I hear from people who play with the controller UI on PC that it's not that bad. One thing to remember is that player population and trade availability on the consoles are a fair bit slimmer, and leagues start almost a week later.
Not sure how the Mac experience is overall, or if they even have the controller UI or if that's a Windows only thing.
This doesn’t work, for me. The issue is the app just crashes and soon as you try to launch it. It happens if you use the terminal as well so there is no work around.

What site are you using to value your items?
I've never used a controller I just use mouse and keyboard on my mac. Controller seems weird for this kind of game to me but idk. As for mac performance It works fine for the most part but I think it does struggle more when you get into endgame content. It's much more laggy/jumpy at times however I wonder if thats because the game isnt optimized for my apple silicon rather than the old intel macs. I can't wait to see how it performs in PoE 2 because its quite powerful otherwise and I assume PoE 2 will be built around the new Macs.
I honestly don't know if they would consider shipping on macs at all for that, given the abandonment that they have for 1 on the platform and how 2 seems to be a step up in requirements.
I guess they might feel a need to thanks to selling MTX to current players, but I wouldn't necessarily assume that they would.
If they haven't had the engineers or resources to improve the client up to now, it's not like it's going to improve up to launch and post-launch.

Hey y'all, I was wondering what the difference was between playing on Mac the way the pinned message is saying it and just using the steam client? I run my Poe on the steam client thru my m2 pro and it doesn't seem to have performance issues?
I'm new, play on Mac M1, I notice some slowdown in towns or when I first leave a town into a zone, but the loading screens even on the SSD are like 30+ seconds
Clean shader cache, after that you first time get long loading screen but after some times it disapier

@lilac trail solution is easy in some place where you add APT to Accessibility need add Terminal or Iterm, after that my solution with running APT from console start working

Hi! Just fixed one of my issues getting into the game (old version of Steam didn’t have the right… something or other for MacPro, so needed new installer), but now I’m at the game play issue of controls. I’m used to WASD or arrows for movement and QWER(T) for weapons, and I can’t for the life of me figure out how to config that in the options.
So I’m left using my track pad to maneuver, and yet Q still takes my PC to the cursor AND THEN attacks, and I have to hold shift to stay put at melee. Help 😅😭
PoE 1 don't work with WASD move
Sef is doing a decent job with joy2key mapping to play with gamepad before the new UI.
You should be able to configure individual skill binds to attack in place by interacting with the skill icon and click the option.
In general tho, its one of those things you can fight uphill towards, but it really doesn't lend itself well to playing in any but the ordained manner.
Soooo... I can say, after 5 maps, on M3max(40) via Crossover® PoE work much better, more stable FPS, not full CPU load, time to enter to cart smaller

I'd personally recommend trying to adopt the type of play that the client naturally encourages in regular or controller mode; rather than try to shoehorn it into an interaction style that the game really doesn't have.

Woo, I'm one of the cool kids, APT crashed when trying to go to Accessibility Settings.
PoE doesn't seem to remember to use Full Screen mode when I re-open the game even after I saved the settings.

When run from the Terminal, it pops the prompt about accessibility settings; where if you allow Terminal to "control your computer", it runs properly the next time.
When run as an Application and it prompts for accessibility settings, it pops the prompt and then crashes regardless of if it's allowed.
I didn't dig deeper, just mentioned it to Snos and went on with my day as I don't have any interest in reading JS code 😄
I'm using Wineskin + POB portable version, works perfectly.
When I run it via the terminal command in iTERM it crashes out the same way as it does via the app itself 🤔 I have both iTERM and the App set correctly in accessibility. I don’t know if it’s related to Sonoma or not but it’s entirely frustrating 🙃
My first run in whatever is before Sonoma seemed to work, while Sonoma had the above.
Do you have any guide on how you did it or something?
Download portingkit (portingkit.com). Install Windows version of PoB in that. You now have PoB running on a Mac 👍

Wine-based solutions is going to get real messy when the beta runtime ships as live.
If you've got a throw-away installation that currently works, try checking the beta checkbox in PoB's Options and upgrading; see for me how much it fails to run afterwards?
You can pay for Crossover if you’d prefer. The only difference between the 2 is that portingkit is free

I don't know which channel would be right channel but is there anyone who uses awakened poe trade with m1 ?
I use POE via GPTK setup. Get about 50-55fps in HO. Lower in-game but generally 35-45. The maximum you can get via the Mac client itself is the mid 50’s. For some reason the Mac client is capped at 60fps, unlike the Windows version.
On running PoE in Wine, someone shared me this amusing tale the other day:

Is it currently better to run the game through standalone Rosetta 2 app or through Crossover with GPTK?
I assume you mean is it better to run the Mac client, such as it is, or run POE via GPTK instead, using the Windows standalone.
Game wise there is little difference in performance between them so it comes down to personal preference to a large degree. The Mac client is a pain whenever a patch is released if you are on Sonoma, or the version prior to that (still works properly on Monterey). Apple made some changes to file and folder permissions that causes issues. There is a pinned message outlining the workaround for it. GGG won’t provide an update to the client, so we are stuck with it as is. There is also a hard cap on FPS in the Mac client. You cannot go above 60FPS.
Using the GPTK method does not have either of these issues, so personally I use that. There is a pinned message on how to setup POE using GPTK.
I personally could not get POE to run properly via Crossover. It will install but performance is awful. Some folk in this forum (Gordon) are running POE via Crossover (not Crossover+GPTK) successfully so it might be an option if you already own a copy. I would not attempt it via CXPatcher+Crossover or Whisky+Crossover. Both of these use an old version of Crossover.
Yeah I was playing through Steam on Mac but was wondering if just using the newest Crossover release would be better. I believe Crossover now has GPTK.
Crossover has components of GPTK now that’s true - but you have to have a licensed copy to use it after the 2 week trial. GPTK itself on the other hand is completely free.
There is another potential option - GeForce Now. If you have a game library from Steam, GOG or another one that escapes me (Epic maybe) you can use this service. It’s basically a VM. It has a free as well as paid tiers.
I do already have Crossover. Would totally use GeForce now if I had access to ethernet but unfortunately I have to play over 5ghz wifi.

Looks like GGG servers are puking again. I can't even download the latest patch for a Windows box in the last 2 days. The Windows section of this forum has seen some interesting conversations concerning EU servers. Why is it so hard to have reliable servers, at least for patches ....

That's normal for the standalone Mac client. Not sure about via Steam though. Probably is.
@fossil dock You said POE was working well for you with Crossover and Msync. How did you get it to work? I get the error “vk::device::createquery pool unique” when I launch the game.
R U using Vulkan or DX12 ? That looks like a Vulkan issue. Change it in the config file if currently using Vulkan

In the patcher as it has downloaded some 40 megs and get around to patch, or after patching the whole bunch of gigs (8.84 GiB for me)?
I had to remove the Path of Exile.app in Application Support to get it to get past crashing on fork+exec on the small patch.
Still patching so don't know if it actually launches after that.

