Regarding the engines, important point to add is that I did it on a fresh install of MacOS on my M2 Pro and I only had those 4. I erased everything because I messed up a lot with Portingkit.

I would expect more engine options. I did not have the rc engine as an option on my primary partition but it did show up on my test partition. No clue why you get different engine options.

Other option is to create a second partition on your Mac. Install an OS (I have Sequoia) and then WS. I found I got 80FPS on my test partition but only 60FPS with same software on my primary.
Setting up a 2nd partition is fairly easy. There is an Apple support article for it that I followed. Doesnāt chew a lot of extra disk space either.

for a few days the problem witn instance happening to me, right after I deleted and reinstalled poe, was ok when I donwloaded it before league start: the problem is solved by trying to play button, restart poe until loading screen and classes' models are non low textured

thatll save u some time trying to load in and still crash
sometimes i see the proper models on second load, sometimes it takes 3 or 4 but its much quicker than trying to load in every time and getting mad at crashes
i slightly can tell, but my render resolution is already at 57% so the difference isn't obvious

it's not -THAT- hard, especially the simpler methods like wineskin. IMO worth a try.
and cleanup (again, for the simpler methods) is easy too.
Can you provide a screenshot. I am not sure what you mean by update loop. There are 2 challenges with the standalone. Iāve had to use both on occasion.
It will take you less than 5 minutes to setup the WS wrapper. The most time is because of the download of 40GB, which is slow, even on a Fiber connection. Youāre going to get 40FPS or higher, plus APT works. You owe it to your sanity to give it a shot. GGG aināt fixing this.

Uh. I removed all my installs except for the GPTK one yesterday, so I officially only have the one setup but even when I had the standalone that never happened. When it happened did you remove update.dat, Hashcache.date and the executable (not Content.ggpk) and try again ?
Also when it happens what does the security setting in the privacy tab say. Is Path of Exile blocked ?
no its not blocked, ive tried removing it off my system entirely and reinstalling from the dmg file

thats the first thing i did when the hotfix broke it, i deleted absolutely everything and restarted my computer then downloaded the DMG and tried to install
and it just loops that 40mb patch and doesnt even try and download the full game

fixed the redownload, youve gotta move the file to bin then back to ~/Library/Application\ Support/Path\ of\ Exile`
now its starting a fresh download of the standalone macos client

you run the installer dmg, it downloads a 40mb patch and says its corrupted and you should move it to trash, click move to trash, then go and manually paste it in that directory ~/Library/Application\ Support/Path\ of\ Exile`
and run it straight from there, itll start the real download

This is the annoying thing about this issue - you have a slightly different version of the same underlying issue. Because you did not have the same symptoms I assumed this fix wouldn't work for you - #mac-osš message
There was a post for the issue you have but discord sucks at searches. The second solution is closer to what you reported. It also avoids the whole 40GB+ download rubbish apparently -

Oh - and DON'T use a cleaner app. Those are mostly useless. Plus there is a pinned post on how to remove the standalone files from your system that is IMHO much safer to use. I'm not sure it is actually necessary to remove all the other files anyway. Might be better off leaving them there.

Is the standlone working now ? I'm trying the second method but won't be able to test if it avoids a full download till the next patch comes out but it certainly works for performing an install from scratch.
There are at last count 6 options to work around the mess the Steam client for MAC is. Bizarrely they don't all seem to work for everyone, but hopefully one of them will. They are in no order of preference, though 3-5 are the easiest to set up (#1 would be except for the issues it has).
- Standalone client (with at least 2 methods to resolve the update issues).
- Apple GPTK.
- portingkit (PK).
- Wineskin (WS).
- Crossover.
- GFN (others have mentioned it. No direct experience).
I believe APT will work with all of them, even GFN. I remember reading a post the other day on how to get it going. I believe it involves using a VPN and some sort of port forwarding. I will see if I can find it again.

You are still running Monterey though. All this rubbish started on the OS after that. If you upgraded you would have the same issues, which is a good reason not to upgraqde if you don't have to š

aaah yea, and there is an option for others to create a second part of the HD with lower macOS on, if ppl didnt know about this. But the performance on poe isnt rly that good with mac install anyway, to install or run the pc-format is better if ppl want to do that
Ouch. My setup has finished. It fired up and was able to get 60FPS in HO. I'd expect that drop to 35-40 in maps and other activities which is as much as you can get given the Mac client has an FPS cap.
The cap doesn't affect the lows however, does it.
No - it just means you will never see an FPS above 60 with the stand alone. I don't use Steam so I don't know if it was possible to go above 60FPS with it but I suspect not as it would be the same client as the standalone I assume.
One funny thing I noticed is how the WS version eats up WAY LESS RAM on my machine than the native.

Try WS or PK first. WS is a litlte less GUI friendly but the pinned message on how to get it going should get you to the finish line. When you get to the selecting the engine post a screenshot of what engine options you see. The engine is the trickies part. You can change it easily enough if it is not the correct one. It certainly beats what you are putting up with now.
The standalone should be an option as well but it is glitchy to get going and maintain so try WS first.

Read all the comments section first. You could use something other than ngrok for the same results. Personally it was too much fiddling for me to try out but maybe someone else has the patience to do so

Make sure you select the D3DMetal option in the configuration menu and of course have the correct renderer_type set.
That version of Sonoma should be fine. I used 14.2.1 but @viral flame used 14.6 which I upgraded to and it still worked on that too. Keep going !

