So what are you going to do, constrain the game within certain bounds?
That's prob the simplest way to do it
but it would also be cool to see some sort of system where you can travel infinitely, and the game could continue across an infinite expanse
theoretically, you could save it all in some sort of binary file for memory, each cell could be 0 or 1 occupied or not
I'd imagine storing all that info in the game files would get pretty performance heavy as you travel further away
it'd probably be more efficient to save just coordinates of occupied cells
Probably
minecraft chunks, yep
even the most seemingly infinite games have a limit, minecraft is a great example
I think it's smth like 30 million meters away for that
Theoretically tho, with how little this game concept would store it would take years to ever get far enough away to break it
Maybe years is a bit of an exaggeration but you'd have to be crazy to do it
Also I'm wondering how hard the game will be, like a simple puzzle game, or like 2048
Because the larger the simulation would get, the harder to end
Maybe some sort of limiting factor would be needed to prevent it getting so far out of hand that there's nothing the player can do about it
and if you make it more than just a kill cells game but have actual npcs doing stuff and moving and reacting to your environmental changes...
maybe this isn't as simple a concept as first thought...
game of life is, but emergent properties and adding another layer to it could be fun...
I wanna see someone put iron sights in their fps game but it's literally just a block of iron attached to a rifle with goggly eyes glued too it and if you zoom to look into it you cannot see a thing as the iron ingot obscures your vision
Man I haven't done ironing in so many years.
Don't forget starching
you put starch on clothes?
It keeps them ironed for longer.
this stuff dates back to before synthetic fibers
I think that's not a coincidence
never heard of that lol
having a black spot on ur shirt in the shape of an iron is a fashion statement π
watch out or Kanye will steam your idea
Kanye?
West
I suppose there aren't too many kanyes floating around.
in fact there might be none, since he legally changed his name to Ye, or so I heard
crap, now they have to name their kids Ye to keep up with the joneses wests.
just like piffy puf. or paffy P. or diidy puf , or was it puddy G
P diddy
piddy C
pseudonyms and stage names can change on a whim. legal names are when you absolutely positively have to make someone do grueling paperwork.
he doesn't have a last name anymore either
it's just Ye
that's his full name
Missed opportunity have the last name "Et"
Ye Sus
Now that's just crazy talk.

welp, now I need to double check this with Tim Sweeny Bot
It's a good move honestly I think the unreal community would merge wonderfully with the quroa community
obligatory /s for shitpost π€ͺ
please tell me this is a joke
Quora is like Reddit, if every comment was maximising for SEO for some fucking reason.
You know those recipes, that start with 10 paragraphs of life stories, details about their family you don't care about, and 4 rehashings of how much their family loves their meal - all before actually getting to the 2 paragraphs the recipe takes? Yeah every second Quora comment is that, for whatever reason.
In other words, I'm keen for the transition to Quora. I can finally practice my blogspam skills
[AI] π€
Quora Digest emails are good
At least for me they often contain all kinds of interesting Q/As
but I don't use it beyond just reading those on occasion
no their always about us politics democrats v Republicans for me
I think it optimizes based on what you click same as everything does nowadays
which Is funny bc I don't even remember making an account
Step 1: don't be American
Step 2: (maybe be Indian to really belong)
No doubt there's some interesting content, but it just hijacks online searches for me, and whereas a Reddit thread would be straight to the point, Quora is full of pretentions rambling that often ends up being wrong anyway. WHY
Never seen quora pop up on searches for me
Or actually yes I have, but very rarely, and on searches that weren't giving me any useful results to begin with :P
Addendum to the above:
Step 3: don't be π¦ either
I had a funny one in today's Quora Digest asking something like "Has there ever been a bigger martial arts poser than Steven Seagal" lol
The answer began with an anecdore about how Chuck Norris was a pretty humble guy and ended with "no there has been no poser bigger than Seagal" lol
Chuck Norris, m8. Haven't heard the name in like 15 years lol
yeah he had his moment of fame which ended sometime in the 2000s I guess except with action movie aficionados
watched Invasion USA recently which was pretty decent
BTW Unreal Fest soon right? Do they do any announcements at them typically?
Chuck Norris facts are satirical factoids about American martial artist and actor Chuck Norris that have become an Internet phenomenon widespread in popular culture. These 'facts' are absurd hyperbolic claims about Norris's toughness, attitude, sophistication, and masculinity.
Chuck Norris facts have spread internationally, making translations a...
I remember this was a pretty big fad at one point lol
Yeah the memes are all I remember, it was around the derpina and rage face times. Simple, innocent times
lol there were Chuck Norris games, and this one went out in style
https://twitter.com/NonstopChuck/status/1278977088268140545
All in-app purchases will be disabled on July 3rd, 2020 and all players will receive 69000 Gems that they can consume on items purchasable with Gems from the in-game Shop to enjoy the remaining days of Nonstop Chuck Norris.
lol
I vaguely recall some of them were actually fairly well received
Never played them myself though
This is a joke since this would have happened last month, and also it's from a beta.character.ai AI chatbot
I want a manny command where /s will mark a message as a shitpost lol
maybe you just need to start marking them with π©
I mean there is literally an AI tag on the image though
well yeah but it said "start". I guess I really am just that gullible
hugging me gives you goodluck
?
Well, I really did search it to see if it was something previously considered, or somehow using quora as a backend. I was trying to figure out a date estimate of the most up to date training data, by asking about the forums being renamed to epic dev community
When you ask certain questions that don't have a definitive repeated answer online it generates random responses, like swiping to re roll the response says that it's being replaced by the unreal slackers discord, and then the unreal "slayers" discord (watch out pfist)
I knew it. I say the ping and knew this question was coming
I want to but I keep ending up wanting to do other stuff ;-; like playing destiny 2 again and sinking 150 hours into it in a month