Anyone running Diablo4 via GPTK atm. Yes I know this is the POE channel but we all play other games. I'm having an issue reinstalling battle.net. I just hangs, never completes in terminal. Tried re-installing multiple times, same thing. I've already asked multile times in the Apple Gaming wiki. Seems pretty quite over there 🤷♂️ (which is a polite way of saying it's useless and no-one is responding ...🤣 )
I know that one of the pinned things is a bit off and I couldn't be arsed validating which one it was.
I was also dead tired about to go to bed, and kind of meant to communicate that the path I took wasn't quite the same.
On D4 - I'd be a bit afraid to run that kind of online-only game from a hostile vendor via unorthodox runtimes.
I have D4 running on an older version of Sonoma on a separate partition, so it is likely an update from one company or the other has somehow fried things. I like your description of the vendor. You have to wonder but then again GGG aren't what they used to be either. It seems to happen to a lot of companies once they get past a certain threshold. D4 was and still is a disappointment. So much promise, so little delivered. I really hope GGG don't fall down that hole.

Honestly I would not use Whisky. There is nothing wrong with it, however it is no longer maintained by the author and it uses an outdated version of Crossover. You would be better off setting up via GPTK. There is a pinned message in this channel how to do that. Alternatively you could use Crossover if you can purchase it. I use GPTK. I couldn’t get Crossover to work on my system but others have.
Yeah I tried crossover and just didn’t enjoy it but thanks man definitely will get gtpk to work , atleast when I got whisky installed it was running thought gptk
You’ll need to do the DX12 setting in the config file with GPTK but everything else should be good. I use Crossover with D4 because you can no longer use GPTK with D4. Blizzard did something with battle.net and only Crossover has the smarts built in to make it work, so there is a time and place for both

Author is in maintenance mode. Whisky is using an outdated version of Crossover. It means any fixes for games in later releases won’t be in Whisky. I try not to make things up, except for fishing secrets 😁

Just an FYI if anyone is looking for this file - the Library directly is hidden. You need to unhide it to find the file. For the standalone it is where zao has indicated. Don't know the steam path since don't use steam.
If anyone is using GPTK or Crossover or portingkit or Wineskin then the file will be in the virtual C drive in the directory it is usually stored in if it were a real Windows install
and to follow up on this: easiest way to get there is Finder : Go > Go to Folder… > type or paste in ~/Library/Application Support/Path of Exile/Preferences

You use the Windows version with GPTK. This will allow you to go above the 60 FPS limit the Mac stand alone client has.
It may also mean less graphics issues. Performance wise I don’t see much of a difference.
You will also avoid the weird patch update issue that anyone using Sonoma or one version of MacOS earlier encounter (there is a pinned message on that in this thread).

It still has graphics kinks since the update. I’m running it via GPTK. It isn’t a game killer but it’s annoying. The patch notes claim DX12 is now out of beta. How many years was that again 😳

Game is definitely worse after patch. Harvest has weird display effects it never used to have. If someone trades with me and I have to get back to hideout first the loading screen takes far longer than it used to. The only consistency in this game is GGG’s inability to release a non-dramatic patch 🤣

If they are going to make one, it could explain the lack of hoots given by that they somehow intend to do a big client drop eventually.

Honestly - No I don’t think there will be any update to the current Mac client, which as we all know is essentially hot garbage.
They’ll claim that the current client will work with POE 2, just like it does for POE because game impacting issues are just noise from some pesky minor user base who should get a real (Windows) based computer.
I don’t play console but from what I’ve read it’s a joke as well. The only reason people put up with it is because it’s free I think.
I don’t know about the rest of this discord but the reddit channel is dead these days. Not even rants about games design, patches or mind numbingly boring and repetitive game play. Did everyone go play something else and if so what cause I think I’m about to vacuum seal my account. POE just doesn’t cut it anymore for me.

yea i get some graphic issues when much is happening ingame, it gets rly slow fps i think, almost not playable sometimes, i am sad - and i have a good mac, the M1 max, if this gets worse...
I have the M1 MAX too. I'm only running POE via GPTK. I am not getting above 60FPS but I have a Studio monitor and it's refresh is 60Mhz so I don't think I can get above 60FPS even if I wanted to. The patch fiasco is annoying too. Technically that isn't GGG's fault but it is up to them to provide a fix, not have players put a kludgy fix in place because they can't be bothered to support the MAC client.
After patch I my M3 max try to fly on cooling system....

Mobile is a separate and distinct experience designed for the platform and its displays/controls, not regular PoE with a crowbar.
Also designed for more pop in/out gameplay when you've got some downtime in your life, rather than the usual PoE gameplay cycle and evolution.
I use TG Pro. It has a free version and a paid version.

No, I play from MBP M3 Max 40 GPU
now i was down on 7 fps in a fight but the heat was only 75 C, so it is something strange wtih the graphics on this patch

when no fight it tells 58 fps

Does this manage fans to kick in autoamtically at a certsain temperature or allow you to do it manually ? If not then I recommend getting TG Pro. I can kick the fans in if things get above 100c and it'll bring the temperature down fairly quickly. Than I turn fans off again
i use mac client, until this day the monterey OS has worked fine
in HO always no problem, but when you start mapping everything go bad....

in hideout i have 58 fps yea, but if a hard fight i go down to 7 now after last patch, it wasnt like that earlier at all, i was maybe down on 30-40 or so

I don't think it runs well on Crossover but I could be wrong. I think Gordon runs it via Crossover. I couldn't get it to run well on 23.7
Oh ... well good luck with that. That's essentially no-one. Maybe Larian with BG3 but I've heard even that has had a few issues, mainly with patches not being released same time as PC. If you find a decent POE equivalent that has decent support for Mac let me know

In T16 I'm getting 30-60FPS and temperature not above 85c. In a super juiced map I can see the FPS might go down some but not sure as I don't usually run juiced. I don't have the currency. My Atlsas tree is not built for pack density either. I was running corrupted T16 Rare with over 100% quant, plus 3 scarabs and a fragment and Ultimatum runs. Was pretty smooth. That isn't the same as a super juiced T16 or a Simulacrum run though.
Age doesn't matter. Having fun does. If POE isn't giving the same buzz then play something else for a bit. I'd recommend Grim Dawn, but you would need to either run it in a VM or try it via portingkit, Wineskin or Crossover. I haven't tried any of those options yet but I might if GGG keep breaking the game for non-Windows users.

