That reminds me of some of the old hacker training stuff I used to do back in the early 2000s. You would have to find ways into servers, via terminal access, to run programs so you could progress via the exploits of the services you get to run. It was like a hack-ception. when Steam released in beta it would take up roughly 10% of my CPU just with the launcher active, before a game was even ran. It was truly bad especially when you needed every cycle back then.

I'm always miffed that Unreal Tournament got shelved when they could have evolved it in ways to keep up with the other FPS game modes. Like imagine UT extraction shooters, UT royale, and the modding and mapping scene would have been insane in the UE4/5 eras too. I thought Lyra would have been the foundation of seeing UT4 or UT5 eventually but nothing. It's like Fortnite just killed the aspirations of the game making side of things. Even though they outsourced a lot of it anyway.

Never been one of those people who craps on MS, but the XBGP price increase was disgusting. The OS issues haven't affected me at all though. I'm still one of those that only needs to install fresh once every 10 years or so to clean up.

thats another bitter taste in my mouth. Over 2 decades of being a fanboy for Diablo and the way they have gouged the Diablo fans has been sickening. From Diablo Scammortal through to making a sub-par end game (or rather a dogshit endgame) and then charging people money for an expansion to fix things that didn't fix things. I hear the new expansion gives some replayability but I'm never paying another cent for a Diablo product after that.

yeah I was still abit bitter over D3, I had abit of fun playing it but it was no D2. Its a shame because you can still see some magic there underneath all the AAAness
RPGs on a whole bug me though because of how your game can change with patches, oh OP weapon... yeah we "fixed" that for you, yaaay fun gone

yeah D3 was divisive for sure. Personally I liked the real money auction house even though it was obviously broken in terms of how it affected item availability. I made my money back for what I paid for my copy though. Then when the first expansion hit I felt it got a lot better all around. By the middle of the D3 lifecycle I felt it was in a very good place to have a week or two of fun and put it down again.
At least we got D2:R though. I thoroughly enjoyed replaying through it with decent graphics and some quality of life. The things the new team added, with the charms for negating resistance blockers and the faster levelling from 90-100, was great

I like it myself. Probably because Path of Exile is my all time favourite game. Plus it gives me time to game, then when I'm done I get back to work ๐
I sometimes think I should have been a POE streamer. I've hit 10,000 hours between both games as someone who doesn't stream. Seems like I may have pulled quite a subscriber base by now if my mouth didn't get me in trouble. That always worries me. I have no tolerance for online bullies and you see many of them in the streamer chats.

yeah I can see that. It's got so much content that you can spend the entire 3 or 4 month cycle grinding just to reset and repeat. I find the same with Destiny 2. I love the game, but it's a job.

I installed Warframe the other day for the first time in about 10 years. Faced with what I had to do just to get anywhere near some kind of end game, that felt like too much for a new player. So I lasted about 2 hours of opening boxes with the butt of my sword :/

Something that confuses me is the way Arc Raiders got so successful. Anytime I see people playing it they are simply running around doing nothing but opening boxes, saying "hi raider I'm friendly" so they don't even get the PVP element, then the resets give everyone that FOMO feeling so they can start the next reset with some extra stats. Yet I have never seen any of my mates doing any actual fun gameplay. Shooting a few drones that did nothing didn't appeal to me.
I guess its something zen-like to those folk so I am not criticising their choice, but I cannot understand it from a gameplay perspective.

I'm always surprised when no-talent, asset flip devs make more from some crappy broken early access than I do in a year with some Unreal Engine skills. I guess pride in your work is a negative to making money sometimes.
We had a friend in one of our discord channels who made a game. It was absolute trash. He named his studio GeForce Studios and we kept getting in arguments because I was telling him it was a trademark but he refused to change it. The other night we watched someone review what he released and we were all in stiches. It was so bad it was genuinely funny. But the worst part is, he would then get all elitist and say "how many games have you released?" to people working hard on their games and criticising him. I'd rather not release a game than what he put out.

my current pipeline uses UE simply at the end of the build process, its essentially a pipe for cooking nothing more, everything else is done outside UE ๐

I made a plugin once to allow more control over streaming levels and asynchronously load levels and assets in a way that World Partition did but massively improved on over my iteration which just extended the World Comp system. I didn't mind though, as their implementation was infinitely better.