No. Should be able to leave that as is. All the content for POE should reside in the Wineskin bottle. It will look for the production_Config.ini file in Documents -> My Games -> Path of Exile.
If that is where Steam puts the config file then that just means they 'll share it. Otherwise the WS install will either create it or you will need to create it wit hjust the renderer configuration in it.

before it was an empty file so i put in the line for renderer_type

and had the issue
now the file is full of poe settings and renderer was overwritten
I was about to say "check the ini file" - it is one of the 2 reasons you see what you saw. Go back and change the entry to DirectX12, save it and try to run it again

Your email address and password - I think @atomic herald has a comment in here how to "transfer" from Steam. I'll see if I can find it. If you are at the login screen though that is a good sign. It should just work once you are able to login

There is a pasword reset option on POE site for login - you just need to remember what your email address is. I'm not familiar enough with Steam to help but I assume the steam client for POE would be using the same email address you'll need to use to login under WS as well. Your in the home stretch š

Yes. All the Windows options will be available to you. I'm sure you are disappointed to see 85FPS on a Mac with POE š¤£
Sometimes you just need a little encouragement to take that step. You might have other games on Steam but I doubt you'll be using Steam for POE. Even if GGG fix it I find this setup is much easier to maintain
Now you've saved your sanity you can get back to enjoying the game.
If only we could get @azure ridge going on WS or PK, but at least the stand alone works for them. I have made videos of the steps for WS if anyone needs them in te future but it seems the pinned message should be enough to get someone going.
What did you need to do to login to the new client instead of via Steam - it would be good to have the steps outlined. I can add them to the pinned messages.

generally i'd say
- Go to the Poe homepage and login via steam
- Click on your account name and click on Manage account
- You'll see your email. Either set up a password or reset it via the forgot your password login option.
- Use those credentials to log in in-game
If you've played poe, you have a standalone poe account. whether that was on steam doesn't matter.

If you use an online filter and no custom sounds your filters should be fine too. If you used custom sounds and/or a filter file, put those sounds and the filter file in the same folder as the ini file and everything should work as it used to.

Technically they are using the Windows standalone client so there should be no issues with patching. The other advantage is, because it's the Windows client, if there are issues, they get fixed quicker

Occasionally you might run into an issue that the update process can't overwrite the Path of Exile executable using one of the Windows clients. It may or may not happen using Crossover but will on Kegworks and portingkit at least. To fix this (and sadly you will need to do so every time it happens).
- You need to go into drive_c - > Program Files (x86) -> Grinding Gear Games -> Path of Exile. To get there is slightly different depening on what you use. For Kegworks you right click the icon and choose "Show Package contents". Select Contents-> drive_c. Go from there. For portingkit right click on icon. Choose Show in Finder -> Contents -> drive_c.
- rename the PathofExile.exe file to something else (PathofExile.old for example).
- Change the PathOfExile.tmp to PathofExile.exe
- Kick off the update again (double click the PathOfExile.exe file should do the trick). It will not download the 40+GB file, just the patch update.
The Mac stand alone still has issues, for which there is a tedious workaround. Unless of course you were smart enough not to upgrade your OS beyond Monterey.
Now ... who do we send the invoice to at GGG for providing all the workarounds is what I want to know š

There is a link to the latest dmg file and how to change the keys if you need to. I don't think you need to install APT via WS if that is what you are asking about. Install it on Mac.
as i wrote earlier, u dont have to downgrade to Monterey, but there is one option to create a partition and install monterey os on it, i saw on apple page - if something isnt updated to latest mac os version that is an option - and if lots of space on HD ofc.
I literally didn't have to change anything. I just had to quit rectangle as it was hijacking my shortcut for the pricecheck. Ctrl + Alt + D worked straight away after that.

You can do that. I have a second test partition I setup using an Apple support page. The problem with that is you have to boot into one or the other. You canāt have both going.
You can now though - by using UTM. You can create a virtual Mac (even PPC) and install what ever OS you want in that. Put that on a second monitor and now you have 2 Mac systems with whatever OS you want to run on them š

I could not get the pre made PPC UTM to work but everything else does.
Plus UTM is free. I would not use it for running Windows games at all. They even say that themselves. You can run a Windows VM on it just fine but Iād use VMware Fusion player Pro for that - itās free.
UTM is also handy if you like arcade games. There is a program called M.A.M.E which has a Mac port. I run it in a Mac VM because games sometimes lock up in it. I can play Frogger, Dig Dug, Galaga, Pac-man, Donkey Kong and so-on. Itās very cool.
Yes - although sometimes you have to do the whole 40+GB to get the update to run. Let us know how testing goes. An educated guess is theyāll be similar but the Mac client has graphics glitches as well that the WS doesnāt.

Merging accounts can be sometimes be tricky if you accidentally do it the wrong direction but if against all odds seems like you've lost all your characters, support can help you get back on tracks.
Note to self: buy more than 16 gigs of ram even at an absurd premium.

Considering that memory is shared with the GPU, it's less than it sounds like.
Memory is freaking expensive on a Mac. Should have the option to upgrade like a Windows system does.
The premiums are so insane I though I would be better off buying a new mac in a year or two, crazy.
There's some good technical reasons to solder memory and storage, but it sucks from an incremental standpoint.
Better off buying as much disk, cpu and memory as you can initially. Itās painfully upfront but you survive. I probably went overboard with 64GB. 32GB is probably enough. They should also bump the base from 8 to 16GB.
Honestly I didn't buy it with a gaming intention and until now it was more than enough, the 16 gb.
All they need to do is enable clipboard sharing from gfn -> localhost and I'll be gucci for years š

Can you run overlays in GFN ?
Not exactly sure what you mean, but the steam overlay is there for example.
If you can use an overlay there may be an app that can read the item details you need. Most of those are Windows based though, not for Mac. There is an OverWolf overlay that does price check for example. It wouldnāt work ā¦unless you can get it running via WS, PK or Crossover then maybe it could be possible š¤
Honestly I broke today, I think it's time to get rid of the steam client. How do I get PoE working through WS (or Whiskey works for me too)?