It has a native Mac client yes. You have to pay for it though. It's a lot different in play style to POE. I didn't want to pay the $70-80 so I'll wait for it to go on sale

Well your Framerate is consistently in the 50's from what I can see. Mine never gets that high except in HO. Temperature is up and down depending on what is happening on screen. Is that TG Pro you are using to show temperature and I assume fan speed ?

Apparently you can also run PowerPC and SPARC too. I don't know where to get PowerPC. It would be neat to run that so if anyone is aware where to grab this from please let me know. It will also run Windows but by their own admission it won't run Windows games very well since it has no GPU virtualization.

Be more specific - r u using the native client, Crossover, GPTK or something else. What about the MacOS version and your system configuration.
Unrelated macOS tip btw, if you peeps use Java you should probably hold off on the 14.4 upgrade as Java processes have a tendency to get killed by the OS.
(also sounds like iCloud is being a bit naughty with global deletion if you remove something from a 14.4 machine)
So what's in general the best approach? I mean - having let's say MacBook pro M3 Pro: is it better to run it natively or using parallels/crossover? What way is more popular in the community?
The native client has several issues - an FPS cap of 60, a buggy patch update process (unless you are still on Monterey) and some graphics glitches that make it seem like you are in a disco.
Players have had success with GPTK and Crossover. GPTK takes a lot more effort to setup but both are viable. I couldn’t get Crossover to run well on my M1 Max with 64GB memory so I use GPTK. Others use Crossover. Neither of these options have the FPS limit or the patch update issue so they are better IMHO.
GPTK is free. There is a small cost for Crossover.
There is a pinned message in this channel that outlines how to setup POE using GPTK.
You can also use Crossover to run the Windows version of PoB instead of the Mac port, which does not work too well.
Some players have also had luck getting Awakened POE to run as well.

Unless there is a significant amount of noise raised by players on the GGG forum this will not be looked at or addressed. The number of cases opened for graphics and other issues on MacOS is like looking at the mythical Elephants graveyard. GGG don't give a rat's arse about it. You're better off using either GPTK (there is a how to pinned in this sub) or via Crossover (some have it running successfully though I couldn't get it to run for me)
gptk is not the same as porting kit?
You can try Whisky, however I wouldn't. It is using an outdated version of Wine (Wine 7.7). This is for 2 reasons. First is that GPTK only uses Wine7.7. Apple are not keeping up with WINE releases (which is now up to v9.x). Second is the developer of Whisky does not want to compete with Codeweaver (maker of Crossover) so they are no longer developing Whisky. This means that anything that has been fixed in WINE8 or WINE9 (such as better reliability for 32-bit games) won't run in Whisky.
Whisky cannot run older games at all - it is only for DX11 or DX12 (neither does GPTK), so if you are looking for a "one tool fits all" then use either portingkit (this is NOT Apple toolkit. I suspect Apple deliberately named theirs to confuse people. portingkit has been around since the days of Apple Intel), Wineskin or Crossover (currently v24.x). If you are only going to use an app for POE and nothing else than just set up GPTK as per the pinned message. It'll take around 30-45 minutes at most. It's a once and done.
@lilac trail Do you, or anyone else, use Windows-based PoB via some sort of Wine or 32-bit VM? We're getting really close to shipping the new 64-bit runtime and it'll probably brick your installations as Wine really doesn't do well when prefixes change bitness.

The normal release is 32-bit. The beta release has been 64-bit for a few months.
Soon the normal release everyone gets will be upgraded to 64-bit.
Wine prefixes are a bit weird in that they tend to be generated for a single bitness as I understand it.

Third party repackages like the macOS one from the forum has updates disabled I believe, but normal Windows:y PoB updates.
The last time I tried the new version, I needed two things: 64-bit wine prefix and one of the d3dcompiler (49?) winetricks. Those are something that Crossover might handle better.
I haven’t used the MacOS port of PoB for a long time now so I don’t remember if it auto updates or not.
Crossover might handle things better. There are two other apps that can run Windows PoB as well. Both portingkit and Wineskin. I’ve used PoB in ortingkit but not in Wineskin. It should work in all of them. I can test in portingkit. Someone else will need to test Wineskin. Good to see PoB getting 64 bit version 👍

hey guys, Im using a M3 max macbook pro, does anyone have graphics recommendation to run the game smooth and while also not draining the battery too much?
It seems like people in the Crash on launch "ERROR: Could not find dll named 'SimpleGraphic.dll'" #7413 issue had a mix of needing the compiler and needing a particular version of DXVK, based on their environment.
The new PoB has fancier shader requirements via ANGLE that some environments just don't support well enough.
I kind of expected some amount of tinkering or recreation needed for people using Wine, but also had hopes that people who use such exotic environments could figure it out among themselves 😄
@zao - I updated PoB in Crossover from 2.39.3 to 2.40.1 without an issue. I have no settings under Advanced settings active. It's as vanilla as you can get.
I tested with both an existing PoB and created a new one. The new one has a few things missing but that isn't unusual with PoB. Sometimes it does not update the cluster jewel settings properly. Apart from that everything else apepars to be working. I am assuming I'm now running the 64 bit version or am I still on 32-bit ?
If it says 2.40.1, it should be running on the new runtime unless the update managed to skip half the contents. If you don't get the green console showing when starting PoB or the Quake-style console in Ctrl+~ says SimpleGraphic v2.0, it's the new runtime.

My PoB shows exactly the same info as your screenshot, so all good. Looks like Crossover was ok with the upgrade to 64 bit without a hiccup (at least for me) on MacOS Sonoma 14.2.1

How well does Vulkan work in general?

Like, I assume that Wine somehow supports Vulkan on macOS. MoltenVK or whatnot would be an implementation detail then that I don't need to care about.

TBH I would not use the Mac based version. Run the Window version via portingkit, Wineskin or Crossover (I wouldn't use Whisky. Too many versions on WINE behind)
The more we change PoB, the higher the chance of the unofficial packages to slip behind; particularly if they patch the source.
Whisky has been intentionally kept where it is by the developer. They stated they didn't want to compete with Crossover. PoB might work in it but I haven't tried. The source code for Whisky is available, so someone could fork it and make an up to date version with WINE 9.x but no-one has done so afaik.

I'm currently 39864 in line for POE. Some of the updates look promising. Finally we get multiple Atlas passive trees and T17 maps have potential. Since I don't play league the leagure mechaics don't interest me but they don't sound too bad. Sound a bit like a reskinned Bestiary league though 🤔

Game doesn't have any built-in AFK functionality, one can normally idle forever in zones and hideouts.

