primal summit
#

yep, but a construction site will do well enough

zinc matrix
#

So what are you going to do, constrain the game within certain bounds?

#

That's prob the simplest way to do it

primal summit
#

not sure

#

probably for mapping simplicity

zinc matrix
#

but it would also be cool to see some sort of system where you can travel infinitely, and the game could continue across an infinite expanse

primal summit
#

no reason it can't in theory

#

just not a practical scale to start

zinc matrix
#

theoretically, you could save it all in some sort of binary file for memory, each cell could be 0 or 1 occupied or not

#

I'd imagine storing all that info in the game files would get pretty performance heavy as you travel further away

primal summit
#

it'd probably be more efficient to save just coordinates of occupied cells

zinc matrix
#

Probably

zinc matrix
#

even the most seemingly infinite games have a limit, minecraft is a great example

#

I think it's smth like 30 million meters away for that

#

Theoretically tho, with how little this game concept would store it would take years to ever get far enough away to break it

#

Maybe years is a bit of an exaggeration but you'd have to be crazy to do it

#

Also I'm wondering how hard the game will be, like a simple puzzle game, or like 2048

#

Because the larger the simulation would get, the harder to end

#

Maybe some sort of limiting factor would be needed to prevent it getting so far out of hand that there's nothing the player can do about it

primal summit
#

and if you make it more than just a kill cells game but have actual npcs doing stuff and moving and reacting to your environmental changes...

zinc matrix
#

maybe this isn't as simple a concept as first thought...

primal summit
#

game of life is, but emergent properties and adding another layer to it could be fun...

Quora is like Reddit, if every comment was maximising for SEO for some fucking reason.

You know those recipes, that start with 10 paragraphs of life stories, details about their family you don't care about, and 4 rehashings of how much their family loves their meal - all before actually getting to the 2 paragraphs the recipe takes? Yeah every second Quora comment is that, for whatever reason.

In other words, I'm keen for the transition to Quora. I can finally practice my blogspam skills

both work through challenges with ever-increasing levels of violence to complete their task which is to get to an innocent person they love who's being protected by someone else
both have two primary parties acting to stop them

only difference is mario never realizes he's the bad guy going against a changing social norm

also to model one you should use blender or an actual modeling tool

ue5 has model making functionality, but its not ideal when compared to actual modeling programs

thorny dock

that was the plot for the canceled second super mario movie with bob hoskins

regal pecan

that sounds like the plot for TMNT

maybe someone failed to sell their script to the TMNT franchise and reworked it for Super Mario without realizing they should trash it (or make a B horror movie)

deep copper
zinc matrix

thats why some times in the year, theres a higher chance male turtles are born, and other times theres a higher chance for females.

idk if that would work

regal pecan

Left is right, up is down is a simple toroidal wrapping, and pretty ideal for rectangular things

zinc matrix
#

imagine cgol on that

#

seems like itd be pretty complicated to make tho

regal pecan
#

Tricky part is the rules require each square to have 8 neighbors. I'm not sure it qualifies as "cgol" if you have to compromise on that in order to tile squares imperfectly around a sphere

zinc matrix
#

i mean the same rules base can apply, itd just be 5 instead of 8

#

also i cant think of a way to do torodial wrapping and still make it look cool.

#

i dont know how I would do it too, teleport the player when theyre at the edge? cant think of a way to do that seemlessly

rare sparrow
zinc matrix
#

maybe i could have a preview of whats going on on the other side of the board outside of the bounds, and when the player hits the bounds they wont even notice

regal pecan
#

e.g. the representative grid is what you see, and is in global coords, while the actual data for the grid is in bounded coords (if x > width, x - width)

But he's really passionate about games. He puts himself down a lot because he uses the kiddy game makers instead of AAA engines like UE, but he still makes and sells games.

He goes by "prince of mars" if you ever see a game made by that, it's him.

I mean, he could be like SWIM and beg people to write an engine for him for his RPG that he's been working on for like 20 years. For free

So I'd say he's doing pretty good all things considered.

He's definitely a retro gamer.

He bought a 5TB hd just to store his roms.

Has he tried Godot? I've heard GM -> Godot is a relatively smooth transition, and exposes a lot more possibilities in the process

Anyway, GM is probably more advanced than the tooling AAAs had a decade or two ago soo

thin aspen
#

I think it's funny because I remember trying pixel art for the first time and instantly nope'd and just downloaded what i could from websites suggested by RPG Maker.

fleet tangle
#

Trying to make pixel art?

thin aspen
#

yeah, trying to make pixel art in MSpaint circa 2005 or something.

fleet tangle
#

Hah.

