Just seems logical and saves a lot of headache RE-UPDATING new tech later on.

Ah, finally found the hristew's Fab name.

must be Baba Yaga's brother.

#

You know, the hag witch who was killed by the Prince of Shapeir?

mild gust
#

The lady in the chicken house

summer cedar
#

Baba Dokia must have left the family witching business and settled down to selling assets on Fab.

#

Safer profession, I am sure.

mild gust
#

At least in runescape her house is a walking chicken

#

In Russian-Slavic mythology, Baba Yaga was a witch who lived in a house with fowl's feet.

summer cedar

From Quest for Glory.

Look at that art quality from 1990 something.

mild gust

Nice

#

In runescape she's a nice lady that helps us

Well

That wasn't Baba Yaga. It was Baba Dokia.

She's refered to as insane

But still

And they made their game VERY long.

It was fine for old duffers like me.

Yeah

summer cedar

But, everyone else finds it a bit tedious. That they still like the game's story is nice.

summer cedar

๐Ÿค” They should implemented virus/security scanners before allowing a build to go public.

mild gust
#

You'd think they would scan games lol

#

That's kinda alarming ngl

#

To be fair I have a cd of diablo 2 and if I install it today windows defender calls a dll in it a virus iirc.

#

False positive but still

summer cedar
#

When I was told that there's no need to install an anti-virus way back in Windows 10, I was skeptical.

#

But it all worked out. I still keep Spybot S&D though, in case the system needs optimisation or gets a rootkit.

mild gust
#

Only thing I ever sometimes use is malwarebytes also has rootkit scanning

#

And windows defender ofc

summer cedar
#

I remember the days when installing another antivirus was the FIRST thing anyone would do.

#

And if you didn't, bye bye system.

mild gust

#

Turned out some of those AVs were worse than viruses

summer cedar

Hehe. I think India is the only country in the world that is happy with Trump.

#

Which isn't surprising, since Indians are some of the best jury-riggers and foxes in human history. ๐Ÿ˜„

mild gust
#

Modi seemed weird at the office today

#

Mostly because he just didn't say much

summer cedar
#

All we did was take back a few hundred immigrants, most of whom belong in jail or something here, and we are getting sweet offers. ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Best part is, we didn't even go through extradition processes for those people, because Trump just wanted them gone.

mild gust
#

Dang

summer cedar
#

Now, I just read that he offered F-35s to Modi.

mild gust
#

If Trump is serious about denuclearization it will be good for the world.

summer cedar
#

Assuming he can find a power plant.

#

or that he doesn't think nuclear is a different cheeesburger.

mild gust
summer cedar
#

That being said, I doubt India is going to buy the F-35.

#

We are more interested in developing our own tech.

#

The fark do we need stealth fighters for?

mild gust
#

Nothing

#

What you want is the Nighthawk if anything

summer cedar
#

Now, all those sweet GPU techs that we can use to manufacture our own, cheaper GPUs.... that'd be great.

#

The stealth thing is a bit pointless for us, unless we become imperialistic or try to be world police.

#

Knowing us, that won't happen.

#

I'd rather go for a drone and robot army.

#

and laser defences.

mild gust
#

Rail gun

#

Think I saw a report japan was working with US to perfect it

#
EURASIAN TIMES

In October 2023, Japan became the first nation to successfully test-fire a medium-caliber maritime electromagnetic railgun from an offshore platform. Now, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) has begun exploring the possibility of acquiring a new class of destroyers equipped with electromagnetic railguns. The 13DDX Future Destroyer The ...

summer cedar
#

I'll take rail guns, so long as they replace the conventional batteries on battleships and destroyers, both in terms of size and ammo storage.

fluid bloom
#

kinda puny compared to the US prototype that was scrapped

#

5 megajoules

summer cedar
#

Otherwise, land-based platforms are better. Even then, small form factors are preferred.

fluid bloom
#

the US gun was 32 megajoules iirc

mild gust
#

Yeah but wasn't that a pain to repair?

summer cedar
#

Now, railgun on a drone is a whole different ball game.