What’s GFN got to do with patching. The user patches the games they own. Geforce doesn’t host POE themselves, it’s through user libraries such as Steam and GOG afaik.
wrt the GGG standalone client on GFN - whenever a patch is released their(GFN) servers often fail to update properly. You just get met with an error when logging in(to GFN)
I just switched to (GFN)steam version, it seems to not have this patching problem

Hello, since start of the new league I have very strong problems with FPS (it falling up to 1), when I’m coming in the areas with a lot of people (main areas of the act etc.), but when I m going to locations with mobs, there is no problems and everything is okay (I hadn’t such a problem at the last league). It's quite possible that the macOS client just doesn't have controller support at all.
It's slightly differently featured in other ways, so they may not have implemented it at all there; assuming the OS even supports controllers.
Recommend posting on the official GGG forum too. Might be someone there who can comment on whether this setup will work or not.
Is there a better way than right clicking each of the stupid deprecated scarabs. Clicking them 1 at a time is ridiculous if it's the only way to reveal and put scarabs back where they were. I have a few hundred. I can't imagine anyone doing this for several thousand.

Is anyone else having horrible performance issues with the new league (league issues themselves aside)? I'm talking <5 fps in blighted maps, <10 fps in white/yellow maps with minimal juice. I tried a full clean reinstall, with no difference. Everything was fine last league (and since the MacOS client went live); I used similar settings as last league, and then tried decreasing everything, to no avail. 2021 Macbook Pro M1 Max w/ 64 GB RAM.
Did you clean shader caches? I can suggest you attempt to use GPTK/Crossover to play PoE with less pain
they made some kind of change on direct x, and native mac game have been unplayable after that
D3D12 shouldn't matter for the Mac client as it's using Vulkan under the surface unless they've drastically changed things which I doubt they would.
There could be overall renderer changes or material changes that throw the macOS world off.

where is the shader cache stored for the stand alone Windows client version ? It does not seen to exist in my VM (maybe because VM does not have a GPU 🤷♂️ ). Haven't looked for it in GPTK install yet.

Perfect. Thxs. I'm using a VM for scientific testing, not playing purposes since a VM sucks for this sort of thing. Each time GGG release a new league it seems "performance" on a VM gets worse and worse. I remember being able to actually play POE on a VM on a 2016 27" iMAC with 32GB RAM just fine. Not anymore. Some of that is undoubtedly due to graphics engine updates but it's still surprising that performance is so bad in a VM now.
How bad is the macOS "build" of PoB these days and is the author responsive? Might be breaking it fairly soon.
Hmm, I gave it a try on Crossover first because I had already started a 14 day free trial the other day. Got it installed with the .exe and launched to download the patch just fine. When I try to launch, however, I get nothing. Anyone else had the same experience? Otherwise, I'll try setting things up with GPTK after all.
I've had no issues at all with PoB. Awakened POE Trade has some issues with items released in the current league and only works in windowed mode, but PoB has been totally fine, and updates with the new content releases.
What settings do you have applied to the bottle for Crossover ? @fossil dock is successfully running POE using Crossover but I couldn't make it work for went the GPTK route.
BTW - there are coupons out there for discounts on Crossover "bridgeover23" will get you a 10% discount. If anyone else knows of other valid discount coupons (and where they are posted) that give the same or larger discounts please post them here. Crossover is useful for lots of games and some Windows apps so it's worth buying if planning to run more than just POE. If just POE I'd go the GPTK rute instead

Apparently the universe is trying to convince me to quit PoE. I installed with a fresh bottle, used the settings Gordon posted above, and when I try to run, it pops up with a window checking resources for the briefest of moments, and then exits. I then tried installing through steam (also in crossover); exact same thing. Oh well, thanks for the help folks, I do appreciate it.

This isn’t updated for 3.24 as far as I can tell. The original thread has had a comment since February and the other thread referred to in the original post seems to run for some but not others and runs the 3.23 version. Is that correct or did you do your own fork and update it for 3.24 ?
If playing Std, as I do, APT at 3.23 isn’t an issue but in league it might be 🤷♂️

It would appear that GGG, Apple or both have fixed the issue that was occurring when you tried to update the MacOS client and it would puke. I just updated my MacOS client (which I’ve not done for a year) and no longer get the error message 👍

Playing league, There are some items that get errors, but overall it works pretty well
Yes. Stay on Monterey. If you want to test out Sonoma you could install UTM and run Sonoma within a VM. It works fairly well, though performance can be a but laggy.

I tried the native one this morning and it just kept crashing on startup. This seems to be a similar issue to the null issue. I suspect it is the same issue without the “normal” error message.
The fix is the same - delete the Path of Exile executable and kick off the startup again. It will run without an error. At least it did for me

The FPS on the MacOS standalone client is capped by GGG at 60FPS. You will never get above that. Why GGG did that I’ve no idea, but that is why you don’t see higher frame rates.
If you use either Crossover or GPTK you can go above that since it’s using the Windows client to run.
I don’t use the Steam client - either Mac or Windows version but I assume the Steam version of Mac client has the same weird FPS limit

I’m not sure it is updated for 3.24 but it is at least updated to 3.23

For the MacOS the refresh rate of your monitor doesn’t matter. It’s capped regardless.
It’s lazy programming basically because it takes a fair amount of effort to code otherwise (I think I posted a link on it in here somewhere 🤔)

I just tried POB v 2.34.1 on portingkit and it was ok. As soon as I updated it, or tried to update it, it will no longer run. I'm going to delete the bottle and try a completely new install. I think @Zao mentioned some WINE based apps might not like the new update. Crossover handled it just fine, but it looks like portingkit isn't happy with a direct update like I attempted
That sounds like what I historically encountered while testing this out.
In some environments indeed, you may have to make a clean installation of PoB in a fresh environment as the prefixes/bottles often can't handle a change in program bitness.
The d3dcompiler_47 problem should be history now by the way, as we now ship a copy of it with PoB.
The display is busted in portingkit. This is what I got after a fresh install in a new bottle. I'm using WineCX64Bit23.7.1-2 and Windows 11
If I increase the magnification then I get all the tree nodes but none of the connection paths are displayed (or not many of them)
So maybe someone else can get it going properly by playing with the settings in portingkit more
But it is definitely not happy - even with a new, clean bottle

There's pretty much a single shader in SGv2 PoB. It does everything from multiple textures to clipping and viewport transformations; to maximize the amount of geometry it can draw at once.

I’m guessing you were able to find the custom port option in portingkit to build a new bottle.
In PK6 I could Add Application and it let me pick the setup EXEs.
PK5 grayed everything out.
I'm not gonna care too much if there's solutions to run Windows PoB on macOS that aren't this PortingKit runtime.

