Okay so in vanilla what you want to do is get proper heritage, make a 2-width cavalry and a 40/50-width cavalry template

Also the third mountaineer upgrade helps with this as well, as it reduces the xp cost of mountaineers and ranger recon by half

If you don't have armored recon you go for mountaineer rangers

If you don't have super-heavy howitzer you go for normal artillery

If you don't have assault engineers you can use pioneers or normal engineers

So yeah you can make a good template early and then substitute the good stuff later on; you don't have to do it all at once

Can someone tell me when and how to do Barbarossa?

I have over a thousand hours in this game but I have never once played vanilla.

A few days ago I finally tried, a vanilla Germany run, 1941 and all was going well, the Allies were all down save for the UK, USA wasn't in the conflict yet and I had even Yugoslavia and Spain join the Axis.

I waited for April 1942 to launch Barbarossa ( I thought my army was too small at the time and I wanted to develop medium tanks) so I did, I had about all of my 217 Divisions ( about 120 were infantry and the rest were a mix of medium and light tanks along with motorized) on the Soviet border. The soviets had about 384.

Supply wasn't really an issue and I basically had the upper hand in the air front.

So I launched the operation, things on the Romanian border and the Baltics went well, I made several encirclements that must have killed about a 100 Soviet divisions, I managed to get full control of Ukraine and all of the Caucasus regions.... But on Belarus it was an absolute nightmare, I barely managed to breakthrough,and was basically bogged down.

Another thing, even with all of those encirclements, air superiority on most fronts and my allies doing a surprisingly good job ( save for Finland who for some reason only had 20 divisions and almost immediately collapsed) I was still getting more casualties than the Soviets in combat, like way more, if it wasn't for the encirclements it would have been a 2.5 casualty ratio in the Soviet's favor.

Eventually my gamble crumbled, with all of my divisions on the Soviets the Allies launched D day on 1943 and both fronts started to collapse and I just rage quit.

So why did I fail? Did I wait too long? Maybe too little divisions(I honestly made as many as my manpower allowed me to, my casualties up to the invasion were only 61k)?

I put medical support on infantry and logistics on my tanks so that did suck a lot of resources, also I invested a lot of time in trying to improve my supply lines instead of building mills.

I didn't do Reichkommissariats so that might have also sucked manpower?

I want any advice because I really don't want to go through that again, I was having so much fun in this run only for all of it to crumble and me not really understanding why.