Some old friends I use to play it with started playing it again so I reinstalled it
But now I'm bored of it again so I haven't touched it in over a week xD
It was fun for a bit but on top of getting bored of it, I strongly dislike a lot of choices Bungie has made with it. Such as removing a shit ton of content, including DLC I paid for. Just gone. Poof.
it was difficult to realize whole 3 season was just a slice of life
still living the trauma

ICYMI: Activision Blizzard has received another sexual harassment lawsuit that alleges sexual battery, failure to prevent harassment, gender discrimination, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. https://t.co/i2v73DmAN9

two times in a row this week

wtf is wrong with this company
christ
that was not in response to "wtf is wrong with this company" it was in response to it being the second time this week
Mr. Vega was terminated within 10 days
tbh 10 days is a long long time for something like this
I found another article that explains what happened in detail and its so disturbing to read
Their "relationship" ended in 2011, and he kept going on with this stuff until 2020? jesus
how is a battery related
because that man is getting hella charged
700 reported incidents occurring under CEO Robert Kotick's watch
how many employees do they even have
jesus fucking christ.
a lot
its a collection of multiple AAA studios
Activision Blizzard itself has 2,127 alone according to LinkedIn
There are 3 different studios for CoD and a few other small ones helping the 3
playing their games would bring up some sad memories now i guess
Does this include studios they publish for?
I'm not sure about that
Because I think it'd be a bit misleading if it did
well 2k to 700 is a.... horrible rate
||https://www.pcgamer.com/activision-blizzard-is-facing-another-sexual-harassment-lawsuit/||
very disturbing to read
That is beyond repulsive
he regularly "belittled and insulted" the plantiff during meetings, describing her as "
||a scrub||" whose "opinions don't matter," and that she was failing to perform "a job a monkey could do."
tbh at this point whole studio is guilty
if this lasted that long someone should have take a step
That's wild that shit flew during meetings
Is there a reason you censored ||a scrub||? Is there alternative meaning to that word I don't know?
a scrub is just as bad as many curses in other cultures
I dont know its original meaning, but I thought it has the most possiblity of triggering automod π
I always used it similarly to like, punk or noob lol
interesting
it must be quite extreme if there's a lawsuit now
after reading that article i kinda understand why people say to not mix work life with personal
Ngmi
you can file a lawsuit for anything tho
the article states she said she was underpaid.... that means her skills could get a better paid job elsewhere?
like ppl are willing to take a paycut if the job makes em happy
shit job and shit pay... ppl tend too leave
just come to work on time and pepperspray the guy if he acts out of line
Lawsuit is based on it being enabled/encouraged by the workplace culture
the dailymail article that the ign article references is much more thorough
well im not up too speed on the case.. dont really follow drame like this
but you never have any compromising data you cant have in the open on digital medium and you never send it out
and some guys just need pepperspray to the face.. if you dont do it some1 else might get hurt
I'd have to imagine that's a sure way for HR to give you the boot, probably ineffective at reforming a miscreant, and also difficult to do over text/email.
well if HR gives u the boot you can still go lawsuit... at least u peppersprayed him
hell at one point my boss made an improper joke about my sister... i told him he better now do it again or he would get seriously hurt
also i trashed a bunch of stuff
at that point he knew he was outta line
he said sorry and ordered a new pc monitor
i am obsessed with wheelhandles
it's hard to understand how people can be so evil
then I watched Dexter
I would say most the people in acti are like Dexter
ehm dexter wasnt actually the bad guy till he killed the cop π
dexter progressed out of control, at first it was justified then he went out of control
look man... things happen... situations are arranged... actions spiral past goals...
but you know what the more I think about it the more I think your right thats actually a really bad comparison I made hahaha
also he was broken.. stone cold psycho π
I do NOT mean it at all like that, I think that more these people function on normal levels and have some extreme calculated evil need to do that stuff and hide it, and thrives under operating under suspicions
They're more like drug addicts, but they're high on their own ability to get what they want.
he was made into one... the trophy blood drops really are what put it past protecting the good
thats what I loved about the show it was a really tough debate lol
Good results and removing problems, good! Trophies and ritual, bad!
hrm...
super mario and falling down are basically the same in a lot of ways
super mario jumps on turtles... thats 100% evil
like a lot of em are protected spiecies
interesting
like wheelchair handles?
whats a wheelhandle
both start with what is in their minds a perfectly benign and reasonable task
both work through challenges with ever-increasing levels of violence to complete their task which is to get to an innocent person they love who's being protected by someone else
both have two primary parties acting to stop them
only difference is mario never realizes he's the bad guy going against a changing social norm
this might explain why falling down is my favorite: I played a lot of super mario on NES
Falling down?
Iron Maiden made a good song about it.
well thats why i boke the pc monitor when i felt it was the right thing to do... if i didnt he might have done the same next day... for many days
also i told him i would quit if he couldnt stop talkin crap.. that wasnt much of an option for him at the time
Turtle soup is just so delicious.
mumbles something about tortoises
never had turtle soup myself π
mario's turtles can't swim and die in water, they're not turtles