Just found the WS message there, I did have a different engine and went with the RC1 revision engine, working so far, game is installing right now after test run
Steam is busted. The standalone native client has issues but there is a workaround or two.
Best solution is to use one of the alternative methods, such as WS, PK, Crossover or GPTK outlined in pinned messages.
Just wondering, two questions:
- Does native mac APT work when running the WS version of PoE?
- Does the WS version of PoB work better than the Mac version (run through instructions in https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3009944) - I notice a decent number of generally annoying bugs in this version of PoB, where cursor selection doesn't work correctly, along with just general issues with colours and occasional crashes as well. In the SS, I click on the red dot, and that is where my cursor ends up, particularly annoying when trying to edit text yourself without directly copy + pasting
The down arrow also doesn't move my cursor down to where it should be, seems as if only the up arrow works in moving up - generally really annoying
Yes to both those. Thereās a pinned message about both š Ditch the Mac port of PoB. Definitely get the Windows version. Everything will work as it is supposed to. You can use WS instead of PK for PoB.
If the game crashes on start up, check the renderer setting in the ini file first as it may get overwritten. If that is ok then you need to try a different engine (which you can do in the Tools tab of the Advanced menu).

Quick note, can I just install the windows version of PoB in the same wrapper as PoE? or do I need to make a seperate WS wrapper?
The pobfrontend powering the third party packaging of PoB on Linux and macOS isn't great with cursor positioning.
PoB proper is way better at this, especially when around unicode in the future.

Is the resolution in options static ? POE will use whatever it thinks your monitor/video card is capable of. If there is no option to change it you might be able to do so manually in the ini file.
That screen looks ok to me š¤·š¼āāļø Maybe reboot system and fire up POE again and see if that helps š¤ Iād go to HO or run a map and see how you go. The FPS should be decent and no more suffering login/update challenges at least.

FPS is definitely better in outdoor maps, but still stutters a bit, though definitely not as frequently
no dropping below 10 fps like I used to
Maybe play with the other graphics options and the networking settings and see if those make any difference. What video resolution are you used to getting ?

Take a lot at the pinned messages. There are multiple options to move off the steam and standalone clients. Wineskin, portingkit, GPTK or via Crossover

It isnāt 40GB of memory, itās 40GB of space. That is the Content.ggpk file. Only need to do that once. It is near the end of the setup for WS.

Is it necessary for the render to be DirectX? If there is a conditional Vulcan or Metal, do they need to be changed?
Yes the renderer needs to be Directx12. It will crash otherwise.
You canāt use Vulkan on Mac afaik. You can use Directx11 with a different engine I believe but performance sucks. Stick with DirectX12.
The game may crash on startup the first time. This is because it may overwrite the file. If it crashes, go check the file and update the entry if it isnāt Directx12.

I found it in users/<user>/, but there is My Games folder in the Documents folder itself. Maybe I need to run PoE at least once for this?

the folder should be created at install time as far as I know. You could try running POE. It will crash for sure.

With WS you get back multi-threading plus all the usual options. The resolution might be different, depending on what the windows client sees your GPU as.
How much ram in your Macbook Air ? With 8GB you will not get 40FPS. You will likely need to have everything set to minimum, but you can experiment now. Login should be smooth and updates should run normally. No more work arounds.

The native MacOS standalone client can run (you can't use it via Windows) BUT it has several old and new issues. It crashes every time there is an update. The workaround is unreliable. On top of that the native client is FPS capped. You can't get above 60FPS. In addition to that it also has graphics issues that sometimes makes you think you are in a disco (and that's not even the worst one). So I would say no - don't go back to any of the native Mac options - Steam or the MacOS standalone. GGG aren't going to fix anything - it's been 3 weeks now and they've done absolutely nothing. We as players have to had to figure out our own workarounds. That tells you something about GGG's attitude towards their players and their capabilities to provide any resemblance of technical support. For goodness sake don't support them by buying stuff until they do fix something. Maybe the message will sink in when everyone does that.
Not sure how much FPS you will get bu the WS setup should provide a far more stable experience.

If you know of other Mac users trying to suffer through Steam or Standalone Mac client you know where to point them. Make sure they check the pinned messages.
There are, at last count, 4 different ways to setup the Windows version of POE on a Mac - WS, PK (portingkit - similar to WS), Apple's GPTK (whch is what I use). All free. Then there is Crossover, which also works, but you have to buy that. It all depends on what players are comfortable using. Oddly enough some players can't use one or more options. They are stuck with eitehr the Steam or the MacOS standalone (which is the lesser of the 2 evils).

Yeah online filter is an option too. if you have custom sounds put them in the same folder as the ini folder and they should then work properly. If you want to use your own filter file then place it in the same folder as the ini file.

I play on the Russian client, so I will translate the settings through a translator, so the names may not match
I launched it on low settings, resolution 1650x1080, but I set the rendering resolution to 77% (1293x808)
In the settings, I turned off Dynamic Particle Cropping so that it does not blur the image during drops (I do not like playing with a blurry picture)
In the city, I had 30-40 FPS, which is great compared to the Steam version - there was a maximum of 10-15
On a map without mobs, I have 60 FPS, when mobs appear somewhere around 30-40. There were drops to 10 FPS when Eater mobs appeared near the altar, but these are trifles - they quickly passed. Overall, the client works much better than in Steam - FPS is higher and more stable
I play on a MacBook Air m1 with 8 GB, so I set the settings to low - I feel if I raise the FPS it will be lower, and I don't want that - I have a clear enough picture to see all the effects, attacks and the like)
I play on Hexblast, I think it is important in terms of fps output
In addition, many textures are still loading, I think the situation will be even better with time

There are several alternatives to steam. The most reliable one to date is by using a Wineskin (WS) wrapper to run the Windows POE client on a Mac. You will get 60FPS in HO. Depending on how juiced your maps are you will get 40FPS at least. As @prime dust mentioned, on a Macbook Air with Eater mobs it can dip to 10FPS momentarily. On an M1 Pro you should do better than that, especially if you have more than 8GB of memory.
Several players have switched to the WS method in the past few days. You can see the threads. Take a look at the pinned messages on how to setup either WS, PK, GPTK - all free applications. You can also use Crossover if you already own it.
You can also setup the windows version of PoB in any of the alternatives. It works why better than the Mac port of it. You can also use native Mac version of APT with the WS,PK, GPTK or Crossover setup (you do not need to put APT in a wrapper).
There is a post of the APT forum about this. You need to go into settings -> Accessibility and turn off accessibility and turn it back on I think.
Also - give it a serious think about getting off the Steam client and improving your FPS.

