Or that FEMA has plans for individual use of it to power vehicles and generators in situations where gas stations and power are out? Or it's popularity during WWII's fuel rationing? It's not commonplace except in emergencies because it's horribly inefficient and pretty awful from an emissions standpoint. I'd also like to point you to the mobil process and watet-gas shift reaction that let you convert wood gas into liquid alkenes and alkanes useful for everything from motor oil to gasoline with the right processing. Nothing here is secret, but the energy inputs make it not economically viable in most cases.
Plus, an old, carburetted V8 can be tuned to idle on basically anything flammable. It's a horrible demonstration. What he NEEDS if he wants to be taken seriously is testing for octane, energy density, branching, etc.
