literally build it yourself, install node & npm, download the sourcecode as zip, open a terminal in the unzipped "ExilenceNextApp" folder, type npm install wait till its finished its thing, type npm run smoke-build-mac and you should have your app.
(i would build it for you, but you can only build for macOS on macOS)

Yup on an M1 MBA with 16gigs ram. Plays pretty well for me. You’ll need to get used to the body heating up tho
They'll hand me a 8gig pro one idk if the ram difference will make any performance impact

The fan is actually engaged whereas no other regular strain (hello, 70 open chrome tabs) even makes it audible. I wouldn’t call it noisy

Unless there's a severe design fault, thermal throttling and shutdown safeties exist to keep it from outright killing itself.
Lifetime in general of electronic components may be shortened by running them hot, but that's more of a gradual thing.
90° is still hot for a notebook of that price...
Air anything isn't quite designed for sustained high-power loads, it leans towards weight, size, and silence.
While M1 is an improvement in most ways, the form factor of the Air is still fairly limiting.
There are very silent and powerful fans in today's world, it's even possible to replace old copper-piped cooling systems with liquid or gas based ones but it all depends on the choices of the manufacturer
It's now possible to put advanced cooling systems even to mobile phones, the cooling solutions themselves are not that expensive anymore like in the old days
They usually not giving much care about the cooling intentionally. They want their devices to have a lifespan and want people to pay repair prices or buy new ones when their semiconductors melt from heat

they're the exact same processor actually (aside from the 7 core GPU in the base model Air), just a different cooling solution. Air is passively cooled, Pro has a small fan
Ahh, excellent point. Fwiw though, that pro stays silent until I play PoE or Remote Desktop to my Pc. Civ 6 didn’t even seem to make the fan audible

there's actually a mod you can perform on the Air (adding a thermal pad) that'll upgrade it to near-Pro thermal performance. bottom case gets a lot hotter though, laptop desk recommended

I also recommend replacing the Apple's thermal paste with Kryonaut and putting some extra to other hotspots to help better dissipating the heat to the bottom case.
- put it over something metal while using it, wooden or plastic surfaces will cause it to heat up more becaure they are not dissipating the heat as much as metal ones do.
- I do not know if it's possible in MacOS but I also recommend disabling all the thermal throttling on your notebook.

I have run PoE on an M1 iMac. The builtin temp sensors never get above 130F (55C), even though it sits in a warm sunny spot (unfortunately). The fan runs, but it's basically inaudible over the game sounds.

Could be network related, could be a lack of capacity for something. I recommend you talk to GGG about it as this place is community talk. Most we can do is speculate and guess.

As it's not an official PoB thing, it's up to whomever packages pobfrontend or whatever people use these days.
The changes should apply rather cleanly, there's not anything changed around the actual runtime this time.

Depending on how your variations of PoB are built, it's quite likely that you need to download a fresh copy of it from whomever prepared it.

I'd assume that the dev version expects that you'd close the client, git pull and reopen to get an update
since the updates mechanism in the pob client itself is based on github releases, rather than git commits

If you're using the prebuilt pobfrontend things, you may have wait for whomever does them, not sure if they modify the proper PoB to make it fit.

You would have to raise such questions with the people that prepare the variants like pobfrontend, from what I can see pobfrontend auto-builds weekly.
The most up-to-date way would probably be to run the proper Windows version of PoB via Wine, not sure if the instructions in the pinned message still work.

As always, be careful about running software you obtain from the internet.
Also note that current PoB is 2.10.0 with the 3.16 v3 skill tree, but 2.9.0 is better than nothing.
There was a new skill tree released recently after the original 3.16 JSON, integrated into PoB 2.10.0
2.9.0 has the first one.

If you have a version that runs on macOS, you should be able to substitute most of the contents from the Windows download and re-apply the changes that need to be done.
I think pobfrontend outlines the changes in the readme, but you're likely to have to do some surgery.
If you've got something that's running the Windows version directly via Wine or similar tools, that'll Just Work if it can actually run it.

also they said they can choose characters - you can't get to the character select screen at all if servers are down
There's been some reports on this (possibly reposts), there's no clear cause to it.
It could be related to lack of VRAM and the load screen rapidly trying to fit too much data in there, or some connectivity problems to instance servers.

your problem on that machine is mostly the (lack of) GPU -- you're running on 7 year old integrated graphics

I'm running on a 2013 Mac pro. Fixed it up with a nicer gpu so my issues were non existent. Hope it helps

The M1 has a completely different CPU vendor and instruction set. PoE is not yet ported to that Apple Silicon, so there's the built-in Rosetta2 translation layer in macOS that tries to translate from Intel x86_64 to Apple's instruction set, but it's not fully featured.
Some people use the thirdparty CrossOver software to run the Windows PC version.
So im currently downloading the steam version. If this isnt working either i'd have to use this crossOver ?