You could use portingkit. Some players have tried it and it didn't work but it was fine for me. There is a pinned post on how to set it up if you need it. It wil lwork waaayyyy better than steam. Don't you have to play the "how many attempts to login .." with steam as well in it's current state ?

The last entry on page 17 as well. Last but not least In order to use Awakened PoE Trade as an app, instead of running from Terminal, which is crashing right on start, do the following in Terminal:
sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Awakened\ PoE\ Trade.app
and
codesign --force --deep --sign - /Applications/Awakened\ PoE\ Trade.app
Then, make sure Awakened PoE Trade is added in the list in Settings -> Privacy and Security -> Accessibility. If it is added automatically via running the app, remove it from the list and add it manually.

Itās a translator, whereas VMware is an emulator. Performance of a translator will always beat an emulator

That's elevating with sudo to administrator rights. It takes your user password you use to log in.
You won't see anything while typing as it doesn't want to show how long your password is. Type blindly and hit Enter.
Once it is done go check the ini file is correctly set to DirectX12 as per guide. Then launch game. If it crashes recheck file. It might have been overwritten.
Use same username and password you use for standalone.

No. You open the file to check the setting. If itās correct hit the Launch button
Step 10 gives you the complete path to the ini file.

Your online filter will work. If you use a filter file and custom sounds put them in the same folder as ini file.
Once you have everything working you can remove the standalone version. There is a pinned message how to do so. You can also remove steam install but I donāt use steam so canāt help with that.
I think youāll notice better FPS now too.

This may be due to the engine you used. You can change it and try it again or you could setup using Wineskin (WS) instead. portingkit seems a bit hit and miss, though it worked for me
The WS setup is in pinned messages. It also has a set of videos you can follow.
You will need to install Homebrew first if you do not have it installed in your system. If you do just follow the 11 step guide and use the videos for reference.
Note: The engine in the guide and the video is what I have. Yours may not be the same. It may show you an engine with rc in the name. You can select that one.
Homebrew Install - execute all 3 commands. Then follow the WS setup guide and videos
@lilac trail I might have asked before about this, but maybe your guides would be suitable to put on the wiki in the more opinionated Guide namespace? Videos may need external hosting, but the text and all that should be good.

on native macos client i try to set 720p resolution in configfile with readonly mode and it doesn't change but poe still changes resolution to 919p(fits in windowed mode between dock and menubar)

Hey any ppl here still having performance issues since the graphic update GGG made in January ? Last time I tried to play (last season) I couldn't pass the act 10 due the framerate issues (got like 15fps during the whole act + freezes)

GGG have not fixed the current issues let alone older ones. Recommend you switch to one of the alternative methods on pinned messages, such as Wineskin (WS) for waaayyy better performance and stability.

Could be a number of things. POE not fully installed ( a wrapper by itself wonāt work), the wrong PathofExile executable was chosen for install, the engine used isnāt compatible with your system (you can change that) or the renderer_type is not set correctly (it can be overwritten first time you start).

Use WS11WineCX64Bit23.7.1_D3DMetal-v1.1 I think that is the one I used and in the video (for WS) but should be same for portingkit..
You donāt have to do a full re-install to change engines. There is a configuration menu you can use. If you started over again that doesnāt hurt either.
The rc one should also work with portingkit. It did not for me, which is why I used the D3D one

Is this in regard to portingkit or WS install ? For WS most players seem to only get 4 options. If you look at the pinned guide I've listed the 2 most common that work. If you don't have the D3DMetal one as an option use the rc1 which is shown there (and highlighted above). That should work for your WS install.

You're joking right ? Both the steam and the standalone versions are busted, and likely won't be fixed. That's why there are 4 pinned messages on alternative options to get you going in POE again. The FPS running the alts is also better. There are workarounds for the standalone but with each patch released you would need to do the workaround again and sometimes the workaround that used to work no longer does. I mean you can continue to smash your head against the wall or use one of the pinned alts.
@lilac trail which method would you recommend for the best fps, I can use crossover if it would be the best or just follow one of your pinned messages ?

If you own Crossover I would use it. You could buy it (TOM23 for a 20% discount) but WS or PK run just about anything you need and they are free if you don't already have Crossover (CXPatcher is optional). Crossover does spare you somewhat from the setup steps for WS or PK. GPTK is what I use but that involves a lot more setup than is reasonable given the other apps exist.
TBH I did not noticed much of a difference in FPS between the 4 options. They will all certainly give you higher FPS than the mac steam and standalone (these are actually FPS capped which is a dirty little secret). The alts are more stable and won't give you update grief. Go with WS or PK if not Crossover.
The only downside is that the WINE based apps don't seem to detect GPU as well, so your game resolution may be slightly lower. Given POE graphics aren't all the amazing anyway this isn't an issue for me. It's certainly a better experience than the GGG provided clients. You should be able to run with your existing or higher settings settings using any of the alternatives.