That's why the galapagos turtles became endangered.
turtles often drown π¦
They kept trying to bring them back to catalogue them, but they were so delicious, none of them ever survived the trip home on teh boat.
i am trying to make one in ue5 :3
got a system down already
just not for the wheelhandle
kinda tricky
some turtle eggs hatch at full moon.. soo lil turtles head too the light where the ocean is but if there is a town next too the beach with many lights they head there and die
i see it on tv, it was super sad π¦
better than choking on a pelican's stomach acid
make one do what?
also to model one you should use blender or an actual modeling tool
ue5 has model making functionality, but its not ideal when compared to actual modeling programs
well if somebody illegally bread and raised endangered snapping turtle species to be bloodthirsty for humans and hunt them down, would the government not step in and hunt down those turtles?
that was the plot for the canceled second super mario movie with bob hoskins
that sounds like the plot for TMNT
maybe someone failed to sell their script to the TMNT franchise and reworked it for Super Mario without realizing they should trash it (or make a B horror movie)
the article keeps saying how plaintiff got the job with his assistance even after the harrasment, so it seems like she had plenty reason to not do anything against him for the job, as seen by the lawsuit coming after the guy got removed from post
fun fact about sea turtles, the temperature of the sand their born in determines their sex
thats why some times in the year, theres a higher chance male turtles are born, and other times theres a higher chance for females.
So climate change is gonna get rid of a gender of turtles?
quite possibly
and in turn, sea turtles would go extinct
but when global temperatures get that high, were kind of fucked anyways
why am i never actually on when the vc is active
does anyone else need to constantly right click volume > sounds to get windows to register all audio inputs? it's done this for 2 different brand motherboards now, for as long as I can remember
USB audio receivers are always detected, but if I use my monitors speakers, monitor sleeps, I have to hit Sounds again. Same for detecting VR audio input oculus and steamvr
ever since I was but a wee amoeba..
yo @primal summit wasnt able to do much today but i got this
only had 30 minutes but made a system that generates tiles based on a size x and size y variable, though that will have to change. also added some basic movement.
Godot has an actual Conway's Game of Life template someone uploaded
it does a couple strange things though
earlier I was thinking of what I should do for infinite bounds, but then checked out this google page: https://www.google.com/search?q=conway's+game+of+life&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS954US954&oq=conways+&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i10i512l9.6488j0j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
left is right, so then I thought, what if I make it a sphere?
idk if that would work
Left is right, up is down is a simple toroidal wrapping, and pretty ideal for rectangular things
yeah, but I was thinking smth like this would be cooler
imagine cgol on that
seems like itd be pretty complicated to make tho
Tricky part is the rules require each square to have 8 neighbors. I'm not sure it qualifies as "cgol" if you have to compromise on that in order to tile squares imperfectly around a sphere
i mean the same rules base can apply, itd just be 5 instead of 8
also i cant think of a way to do torodial wrapping and still make it look cool.
i dont know how I would do it too, teleport the player when theyre at the edge? cant think of a way to do that seemlessly
maybe i could have a preview of whats going on on the other side of the board outside of the bounds, and when the player hits the bounds they wont even notice
If you're spawning the representative grid on the fly, it shouldn't be an issue.
e.g. the representative grid is what you see, and is in global coords, while the actual data for the grid is in bounded coords (if x > width, x - width)
if it's JUST game of life, in 2D, then you could just have a fixed camera and move a board under it, wrapping new pieces from edge to edge, and just highlight what the player can click on in another color with a tint?
Keep adding polys, little buddy! You got this!
more of a point cloud, but...
Finally some good news in #lounge
Is that a hidden ad?
I'm disappointed it isn't "Garlic Phone"
that's what me and my friends call it all the time
They grow up so fast
I think I still have one of these lying around.
police visit was cool alright
what
yeah just get the fingerprints for passports and id card
went too early there and helped some to direct right service room
You're in the system now, man. They've got you!
now i can get verified soon
So any news on what's going on with the GTA6 link
what link
leak* my bad
I have a slight cybersecurity interest so I'm always curious to hear about how people actually gained access.
I used to be an advocate for the "don't click on links" thing but that's kind of unrealistic (see what i did there) because you can't expect everyone to know how to actually check the domain of who sent the email.
or how to use dig to see if that domain even resolves back to the IP it should.
Clicking a link itself doesn't cause much harm in modern browsers right? It's when you start interacting with the website like downloading things and giving it permissions when things start getting sketchy
ehh it kinda depends on the goal of the attacker.
well clicking a link could give some information already
but for the most part, no it doesn't.
I'm sure I remember that back in the day some mobile phones would put their phone numbers in http headers. Or something really retarded.
Bingo, if I wanted to just get some info and was doing recon clicking the link is all I need you to do, if you press the "allow microphone" use that's even better.
fucking what
telecommunications is a funny thing.
Assuming you aren't on wifi though, now they just use the service provider as a domain.
What info would you get without permissions? Assuming you don't have cross-site attribution like Google Analytics or something