mild gust
#

a mini railgun

fluid bloom
mild gust
#

Just snipe someone

summer cedar
#

I don't mind spending $200,000 on each drone in that fashion.

fluid bloom
#

the rails themselves deformed and ablated

summer cedar
#

Better than sniping, they'd be great to bunker bust.

mild gust
#

True

#

But you could use it for assassinations

summer cedar
#

Aye, but we are not in that business.

mild gust
#

Take out key targets

summer cedar
#

Or, if we are, we just use pistols or knives.

mild gust
#

Everyone has some form of assassin

summer cedar
#

Easier to get rid of, I imagine.

mild gust
#

Just might not be as public

summer cedar
#

Because we somehow managed to evade all of them and kill extremists on their soil(s).

mild gust
#

Well yeah

summer cedar
#

๐Ÿคฃ

#

Of course, turns out the Canadian report was false.

#

But, you get my point.

mild gust
#

Most of it gets blamed on Sikhs no?

summer cedar
#

The actual assassins were other suspected Indians.

#

But the targets were Khalistanis, yes.

#

There were quite a few of those in the immigrants Trump returned to us. ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Which saved us SO MUCH money and time. ๐Ÿ˜„

mild gust
#

Haha

#

Now they can go to jail or what

summer cedar
#

pretty much

#

the seriously guilty ones will be quietly disposed of, I imagine.

mild gust
#

So is the Sikh people part of a separatist movement?

summer cedar
#

like, the ones with military-focused crimes.

#

Nah.

mild gust
#

So that was fake news

summer cedar
#

Punjabis are happy to be Indian.

#

Those 'Sikhs' are basically Khalistanis.

mild gust
#

I imagine there's a small part

summer cedar
#

Yes, they dress like Sikhs.

mild gust
#

Ah

summer cedar
#

But, the actual Sikh community is quite patriotic and Indian.

#

Why wouldn't they be? They're prosperous here. ๐Ÿ˜„

mild gust
#

Fair

#

They do seem to be quite nice people

#

Have a few friends

summer cedar

But, the Khalistanis are an old story, from the times of Indira Gandhi, the female PM of India.

summer cedar
#

The keys to it look fatter than my current house keys.

mild gust
#

๐Ÿ˜ฎ

bowley has deadbolts also that havn't been picked yet.

#

Apparently

summer cedar
#

No one's going to be picking this one either.

#

I just have to make sure my old mum doesn't get locked out by mistake.

mild gust
#

Not even with a tickler?

summer cedar
#

Doubt it. Even if they do pick it, there's another two locks behind this. ๐Ÿ˜„

#

And a deadbolt there.

#

Wait.... two deadbolts.

mild gust

Just keep them caffeinated

#

Get those shaky hands

summer cedar
#

No, no. They will work swiftly and get out even quicker.

#

He also has to install the second device that automatically closes the door.

#

Which has me worried that my mum will get locked out.

#

That's not the real problem. The real problem is, I'll have to get up early in the morning to let her back in.

#

It's a sacrifice that I am not quite ready to make yet.

#

If she can just stay outside till I eventually rise like a phoenix, that'd be dandy.

mild gust
#

Just give her like a garage door button that opens the doors

summer cedar
#

But, it'd draw the evil eye of the neighbours and society at large.

#

She'll lose the button in no time.

#

Heck, I am fairly sure she's lost her set of house keys.

#

God knows where.

mild gust
#

Rip

summer cedar
#

I wish we could all trust each other enough to leave our doors open.

mild gust
#

Has that time come and gone already

summer cedar
#

She won't be able to enter the combination.

mild gust
#

Biometric

summer cedar
#

That might work, except a wandering monkey might destroy the thumb panel.

mild gust
#

Plastic cover?

#

Lol

summer cedar
#

They remove the covers.

mild gust
#

I mean fair

summer cedar
#

Our monkeys have learned to pretend like humans.

mild gust
#

It's still a step to stop them

summer cedar
#

They open taps, drink water, close them, etc.

mild gust
#

What about

#

Nvm

summer cedar
#

Open windows, get in, open your fridge, take snacks, and walk out.

mild gust
#

I was going to say lock the plastic cover

#

Then defeats the purpose

summer cedar
#

The most straightforward solution would be to hire a doorman.