#

Yeah, art is hard man.

#

Just like programming, it has all sorts of techniques you need to know.

thin aspen
#

I just wanted to make FF10 but better and in 2D :sadpepe:

#

Well I'd been into programming for a while because my older brother is like really good at it so I've always been more patient when it comes to learning cpp, or python or some other language than really anything else in life.

#

I just remembered high school computer science class and using java 🀒

fleet tangle
#

I liked Java.

noble plaza
#

I wanted to make Pokemon Australian edition after that artist did a bunch of themed Pokemon, but I realised I'd have to actually learn to draw haha. My artsy skills are limited to banging out power chords on guitar

fleet tangle
#

My older brother is not a programmer. He was a life coach. And is now a business coach.

#

Sad days.

#

I can play a single thing on guitar. The main riff from Smoke on the Water.

thin aspen
#

I at one point tried to be a rapper.

#

moving forward

fleet tangle
#

Instant block

noble plaza
thin aspen
#

But that was only because my oldest brother was making his own beats so i figured there's gotta be something to it.

#

Now he's a brand manager.

fleet tangle
#

To be fair, that's pretty cool.

#

Making it in the music industry isn't easy.

thin aspen
#

Nah, once you realize it's a business just like any other business it puts things in perspective.

#

It's very true that people sometimes make it because they signed their life away. But then you have people like master p.

fleet tangle
#

I do hope that isn't your brother's trade name.

noble plaza
#

Music is even worse than games IMO - lower barrier to entry, more competition for everything, and the big hitters dwarf the others even more (relatively)

thin aspen
#

Lol nah, he's a rapper from new warleans new orleans.

noble plaza
#

Anything people derive some sort of satisfaction from is rough as a business, such is life

thin aspen
fleet tangle
#

I do like the occasional bit of rap and hiphop, tbh, but only when it transcends genre. Like Outkast's Hey Ya! Or Gangster's Paradise. Not artists I'd ever listen to, but they have 1 or 2 songs that are universally liked.

noble plaza
thin aspen
#

Believe it or not, it's really all the same. Everyone's talking about the experiences of their environment, just using different delivery methods. But that's also kinda the point. Like how people says tutorials are geared to take advantage of people who don't know any better so is the music industry.

fleet tangle
#

And who can not like Rapper's Delight?!

#

Everything is geared towards taking advantage of people, tbh.

thin aspen
#

Correct

fleet tangle
#

it's all about the $$$ at the end of the day.

noble plaza
#

I dunno, there's musical acts I follow that just produce music to produce music, and don't really chase the bag for the sake of it

#

I can respect that, but then they go a decade in-between releases and then I'm sad

thin aspen
thin aspen
fleet tangle
#

There's real money, for the record labels and streaming services πŸ˜‚

noble plaza
thin aspen
#

The indie business model is to flood platforms with content and then just kinda self promote until you make enough money to just recycle that money into advertising and then hope that people like you enough to book shows.

noble plaza
#

Old bands faced the same problems, except they died and no one has heard about them. People think every second band was Beatles or some shit, I swear

thin aspen
noble plaza
#

Actually, one bizarre thing I've noticed is rap acts hijacking metal bands to get on discovery playlists? Insanely annoying

#

Like it will be "Song by Rapper1, Rapper2, Cannibal Corpse", while Cannibal Corpse is some dummy 'fake' act that Spotify doesn't discriminate properly

thin aspen
#

That's probably the result of some PR firm rather than the rappers, I know a decent amount of rappers and none of them have the knowledge to even think to do something like that. But the reasoning behind it is, once you hear something enough times you'll start to like it.

noble plaza
thin aspen
noble plaza

shakes walker meeeehhhh back in my day gangsters were trying to be rappers, instead of rappers trying to be gangsters

noble plaza
#

Like even in football (European), there's a massive push to force the academy kids to continue their education in tandem with their football training, so if they don't make it (most don't), they have a fallback that doesn't involve not existing

#

I'd hate to put 100% of my survival hopes on something I enjoy, just sounds like a recipe for disaster

fleet tangle
thin aspen
fleet tangle
thin aspen
# noble plaza but **why**

People will come up with lots of reasons, but if you're asking from someone whose witnessed this stuff, the alternative is selling weed or just standing outside getting drunk all day.

thin aspen
noble plaza
#

But it's not a mashup, it's a fake band created to hook into discovery playlists. I'm simply not going from death metal to rap, no matter how many times it pops up.