Your headers, user agent things like that. So for instance there's a console that uses some windows service to log you into it's online services, but it only accepts requests from a particular user-agent. Once I figured out that user agent I was able to send requests to basically try and brute force credentials for an account.
for one, the fact that you clicked the link is already info that you're a potential targetg
I meant for a phishing link, but reverse engineering network traffic, yeah. IDK how modern SSL affects it, but you could run the device through a MITM proxy as well
A lot of times they cast a wide net and see what they can catch. It's more so about getting access at first, then you can do lateral movement and privileges escalation from that point.
Apparently telecommunications companies using transparent proxies were adding account/phone data to outgoing requests.
Including things like IMEI number.
you could but you don't even need to most of the time, and SSL just means the information is encrypted over the wire, you can circumvent that by just being the endpoint.
Yeah doesn't surprise me, my TelCo had a sandbox for an API to query test customer data. Except it was hooked up to prod data, sans-rate limiting and sane things like that of course...
Lol
But if you think that's bad, the programs and webservices that run most of your power and gas systems have users/passwords like "operator:operator"
It's cheaper that way.
How would you "be the endpoint" without redirecting the DNS records to yourself, and grabbing the private key of the routing server?
Nuclear launch codes were, at one point, "00000000"
80% of web traffic is bots pinging for PHP index pages I swear lol. PHP is the pen-testers' gold mine
Also ^^^ I'm assuming moderate competence in terms of security set up, but if we're dealing with dummies then all bets are off ha
I remember the day, ages ago, I was talking to the webdev of the company I worked for. He showed me some code. He put unchecked/raw get/post strings into mysql requests.
I cried a little inside and taught him about security.
I worked with a full-stack guy that (proudly) built a backend endpoint to GET raw SQL queries to, and it just ran them naively. I deleted the PR the moment I saw it lol, had to have a long conversation about security
Even over SSL, GET URLs get exposed. Literally the worst way to do it, I was impressed
You set up your own domain, y0urbank.com vs yourbank.com. I have my own SSL cert set up (if i want to make it look more legitimate) or I can force you to port 80 (http). You sign in and I store that info on the server you landed on and exfil it somewhere else whenever (now SSL doesn't matter).
Wow.
This is why I never click links in emails I think are even potentially harmful.
I hate to say it but most of the time when it comes to people doing security, it's a matter of filling chairs rather than knowing how to keep people safe because most companies are just gonna pay a ransom or use their DRP and it's business as usual.
If my bank emails me a link, I type in the bank's url and log in to my account to check stuff.
I never click the provided link.
As you should.
TBF getting certs is easy as fuck. In corpo settings I'm going to have auto-fills for auto-generated passwords, and if that's not showing up, alarm bells are ringing
Most scam emails I've gotten have been like "hey it's me ur CEO, I need help settling funds for a business deal, thanks bud"
I thought they were all, "You've received a prize for working so hard" or something.
But you also have browser attacks people can do to steal those as well. Thus don't click on links
Actually, more realistically, it's all going to be logging in based off Google/ Azure/ AWS accounts.
Fucking AWS and their daily SSO shit.
Once AWS started asking for a credit card to use a free service i had to stop using them.
Lol. Indeed.
but the time when people weren't setting up proper security on S3 buckets was an amazing time.
You know who else does that? Scam websites. "We just need to verify your cc info... just in case."
^^^ bingo
So do most sub though, like Netflix, Spotify, etc (for free trials)
The hope is you tick over and keep paying
That is true.
I assume the free AWS thing was always free, though?
Hasn't used AWS
"How did they manage to get access to our databases????"
Has S3 bucket with a csv full of usernames and passwords for every user with open privileges
With AWS the hope is you forget to clean up 400 things littered around their word-maze of a website, and keep getting billed for it
Lol
IT was indeed free at one point, and they never asked you for a card number, this was maybe 4 years ago. I used to use it to set up vulnerable machines and practice penetrating them instead going through the trouble of setting up my own machine at my home.
If you feel like this may be the last time you're on a boat, then that's the picture to click.
Squalls?
i kind of want to watch unrealfest now... Why is it not live on twitch?
I had real trouble with the one that asked you to pick rivers. "They could all be rivers, damn it! Mabye some are roads..."
Tune into the Unreal Fest 2022 Livestream coming direct to you from New Orleans!
Catch presentations from top games studios like Crystal Dynamics, Iron Galaxy Studios, and The Coalition, as well as Epic-hosted sessions that dive into everything from building Open Worlds to using the latest UE5 features.
Canβt make the Livestream? Stay tuned o...
Then realised it said "vertical rivers."
@fleet tangle is your pfp supposed to be vivi or the mage from ff1. I'm leaning towards ff1
no twitch, thats weird. lol
It's from nuklear power, actually. I believe it's based off FF, though.
why are they going over the basics >_>
I had to google what that was.
The project I'm working on is tomorrow!
Oh shit, good stuff man!
The meme talk is going to be the CHORVS one, about optimizing for platforms
It's literally the only game on my Xbox Series X that runs out of VRAM and crashes lol
Lol
It's on the media & entertainment channel.
One daekesh will come back as a multimillionaire game dev and tell us to git rekt
The Future of Broadcast Design and Animation