That is going to depend somewhat on system specs. I can run at around 45FPS on an M1 MBP Max with 64GB
An M2 or M3 with less memory will do better. Someone had 85FPS in HO. 60FPS in maps might be possible then.

I kinda expected it would crash. Likely 2 reasons. It doesnāt like the engine used and/or it doesnāt like the D3DMetal option selected in the Advanced menu with that engine.
You can try a few things. Keep the engine but deselected the D3D to metal option. Then change config to DirectX12 and see if it runs then.
DirectX12 would be better but not end of world with DirectX11 unless performance is horrible.

Gotta step out for a bit. If it is still slow then need to figure out how to get DirectX12 going. This will require you to change settings a few times. Maybe also download any new engine updates. Itās a pain but once going itās far better than steam/standalone.

After you have updated try again (or course). Then try different engines. In the Change engine setting under Tools I think there is an option to download more engines.

I had no issues. On same version of CO and not using CXPatcher. Same settings. If you don't have DVXK on by mistake and the ini entry didn't change on startup (that can apparently happen sometimes) than I'm stumped as to why it would not work. If you have support with Codeweaver you could log a ticket.
Regarding WS - what engine version is it using (a screenshot would be best) and is D3D to Metal option on or off ?
Trying to replicate the issue in a VM. No guarantees of course but maybe it'll break the same way for me. At this point I'd raise a ticket with the developer via their github page. While WINE isn't a guarantee to work on every system the number of players it hasn't worked for doesn't seem normal. I have tried 4 different methods and they all worked for me, otherwise I would not have posted them. It's very very odd.
and for CO I never had any problem using it so I'm a bit lost to why it doesn't work either

FYI - the logs for test runs are in /Users/<username>/Applications/<wrapper.app>/Contents/Logs
There may be 2. Iād take a copy after each run. Don't delete them (it seems to not create anymore logs if you do). Maybe make them blank so you nknow where start and end of each test is.
Did you try the other engine with Direct3D option unchecked ?
Also in Tools -> Advanced section, select Change Engine Used. Then try to download additional engines as per the URL displayed there.
using the gptk engine doesn't allow me to uncheck the D3D to metal

Yes š Can you check something - go into the drive_c folder then Program Files (x86) - Grinding Gear Games - Path of Exile. What Path of Exile files do you see there - there should be an executable and a .tmp file I think
I already tried removing the .tmp with no success.
For exes there are Client.exe, PathOfExile.exe and PathOfExile_x64.exe.
oh and PackCheck.exe

@tulip tiger - I was able to replicate POE not starting under WS with any of the engines available (the 4 of them). Tried them with and without. the D3D to Metal option checked.
The environment is a clean install of Sonoma in a VM. I only had Rosetta, Homebrew and WS installed. When trying to use D3D it complained that requirements were not meet. When I didn't check D3D it simply failed to run POE. The renderer value was set correctly in both cases. I'm at a loss why it works for some people as per the pinned process but not others.
I have a few more tests to run. If it still doesn't work I'll report it to the developer.

Parallels and Whisky are no-goās. I posted my Whisky experience. You could try it though. Given the variation in success with apps thatās worked for me give portingkit a shot and then Whisky. Who knows, Whisky may work for you, but there were graphics issues and fps of 1 in HO for me. I never tried maps after that. There is a pinned message on how to setup portingkit.
Oh - and good luck trying to get any response out of GGG.

So ... I can replicate the issue of POE not running inside a Mac VM. It will do this if I do not have the D3D to Metal flag checked, regardless of the 4 engines to choose from and renderer set to DirectX12. That's the good news. The bad news is if I select the D3D to Metal option with any engine it gives an error that it's unsupported because I need Apple Silicon and Sonoma 14.0 or higher - which is nuts since the VM is running Sonoma and the host is an M series laptop š¤·āāļø
Might be tripping up on whatever filtered platform it's exposed as in the VM software.
Not sure if macOS has /proc/cpuinfo or some other way to query what you're running on, but it might be confused by something.

Yeap. The path should be drive_c/Program Files (x86)/Grinding Gear Games/Path of Exile/ if I remember correctly. Once you make the change open the ānewā executable and update should run properly.

See this thread - it involves using an app called BetterDisplay (it has a free and a Pro version for a small cost) to create a virtual display with settings you want. I havenāt tested but you could try it and let us know if it works. I donāt know if it will work on the free app or you have to buy the upgrade.

In general for games, one can't really tell from the outside how tricky it is, how far they've investigated to triage it, how it fares vs. other current events, etc.
There's also multiple issues at play. It's the patcher malfunction, the peeps that get proxy textures at times, the intentionally disabled engine multithreading, general performance mehness, anything else?

It can - the work around is annoying. There are multiple variations of the workaround, which makes it even more confusing. I wrote up a process that worked for me. Iāll link it.

The standalone has other issues - graphics glitches and an FPS cap but it's performance will still be better than steam and the roll-the-dice-on-login attempts.
How did it go with CO ? I was able to replicate the issue others have reported with WS when trying to use the 4 engines available. For whatever reason the WS12Wine engines are trying to use Vulkan. The one I used is a WS11Wine engine. I've asked elsewhere how to get this engine for others to try. Some have reported that rc1 engine worked for them. I don't know how given the experience I replicated. So if CO is still being stuborn there might be a possibility WS will work if you can use the WS11 based engine.
I have tested an app called BetterDisplay. You can setup a virtual monitor with this program and give it a custom resolution, amongst other things. The application is free. Follow this guide on how to setup a virtual monitor in the app - https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay/discussions/2829
You can go up to 16K (on Sequoia), that is 8K HiDPI š„¹ . You need to allow 8K+ resolutions under Settings/Displays/Overview/Additional settings in the app.
You may find you need to arrange monitors properly after turning mirroring on and off. The mouse cursor may be locked into one screen if you don't.