The character select screen appears to show only shadows - several characters are invisible save for their weapons.
And when I try to load into a game, I get spinning gears forever. I assume it has to do with the textures not loading properly.
I'm using High Sierra. 10.13.6
Those look like the placeholder textures that it keeps around until the proper ones have streamed in, and which I assume it'll use if the real ones can't fit.
I strongly suspect that you peeps running into this are kind of falling off the minspec end of things when it comes to VRAM.

Considering that the game won't go above Medium if you've got 4 GB, one gig may be asking quite a lot.
Minspec on Steam for NV and AMD cards are series that shipped with 1-2 GB, but I think they're chosen mostly because of the shader models supported.

i am on catalina, on poe-page it told they recommend that OS on mac, or they wrote half a year ago... so i upgraded my mac to that one, the os i had didnt work (and now i refuse to upgrade to big sur, cause i am afraid that would give me problems on poe, and my mac is complaining every day it wants to upgrade, and i have no idea how to turn that off) xD
The macOS version of PoE requires 10.15 as minimum version, won't start on anything earlier. Didn't notice anything weird on 11 on my Hackintosh.
The Windows PC version of PoE assumedly runs on whatever macOS that translation software like CrossOver runs on.

yeah, I tried poe on mac in the first few days, and it was rough when it tried to drive a retina display, and didn't have a way to downscale at the time iirc
flat 60fps in town and blood aquaducts, and a crash to desktop. So... mixed
seems capped - presumably the screen can do 120hz, but that's fine, flat 60 is 100% playable for whatever I need

the one I've got is a little above the base model (32 GB, 10/16 CPU/GPU cores) but I suspect you'll get most of the same performance

Yeah, top model. I haven't really played with it, and certainly not pushed hard, but an alch & go map with default settings was pegged at 60fps, no fluctuations

Was not able to go above 60 fps either. Not sure how to uncap. But it was really stable at 60 fps. Had medium to low settings. Not sure about resolution but it looked sharp.

The macOS PoE client has a slider for fixed render resolution, changing the internal resolution akin to dynamic resolution on Windows.

i dont have the renderer option like that on mac version, and on resolution i have "windowed", vsynk disabled and i made foreground fps cap on 30 cause low graphic on integrated old macmini
Hey Guys, can some one tell me pls where to install Neversinkfilter on a Mac? One of my Friends started yesterday and he don't have the Folders Documents/My Games /Path of Exile
There is a button in Options -> Game to open the item filter directory in Finder.
Otherwise, it's in the home directory under Library/Application Support/Path of Exile/Preferences/ItemFilters.
The game also supports syncing filters through the Path of Exile user account.
The options for resolution scaling are at the bottom of the Options -> Graphics pane and it seems like they have changed since I last looked.
Now they're more similar to the PC, there is a slider that lets you set a fixed downscaling amount relative to the full physical resolution the window/fullscreen is using. It will internally render the 3D in a lower resolution and scale that up to the display resolution while keeping the UI crisp.
If you wish to change the actual monitor resolution you use the macOS display control panel.
I had to turn Dynamic Resolution off. It put my game in a super low resolution even though I had 60 fps.

i was just testing the different parameters to make it playable for me, to start with the screen was just a blur when mobs came, so i think this saved me, even if it is more pixelated now

yeah so overall after some more testing the game runs pretty well
leaving resolution factor unchecked will also provide more visual details that will adjust if they need to be toned down for more performance
but its stuck at 60 frames, only if you really force it it might go to the 50s