Pennsylvania? π€
Will I now?
Don't make games. Maybe one day.
one day soon
Don't even know about power mechanics. That should be Your Highness.
The best business analyst I've worked with got hired by EA. I want to ask her how the move to the games industry is going, kinda want to do the same but scary :))))
I could have jumped ship recently. I decided not to.
Is there a way to see the other keynotes from Unreal fest, or only those streamed to youtube?
Any particular reservations?
Current thinking is I do dev work + game stuff as a hobby, so I'm kinda neglecting my other hobbies (music mainly). if I could just do game + dev for work I'd have much more time for music, less pay is π€·ββοΈ
Do you ever plan on working on something of your own or building your own team out?
Nothing in particular. Just decided that I like where I am. They sounded like wonderful people and it was a massive project. Maybe in the future.
Fair enough, always nice when you're digging your current situation despite other opportunities coming your way!
I've learned that I really just don't have the motivation or drive to bring projects to fruition myself. π
I need to figure out how to get my foot in the door for the UE-using industry. I have a friend at CDPR actually, but the pay there sounds... yikes
I have plenty of ideas and I'm really passionate about how they should work, but I just end up playing games instead of making them.
I definitely know the feeling
I have a couple of projects I've started and not got anywhere with.
I've got a few core systems down and then just left them. π¦
At one point I was an avid RPG Maker user. Then I stopped being 10
Lol.
That's the tricky thing too, with a job you'd take ownership of some minute detail for fucking ages. Solo, you have to do 10000 things to minimal depth, which I find exhausting. But I can hardly learn the engine just really refining an, IDK, paragliding smulation
I have a friend who uses things like that. SHMUP maker he's doing right now.
He's made and sold more games than the majority of this server, though.
He even has a light gun game in an arcade in the states.
He sounds like he won honestly.
I mean, he makes about $50 max on his games, usually more like $5.
I think the light gun game (made to order) got him about $800.
And it takes him months and months to make them.
He has made at least 1000% more than I've ever made from a game.
I blame AU for dragging the average down SMH. I've got a (free) game on itch that has at least 1 download πͺ
But he's really passionate about games. He puts himself down a lot because he uses the kiddy game makers instead of AAA engines like UE, but he still makes and sells games.
Lol. I think he might have some on there.
He goes by "prince of mars" if you ever see a game made by that, it's him.
People playing games... play games, they don't care about the engine or what it was written with.
The hard part is building transferrable skills, not applying them using some specific tool IMO
I mean, he could be like SWIM and beg people to write an engine for him for his RPG that he's been working on for like 20 years. For free
So I'd say he's doing pretty good all things considered.
His best skill is making pixel art, I think. He made a Time Crisis clone which had pretty nice pixel graphics.
Haha.
Nice, (good) pixel art is rough haha. Sprites in general
He's definitely a retro gamer.
He bought a 5TB hd just to store his roms.
I was like "You know, the second you consolidate all your shit onto that hd, it's going to fail. Make sure you buy a second one and back stuff up."
Has he tried Godot? I've heard GM -> Godot is a relatively smooth transition, and exposes a lot more possibilities in the process
Anyway, GM is probably more advanced than the tooling AAAs had a decade or two ago soo
I think it's funny because I remember trying pixel art for the first time and instantly nope'd and just downloaded what i could from websites suggested by RPG Maker.
Trying to make pixel art?
yeah, trying to make pixel art in MSpaint circa 2005 or something.
Hah.
Yeah, art is hard man.
Just like programming, it has all sorts of techniques you need to know.
I just wanted to make FF10 but better and in 2D :sadpepe:
Well I'd been into programming for a while because my older brother is like really good at it so I've always been more patient when it comes to learning cpp, or python or some other language than really anything else in life.
I just remembered high school computer science class and using java π€’
I liked Java.
I wanted to make Pokemon Australian edition after that artist did a bunch of themed Pokemon, but I realised I'd have to actually learn to draw haha. My artsy skills are limited to banging out power chords on guitar
My older brother is not a programmer. He was a life coach. And is now a business coach.
Sad days.
I can play a single thing on guitar. The main riff from Smoke on the Water.
:feelzman:
I at one point tried to be a rapper.
moving forward
Instant block
s/o/a/
But that was only because my oldest brother was making his own beats so i figured there's gotta be something to it.
Now he's a brand manager.
Wow π
To be fair, that's pretty cool.
Making it in the music industry isn't easy.
Nah, once you realize it's a business just like any other business it puts things in perspective.
It's very true that people sometimes make it because they signed their life away. But then you have people like master p.
I do hope that isn't your brother's trade name.
Music is even worse than games IMO - lower barrier to entry, more competition for everything, and the big hitters dwarf the others even more (relatively)
Lol nah, he's a rapper from new warleans new orleans.
Anything people derive some sort of satisfaction from is rough as a business, such is life
Yeah, but even that got muddied up because everyone is indie now (i'm sure its true of other genres but I'm talking about rap specifically) so if you don't have $$$ you aren't getting anywhere.
I do like the occasional bit of rap and hiphop, tbh, but only when it transcends genre. Like Outkast's Hey Ya! Or Gangster's Paradise. Not artists I'd ever listen to, but they have 1 or 2 songs that are universally liked.
I wouldn't know TBH, I'm into more uh, underground music so de-facto most acts have been indie from the get go
Believe it or not, it's really all the same. Everyone's talking about the experiences of their environment, just using different delivery methods. But that's also kinda the point. Like how people says tutorials are geared to take advantage of people who don't know any better so is the music industry.
And who can not like Rapper's Delight?!
Everything is geared towards taking advantage of people, tbh.
Correct
it's all about the $$$ at the end of the day.
I dunno, there's musical acts I follow that just produce music to produce music, and don't really chase the bag for the sake of it
I can respect that, but then they go a decade in-between releases and then I'm sad
I guess the main difference is that given the right platform you can go from a nobody to a sensation overnight, and record labels don't have to invest as much money into you, but they can still keep the same business model of advancing money and collecting interest based off that.
Absolutely, that's all that matters, and most people who we would deem successful will tell you there's no real money in it anymore now with the introduction of streaming.
There's real money, for the record labels and streaming services π
That's bullshit IMO, you have like a 100x larger market you can tour and sell merch to. A few record sales vs massive exposure π€·ββοΈ
The indie business model is to flood platforms with content and then just kinda self promote until you make enough money to just recycle that money into advertising and then hope that people like you enough to book shows.
Old bands faced the same problems, except they died and no one has heard about them. People think every second band was Beatles or some shit, I swear
See but the reality is once you pay back all that money you had to borrow to do the tour and make the merch etc etc you're not left with enough to pay the bills.
Actually, one bizarre thing I've noticed is rap acts hijacking metal bands to get on discovery playlists? Insanely annoying
Like it will be "Song by Rapper1, Rapper2, Cannibal Corpse", while Cannibal Corpse is some dummy 'fake' act that Spotify doesn't discriminate properly