Note: This is for a single inbuilt monitor ! For those who are running an external monitor as well as the inbuilt monitor it is a slightly different process.
For an external monitor you need to have the virtual monitor set to mirror the main display in the app (external monitor in my case). You then need to set the virtual monitor as the main display in the app. POE will then use the virtual display and resolution that you set when you created the virtual monitor.
To stop mirroring imply turn off the mirroring setting in either the app or under System settings -> Displays for the external monitor.
Warning: Do NOT open anything except POE on the virtual monitor. MacOS remembers previous settings so when you turn mirroring off the apps you opened will only exist on the VM. They'll be invisible on the normal monitor. If this happens just set the mirror again, drag the apps to the inbuilt monitor and close them. Then turn the mirror off again. That should fix the invisible app issue.

Set virtual display resolution in System settings. Double click to make sure it sets. Then set primary display to mirror the virtual one (not the other way round !). Then check and click on the virtual monitor resolution again. Then fire up POE under WS. This should make POE see the correct resolution you set.

The WS11 is the one I used and worked. I canāt get the WS12 oneās to work. Some have, which is weird but the majority who canāt run WS tried the WS12 oneās and they didnāt. The problem is the WS11 isnāt an available download. I may have got more engines because I have portingkit installed š¤·š¼āāļø Hopefully someone tells me how to get WS11 engines so I can tell players here and they can retry WS.
I think there is an option when you uninstall PK to just uninstall PK or PK + extras. If you just uninstall PK and then reinstall PK, you should get the option during setup to choose your engine and the ability to download/ install one from the PK list which is much more extensive than the other systems. Havenāt tested, working from memory.
I think youāre right. I have had portingkit installed for a while. Itās a bit odd that WS doesnāt have a similar list. As weāve found out - not every game works with the default set provided by a fresh install of WS.

So I went and tested the theory. Completely uninstalled both PK and WS. Reinstalled WS. For engines it only showed the 4 WS12 engines that do not work with DX12 and D3D to Metal checkbox.
Then installed PK. Checked engine options in WS. Still only the 4 engine options.
I then installed POE (just the installer) which asks for an engine. Kicked that off and bingo CX11 engine is now an option for WS š
So now I just need someone who could not install POE via WS to setup a barebones PK and then try WS with the ānewā engine option, which is the one that worked for me. Hopefully POE should install and run properly for them as well. Maybe @tulip tiger can volunteer š
For all those folk who have tried setting up POE using WS but couldn't get it to run there may be a solution. The WS12 engines seemed to be the cause of the issue (why some could use these is a mystery). The WS11 Series seem to work. The problem was WS didn't have a method to download the WS11 engines. I found a solution today for this. Install PK. Then install an app - PoB or even the base POE (no need for full install. The first setup will do). Select the WS11WineCX64Bit23.7.1_D3DMetal-v1.1 engine from the drop down list. Once done go back to WS and the WS11Wine engine will now be available to use. Try installing POE via WS again with this engine (which is the one I used originally).
@grave egret , @azure ridge and perhaps @prisma rover I think were unsuccessful. If you have the strength to give it another shot, in the immortal words of Bullwinkle "This time for sure ..." š¤£

I found a way to get additional engines into WS yes. Itās a kludge but it works. I need someone who failed setting POE up with WS to give it another go with the WS11Wine engine. Itās a complete mystery why the WS12Wine engine donāt work for some but do for others. The log files indicate itās trying to load Vulkan with WS12 engine which explains why it fails but that should mean it fails for everyone, yet it does not š¤·āāļø

Congrats to @Hellfire and @tulip tiger ! Perseverance pays off š Now you can say goodbye to login and update hell. Once youāre happy with it you can delete steam and standalone (if you installed it) to free up space.
You can use the native Mac port of APT. For PoB use the Windows version via WS as well. Itās night and day.
If your resolution is locked but your system can do a higher resolution than what the game shows you in options (itās grayed out) you can use the BetterDisplay (BD) fix I posted yesterday.
Last but not least, if you run into the ācannot overwrite ā¦ā message when patch updating see the fix I posted for that too.

new info: i have another sign of successful login&play with native client
so i want to run it 1280x720 but it won't save it and runs windowed mode fit all free space between macos menubar and dock, so I've created apple command to resize poeclient and have to use it every time, but when after one of unsuccessful tries to login I run poe and it is in 1280x720 mode it logins fine

Why not use the Windows client options though. Found a fix to incorrect engine yesterday. A number of players that could not run WS before now can with new process. Better FPS, no login hassles, updates smooth. Higher resolution if you have the system to do so too.
Hmm, I might have to install the Windows client and see how well it fares.
It feels a bit sad to abandon the One True Client tho.

There is an option to unhide folders on a Mac. The key combo is cmd+shift+. (yes a period) I donāt think any of the directories (folders) you need are hidden though.
The PathofExileInstaller.exe is downloaded by logging into the website, clicking on the PC icon in the upper right hand side and downloading the Windows installer file. Itās not large (22mb ?). That file will go to your downloads folder.
Since this is a fresh install of WS you are going to need to install portingkit as well to get the correct engine. Otherwise the setup will not work.
Follow the first 8 steps of the portingkit setup guide (not beyond that). You can download portingkit from portingkit.com
@lilac trail Interesting thing - my production_Config.ini is three bytes with only a BOM inside.
Primary thing I diverged with was that I planted my old PC Content.ggpk in the drive_c to avoid having to patch it.
Created itself with a failed launch, so all good.