u mean with macbook or imac? i use mac-mini, and that one dont have any built-in screen, it is a pc normal screen i use (and keyboard and gaming-mouse, not mac thingys), i hope that will work the same with new mac-mini. For me PoE start in windowed and i can chose what size on window, or if i want fullscreen, and when i chose fullscreen it cannot change back to windowed (i have to restart game if i want that again). Then i have to cmd+tab to see discord. But i have old OS, catalina.
Sry but i dont know what "native resolution" means, but maybe that is the case for me, cause i dont have any numbers on options, it still tell it is on "windowed" mode.
A digital display has a specific native resolution where there's physical pixels at exactly the right spacing at a 1:1 ratio.
Using any other resolution has to scale the image to fit the raster of the screen, either in the driver or in the monitor hardware.
Path of Exile on Windows has the choice of resolution in fullscreen, from the native resolution the monitor supports down to like 800x600.
Path of Exile on macOS instead favours running the UI at native resolution and dynamically (or less dynamically depending on choice) drawing the game at a lower resolution and scaling it up.
so dynamically is when i can change the window size on "windowed" mode, and native is when i do the fullscreen (i use the dot in the left up corner then) and i checked the options now, yea it changed to "fullscreen" when i did that, hmm, i guess if i change back in the options to windowed i get that back - oh i havent figured that out yet - yayy! Yes i can, thanks, had not thought of that.
So on options i have no number-resolutions at all, only windowed and fullscreen. And i guess that will be the same with newer OS and mac then.

No, the native in that case would be the external display. Just curious what the performance would look like on a 1440p monitor instead of the near 4k resolution the macbooks use.

If you look at the performance graphs (F1) you can see frame timing for CPU and GPU in red and blue. From those numbers you can estimate the full framerate you could run at if you weren't capped by display synchronization.
Like if you're always below 10ms, that's 1000 [milliseconds per second] / 10 [milliseconds per frame] == 100 [frames per second].
Not exactly as ruining game at 120 can be harder than 60x2 at higher FPS more bottlenecks start to appear from CPU Cache to Ram latency for example

In general if your frame time is within budget, you tend to hit budget.
60 FPS needs frame every 16.66 MS so if your CPU and GPU can do less than that then you have head some headroom
Just a note some FPS limiters will set frame time for CPU or GPU to be exact needed 2 hit that FPS limit

macOS client can sync account filters, they show up in your dropdown list in the client.
The button to open the directory in Finder also works if you wish to drop regular filters in there.

and the "default" one is buggy, not useful

reporting in: The game runs great on my brand new MBProMax! It did crash entering lioneye's watch though, with no error reporting dialogue to send in.
The Windows version has (at least historically) had some sort of auto-upload of crash minidumps, not sure if the Mac client has an analogue.
You should probably report it on the forum with hardware info and whatnot.

I don't have any direct familiarity with performance on the first-gen M1 systems, but graphics performance roughly doubled from there to M1 Pro, and doubles again in M1 Max. anecdotally it easily hits 60 fps (capped) at full native resolution

Update to anybody curious, my M1 Max 14" (32gpu) did amazingly playing some scourged maps / general mildly juiced mapping on a trip I took recently. Just remember to bring along a mouse 🙂 Trackpad gaming is suboptimal.

Hmm seemed to get better after playing for a bit. At first it crashed every couple minutes of play, then after a full zone, then it seemed to mostly resolve itself. Maybe it was just an issue for a fresh install?

The problem for me was to figure out how to use it, cause i sometimes want to see all on ground as well, to pick up white rings and amulets for the scourge. I figured that out as well, i think it was alt key. (havent played for some weeks now, i am building in minecraft sry)
To add a new filter like neversink, you have to login on the poe page, and add it there, it was a bit tricky for me to figure out.

Just wanted to post another data point from myself, a happy MacBook Air M1 user. PoE runs amazingly for me on this Air, compared to my old Windows gaming laptop (6+ years old at this point). So glad the devs have included support for Macs.

Quite off topic for the channel, but there are some services like pastebinp.com that proxy pastebin pastes for unfortunate regions. PoB supports this so you could try changing the dropdown and domain in PoB when inporting.
anyone having the client crash on start when opening via steam?

The patch last night introduced a crash bug with changing areas.
The subsequent hotfix claims to fix that problem.
Hotfix is executables only, so should be a small download.
This is a crash on startup before getting to character selection or login. Didn’t happen before the hotfix only after
Make sure to report it properly, otherwise it may not be known.
stand alone client crashes on startup before login as well. poe was working on imac before update. client quitting unexpectedly/crashing seems to be pretty common after some googling, though only resolution ive seen is either a PoE or macOS update.

