I figured out my problem in case anyone else has this. There is a display bug when you first equip a piece of gear that will increase your attack speed via hollow palm. The dps goes down at first and then 3-5 seconds later it jumps up to the correct value.

And the temporary one are too short (10 / 20s for zombies)

For the monk, you have to finish a monster to gain power to make the thunder slam worth it. When there is no add you struggle, when there is some adds you try to not kill them fast, you have to lower their health first and then achieve them with the palm

your bow is probably horribly outdated

the vast majority of your damage on an attack build (like lightning arrow) comes from your weapon

using a low level bow means very low damage

I read that as 2-4 damage, not 2-4 times the damage

bow shot is a solid skill for single target, tbh. If you put some good supports on there it can be useful

and it costs no mana

yes, that's the idea. You can pay gold for convenience or find someone to exchange the slow way (which will likely cost you more currency, so it's a tradeoff between gold and currency no matter how you slice it)

The old way, if you wanna avoid the gold fee, is true. But usually the market adjusts and you get a "better" ratio due to gold cost. At least in Poe 1.
items don't cost that much gold, you get a decent amount of gold if you start selling your items for gold at the vendor instead of disenchanting them for shards.

you can use overabundance as an example