#

But, I am sure mum will forget who the doorman is and call me in the morning, freaking out.

#

๐Ÿ˜„

mild gust
#

Stranger danger!

summer cedar
#

Who was it who said that?

Motion detector

summer cedar
#

So, 5142 will be entered as 5555.

mild gust
#

That only opens when it scans certain people

summer cedar
#

That'd work, except if the motion detector malfunctions because of power cuts and fluctuations.

#

Then, it might smash her.

mild gust
#

Ups

summer cedar
#

Given her bones are weak, bad idea.

#

Well.............. no, let's not go there.

mild gust
#

Always have a power backup

summer cedar
#

Oh yeah, I have 12 hours backup now, computer included.

#

I had to buy the new batteries and unit much earlier than anticipated.

#

The transformer behind my building exploded TWICE.

mild gust
#

Damn

summer cedar
#

Tripped a fuse in my house and apparently damaged the 10-year-old inverter unit.

mild gust
#

Fried it?

summer cedar
#

Everything seemed fine.

#

EXCEPT, next time, the adapter powering my modem failed.

#

That caused a short circuit that was shielded by my excellent extension cords.

#

However, it sent the inverter unit to the dogs.

mild gust
#

Standard voltage is 230v in india?

summer cedar
#

SO, I spent roughly $400 or a bit more earlier than I thought I would.

summer cedar
#

And prior to this, my house stabilizer, also 10 years old, lost its brains.

#

Too much carbon, too much stabilization, too much donkey work.

#

SO.... replaced EVERYTHING.

#

Thankfully, we have cheaper made-in-India alternatives to imports.

#

SO, I got everything for $600.

mild gust
#

Shit yeah, should last another 10 years then eh

summer cedar
#

pretty much

#

Of course, the old inverter was abused by yours truly.

#

No way a 600W inverter could handle 1.2-1.3KW. ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Of course, I didn't think of all this when I bought my new PC. ๐Ÿ˜„

mild gust
#

What no way

#

lel

summer cedar
#

To be fair, that didn't push it over the edge. All the fluctuations and explosions outside did.

mild gust
#

If I learnt anything from ElectroBOOM electricity can be a fickle dog.

summer cedar
#

heck yeah.

mild gust
summer cedar
#

Well, can't say computer nerds aren't getting valuable electric education from NVidia these days.

#

Also, the occasional fire fighting experience.

mild gust
#

Going to need it haha

#

I been tempted to buy a fire extinguisher

summer cedar
#

Hehe.

mild gust
#

Had a psu catch fire as a kid

summer cedar
#

I think it'd be hard to start a fire with computer components these days, though.

#

Aren't they built to be self-contained, even in the case of short circuits and stuff?

mild gust
#

Now yeah

#

Would be surprised if anything really went haywire

#

Can even shock your parts

#

and for the most part it will be fine

#

Just obviously avoid if possible lol

#

But magnets are still bad iirc

summer cedar
#

Even a cheap Chinese stabilizer is pretty stable, these days.

mild gust
#

Can wipe hard drives w/ them

summer cedar
#

I had a 11-year old AC stabilizer short circuit for 4 seconds.

#

There were sparks and stuff, but then nothing.

#

...when you grab all the fish with your magnet.

mild gust

#

Should you be able to rotate the camera in a top down game? Build levels with a fixed viewpoint or build them all round? Thoughts guys

cursive crypt
#

I have seen both, it looks cheaper to have fixed pov tho.

#

By cheaper, I mean effort spent on the game.

#

Many games are like that and are good games.

unborn lotus
#

im just not sure what is easier to do

#

I guess being able to rotate is easier, don't have to think too much on what is blocking the view or assets without faces, just everything standard and let the player handle it

cursive crypt
#

If you have a fixed point you have to playtest it, is fine. This works well for more top-down angles. The best is, you care much less about your assets. You can save on rendering.