In PK6 if you type a game name - say POB and it does not exist, PK6 will show you the custom port wrapper. You then install using that.
Windows POB will run in Crossover just fine, so the portingkit engine is missing something that Crossover has or does behind the scenes. I think I’ll raise a ticket with the developer and see if they come up with a fix. Have never tried POB with GPTK. May or may not run. A lot more work then PK or Crossover.
It may or may not run under Whisky (which uses WINE 7.7).

Your Mac shows an Apple logo when it finds your built-in or external startup disk. As startup continues, you should see a progress bar, with or without the Apple logo. This screen might alternate with a blank screen several times.

expect 30-50% fps decrease after some time, you can buy external fan/cooling pad to fight overheat, also you set settings for stable 70-90fps and then turn vsync on for 60 so you won't use cpu/gpu at full load and it won't heat that much
There is no fan in a Macbook Air so yes there is no airflow. These systems are designed to manage without a fan. It will run hot so it isn’t recommended to sit it on your lap. Other than that it should be fine. Use TG Pro or a similar app to see what the actual temperature is.

Nothing really. There is a browser based one but that means you have to copy and paste and exit the game to figure out pricing.

i guess it’s 10 gpu cores, but m3 should have more powerful, idk if there were any tests about difference and what is more important gpu core number or performance per gpu core; in 8c vs 32c I saw more of stability with x2-3 gains

Looking for a way to monitor my session while I’m away from desk so if someone pings me I know. Technically I could use a script to check the Client.txt file but I only know how to do that in AHK - which only runs on Windows.
If anyone knows how to get AHK scripts running in Crossover ping me (I have AHK installed but I can’t get scripts to run in it) or you have a Unix script or Apple script you can share let me know.

How do you calculate "Bow attacks fire an additional arrow" and "Bow attacks fire 2 Additional arrows" DPS properly in POB. I'm trying to see if there is a significant difference between them. There certainly is currency wise. There should be a POB discord channel but this is the only place I know to potentially ask

i've never figured that out properly. all i know is that apparently for bow builds it's generally a big upgrade. lightning arrow, tornado shot, etc

You can now shift+click to move a stack of currency into the trade window all at once. Is there an option to transfer from inventory to stash tab the same way ? It seems rather pointless if I still need to transfer 800 chaos orbs in stacks on 20 into a currency tab instead of all at once. Maybe I just missed that in the release notes ...

Anyone know how I can open a second instance of PoB via Crossover ? Seems by default you can only open 1 instance but of course in Windows you can open multiple.

That's unfortunately against ToU, actions need to be 1:1 caused by a user input to do that particular thing.

Technically possible. Easier on Windows since you can use AHK (which I suspect people used to do with flask mgmt before GGG came to their senses).
I figured I could do that. Nice to know it would work. What I’m really after is a side by side compare of passive trees. I have a build template from someone. I cannot for the life of me find where they have allocated several nodes in comparison to mine.
I use a free app called Rectangle for window placement for that: https://rectangleapp.com/
so i just make one of the instances of PoB the upper half and the other the lower half, or you could do left and right side of your screen

Note that PoB has a built-in tree compare between two trees in one build.
I create a new tree in the template, import the char over that, and compare.

OK. I have a PoB open. Compare box is checked. How do I then compare it to another build ? I'm not following your example.
I open a PoB. Then select compare. Then Manage Trees. Select Import Tree. Enter a name. For the passive tree link I tried entering a pobb address but this said it was invalid. So for passive tree link what do I put in to get the tree I want in there (which will compare to the original) ?

To save others that might have the same challenges as I did - the import link is an export of the tree you want to compare against the default build tree. Go to Manage tree (in the drop down to the left of the compare box). Select the tree that shows up there (or whichever tree in there you want to compare). Select export and then done. Then fire up the build you want to compare it to. Select Manage tree again, then Import tree. Call the new tree whateve you want. Then paste in the exported tree string and select done. Now you can compare 2 trees 🙂
Yeah, the import/export there is distinct from the pobbin/pastebin ones.
They're more like website passive tree URLs, which you could probably put in there.
Is there a way in PoB to compare the stats list on the LHS (the one that shows Offensive/Defensive stats ? When I want to look at the difference an item might make to the build it's cumbersome having to either erite the values down or take a screnshot. Can I compare two sets the same way as the tree and see the highlighted differences or am I stuck with running two instances of PoB and going cross eyed ?

Not that I'm aware of - just that if you create a custom item on the "Items" page it'll compare that against the item you currently have, and how that will affect everything
it is helpful that you can copy and item from trade and click create custom and paste it in and have the compare done very easily that way on a by-item basis, if you didn't know about that
I do use the method you mentioned. If you hover over the "new" item it will show you the differences. I guess that is why they don't really have a side by side thing. I'll just keep doing that then 👍

I've got no idea if we've ever considered build comparisons past "it's really designed for one global build at a time" - the same kind of reason why Party functionality is so sparse.
It's one of those wishlist things that are kind of in the plans for any future reimplementations on new tech.
Yes, it's a bit misleading. TBH the differences are displayed if you add the new item(s) into the build and hover over them, so I can see another type of comparison would either be superfluous or way low on a priority list. For now I'll just stick with the either reading the item tooltip or making before and after screenshots. It's all good.

Anyone know if the Atlas tree passive config name is in a file somewhere on the client side ? I have run maps a bunch of times forgetting which Atlas tree is set. If the name of the current tree was stored somewhere I could run a command to show me what that is. It would be nice if there were someway to tell when a map device slot is empty or what fragments are in it. I sometimes screw those up as well.
The selected tree is likely server-side state.
I suspected as much. There are entries in the production config file but it isn't clear what they mean, other than Atlas Tree is set to something 🤔 The codes are numeric, which I don't know if anyone knows what they stand for.
That's likely the button scancode to open the atlas tree, Ctrl+G?
The current tree is also part of the character profile in the account. You can see it. It does not however show a name indicating which of the 3 it is. Can you drag this data down as part of an API - that might work ....maybe something to add to PoB at some stage 🤔

There was talk about adding multiple trees to an API endpoint, not sure where that went.
I believe the old endpoint is supposed to take the "first" tree, but I'd have to look the chats up to tell.
The first tree would be the passive tree - or does "first" mean the first Atlas tree ? Since you can only have one Atlas passive tree active that would be nice if you could pull that down. You could tell at a glance which one it is.

The full set of trees are behind OAuth, so not even with PoB's current type of API use.
So it would be possible to pull the information if I understand what is outlined there correctly. When they say league - is that for any league or just the current running one ? I mean Std is a league for example (and all I play). This would not be very useful if it were just for Necropolis itself

In order to read the trees you need a registered OAuth application with account:league_accounts scope. I don't see anything that indicates the current one, just the full set for that league.
That's the tree JSON underpinning the tree, not any personal allocations.
The stuff people use pre-league for updating PoB and other tooling.

