This ECS experiment is using https://github.com/skypjack/entt/ , a great C++ ECS library.

The battle is 200 vs 200 spaceships, each of them firing several bullets per second. Averages to around 2500 bullets getting updated. Total update time is around 7 miliseconds. Bullets are around 2ms, and spaceships around 5 ms.

On a "release build", this averages to around 3 miliseconds per frame and runs at stable 60 fps on my Ryzen 1700 and GTX970.

The spaceships are "normal" unreal engine Actors, but their logic is on the ECS world. At the start of a frame i copy the transform from unreal Actor into ECS link, perform movement logic, and then merge back into the Actor. This updates physics (the spaceships have collisions) and its the biggest bottleneck of the test.

Hey who here is a tech wizard? I need to improve my connection at home... I have a really small apartment but am dropping / disconnecting constantly. I have at least 3 walls between me and the router, but due to the layout there's not much I can do about the placement of it. My wife is having very little problems on her laptop sat next to me, but I'm having lots of issues. My computer is fairly new and has a PCIe network card with two antenna, but not sure why my connection is so much worse.

I have 4 options I'm considering...
1.) Powerline adapter - sends internet signal through the power using two adapters. Have heard mixed things about this...
2.) Mesh Router setup for better coverage but I understand this is more for big houses or houses with large structures in between (i.e. brick walls).
3.) Hire somebody to run an ethernet socket from the router's room into my office so I can have a hidden wired in connection. This is probably the best option right?
4.) Get an expensive router to see if it helps.

So many ways of attacking this problem I honestly don't know which one to put my money on.

2. better router helps, but signal boosters also do and can be cheaper
3. I always use wired, but then the router is next to me. However I did bracket a wire around my house once

well there were some cuts to get between but yeah it felt natural. Not to mention the gameplay is beyond XCom in so many ways. You feel like this won't be just a staight up aim/shoot/move game. But a real tactical game

Every programmer starts out with 0 experience. It's only by messing around and seeing how things interact with each other that you learn. Often just reading a manual or doing a tutorial teaches you little but keep doing it and those little things add up

treat it like an MMORPG, except your raid party died and theres is only you left to complete the mission

thats semi-serious btw. I treat programming like an MMORPG. Everyone here is my raid party, but I have to level up my own character. Every day, I level up a little more.

you can't fix anything with a defeatist attitude. You can do anything if you have the will to do it and act upon it.

Yup. Dive in, make small goals. Make a door that opens when your character gets close. Get your character to jump. A lightswitch to turn on a light. Piece by piece you'll get a hang of it

It took me close to 2 years of 12 hours a day with UE before I felt even half way competent and another 6 months after that before I could work most of the day without having to look anything up. And that's with having been making games for longer than a few people in this group have even been alive.

Maybe I am biased, but I think it is perfect time for unreal and UT to get proper sequels. The audience is ready - doom eternal took a lot from unreal, and players probably want more of such gameplay

I jumped into game dev in UE3 and was tasked with my worst nightmare. A problem that involved Calculus and Trig to solve. It took me 3 months to solve the problem my slowly teaching myself both Unrealscript and Calculus. Plus it was the first time I had heard of Quaternions so that was interesting. But every long journey starts with small steps.

True story, the first tutorial I ever read for game dev was written by Ambershee. I think he was like 16 when he wrote it. I got to know him somewhat after grazing his tutorials on mod-db and friend requesting him on facebook. Now I think how amazing it was that someone half my age taught me enough to get going.