That's probably the result of some PR firm rather than the rappers, I know a decent amount of rappers and none of them have the knowledge to even think to do something like that. But the reasoning behind it is, once you hear something enough times you'll start to like it.
Yet hasn't the amount of acts touring internationally increased over time? You wouldn't do it for a loss for sure.
Then again, lots of metal bands are sort of side projects - they have professional jobs they take breaks from to tour, then go back to it after all is said and done.
That's the main difference between rap and other genre's, is that for most genre's this is a side gig, where as with rap this is generally the only skill those people have.
Nah no way lol, it's gotta be about the monetisation or algorithm gaming, no one is switching to rap when you're interrupting their listening to IDK, brutal death meta or whatever
but why
shakes walker meeeehhhh back in my day gangsters were trying to be rappers, instead of rappers trying to be gangsters
Like even in football (European), there's a massive push to force the academy kids to continue their education in tandem with their football training, so if they don't make it (most don't), they have a fallback that doesn't involve not existing
I'd hate to put 100% of my survival hopes on something I enjoy, just sounds like a recipe for disaster
Let's be fair, rappers/"gangstas" are a thing, proper gangsters are too busy actually being gangsters.
You'd be surprised, there's a lot of psychology that goes into this stuff. They try to normalize it by making different genres work together and stuff. It's really all a big business.
It would be cruel not to do this.
People will come up with lots of reasons, but if you're asking from someone whose witnessed this stuff, the alternative is selling weed or just standing outside getting drunk all day.
When I explain this I'm told "i just don't get it".
But it's not a mashup, it's a fake band created to hook into discovery playlists. I'm simply not going from death metal to rap, no matter how many times it pops up.
Obviously I'm speaking from a me perspective though, but I don't get how that could work
You might find they're paid per play, though, so by cheating discovery, they're making a small profit.
It sounds very record label manipulation tactics.
And lets not forget for people wo are signed to labels who actually owns the record in question.
The football team I follow posted a series about their academy program, and they basically induct kids by telling them they probably won't make it. It's a brutal competition, and ignoring that fact frequently lead to maladjusted adults with no skills or prospects previously π¦
I find it very funny that people sign away the rights to their own music in their record contracts.
You gotta understand they're using the war on drugs tactic, as long as we can get a single person to switch it was worth it
The war on drugs is also just stupid.
Spend all that money on education about drugs, rehabilitation and regulation and everyone would be better off.
You gotta think about how much money you're getting by streaming music all day doing regular activities, those pennies start to add up at some point.
I still believe that it's to get that minor payout + visibility boost from being played by lots of random people - network effect maybe?
$250k is a lot to someone whose never seen that much.
But there's no reason for any one purpose to be the exclusive one, life is rarely that black and white. Unless you lived pre-80s, before they invented colour
yeah that's part of it, since entertainment can't get loans from banks you also have to manufacture data to take to companies to get business loans and such. Everything is basically run by debt at this point.
Even so. When you're big enough, cancel your contract and go somewhere else.
If you sign away that ability, you're truly an idiot.
Even if there's a cooling off period, you should still be able to do it.
The caveat being that rarely ever happens because you have to remember these people don't know how to manage their money, so they go spend it on whatever they spend it on, and forget that they have albums to make. They hardly ever have their paperwork right so they're indebted to the record label until they pay that advance money off, or sign another contract with someone else who then buys them out of that debt.
They're basically idiots.
Artists are generally gonna be employees, so once they get that advance or bonus it's off to the races and they're getting bank loans to buy houses and cars and all kinds of stuff.
In a business sense sure, but their skills are artistic
First thing you should do if you start to earn lots of capital is to hire a damn accountant.
Correct
Like we said at the beginning it's designed to take advantage of those who don't know any better.
I guess the thing we should add is that it's designed to take advantage of people who otherwise wouldn't see that kind of money.
I bet the majority of them have never even read their contract.
No they haven't.
"Free money? Yes please! Where do I sign?!"
Or who are about to either way, if you discover them at the right time π
I told a relative of mine that he needs to sign a contract saying that his record label doesn't own his masters and he has yet to do it.
I always read things before I sign them.
It makes me wonder, when I sign random shit at a bank or whatever, if they get frustrated because I'm one of the few people who do.
I remember some people interviewing me being surprised I wanted to take the offer home and mull it over 24 hours instead of skimming it and signing it as was the norm. ????
Correct, and that's what they bank on. If you actually know what you're worth then they try to sign a distribution deal. What most people don't know about those is they only match what you put in.
Or one of those "sign here before you take medical test" Yes, I will read that, thank you.
That's what you're supposed to do, but i think the why as to what makes them not do that is because they really don't care about down the line, they just care about right now.
Probably because they're used to people being too desperate for a job, I guess.
Without UBI that's basically the status quo, musicians want $$$ to exist, record labels want music that nets them more than they invest
In software engineering? I decline most offers, assumed that was the norm
And labels will play the long-haul game. So to them it's fine as long as they eventually see their money back. Whereas artist want $$$ right now today.
Lots of people looking for a foot in the door, though.
I somehow always have to push for that one clause to be amended about IP being owned by company. EVERY contract has it, fuck off you don't own everything I do when I'm working at your company. On your devices sure, but my devices, my time... I request an explicit amendment or written clarification on that
IP rules the world
Anyone know why Epic is only using like 10% of my available bandwidth? Definitely not a Windows issue as I have manually set it to use 100% of what it can, and I am connected with ethernet...
Entry level yeah, but I didn't every land an entry level job lol - friend basically hired me when I was at uni, followed him to the next job and after that I had 3 YoE
Is this for 5.1 preview?
Just for anything downloaded in Epic in general, games, unreal assets, all that stuff
would you write a smart contract?
Alexa write a contract for me
Oh fair, bandwidth usage was good for me when 5.0.3 came out, but with 5.1 previews it was an absolute crawl. May just have been a CDN slowdown?
Apparently the download alternates between chunk downloads and decompression, slow as fuck
Do I need to be smart to do that in the first place though? π€
You just need google home or something.
Ah right that's probably it, I'll see if I can tweak the ini files to compensate a bit. Thanks.
Maybe look at this as well - https://forums.unrealengine.com/t/slow-download-speed-and-how-i-fixed-it-in-2-steps/265898
Either way though, entertainment is a field in which you have to be really careful because it's designed to have a winner and a loser.
Especially if you work for EA. The loser is the consumer.
EA Sports ITS IN THE GAME
I'd work for EA TBH π Apparently pretty nice as far as game dev studios go
9.8.9 STUDIOS
EA Sports, because Canada is the logical choice for a population familiar with football