Just tested, there's three ways that work fine for me on 11.6.
- press the regular green Maximize button in the window corner;
- Window -> Enter Full Screen;
- Options -> Graphics -> Display Settings -> Mode: Fullscreen
Doing so should put it on a separate desktop covering the whole screen, as is customary with fullscreen on macOS.

Note that if you're trying to use the GGPK from the torrent, it needs to be put in place after the patch downtime 3h before launch.

The game runs at the resolution you've configured your monitor at. 3D content scales down according to the resolution scaling slider at the bottom of the graphics settings while the UI is always full resolution.
Sounds like a font issue. I am not sure how Poe on macos is handled, but it probably can't find an appropriate font with those characters.
On Linux or windows, generally just installing a font that has them fixes it. However, I would assume you already have one since you understand the language. It might need one more similar to Poe's font, or for you to somehow switch which font Poe is using. Not sure how people do that usually.

I'm trying to run custom filter sounds that aren't built into PoE (like the maven sound pack) but for some reason I am unable to here the sounds and I just here the default drop sounds. Does anyone else have this issue?
I have the same issue. I have the mp3 sounds in the same folder as the filter file. Also checked the file itself and it references the sound files correctly. Where are they supposed to be so the filter plays the correct custom sounds ?

There are no official builds of community PoB for macOS. There are third party packaging together with pobfrontend that may or may not be current and might work.

The trade website is the only thing I’ve used for both Mac and PC. The advanced filtering it does is really good. Haven’t had a need for any helpers or addons at this point.

@blissful plume I run it smoothly on my m1 max 14" laptop. Runs smoothly for moderate juice, although I don't typically get up to delirium+breach levels.
some small tricks help like lowering the "resolution" setting of the whole display, it looks perfectly fine, but poe doesn't try rendering in 4k (or whatever native screen is) and lower instead. There's still no resolution control in the game on osx, which is a big limitation in adjusting things
native res is ~3000x1800 on 14", ~3400x2200 on 16". not quite 4k but well on the way
"lots". I figured they wouldn't use actual 4k, thanks for actual numbers
but yeah, basic gameplay is fine, haven't gone too hard at juicing. Also it's like a $4k laptop, and it's on par with a $1.5k gaming pc. 🙂
dynamic scaling helps but yeah, I wish they'd expose some more options, because rendering at 100% is kind of overkill
or use an external @1x monitor, that works too
but the whole appeal of the laptop is that I can play on the couch watchin' tv! And ignoring the side project coding I could be doing!

Good news, I have a workaround.
If you point out the sound files with an absolute path in the item filter it loads and uses them correctly.
That is, instead of:
CustomAlertSound "Brittleknee_6veryvaluable.mp3"
you have
CustomAlertSound "/Users/zao/sounds/Brittleknee_6veryvaluable.mp3"
Or if you want to leave them where they are, even something like:
CustomAlertSound "/Users/zao/Library/ApplicationSupport/Path of Exile/Preferences/ItemFilters/Brittleknee_6veryvaluable.mp3"
In short, the client is able to load and play sounds, it just doesn't seem to be looking in the correct place for them.

I just moved all programs and files from my old intel mac over to my M1 mac and it automagic works. Thunderbolt connection and the move program in the start setup. Maybe works via the rosetta, i guess some of it, cause when i clicked on steam it wanted to start rosetta, and after that has not asked for it again. All works (poe and pob) and i am happy. :)
So i crashed a couple of times when enter a portal to the rogue harbour. I think it is maybe a mac problem to crash in portals some times. Then i changed the login gateway and it worked fine, and now when i started to write here i crashed standing on the rogue harbour again xD
Maybe it is just a problem now between the leagues.
do you have an SSD or one of those hybrid drives? I have a theory the loading crashes are from hybrid drives, but it's only a theory
unlikely, fusion drive is pretty transparent to software
a crash on loading or hanging out in rogue harbour is likely to be a graphics issue being caused by another player's mtx -- it can get pretty busy in there

Not sure about proper controller support, but you can use Steam's Controller Configurations to manually assign button input. I've been playing POE all this while with a controller, with the analogs emulating mouse movement. It's wonky at best and certain stuffs still require you to reach your keyboard. You can search for Fangzone's POE in the Steam Controller Configurations' import tab. I've mapped out most of the essentials in the game, but you can tweak the layout to suit your playstyle and save it as your own. Use mine as reference
Thanks, I am aware of the steam provided controller mappings. I created a mapping for steam controller a couple of years ago, was quite build specific. Flask handling was way better than the current controller support 🙂 Main hurdles were item pickup and inventory management, but it was wonky as well. I am transitioning to a mac and the game plays well but I am not the biggest fan of mouse on mac. Hopefully controller support gets ported to mac, or maybe I try my hand again at mapping. I thought I read somewhere that beta was only PC but the full support will come to mac as well, but it seems that is not the case.

