well I had a strange run. I grew up with no confidence, my education was broken by bullying. So I went into music. Lived the rock n roll lifestyle for some time before MP3's turned up strong. I knew it was the end of conventional music industry deals so I decided to get out. I bought two books. TCP/IP for Dummies and Visual Basic for Dummies. That started me on the Network Engineering side of things and into ethical hacking.
Eventually lost interest with the server room politics at my workplace so went into web development. Started learning Flash when it arrived and decided to master that.
This lead me into game development eventually as someone asked me to do the UI on a game using Scaleform (which uses Flash SWF files for user interfaces).
In order to get that work I had to learn Unreal Script (with Unreal Engine 3.0).
Then one day my Dad was in hospital going for a triple heart bypass. I went to visit him the night before the op and explained I wanted to be a game dev, always had but never had confidence to try until now. He told me I could do anything I wanted and he believed in me (which was unusual for him). He didn't survive the surgery so 16 years later here I am. Still game devving my ass off. 😄

One bit of advice. Don't water down your learning experience too much. It's easy when you are inquisitive to want to delve into many disciplines, but often syntax and coding best practices are so different it can slow down your development exponentially. If you want to learn Python first but you also want to learn native C and C++, make sure you have that fundamental grasp of Python down first because the shock of moving to a new language can stall some people.

Nothing really surprises me in codebases anymore. I've done some ridiculous stuff myself tbh. I remember making a website injection function so I could pull full dumped webpages with executable PHP from a database and inject them into a web page. But I used the exec() command within the code (so the PHP executes mostly) and it meant a super security hole. I didn't care tho. It was for a company ripping off clients and not paying us on time. I did it to cover myself (I had the replacement code but I never gave it them) and rightfully so. When they patsied me out of the job (blaming me for a client mistake they made before I even joined the company) I walked away knowing they would have to deal with it.
They did. They scrapped the whole website because they didn't have a coder who knew how to fix it 😄 . So revenge was mine muhahahahah