Donāt forget there are also a bunch of videos that take you through the install steps as well. Link to those should be part of the pinned message on WS setup.
I think even if you didnāt circumvent the ggpk piece the initial ini is blank. It canāt really populate until you launch the game. You can always edit and put the renderer option in before launching. It may or may not get overwritten. I think I mention that in the guide. A bit of a pain but ok as long as you are aware of the behaviour.
Game ran, could kind of map a bit, slightly better than macOS standalone I think.

u can see threads by the hover over the mac-os channel, atm we have zero active threads, check the other channels and u will see it :)
so u can go directly to a thread that way, and when u join a thread u can see when something is added to it, u can see it like it was a channel of its own
The discoverability of threads is a bit meh, as they don't show up prominently and hide themselves in the sidebar even from followers after a while.

ok, for 5 times in a row successful logins and loadings native poe with algorithm: run steam poe, run predefined apple resize command for poe app at 1280x720, press login, you see low poly lods/polygons of templar that means it won't load so just close the window and start again - should be at 1280x720 that means it was successful, login, normal templar, play, normal loading screen, farm maps
How many times do you have to do that before you get a successful login ? Do you have to run the game at 1280x720 -that isnāt a great resolution. You should post the script or commands used in case someone else wants to use this method instead of the other options.

True but if it is just the game resolution that should work for everyone regardless of system (though that low a resolution may cause other issues. I know my cursor in POE gets cut in half if I make the screen 3800x2160 for some reason).
@plucky swallow I forget, how much RAM did you have on your machine?
Smells like there may be by far not enough (V)RAM and a smaller window means slightly less usage from render targets.
Maybe check the stats on F1 to see if/how much is used.

Is GGG active on X. There sure arenāt on Reddit (not that I blame them) and no-one responds to forum posts. Still quite a number of players asking for an update. Thought maybe itās better to go to X. I hate going there given who owns it, plus they shutdown my favourite Twitter client so I havenāt been there since the purchase. It would be nice to see some sort of announcement. Workaround are not meant to be permanent.

The signal value on X is probably not super high, considering the kind of kneejerk responses the platform lends itself to; hard to have a discussion or focused thread.
Not sure how active you're in the forum thread, but it might help describe succinctly how dire the situation is and the extent of workarounds you need to do, with new and returning players having quite a hurdle to get over, if at all.

There are several posts on the official forum pleading for some sort of update. They arenāt crazy rants either. Some players have been along for the ride since closed beta.
I mean ultimately itās just a game but look at the community that has grown up around it. People has invested personal time and money. The least a company can do is tilt their head and acknowledge when players are impacted as severely as the last league. If GGG canāt cope with the current environments how on earth are they going to effectively manage 2 games once POE 2 is released š¬
i think that it isnt GGG that is the problem, i am afraid that it is apple that have a system that is not compatible with normal gaming-programming, well i guess also apple arent easy to get any info out of, to help the programmers, or something like that.

Itās only partly an Apple issue. It all began around 3.17.4 and and the release of a new OS. Itās become progressively worse. 8 leagues is more than enough time to sort something out. Thatās on GGG

Just saw a comment on a GGG forum to my post about the wiki. TLDR - they donāt want to bootcamp (so Intel) and they arenāt going to use game portingkit. GGG should apparently learn GPTK (so they clearly have no clue). When you have people like that around GGG canāt win and a post to a gaming forum seems a waste of good energy š¤

All the tools to build a game for Appleās platform are free. There are some bits and pieces you pay for if needed. If you put a game on the App Store Apple take a cut of the price. Steam, Epic and others do the same, so thatās nothing new. Since POE is free 30% of 0 is still zero so GGG could post their game there. Iām not a developer so Iāve no idea all the nuances of the App Store but I expect it has certain requirements a company needs to meet (just like if you want to use the Sony or XBox platforms). GGG may not be able to or want to comply with those.
The other aspect is Apple want you to use their eco system - which revolves around Metal - think of it as the equivalent of DirectX and other game development tools. If you have a Reddit account join the r/macgaming channel. There is some interesting reading there about Metal vs DirectX and why Apple do not support things like Vulkan (MK on Apple). Hishnash does a great job of explaining the technology on there š
Next up is Appleās history of either deprecating or dropping things altogether (32 bit for example). Apple sometimes give advanced warning and sometimes not. When Apple dropped support for 32-bit apps and games it did not go down well in the gaming community. While some might have been ok, a lot of game developers were left high and dry with games that were now completely unusable. The TLDR - Apple burned the trust bridge and have never been able to rebuild it.
Last but not least in this steaming bowl of porridge is a simple fact of market economics. The market for games on Mac is abysmal (itās fine on iOS and iPAD). There are almost more games on Linux than Macs. Given that hardly anyone is going to build a game on that platform. Blizzard is the most recent glaring example. They did not release a Mac client for D4. They certainly have the $$$ to do so but clearly made the call not to.
So given that it becomes a chicken and egg then - no-one build a game, therefore no developers with the skills. No-one learns the skills because there arenāt many game companies building Mac games, because ā¦..you get the picture. Plus the Apple platform lacks some of the features DirectX has had for a while, such as Ray tracing (though I believe Metal has an equivalent, but again hardly anyone uses it so itās effectively non-existent.).
This is where GGG (Tencent) are caught at the moment. They clearly donāt have the in-house resources to deal with Mac. I donāt know why they feel they can offer a Mac client given that. Tencent would probably have the resources but I think the agreement is Tencent look after China and GGG the rest of the world and never shall the 2 sets of resources meet. That seems pretty clear.
And they canāt hire the resources (probably not for lack of trying) . I donāt know where they post for jobs but I bet there isnāt a posting up for a Mac developer, or if there is, itās so old it has cobwebs š¤£
when you lack skills you try to do less work by saying of ānot gaming platformā, not supported by os; the whole idea of programming is to make whatever you want where ever you want, itās todayās gamedev consists of people that buy assets and tune them in unreal engine, thatās why frostbite engine trashed as there are no competent developer in dice to support the engine what most do is making 3d shiny objects and scenes that even 4090 barely runs at 30 fps
interesting part is that indie devs making for mac, I guess because they donāt have investors to count only money

since devs bought out by publishers they instantly stop making macos games
making for macos is good investment in terms audience attitude and optimization as itās fine fps on mac then there should be no problems on windows
and yea, the old port to intelmac that i am using, it was made during some short years when mac used intel, and some games were fast to test that, and i think they wont jump on the silicon mac train, i think that would cost too much, to hire new programmers and so on - thanks a lot for the detailed explain, and i know i am not good at explaining - but this confirm my thoughts