Some people need controllers to mitigate RSI and other medical problems, PoE's experience with them has been poor in the past requiring third party programs to translate controller actions into mouse and keyboard actions.
The new PC controller interface (which is the console one pretty much) offers a significantly better experience for controller users and it'd be really neat if it comes to macOS eventually.
As someone who can't play PoE anymore due to arm problems from mouse use, I care deeply about this 😄

Yeah, I've seen a lot of that. Also lots of "stripes". It doesn't happen in every map, but it's common to see at least some kind of glitch. The main one seems to be polygons getting stretched to infinity in some direction.
I was going to ask which graphics API you were using but not much choice on macOS 😄

any way to unlock the 60fps limit when playing on an m1 mac? looks like vsync refuses to be switched off and i wonder if this is some weird interplay between rosetta and the compositor
I can turn vsync off without an issue in options. I have front fps (or whatever it's called) set to 240fps and background to 120fps. It doesn't matter - fps will not go above 60fps - in either hideout or elsewhere. What is this fu@#$% by GGG - I don't think it's a MacOS limitation. I'm running on an M1 Max with 64gb of shared memory and all the other good stuff so the system can cope with a much higher fps. It's using Apple ProMotion which I think limits to 120Hz. Maybe this is what is limiting to 60fps ?
I don't think it's ProMotion. I've tried so many things but haven't been able to get above 60fps on my 144hz external monitor. Sure does suck--fingers crossed this is fixed when they release the native version.......when?

Haven't tested many other games but I have tried Eve online (which does run native) and I get 120fps
Oh I did not realize that. A native version - I hope they remember it’ll have to work on the M1 and not just the old Intel based chipset. Mind you it probably won’t matter. I’m guessing not before late 2024.
I did some testing on fps this morning with some interesting results. If I run the game via a Parallels based Windows VM I can squeak out around 73fps - if I’m standing still. If I’m in hideout or maps it never gets above 55, maybe 60fps if I’m lucky.
If I use the “native” client I cannot go above 60fps period. I need to play around with some more testing but something is definitely squirrely 😀
Huh that's surprising that the 60-cap isn't on parallels. If I were to hazard a guess for what's going on, I think something's up with however Rosetta is translating things. I hope we at least get some news soon about the native M1 version soon, seeing as it's been over a year since we heard anything
I was surprised to so I need to check the settings in the options for POE in case there was a difference there. On the Mac side I've not touched any power saver settings. I don't want to change too much in case I actually get near 120fps. I won't know what made it work if I do. Stay tuned ...
Attached are 2 screenshots. One is when game is running in a Parallels VM (the first one), the other in the native Mac client. Vsync is disabled in both. Both run in windows mode. The only real difference is one is running in Windows and the other under MacOS.
In the Parallels instance I can get at least 100fps standing still. If I move it dropped to around 53fps. When moving from the Submerged passage to The Ledge the fps actually went up to 170+fps for a few seconds.
In the native MacOS client fps never goes above 60fps anywhere. When I move it drops to 50fps or less.
I also turned off all the battery settings on the mac. It made no difference. This suggests that there is something funky interaction between the Mac display drivers and POE (Parallels uses it's own graphics driver I believe). It would seem we're stuck until a fix is put in - either by Apple or GGG. Playing via a vm is not really an option. the fps might be higher but the latency is brutal (which is definitely a POE problem , not a Mac or Parallels issue)
I hadn’t heard of a hard lock with ProMotion. I’m on the latest release of Monterey so if there was a problem I assume it is fixed now

for me M1 Max works fine with poe, some graphic bugs but i think all macs have that, i think rosetta works in the background but i dont see it
i dont get the path of building to work to import from poe site, trying to import my char, cannot find the way to import it, it show my charnames, but after that i get stuck. I have made this earlier a year ago on my old mac. And i did install the latest version i found now from may. Either i dont understand or something is lacking.

