had a freaking reload button in the corner because it would stop working so often lol

Styling a UI in HTML is a lot simpler than in UMG, because you can just apply a bunch of CSS and everything looks uniform
The main limitation I can think of is animation, but even that can be easily alleviated by something like GSAP
Otherwise it works pretty much the same way as UMG I think

I haven't tried in C++ but in BP's it's kinda clunky, especially if you want to do "custom controls" eg. say a button with a text label inside it
If you want to expose any custom styling on them you have to expose them as variables which leads to a whole lot of extra code to deal with something like that which would be trivial in CSS

Sure but even my main menu is annoying because it's so freaking fiddly to style everything
It could easily be solved by referencing classes or base classes instead of tags
or allowing you to define a style class name (eg. similar to class="foo" in html)
in very UI-heavy games this is probably a major headache, thankfully I don't have that much UI... yet
it's not something you can't fix but the solutions are also kind of annoying lol