I didn’t have an issue updating my Mac client yesterday but that’s as far as I went. I’m running POE via GPTK. I won’t go back to the Mac client at all.

An interesting development .... I can't start POE MacOS client. It just keeps crashing out, no error msg. On the third attempt to try and start it I got this

I removed the POE executable before running the update so it has nothing to complain about. Why is it all of a sudden trying to write to a development folder - especially since this has never existed on the client afaik. Someone released the wrong update into Production at a guess 🤔
@lilac trail Executable contains development/tags/3.24.2, as opposed to the previous one that had release/tags/3.24.2.
As for what a different build profile implies, I don't know. Might enable a whole lot more stuff in the client or assume more about the environment it runs in.

I created a new ticket in the Technical forum. There are about 4. Maybe GGG take a look or maybe not 🤷♂️ No-one seems to have reported what I have but maybe I just got lucky. Someone at GGG should be paying attnetion to this. I'm gonna go post it on Reddit. That should be fun ... though then they would be able to know what my Reddit handle is and who I am in POE so maybe not ....I'll give them a day to fix it

My speculation is mostly along the benign lines of "compile a release build but with asserts to find where things go pear-shaped". I have absolutely no evidence however and don't know where to start digging.
The executable is a nice juicy 11 megs larger than the previous one, that's neat. (83 vs 94 MiB).

At least another 6 hrs before anyone even takes a look at Forum posts. So glad I have not bought anything for close to 2 years. I get issues happen but this just isn’t right. A simple test by someone at GGG once a patch is in production what have revealed there is a problem. But who cares, it’s a free game and they already have your money seems to be the prevailing philosophy.

Arakaali's Fang is separated on ninja between the foil version and regular one; with a significant difference in value and with "medium confidence" for the foil.
Pillar of the Caged God has a race reward alt-art, which greatly justifies the value bump.
The primary bug here is that the search for the alt-art entry doesn't populate the alt-art field in the query, prices agree way more if you check Alternate Art.
As for reporting, heaven knows, I just poke the author 😛

I could totally send that type of info along. I'm guessing though that the author(s) of poe.ninja would get spammed to death if there was a simple link to them. I don't really use the pricing guide all that much and I'm somewhat aware why some the pricing seems wildly out of whack with the actual trade site, but of course new players (I still consider myself new even after 6 years 😜 ) would find it somewhat confusing (as do I after all this time. I'm just a really slow learner .....)

The trade functionality is a bit brittle and relies on that it can obtain things from the PoE API correctly over the web.
I forget what goes wrong to cause that problem, but look for whether the League field up top is populated and if there's any error at the bottom, hidden away a bit.
I also forget if you need a POESESSID, and if it could be a sign that you've gotten a cloudflare challenge that prevents automation.
It could be something about Crossover's networking/certs, it could be your connection, it could be your IP address being considered suspicious, etc.
How do you use the trade feature in the Items section ? I'd be curious to try it out but I don't see the option (likely staring me in the face ....)

Hmmm - doesn't seem to work too well for a search on a Unique in weapon slot 1. Took out every parameter except 1 and it still came up blank. Removed the weighted search and just did a normal search and trade site found item. I can see it being useful while levelling, maybe not as much as you try to min-max. Still a cool feature to have though 👍
its super useful for certain things while min maxing, like jewel slots
but yeah it's not perfect
also redoing the POSSESSID fixed my problem, thanks for the ideas @proud igloo

The initial search it builds for you is great. It would take hours to do solo by hand. Narrowing it down after that is, and should be, up to the user. I'm surprised though that after I removed all mods except the one Implicit the updated search still came back with zero items. If I did a non-weighted search it returned results 🤷♂️ Probably my bad in ot understanding what a weighted search actually means ...

Does anyone have a trade search that will shown only 8mod T16 corrupted with 20% quality ? T16 corrupted with 20% is easy enough but getting 8mod maps only is a challenge and I don't want to be counting the lines for every listing to see if it's truly 8mod or not
Can't you use the "# Modifiers" pseudo field?
So many options in there. Wasn't aware of that one. Some of the prefix or suffix values are grouped, so they would count as one, not multiple. I'll put 8 in that field and see what comes out 🤞
It should count accurately, including overlapping hybrid mods.
I use those kinds of pseudos in combinations for finding items that have crafting/slamming potential.
Looks like it worked. Here is a listing that clearly has more than 8 "mods" on it but as as you mentioned, it groups the overlaps, so you get a listing with true 8mod stats.

Nope, only quantity/bundle/fulfilment. It's intended at its core to be for trading fungible items and fragments.
That means I have to ping people and ask if the maps they have are 8mod then. That's ok as long as they respond, which we know with trade can be a 50-50 chance 😬 Ah well - can't make it too easy right ?
As I understand it, the intended purpose for including maps in there is that sometimes you want to buy multiples of maps that are all interchangeable w.r.t. mods, or are interested in buying a suite of arbitrarily-modded maps for completion.
They don't really fit into that core idea of "bulk" but are there because that there's some value to it.
For more niche trades, the trade site really doesn't have them in scope and you get to enjoy the company of trading Discords and third party websites.

Some of you will be aware but some will not - Apple just release a new beta version of GPTK (2.0). Not sure if this will make POE any smoother but hopefully it doesn’t break it.
If you want to try it out (along with the beta MacOS) do it in a second partition, not your primary. I think there is a pinned message how to do so in this forum. If not I can post how-to in a day or so when I have access to a computer.
It won’t be part of Crossover or other apps till it’s stable but should be incorporated once it has a green light.

You mean you have to restart POE, not re-install I assume. There is no way to keep it alive indefinitely that I'm aware of. I've had POE shutdown on me when the lid is fully open, both in-game and in HO.

Crossing your eyes is the best you've got. In Calcs you can click hover breakdowns to force them to stay open.
The program is really not built around multiple builds in any way, even the Party tab is quite a hack.
One could envisionably implement something around item sets or skill group sets, but it's something you do way less than compare tree nodes.
Thxs. The calculations sometimes depend on items in other tabs as well so just looking at a number doesn’t tell the whole story. Technically I guess you could compare the xml file data between two builds in a text editor. That should show the differences in each tab would it not ?
Probably. It somewhat reflects the current computed state of the build, which is why stuff like pobbin's summary works as well as it does.

Is your Mac locked down by the school you are at ? I don't understand what you mean by it's bricked ? There is an error that occurs when trying to patch. There is a work around for that in the pinned messages in this channel (you remove the POE executable and then restart patching basically). You should not have to re-install the game at all.
Is this via steam or stand alone client ? If via steam you could use Geforce now - free tier. That way POE is not on your system at all, just the GFN client.