Obviously I'm speaking from a me perspective though, but I don't get how that could work

fleet tangle
#

You might find they're paid per play, though, so by cheating discovery, they're making a small profit.

#

It sounds very record label manipulation tactics.

thin aspen
noble plaza
# fleet tangle It would be cruel not to do this.

The football team I follow posted a series about their academy program, and they basically induct kids by telling them they probably won't make it. It's a brutal competition, and ignoring that fact frequently lead to maladjusted adults with no skills or prospects previously 😦

fleet tangle
#

I find it very funny that people sign away the rights to their own music in their record contracts.

thin aspen
fleet tangle
#

The war on drugs is also just stupid.

#

Spend all that money on education about drugs, rehabilitation and regulation and everyone would be better off.

thin aspen
#

You gotta think about how much money you're getting by streaming music all day doing regular activities, those pennies start to add up at some point.

noble plaza
thin aspen
noble plaza
#

But there's no reason for any one purpose to be the exclusive one, life is rarely that black and white. Unless you lived pre-80s, before they invented colour

thin aspen
fleet tangle
#

If you sign away that ability, you're truly an idiot.

#

Even if there's a cooling off period, you should still be able to do it.

thin aspen
# fleet tangle Even so. When you're big enough, cancel your contract and go somewhere else.

The caveat being that rarely ever happens because you have to remember these people don't know how to manage their money, so they go spend it on whatever they spend it on, and forget that they have albums to make. They hardly ever have their paperwork right so they're indebted to the record label until they pay that advance money off, or sign another contract with someone else who then buys them out of that debt.

fleet tangle
#

They're basically idiots.

thin aspen
#

Artists are generally gonna be employees, so once they get that advance or bonus it's off to the races and they're getting bank loans to buy houses and cars and all kinds of stuff.

noble plaza
#

In a business sense sure, but their skills are artistic

fleet tangle
#

First thing you should do if you start to earn lots of capital is to hire a damn accountant.

thin aspen
#

Like we said at the beginning it's designed to take advantage of those who don't know any better.

#

I guess the thing we should add is that it's designed to take advantage of people who otherwise wouldn't see that kind of money.

fleet tangle
#

I bet the majority of them have never even read their contract.

thin aspen
#

No they haven't.

fleet tangle
#

"Free money? Yes please! Where do I sign?!"

noble plaza
thin aspen
#

I told a relative of mine that he needs to sign a contract saying that his record label doesn't own his masters and he has yet to do it.

fleet tangle
#

I always read things before I sign them.

#

It makes me wonder, when I sign random shit at a bank or whatever, if they get frustrated because I'm one of the few people who do.

noble plaza
thin aspen
fleet tangle
#

Or one of those "sign here before you take medical test" Yes, I will read that, thank you.

thin aspen
#

That's what you're supposed to do, but i think the why as to what makes them not do that is because they really don't care about down the line, they just care about right now.

how did i do that

fleet tangle
#

It's fucking loud. Hold space to actually see anything.

#

And oh god the intro.

primal summit
zinc matrix
#

i know, im not quite sure how though

primal summit
#

you need to iterate over the entire board, then update the state all at once

#

instead of updating each cell after calculation

fleet tangle
#

I'm actually not half bad at the non-ice version, bowls.

primal summit
#

calculating the entire grid's new state before changing ensures that the order you iterate over it doesn't matter and is how it's supposed to work

zinc matrix
#

looks better, but i dont think its following the rules still

#

ALSO HOW DO I KEEP UPLOADING THINGS >8MB???

#

i dont have nitro?

primal summit
#

there is a code issue, yes, but it looks better

#

how are you storing the play field?

zinc matrix
#

each tile on the grid is an actor

#

actor has boolean variables Occupied and ToBeOccupied

#

each generation I run a loop with the rules, and set ToBeOccupied for each cell

#

after that, I update them all

primal summit
#

does each actor have a grid x and grid y value or are you using a distance finding routine?

zinc matrix
#

so yeah, grid x and y

#

i cant use an actual for loop to check the rules, because using my function to find the 8 cells around a cell breaks it (makes it think theres an infinite loop), so I instead increment through an array of all the cells

primal summit
#

array of cells is how it's typically done, so in that case you'd have each cell reference it's corresponding array value and update it's color?

zinc matrix
#

yeah, thats what im doing

primal summit
#

it looks right assuming the center one is the fixed on player

zinc matrix
#

yeah, the center one is always active, and is the player

#

but i cant seem to understand why the simulation keeps failing

#

im quite sure the rules are correct

primal summit
#

failing how?