The graphics glitches come and go. Game is generally playable. The fps is a POE issue. Proved that the other day. Further proved it by playing D3 on my M1 MacBook Pro at 100+ fps. Raised a bug with GGG. I don’t hold much hope of getting it fixed anytime soon. MacOS community is pretty small. If you can live with 60 or less fps then it’s playable.

I had much lower fps on my earlier macmini (intel year 2014 model), for me 60 fps is a great improvement. And the graphic glitches is a bit fun, if u see it on the positive humoristic way. 😜
what is the difference between 60 and 100 fps? i guess not all screens will show that big difference in quality? or am i wrong. I have a 60hz screen.
Generally it’s a smoother gameplay experience but given I’ve never gone above 60fps in POE I couldn’t say. You’ll never miss what you have never had I guess. It’s still annoying to have such an artificial limit. It isn’t there on the windows version. Luckily it’s a free game so I guess we’ll grin and bear it.

No - it’s a problem with POE. I can play D3 using the native Mac client at 120+fps on my M1 MacBook Pro. I can also get above 100 fps if I play the game in a windows virtual machine using Parallels. GGG need to fix it.

I'm really think that fps should be limited to monitor limitation (same as HZ), yes, having more will give effect of faster updating/more recent frames but that's small improvement compared to stability
They just added DX12 support that is "I guess" coming from new Xbox tech upgrade
better have 1% low fps at 60fps
this week apple announced Metal3 which adds more methods from vulkan and dx12 to be implemented
So as you are right to complain that the POE port on Mac is not perfect to GGG
at the same time you can Complain to Apple for not supporting something that works even on Windows XP
i guess we will se more ports and better performance with pure dx12/vulkan engines

that’s a good opportunity to use metal and make native apps, why would anyone choose a hard way when there is some third party api, os that can be used? i recall that some devs started to write that they support mac and in instructions ask to install bootcamp and windows.
Gamedev now in a state when devs paid but trying to do less work as much as possible
@valid heath After a crash course in device creation, indeed smells like it's either an explicit timing choice on PoE's side or some translation/default problem in MoltenVK as it interfaces with Metal.
MTKView for example has preferredFramesPerSecond defaulting to 60, but that's a higher level concept I think.

apple silicon also has nice gpu, it just software should be optimized for it and the easiest and cheapest way is to use metal api

It finally landed in MoltenVK 19 days ago in PR 1596, so once PoE uses that version of MoltenVK, it'll probably be resolved.

The key functionality needed for APT is exfiltration from PoE to the user's machine, something which the documentation doesn't seem to explicitly indicate is there.

i recommend lower your settings to lower resolution like 1280x720 or smth
or lower the graphics settings in game to better performance
There's third party bundles of Path of Building that tend to lag behind a bit in version but might work, I think there's some resources pinned in the channel.
Official PoB community fork has no macOS or Linux releases currently, there's only third party attempts via pobfrontend.
You can use both POB and Awakened POE for MacOS on both Intel and Apple silicon (I’m running them on a M1 MacBook Pro).
You CANNOT do above 60 fps using the MacOS client. Don’t bother changing any settings. They won’t work. There is a bug submission with GGG but no idea when or if they will resolve it.
There’s is one method to get a higher frame rate. You have to use a windows virtual machine via Parallels (don’t know if Virtualbox will also work). I’ve tested this and it works (get about 100fps) but the lag time on the virtual machine makes it unplayable this way. POE doesn’t seem to like running on a VM either (either another bug or something on server side that doesn’t like them).
I get in several ways in delve:"The client generator is out of sync with the client. Please create a new instance" but in delve cntr + click doesn't create new instance. Someone knows a way to fix it?

never had these problems before. Just with the recent patch
with 8gb it may switch to ssd and with newest patch some bugs related to memory leaks leading to crashes
its really bad man. :D Played for 1 hour trading and doing crafts, started a map and crashed on 3 portals in a row now,.
I start the game, join my HO, click on the portal to the map and back to the desktop I go :D
yeah it started crashing as if the performance wasn't bad already :/
3.18.1c hotfix 2 (earlier today) has reverted the recent texture loading work, it might have positive impact on you crashing/slow peeps.

Yes but to be fair they’re also present on Windows too. Still waiting for them to acknowledge the fps cap issue on Macs though. They could at least acknowledge it.