In order to use Awakened PoE Trade as an app, instead of running from Terminal, which is crashing right on start, do the following in Terminal:
sudo xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Awakened\ PoE\ Trade.app
and
codesign --force --deep --sign - /Applications/Awakened\ PoE\ Trade.app
Then, make sure Awakened PoE Trade is added in the list in Settings -> Privacy and Security -> Accessibility. If it is added automatically via running the app, remove it from the list and add it manually.

Yes. Don’t feel bad you could not get it to run. It doesn’t run for lots of people.

TAG: Install APT on Mac
OK. I have APT running on my M1 now. I did the following
Remove APT from System Settings -> Accessibility -> Awakened POE Trade
Do this by highlighting the app in Settings -> Accessibility -> Awakened POE Trade
Select the minus sign (-) at the bottom LHS
Verify visually app is no longer listed
Remove the app from Applications (usually a favourites item on LHS of a Finder window). Do this by dragging Awakened POE Trade to the rubbish bin
Clear rubbish bin. Verify visually app is no longer in app folder. You can also check by looking in Launchpad. It should not be there (it's symbol is an awakened orb)
Download the app as per the Forum posting list. Last version linked there is 3.23.10002-universal.dmg. If there is a more recent update I do not have the link
Open the dmg. Drag the app to the Applications folder
Right click icon to open (from either application folder or launchpad)
You will likely ge several error messages. 1 message will state the app is not signed. You should be able to ignore that.
The next message that may appear is the application crashing. Press ignore from the 3 options presented.
Re-open the app. This time for me it did not crash.
Start POE
Choose shift+space. This brings up the APT menu.
I have not actually tried to price anything. Been so long since I used this I can't remember how 🙂 At least it did not crash this time.

I read in the forum that some users had to remove,add,remove,add the app to accessibility at least 6 times or more before it started working. Weird but nice it is now working.
If the version correspond to league than it might not be able to price thing for Necropolis. Not an issue for me since I only play Standard.
the other bug / issue i encounter is whenever there is an update, my Steam version registers an "Update Failed - Disk Write Error". I always have to restart my computer to get it to work

I haven't looked on macOS yet, on PC there's now a fixed set of relative resolutions and a choice of upscaling algorithms.
This kind of resembles the macOS-only slider we had for render resolution before, so it might also be on macOS if NVidia's NIS has a SDK for that OS.
I’ll update the MacOS client just for giggles. I doubt it now has choices like this but I’ll post once it is done. Patch is 3.9GB 😳

I'm not sure how well the game runs. It was dog slow to start up but that may be because they also implemented a cache clear on startup I think (something in the patch notes about that)

Yeah - I'm not sure I understand the settings. 50% means less sharpness but better performance right ? Which means No Upscale should mean best graphics rendering but with a performance impact, or is it the other way round ?

I forgot to NOT delete Path of Exile before I patched so I don't know if that issue is still there or there put a fix in for it as well. The patch notes were light on details of other things they may have done.
The way this works is that the all the 2D elements are drawn at full resolution as usual. The 3D scene is drawn to an off-screen target of the possibly-lower resolution. That is then up-scaled in 2D with some naive or intelligent algorithm to full-resolution to be composited below the HUD.
The old scaling was just "bilinear filtering", which leads to a fuzzy/blocky square look. The new scaling has a different algorithm from NVidia called "NIS", which is more content-aware. This is akin to technologies like FSR and DLSS for intelligent upscaling. Pretty much all games these days have some amount of upscaling as it's just too heavy to draw naive 4K or higher in most situations.
And yes, this is a client update. They remembered macOS existed - if but for a moment 😉

PoE on macOS is similarly structured to how it's on PC. Standalone has a GGPK in v4 format and some executables, Steam has the exact same data depot as on PC together with a macOS executables depot.

awakened poe trade- no, you have to have local files, what i've managed to do is to use loot filter as it's now managable via poe website and used steam overlay for browser and trading via poe website
trade also managable via local browser if shared copy/paste buffer is enabled in gfn settings(may be by default)

Unless you want to assemble it yourself, the best bet is probably to run the Windows version under a Wine, like crossover or the other Wine-based projects.

If you already own Crossover then use it for POB, otherwise use the free app portingkit (portingkit.com). It runs the Windows version of POB perfectly. Agree regarding the Mac port - it’s too wonky. The Mac port of APT though is not bad.
Hi together i will get a m3 pro with 16gb ram next month and think about using it as poe2 gaming machine with an external gpu via thunderbolt 4 has somebody tried that out?
16 gig of RAM feels like it could be a bit small if PoE2 has richer graphics and assumedly more data than PoE1.
Not sure if they've said anything about system requirements for PC even.
No idea about external GPUs and macOS in general, I'd be surprised if normal vendors would have Metal but I'm not well versed in the Mac world.

I have access to it on the 2.42 version which I updated from the source, following instructions from this thread: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3009944. I turned on the Opt-in for Weekly Beta test Builds, reopened the app, and it has the 3.25 skill trees now.
The 2.44 Version came out like 40 minutes ago and again, updated from source following those instructions, and it's up and working on mac now.
Is anyone getting random crashes to Desktop in POE lately? I started getting them yesterday, and I'm practically getting them every time I try to go to a new zone in the campaign
Getting complete game crashes straight to Desktop (Windows) and never had any issues with PoE in the past.
So far the game crashed multiple times in:
- Act 3
- Act 4 (after defeating Piety and entering The Harvest)
- Act 5 (the Reliquary)

It used to do the same for me. The way to “fix” it is outlined in the forum post pages. You will basically repeat a number of steps till it stops crashing.
My memory is that I had to totally remove the app first. Then make sure it is not in the accessibility permissions list at all. Then reinstall the app. Go to accessibility and see if it has been added. If not add it. If it is there try to start the app. It might throw warnings or errors but hopefully not crash.
You may have to enable/remove/enable/remove/enable multiple times for it to start working. The way I first knew was it did not crash on me 😁

fps jumps from 5 to 30-40, resolution and settings doesn't matter whether it's 240p or 720p, related to cpu graph, maybe there are some work around like turning off steam overlay^ full sdcreen

Strangely, I tried to make a shortcut that would run this code to open it, and for some reason it's not able to run through Shortcuts, despite me being able to run code through other shortcuts easily. I don't get that error in terminal, so I don't really know where it comes from

We got a fair dusting of changes with the resolution scaling recently, but it's an ongoing process I reckon. Usually general perf rather than specific architectures.