Pretty sure anyone who worked for EA can land a job somewhere else, though.

I do remember being able to cheat a lot of NCAA and old Madden games
I meant FIFA but yeah they are kinda hilarious
funny adobe max and unreal fest same time what
They do? It'd be worse than MLS, oh god

Just go play striker, ya Peter Crouch
Or incredibly boring if you're side is a lot better than the other π
TBF I mostly play futsal now, but in outdoors it's mentally challenging. You g from twiddling thumbs for 10 minutes to having to be ultra sharp within a second, I find it fun
I always chuckle thinking of someone called Crouch being 9 feet tall.
You got his reincarnation in Darwin don't worry. Except without the height, so a lot more underwhelming lol
i was thinking that too
I just play basketball now, but ever since the pandemic (lol i'm lying ever since i had kids) I kinda stopped going to the gym
I think stats go to 99, but overalls can go to 109 or something
I have always sucked at volleyball, but my older brother had to play it as his fall sport in high school to help with his π°
Even though he was dunking the ball in 7th grade.
lol that reminds me of doing a "make my player" thing and just maxing out the stats. It's as though they expected me to be fair.
lololololol they thought you were the next jordan huh?
Old FIFAs had some bizarre net-zero stat system, so to boost one you had to remove stats from another. I hated Ronaldinho being the only player better than Henry, so I nerfed the fuck out of him and pumped the stats up on Henry.
I know the feels
EXCEPT if you go above a certain dribbling stat you would double touch every time, and the turning was slower. Took me way too long to realise what was happening.
I think that got implemented into most sports games because I remember a lot of games post original xbox/playstation 1 being that way.
Sounds like they did what the gameplay programmer for NBA jams did. good ol anti-cheat.
This was FIFA 07 if I'm remembering correctly, so would be the first or second one on the 360? Checks out
EA had like a monopoly on sports games so it seemed easy enough to do
I wonder if next gen actual physical simulation for sports games would be possible, instead of stat rolls + sell it through animation belnding
Had? π
24, 23 is out now
EA Sports FC or something lol
EA Sports FC vs eFootball, the battle of the most creatively bankrupt names possible
I mean they pump games out every season so I'm guessing that might be difficult to do. And they make enough money to not care. probably
2k games ftw
But their games are [old game + 3-4 big features + roster update], in the best case scenario. Surely with computing advances actual simulation would be possible
Would it actually be desirable, fun, and interesting though, is anotehr thing entirely
just like those

So, moving boards?
I feel as though I have made a mistake somewhere
unless this is how conways game of life goes
wait a second thats a 9 mb video
how did i do that
It's fucking loud. Hold space to actually see anything.
And oh god the intro.
you did
i know, im not quite sure how though
you need to iterate over the entire board, then update the state all at once
instead of updating each cell after calculation
I don't watch it much, but it's not bad!
I'm actually not half bad at the non-ice version, bowls.
do you calculate and update each cell sequentially, or calculate the entire grid's changes, then change the grid, then calculate the entire grid again?
calculating the entire grid's new state before changing ensures that the order you iterate over it doesn't matter and is how it's supposed to work
just changed it to where I calculate each cell before, then update it
looks better, but i dont think its following the rules still
ALSO HOW DO I KEEP UPLOADING THINGS >8MB???
i dont have nitro?
there is a code issue, yes, but it looks better
how are you storing the play field?
each tile on the grid is an actor
actor has boolean variables Occupied and ToBeOccupied
each generation I run a loop with the rules, and set ToBeOccupied for each cell
after that, I update them all
tho look I made a fun loop
does each actor have a grid x and grid y value or are you using a distance finding routine?
coordinates
so yeah, grid x and y
i cant use an actual for loop to check the rules, because using my function to find the 8 cells around a cell breaks it (makes it think theres an infinite loop), so I instead increment through an array of all the cells
array of cells is how it's typically done, so in that case you'd have each cell reference it's corresponding array value and update it's color?
yeah, thats what im doing
it looks right assuming the center one is the fixed on player
yeah, the center one is always active, and is the player
but i cant seem to understand why the simulation keeps failing
im quite sure the rules are correct
it doesnt seem to be following the rules though
like in the video above, there was a line of 3, according to the wikipedia page, that should keep flipping to stand upright, but it just dies
and in this video, that loop doesnt exist in the original simulation
but i cant quite place my finger on whats going on
also multiple still lifes died
try it without the player cursor
start with the noninteractive version
and maybe add a blinking tick counter hud or something to make timesteps more apparent
or alternate colors of live cells between red and green each tick for troubleshooting
oh, stupid question!
do you start your board arrays at 0 or 1?
if 1, your board edge math (wich is probably modulo) is off by 1
0 i believe
starting first row, first column (bottom left) and going up each row
though the middle is (0, 0)
heres the function that creates the grid
ok... not gonna lie here...
I'm 8 hours ahead of my usual timezone, overseas, with just a phone, I'm not good with UE yet, and I'm a bit drunk...
so I can't really tell what's going on with that at a glance
ah its ok ill figure it out
populate with some very predictable 3x3 and 6x6 patterns instead of random
see if it behaves right for known structures
this should be the most predictable pattern
that middle one shouldnt keep deleting
after all, it has 2 neighbors
the neighbors are working as expected
but for some reason that ones not
you are right and I bet I know why
please do say
is it checking itself?
wdym? the cell?
nope
yo, why not #ue4-general or #ue5-general
yeah im going to make in cpp, just wanted to do it in bp first so i make sure ik what im doing
also after checking the number of neighbor cells for this loop, its obvious that it is in fact registering the middle as 2, as seen in this clip, 1 2 1, 1 for the outsides of the line, and 2 for the middle, so theres no reason the middle should die
oh wait shit i get it now
i forget to set ToBeOccupied to true when its between 2 and 3
ha lol works now
i didnt ask a question tho