If i install the game through steam on an external SSD on my Windows Desktop, will i be able to use that installer to play on my mac or do i need to install it again?
I do not think that a Steam Library is reusable between OS types.
While the game data files happen to be identical, the depot for the executables is different and is only installed on the OS that it belongs on.
(that is, on Windows you're gonna have a directory of the content + win64 binaries, and on macOS the content + macOS binaries)
Standalone won't help either as the GGPK format for macOS and Windows is a different version.

Packcheck isn't made by GGG ? I just assumed it was since it's in the same folder as the ggpk and client (for windows)

There's been some third party defragmenters but packcheck itself was a GGG tool.
No idea why it's not ported to macOS but it might be related to that the GGPK format itself is a variation.
I'd expect the MacOS file is not immune to the same fragmentation as the windows version but maybe it is. It's about 1GB less in size than the Windows version. Would be academically interesting to know why there's that much of a difference. Maybe graphics files windows has to cater for but MacOS does not.
The GGPK format itself differs in that paths are UTF-32LE rather than UTF-16LE.
I haven't looked at what files are actually included in the Standalone distribution on Windows vs. macOS but I believe the bundles should be the same.
I actually got the ggpk file size the wrong way round. On my MacOS (the first screenshot) the ggpk is larger than the WindowsOS ggpk (which is running in a Win 11 ARM VM but that shouldn't matter).
Finder uses power-of-ten gigs, not power-of-two gigs btw.
Windows installation there is ~32.55 mac-gigs.
So still a difference but a relatively small one that could be explained by some file fragmentation perhaps.

Hard-assumes that all file entries in the file are present in the directory tree, figure is only actual file contents, omitting all the directory structure, free blocks and other metadata.
Nice ! Files sizes are roughly same order of magnitude then. If I thought there was something to discover about the differences I’d look more closely but I don’t think there’s any ROI to doing so now.
Squinting at it, I'd reckon it's that it doesn't contain the D3D11 shadercache.
It's approximately 401 MiB in a Steam installation.
Yep, only difference in the fileset is that Windows has ShaderCacheD3D11.packed/*.
Everything else matches in path and file size.
Amusingly enough, macOS PoE ships with not only Vulkan shaders but also D3D12 ones 😄

Still waiting for a response to FPS cap issue reported. A quick search of forum has this reported in February this year followed by 2 reports in June. Dead silence on all of them, but they can respond to other tickets just fine. Asked support for an update and know what they said - check the Known issues for Mac - for which there is exactly one still outstanding graphics issue OR raised a ticket, for which there are already 3 ....maybe I should start raising them here in the ggg-tracker or via reddit instead. Very disappointing handling by GGG.
And just to highlight how little the Mac community is considered afaik the loading screen issue also affected Mac based clients and yet GGG's note said to provide DX12 data to them - no mention of how to get performance data to them when it occurs on a Mac. I wonder if anyone from GGG reads this discord thread or are we just flapping in the wind ... 🤔

I'm not 100% certain that my guess about the extension was right by the way, when hand-editing the value I couldn't get it to behave differently but that might be due to not having a susceptible machine to begin with.
It's up to GGG to determine if it's the extension or something else is the limiting factor. Not sure how hard it may be to track down but surely they could devote some time to it. It's disappointing that they can't even be bothered to acknowledge the report. Apparently there are more important things to respond to like a bug in a helmet that makes the head invisible. While that's funny, it hardly affects gameplay, unlike an artificial fps cap
Does this suggest there's a "potential" work around ? I have two Intel based macs I can experiment with, though the game would be slow on them so I might not be able to get to or above the 60fps but I can give it a try if there is something to try

I can't get more than 30FPS on my M1 Pro.
It's a crying shame.
To be fair, it's like 30-40fps with everything toned down to low. But that's just not even remotely playable.
Not user-accessible, I hand-patched the executable with candidate values and launched it to the login screen on a machine mangled enough to run unsigned code.
As the machine has no real GPU, kind of hard to test presentation problems when it doesn't do much more than a fistful of frames a second ^_^
I put this whole thing aside as the effort I'd spend on doing something that I really don't know how to do properly is better spent on all the other projects.
I get 55-60 fps on a M1 MAX Macbook Pro with 64GB RAM. It's pretty reasonable game play but I can get over 100fps on D3, which is also a 10 year old game and I guarantee they have not fiddled with graphics drivers in quite some time. That's makes me even madder at GGG. The tech has been there for a long long time.