#

a very heavily populated grid like that will mostly die

zinc matrix
#

it doesnt seem to be following the rules though

#

like in the video above, there was a line of 3, according to the wikipedia page, that should keep flipping to stand upright, but it just dies

zinc matrix
#

but i cant quite place my finger on whats going on

#

also multiple still lifes died

primal summit
#

try it without the player cursor

#

start with the noninteractive version

#

and maybe add a blinking tick counter hud or something to make timesteps more apparent

#

or alternate colors of live cells between red and green each tick for troubleshooting

#

oh, stupid question!

#

do you start your board arrays at 0 or 1?

#

if 1, your board edge math (wich is probably modulo) is off by 1

zinc matrix
#

starting first row, first column (bottom left) and going up each row

#

though the middle is (0, 0)

#

heres the function that creates the grid

ah its ok ill figure it out

primal summit

populate with some very predictable 3x3 and 6x6 patterns instead of random

#

zinc matrix

that middle one shouldnt keep deleting

#

after all, it has 2 neighbors

#

the neighbors are working as expected

#

but for some reason that ones not

primal summit
#

you are right and I bet I know why

zinc matrix
#

please do say

primal summit

is it checking itself?

zinc matrix

wdym? the cell?

is it counting itself in the check of adjacent cells?

not unlit, unbaked, as if it were just the textures as rendered

maybe even pre bake it, then save it. and load it i dont know, we just wanted to test if it was possible first. yes it is.

oh, so you can bake indoors while still having a day/night cycle outside?

should work perfectly

DreamWorld's Kickstarter campaign raised $64,706, which the developers acknowledged was only a small portion of its necessary budget. "We know MMOs cannot be built with just $10K," the campaign page reads, referring to the Kickstarter's original goal. "We've secured the majority of our funding from some of the best investors in Silicon Valley." The campaign promises, among other features, "multiplayer with the population density of real cities" and a fully dynamic environment with no fixed interaction points. Each backer is to receive a plot of land commensurate to their backer tier on which they can construct whatever they want. The Kickstarter even claims that players can import 3D models from "anywhere online." If all that were in the game, it would be like Second Life built on next-next-next gen tech.```

Not necessarily a plotted scam per se, just that the devs are far too incompetent to get things working.

I remember there's a mention they attempt to distance cull things with fog a la old games, but they're just using translucent sphere.

from the context it's unpleasant, but sauna?

carmine frigate

not something i ever heared at work... thats for sure

fluid bloom

in the old days you took animals behind the sauna to slaughter them, that way it would be a short walk to wash yourself

#

or something like that πŸ˜„

regal pecan
#

I need to learn more about unit tests because I didn't know they were perceived experienced as inconvenient

fluid bloom
#

my biggest beef is the "just program it correctly" mentality this CTO has πŸ˜„

proud jay
#

I mean the fact that the guy noticed there were tests must mean the test failed

#

how else would he know

#

so either the code or the test was failed

carmine frigate

i dunno the slaughter part sounds pretty bad aswell

fluid bloom

carmine frigate

yea.. im not a man of culture πŸ˜›

fluid bloom

this project is a microservice hellscape tbh

#

the unit tests the guy was complaining about are defined in project A and then published as a nuget package

#

for whatever reason

#

weird reason

#

then project B uses those tests

#

so now if you change some data model and or functionality you gotta change project A too and publish a new nuget package with a new version

#

and then use that new version in the other project to fix the tests

#

I have no idea why this was done this way πŸ˜„

It's because you go afk while in a voice chat.

throw the user out instead?

flint pier
# fluid bloom instead you just sit in the hot room

Not a sauna expert, but every public sauna I have been in, and the ones at work, there's a small bucket and a wooden spoon to use when you want to throw some water on the hot stones. But you don't have to. So it's kind if a mix?

flint pier
fluid bloom
#

sure you don't have to

#

but I mean, the whole point is that

#

throwing too much water isn't fun though, the goal isn't to cook people
