I'm guessing the tesselation he wants is the one that is generated at runtime via the gfx card, to add more polys. Bump maps dont add polygons. And nanite meshes with more polys have a bigger disk size. AFAIK

I've been working on one of my dream projects for almost 14 years. It's gone through several iterations. I recently started up on it again. I've burned out on it several times, I've sidelined it for making money instead. But I always come back. If you feel burned out definitely take some time off, but take my advice. Put at least 30 minutes into it every day. Even if it's just writing up the project management or resolving ideas you don't like anymore. Just do a little bit.

i've been going through the diablo 4 overworld and it's crazy how detailed the ground is. i realize that it is basically a billion dollar budget but even when i see games like path of exile i'm really confused as to where to even start. when i look at the levels, they really look extremely flat with little in the way of meshes to distinguish the level and it's much more about the texturing work that they do
and that's where i get confused. i don't know how to even start to think about that workflow
please keep in mind i'm a complete artist noob (mostly just a developer but i can't find artists) so i'm gonna take a stab at all parts of the pipeline for my project
maybe i should take a closer look at these references as it's probably naivete but just trying to understand how a level designer thinks about top down environments

well you can think in modular kits for starters, create a couple of grid-aligned segments for walls and corners and try to assemble something
then another kit for props to populate the levels with extra details

long version: i'm probably going to sound stupid but i need help and i dont know where to go.
i was building a game and i was super proud of my progress over six months but my biggest constraint always was the animations. i could make everything placeholder (like spells, environments, etc) but the one thing that always needed to be there were the animations. unfortunately, the studio that i wsas working with for animations got too expensive for my budget and they were slow. and i didnt want to continue cycling htrough contractors for animations because many of them were truly terrible. additioanlly the unreal marketplace animations were always super hit or miss, even when they used the standard humanoid rig in UE4/5.
i'd like to just build the animations on my own. i started looking into cascadeur and maya but honestly got extremely overwhelmed. i started a course in an online animating "university" or whatever but they forced me through this program where i'd need to learn the tools first (like blender and maya), and it did help me understand how to model a fucking guitar but we didn't touch animation at all. i easily dropped $3k just to learn how to use these tools.
i want to just learn very basic animation. i know the workflow (pose, interpolate, refine) and at this point just need to know the theory and foundational stuff

Sadly no, I think animating humans is way way over my skills, so best to outsource it. At most I stick to simple mechanical animations like sci fi doors and stuff like that. In my personal projects I don't even use humans, too complicated and I know I will never ever finish a project with them in it ๐

Yeah but I don't think it's worth it to try to develop yet another skill that you can only do to a mediocre level. Stick to what you do best, if it's programming, or the level design or the art and try to get someone very good at it to do the rest...else it might just be a huge waste of time

Animation is tricky, even once you have the animations theres heaps of grunt work in hooking em all, doing blending etc. Control rig helps but not much tbh
Managing packs from the MP as Ive said before its annoying they all use their own version of default skeletons so even in just prepping packs to use em together theres alot of time. Epic need to do something about it

Well it's the weekend so I'm just chilling. I have a dilemma with Metahumans crashing my project in standalone though which is going to force me to not use them in my project. Unless I want to do all my animations custom for metahuman without retargetting on the SKM_Quinn mesh. So I'm sad about that because it means I will be doing animations for weeks.
I don't think it will. It's not a bug, rather a feature of how async and gamethread work. I'm not even sure why their official tutorial states to do it that way when it doesn't work in standalone
this is the error. I've tried both live retargetting and Retarget Mesh From Pose and both give the same error. Odd thing is the mesh works, and the IK works. But after a few seconds (random) it will just crash
