What I do is recommend going one mechanic at a time. Yes a ton of them interlock, but it’s the best you can do.

For example, I learned with Communist China. There’s no navy, no Airforce, no tanks, just you, infantry, guns, and Calvary. The game stripped bare.

Small, simple but not horrible focus tree.
Geographically isolated from threats (literally only the US and they usually aren’t a problem)
Able to kinda pursue whatever area of warfare you prefer and make an impact, albeit mostly focused on one theater

Only real downside is that you need to wait for war to break out to get to a decent chunk of your focus tree branches

But I recently had a lot of fun doing a pacific theater oriented Canada with a decent sized navy to supplement the US, and using rangers and marines to help invade the islands

And most importantly afaik the Canada focus tree doesn’t require dlc

So if they only have base game it’s not like they’re missing content
