I had a funny bug hunting experience just now. I have a large procgen HISM that generates the same on the server and all clients, and some code that lets the player destroy an instance of the HISM without loading the network much. When one gets destroyed, a destructable substitute mesh is spawned, fragments and the instance gets scaled to 0 and moved outside the map (because just removing the instance would mess up the indexing of the HISM and the ints packed by the server would remove the wrong instance).
So, i notice that destroying an instance disables hitreg against pawns until the destructable mesh debris get cleaned up. What? So is it the collision on the destructable mesh? no. Does disabling the destructable mesh spawning fix it? no. So, i try disabling the code that modifies HISM instance. Somehow that works. Apparantly i was placing the 0 scaled instance so far outside the map that it was breaking ue's collision system, and then the destructable mesh cleanup would reliably kick ue into fixing it, somehow. Amazing.

Apparently Hitman 3 is doing some stuff to retroactively shrink the first 2 games, Warframe recently went nuts with some better compression too. Least there are companies out there considering it, I mean Epic must have somethin in the works with this RAD purchase
Its a real issue when youre expected to have fast SSDs for loading, every little bit of space counts again, its not like you want to put a 250GB game onto a spinner and NVMe SSDs just arnt cheap enough for everyone to have 4TBs floating around
Titanfall 2 might be bloated with language packs but it also lets you play as the game is downloading, I think we need more of that. For me some games are like a movie, I'll watch it once but wont touch it again for years so whats the point of storing much of it except the most relevant runtime data just like a netflix stream cache
Stupid thing is that UE1 actually had the ability to stream content from servers, lots of games which support mods do yet its never used outside that use case

With cosmetics too you really dont want users to be downloading huge content packs they never interact with, it'd be better to do that on demand. Real issue would be open world games, Tim Sweeney see's things moving in a more MMO direction but Im not sure if thats beneficial from a Single Player standpoint as it could use more bandwith. Playing something like Cyberpunk 2077 youre constantly moving around potentially streaming all that data in/out. So theres no silver bullet, interested to see what UE5 brings on the metaverse side of things