there might be a better way to compile to bytecode in new sequence node
where is the new docs for this?
im trying to figure out this new stuff lol
I dont know, just guessed why the change happened
since Blueprint VM just ignores the sequence in its own bytecode
and control rig has its own VM
hmm
lots of small changes like this
is RigVMCodeGenerator something new?
it looks like control rig is transpiled into c++ code
it parses node and creates a c++ file i guess
control rig has its own separate VM
yeah but did it have a code generator?
Not sure what they mean by code generator
RigVMCodeGenerator.cpp
from what I can see it parses the nodes and creates a c++ file
it has function params like this: URigVM* InVMToNativize
it isn't a thing in 5.0 so probably why I'm not familiar with it
then Epic introduced RigVM nativization in 5.1 π₯³
( how much optimization you need Fortnite?
)
Lets hope it goes better than BP nativization π
I'm still curious why BP nativization didnt go well, on technical side
Still mad that they didn't port the struct function support from the ctrl rig VM to BPs....
i have noticed a fps increase from the control rig i was using in 5.0 to 5.1 like 4 - 5 frames.
lol
not much but hey!
i guess it matters for mobiles and low end hardware a lot on 100 players
it might be a thing in packaged projects like what BP nativization was doing
Doubt it's doing it in editor
If he had been around during the NES days he would be RICH
it worked allrigh when you nativized a bunch of heavy math linetrace stuff
thing is ppl often make stuff like a rotator in BP instead of using a rotator component π
nativizing ur whole project was generally a bad idea
there is soo much stuff already pre made that u tend to make stuff thats allready there
all BP components are 100% c++ ppl often forget that

how big is that project's scope?
replacing/modifying lumen is quite bold action to take
are you working in next witcher game
very big lol
nope
That white paper has a new feature worth its own white paper every half page.
i did a on off switch test for lumen and baked lighting. seems like a good move for players that want more fps. Worked perfectly.
If you can use baked lighting, what is lumen for?
lumen is dynamic, baked is static
If you can use baked, the scene has to be static and not dynamic. Lumen can do either, but is it worth the cost compared to intermediate techniques?
....Did fortnite remove building so they could switch to baked lighting?
dunno.. i turned of shaddows in FN π
generally ill take a perf hit over messing with the renderer
perhaps it's a case where a game could go either way, so test to see which is better and if dynamic is a low relative cost it's worth it for other reason
like mayB if its railshooter and camera loc/rot is known for every frame
you could build a custom and get big gains
or shadows from swaying trees vs static trees
I saw one tutorial on baked lighting that made me never want to use it
hell i make the sun purple and think it looks cool π
his advice for the render area circle thingies was "I don't know what they do, just make them about this big and drop them overlapping everywhere kind of randomly"
he even showed the effect of being in and out of one!
it was obvious that baked lighting is displayed for all objects for which the camera is within the circle
thus placement should be done carefully
those?
nope
everything in the same circle as the camera had lighting and shadows applied, everything outside was unlit
etm, no...
not unlit, unbaked, as if it were just the textures as rendered
Lumen can be turned off at runtime. From here you can create a bool is lumen off? then use this light, that light. some of it does not bake properly and some areas are darker, but we are still trying to figure this out.
maybe even pre bake it, then save it. and load it i dont know, we just wanted to test if it was possible first. yes it is.
oh, so you can bake indoors while still having a day/night cycle outside?
create a trigger volume or some kind or trigger for it to turn off once you go in the house. same thing on exiting the house
should work perfectly
"Only one Lighting Scenario level should be visible at any time in a game. "
That's a disappointment.
note the word should, not shall or must

DreamWorld's Kickstarter campaign raised $64,706, which the developers acknowledged was only a small portion of its necessary budget. "We know MMOs cannot be built with just $10K," the campaign page reads, referring to the Kickstarter's original goal. "We've secured the majority of our funding from some of the best investors in Silicon Valley." The campaign promises, among other features, "multiplayer with the population density of real cities" and a fully dynamic environment with no fixed interaction points. Each backer is to receive a plot of land commensurate to their backer tier on which they can construct whatever they want. The Kickstarter even claims that players can import 3D models from "anywhere online." If all that were in the game, it would be like Second Life built on next-next-next gen tech.```

in the old days you took animals behind the sauna to slaughter them, that way it would be a short walk to wash yourself
or something like that π
I need to learn more about unit tests because I didn't know they were perceived experienced as inconvenient
my biggest beef is the "just program it correctly" mentality this CTO has π
I mean the fact that the guy noticed there were tests must mean the test failed
how else would he know
so either the code or the test was failed
i dunno the slaughter part sounds pretty bad aswell
sayings are rarely to be taken seriously
yea.. im not a man of culture π
this project is a microservice hellscape tbh
the unit tests the guy was complaining about are defined in project A and then published as a nuget package
for whatever reason
weird reason
then project B uses those tests
so now if you change some data model and or functionality you gotta change project A too and publish a new nuget package with a new version
and then use that new version in the other project to fix the tests
I have no idea why this was done this way π
when i read some1 did something in a country and than got stoned... im like ... getting stoned aint that bad
turned out... it was
me getting stoned with the boys on a friday night
you can see his hesitation trying to not break the camera lol
does your job has a sauna in the building @fluid bloom ?
mine did when I worked in finland
never used it though
I'm pretty sure it has
There's two where I work. π (Sweden, oddly enough)
Normally I would rag on mobile games right now
But now that I think about it
This is a place where people learn and grow
So if they wanna do a mobile game, I wont judge
Thats cool
so how much spongebob do you actually watch?
Oh I wrote that about 6 months ago
I was on a spongebob kick for like a week
I should change it
The lego part isint accurate either at this point
too bad
Theyre raising their prices to the point where I dont care enough
for the longest time I thought swedes were also sauna goers but just today I read from reddit a post by a swede that said a dry sauna (so, a finnish sauna) is one where you don't throw water on the hot stones
instead you just sit in the hot room
50 euros at the least for any pack
wtf, what's the point of a sauna without the steam
at least piss on the stones if you don't have any water available /s

still not as offended as that time a guy offered me a junior java developer job
Considering the number of people on this server, that isn't very many.
I always wondered why afk voice chats existed
if you're afk why are you in a voice chat at all?
It's because you go afk while in a voice chat.
It puts you there automatically after a while.
throw the user out instead?
Not a sauna expert, but every public sauna I have been in, and the ones at work, there's a small bucket and a wooden spoon to use when you want to throw some water on the hot stones. But you don't have to. So it's kind if a mix?
It's very hot and relaxing. π (And we do throw sone water on the stones when we feel we need some steam)