#

I mean, check some games in similar genre as yours?

unborn lotus
#

I guess it also encourages more exploration - look for stuff you might not see...but might be too much work for the players...ugh

cursive crypt
#

Even Divinity Original Sin, at the beginning, had fixed angle.

unborn lotus
cursive crypt
#

That one up can work if you put an effort on camera obstruction, which you may need to do anyway.

#

At the end, I think you can try the easiest route.

#

See how it goes. At that example up, it makes sense to rotate because the angle is lower, to the ground.

#

See Shadowrun e.g. fixed.

#

Totally fine.

#

The level design is clever, not to obstruct the area. You may ofc, include some hidden content this way too ๐Ÿ™‚

unborn lotus
#

thx

#

i have to look up some gameplay vids of these

cursive crypt
#

It is all 2d assets too, which is easier in some sense.

#

Yep, so, I think, go the easiest for you, make it feel right for the game you do.

#

... which is totally useless advise, ofc that's the goal for everyone, lol

unborn lotus
#

problem is it's easier to rotate the camera, but my testers (aka wife and son) just don't want to rotate it at all lol

#

guess I have to do events where it rotates by itself to show it's possible like some games do

cursive crypt
#

You have a nice family ๐Ÿ™‚
Think whether you can't show a tutorial and require them to rotate the camera, say rotate to get an item barely showing behind a column.

fathom wadi
#

Nothing frustrates me more than an RPG in isometric view where you cannot rotate it. However it depends on the game type. If it's an ARPG then I can live with it because the general idea is to blitz through with a power fantasy and clear areas quick, ready to re-farm. But if it's a narrative RPG (like Neverwinter Nights 2) then I feel rotation is a must. I explore every nook and cranny in those games and if I am obscured by fixed camera I feel like I'm not looking for anything as it will inevitably be pointed out for me.

cursive crypt

Yeah. Although I wanted to like Pillars, I found it tedious. But recently played Rogue Trader and that was utterly absorbing.

fathom wadi
# steady stone classic fallouts and ultima games couldn't be rotated.

Fallout was what I would call RPG-Lite and was pre-rendered so it had it's guiding methods to let you find things so although FO2 was a banger of a game, it wasn't as exploratory in it's nature as you were presented with small areas and spent time waving the mouse around looking for an outline from an awkward perspective that cut off half of the near-side of the playfield entirely.
BG1 and 2 did the same thing.
This is why Neverwinter Nights broke the mould in that sense. But it was also because the hardware tech allowed for better graphics to make that worthwhile.
Never played Ultima myself though but it looks limited by it's time too.
Now I'm not saying these games weren't good. FO2 was my favourite game of all time until Path of Exile. It just irks me since NWN2 and beyond. Before that, I didn't even much like RPGs at all. ๐Ÿ™‚

steady stone

thank you, I'm glad people like it, but I am obliged to say it's mostly just a wrapper on top of the harmonix stuff epic added in 5.4, like, I wouldn't have been able to make all those midistream types myself, not smart enough to do that.

#

I actually started this whole thing trying to make a music sheet renderer using SMUFL fonts, figured it'd be easier to make a piano roll using slate, and then I learned about the harmonix plugin and the metasound builder subsystem and just connected a few dots. Music XML would actually be very cool to support one day.

fathom wadi
#

Have you considered going for one of the audio programmer jobs at Epic? I saw some jobs not too long ago which made me think they are trying to get more DAW elements built in, perhaps full VST support even, who knows. But with your base knowledge and obvious intention to drive some new functionality, even if you don't think you are smart enough I think there is a place for you there. They have onboarding and the closed information sources and colleagues in the same department means you might find strength in numbers and made some really cool stuff. Just a thought.

steady stone

But if you don't like the style of the game, or the characters, or the gameplay, then it's simply not for you. But to deny it's greatness is a bit fruitless in the face of the general consensus.

its not that its bad, but "masterpiece" tends to be something thats thrown around too often for marketing and reviews