About mac and gaming development on the platform
GPTK is Appleās attempt to encourage developers to make a native port for the Mac. It is supposed to āshowā if a game will run. While it does that, there is still development work to be done and no-one is going to do that work when they can get a better return via Windows, Xbox, PS5 and so on. Plus until the most recent release of GPTK ray tracing wasnāt even a thing, so no-one that used ray tracing was going to even entertain the thought.
Oh and guess what - the M series didnāt support ray tracing - I think it is in M3 but not M2. If Apple canāt get there stuff together on these things why do they expect others to just blindly jump in.
To cap it off - ray tracing in GPTK is only available using v2.0 if you are also running Sequioa - a beta product. No-one is going to run beta products just to take advantage of that feature. I donāt know who is running the game development platform over at Apple but they seem to be putting the cart before the horse š¤

If you want to play with Sequoia without impacting the primary partition on your system create a VM in UTM and load Sequoia into it. Easiest way to do that.

Hi there, I'm sorry to bother but I am playing poe on a Apple M1 Max (32gb memory) macbook and I have a really though time with lag. Is there any suggested settings or file changes I can use to alleviate things?
On normal OSes, Ctrl-V pastes, Ctrl-C copies.

That depends on a few things. Lag can be due to ISP connection speed, WiFi or Ethernet, router and/or game settings. Have you verified your connection and ISP are all running without issues ? What are configured settings you are using for POE (including network) and in where are you suffering lag - HO, Heist, Maps and so on.
On the diagnostic panel on the F1 key you can see some bars and timings that may suggest what is going on.
may be network mode can help in options
i can show the settings i use in poe options, and still i have low fps in fights, M1 max, 32 gb ram, mac studio, Monterey OS - poe mac native standalone

Textures have several detail levels, each half the size of the other. The GPU when drawing a pixel picks a level that closely matches the magnification/minification of the pixel.
In bilinear filtering, it picks a level and interpolates inside it.
In trilinear filtering, it picks two levels, interpolates inside each and then blends between both based on how good a fit they are.
In anisotropic filtering, it considers that triangles can be at an angle against the camera, looking in multiple places in the texture based on the slope.
Trilinear is essentially free, low anisotropic filtering is probably fine, higher anisotropic filtering does a bit more work.
The quality impact it has is that triangles that extend inwards or outwards along the camera direction look crisper.

Itās not even a rounding error. On steam I think there are more Linux than Mac users. Mac account for less than 15% of the PC market, maybe less. Also - look at Appleās history - theyāve had 3 architecture changes at least, and every one of those has resulted in completely dead app and games. Would you want to make a game for the Mac given that.

Guys, I have been unable play the game from steam client on my Mac M1, if I download the standalone version, will I be able to play the game on my mac and will I be able to login with the same credentials?
MacOS has the same standalone/steam connection like PC PoE1 has. You can follow existing guides to associate a Standalone login with a Steam account.
If you have a PC standalone login already, you can use that as-is.

In short, you log into the website with Steam, and then associate an email and password with it in your account settings.
If something goes wrong or if you're uncertain, you could email support to sort out the mess.
You should check out the pinned messages section. It has a number of references and a link to a wiki on how to connect to POE without the issues steam and the standalone currently have.

hello together...i guess you talked alot about the current issue with Login-Problems on Macs etc. I tried out the guide to use "CrossOver". With that done, the Login now works fine. But ingame i do often have Network-Crashes. Does anyone have the same issue and mb a solution?

Settings are fine. If you are crashing in-game it's probably a game issue, especially if it is happening in a specific place like Heist. You could look on GGG forum and see if anyone else has a similar issue. You can press FN+F1 to activate the activity monitor and see what FPS, Latency and other metrics are at the time. Might lead to a clue.

I canāt take the credit for the solution. I came across it in a forum post I think. It wasnāt explained very well so I polished it up so it was a little easier to follow and then pinned it here. Saves others digging for it elsewhere.
I might start playing again but having to rebuild my characters every time plus having to recreate the atlas passive trees 3 times is NOT motivating. The least GGG could do is give us a way to export the settings. I have them (or had them) in the planner on maxroll but those are almost useless given the changes made to the atlas.
I have 1 build that survived untouched (itās probably my favourite so thatās good). The whole point of playing standard is not having to start from scratch every 3 months š¤Ø

Interesting. Iāve played every Diablo release (yes I am that old). D4 is a little rough around the edges but improving all the time. Unlike POE it has a mode to skip the campaign after you have completed it again. This is nice. Vessel of Hatred is an add-on being released in October.
As @Unifer notes you have to have Crossover or I believe it will also run in Wineskinserver and/or portingkit. Itās a nice break from POE when you need one. Itās also double XP at the moment. And if you have never played it - go check out Inarius vs Lilith on YouTube. One of the best cinematics ever (and no it isnāt a spoiler).

I believe the usual glitches this league are still there, the PC client still seems to be the most robust approach.
(Sorry for the late reply) I am lagging hard whenever I activate any game content that spawns in enemies, I can't even do heists because I'm just playing at 2FPS. Not sure if its network, it seems mostly like performance.

Do you guys know how to make awakened poe trade work in game ? It does launch (either from the console or from the app) but when i hit the shortcuts to view item price etc, it doesn't work
