So, I had this problem, I had to make a new project twice because one I had a broken cursor on the land when I did some foliage painting, and now I'm working on a fresh project and got my cursor back.
I found out it crashes because of the landscape material, and nanite foliage, it wouldn't let me edit the landscape when I had the foliage down so in the outliner you will see the foliage instance, you have to hide it to work with your landscape, I did have mine randomly crash being idle while working in 3DSmax