I used to be able to play POE fairly well in a VM believe it or not. Now it is basically impossible. From that POV performance has declined.
At the high end of mega juicing maps, even some fairly new Windows rigs cannot run the game well.
It’s weird GGG have such a mode but can’t seem to optimise it for better performance.
There will be issues with the league. There is every league. GGG can only test things to a certain degree. They need the league to get more data to fine tune/fix things. Not too surprising.
Other than that I expect performance will be just fine. Remember though - FPS is capped for the Mac client, so you won’t see frame rates as high as a Windows system.
I was going to cover the basics of how awesome the systems in the game are for designers and a pure joy for performance engineers, but you know it all already 😄

From 3.22 I use GPTK (via Crossover), IMHO it's more FPS-stable choice, also mac version have some bugs many-many years... for example with some delve node generation.
In case of today/tomorow 3.25 start I would recommend to have both version - 'native' and GPTK one, no one kwnow what can happen with such a huge game path like 3.25

You should get at least 45-55FPS with Crossover. If you run 80% deli plus other things to juice maps that will drop, if it even runs.
As @gordon suggests don’t run POE using the native version for MacOS. It is less stable than other options.
Crossover is the easiest to setup. I use GPTK itself (there are instructions on how to in pinned messages). It’s free (Crossover is not after a 2 week trial) but a lot more work to set up.
I recently got vmware fusion so do you guys think that poe would run better through the virtual machine or not? my average fps in non-juiced maps is around 10 while in hideout it is around 30 so it is quite bad.
idk, today it's perfectly fine after patch, may be because I closed other apps, lots of other apps on the background and high memory usage let to 2-30 fps

Yeah, sadly a VM is no longer an option with POE. GPTK, Crossover, portingkit and Wineskin all work though, so plenty of options to avoid using the native client.

Don’t use the Mac port. Use the Windows version by whatever app is best for you. Crossover, portingkit and Wineskin will all work. I would suggest not using Whisky. It runs on a much earlier version of WINE than the others.
How does one get into the queue “early” ? I can literally sit in front of the desktop but never seem to get closer than several thousand 🤔
I do it constantly on PC for many leagues now, the overlay has significant performance implications.
Both the APT and TFT ones suffer.

You can start the game and when you try to login you get the "servers down for maintenance" then you just spam the login button and suddenly you're in queue

yesterday i could login from steam with my mac studio, no problems, and i sorted some stuff, but now with new patch it crashes instant when i click either on an old standard char or on a create new
redownloaded poe but still fails to load instance when trying to play on a created character. Instantly crashes when trying to make new character.
I get things happen and you can’t test everything but c’mon - this is Act 1. It has to have been tested you can get to that area. What is clear is they don’t test the Mac version.
That would suggest today’s patch introduced something to break stuff.
Clearly GGG don’t follow standard change processes of freezing changes after a certain point. This is what happens when you do …
There is a theoretical work around on the forum. Some people have said it works, others have said it didn’t work. Even a full re-install doesn’t help.
The Technical forum is not pretty reading. Two hotfixes already. PS5 players are hosed. The funny thing is a GGG staffer said they were working on a fix but it has to go through a certification process. Apparently Sony have to approve patches, but someone else also said that can be as short as an hour.
Both consoles have streamlined validation for patches, much lighter than full cert.
The whole system isn't super fit at all for the complete abomination that is PoE-style launch weekends.

Don't even joke about that. I've had direct experience with that process 🤮 I truly do not understand after 12 years why POE launches continue to be clusterfuc$%^s. It means nothing that the queue was smooth if you can't get past the first waypoint in the first Act. They are not an indy company with no budget anymore ffs. Keystone cops look more organised ....
OK. I got my MacOS client working after encountering this message. Here is what I did
launch the game by this command
open ~/Library/Application\ Support/Path\ of\ Exile/Path\ of\ Exile.app
- You should get the error message.
- Move PathofExile.app to the Trash bin
- DO NOT empty the Trash bin !
- Drag and drop PathofExile.app from the Trash bin back to ~/Library/Application\ Support/Path\ of\ Exile/
- Right click and select open (you can also try the command above again but I just did right click)
- Patch should now start. It should be the 6.9G one
- Game should then launch normally.
What MacOS are you on and what version of Crossover ?

Not pretty but it worked. It was a proposed solution in one of the forum threads. I didn't remove the redist folder as they suggested. There seems to be a range of methods that have worked for others. I don't k now why one method works for some and not others. You'd think it would work the same for everyone.
I tried another method first. In Privacy settings it kept complaining about not be ing recognised. When I said open anyway it would send me into a continuous loop between the error message and open anyway. Something in the package that GGG built is not happy

Shouldn't matter. The update will overwite what it needs to. That content ggpk is way to small for example. It means it puked during the original update.
You can remove the update.dat. Leave everything else. Technically you could remove it all but lets see how it goes without doing that first

It'd be interesting to see if it's possible to tell what attributes or other aspects of a bundle that change when roundtripping via the bin; if they're observable from userland or if they're handled out of band.
Deployment is one of those things that are the hardest to test for, as people often have old systems with accumulated cruft, preferences and state from the past and where fresh machines or development systems behave differently.
You don't get the same kind of experience during development as you tend to have a different flow for rapid iteration where you operate on a single installation without updates in-place.

I understand testing in a development environment is vastly different to the actual live environment. These issues though are surprising. If they are related to load then they could to a degree mimick that.
The whole update process seems odd. Guess what is back for me this morning ? That's right - the "Path of Exile is damaged". The bin trick no longer works.
2 other interesting observations while trying to get things going.
- THe Move to Trash option does not actually move anything. It makes a copy and moves that to the bin. How can I tell - I have the POE folder open. The app file does not disappear - WTH ....
- After removing the app file manually the download process starts and then pukes after about 10 seconds. It leaves 2 files in the POE directory. HashCache.dat and update.dat.
Not sure if you can peek inside these but I bet something inside them is blowing thngs up
Further update. I removed HashCache, update and a small content.ggpk file. I then kicked off another update. This gave me the usual message. I selected Move to Trash (even though there was no file to move).
I then went to the Trash can and there was a Path of Exile app file (105.6MB). I dragged that back to the POE directory and right clicked to open it (double left click would also work).
It is now currently performing a full update - all 40+GB but at least it is going.
This clearly suggests to me that GGG has messed up the install package code somehow (or done something that Apple does not like and tosses it).
I will see if after the full update the game actually runs
It was built in an era when it (mostly) worked, and since Apple has gone ham on files downloaded from the internet, requiring explicit permission for accessing almost everything, etc.
I reckon there's a higher development cost now to delve into it again to figure out what the problem is and if they can address it in the current architecture of the launcher, not to mention actually implementing and testing it.
Probably one of those tasks that linger in the mid of the prio pile waiting for the few(?) developers with platform experience to have enough time to work on it.
