To directly answer your question, I'd say you want to focus almost entirely on:

1. Movement speed on boots
2. Damage on your weapon
3. As much life and resistances on gear as you can possibly find (as long as it's not at the expense of #1 and #2)
4. An up to date life flask with 2 good mods

Armor, evasion, and energy shield honestly don't matter (for the campaign). Don't invest into them on your passive tree, get damage on your passive tree.

Usually its not too bad in poe1. The new league mechanic is available almost always immediately in first act. So you get a new toy to play with. Also between leagues they usually do balance patches or add new skills. So many people use the league reset to explore new builds.

In poe1 campaign on a fresh start takes me ~10 hours with playing around with the new mechanic / taking breaks. I kinda expect poe2 to end up around there too if i bothered to learn layouts and stuff

One of merc's ascendencies also has a niche node that gives more weaponset points letting you basically branch off with 44 points into different things on the tree (swapping the branches with weaponswap)

so a melee/crossbow dude is technically possible, though idk how great that would be

I never used a leveling guide. But this is my trial and error findings.

1. +minion level is king. Helm, amulet, sceptre. Other damage stats will not compare.

2. route to spirit rerservation node at top of her path and take as many damage passives along the way as you can. Maybe spend 5 levels on a cluster just out of the way to get minion attack speed, minion res and minion damage.

3. if in trade league; as soon as she gets her first exalt, trade for the 50spirit unique shield. It will last her the life of the campaign.

4. Arsonist trivialize cruel difficulty, when you get 4+ of them. Once she gets raging spirit, just run arsonist, raging spirits and flamewall for ez clap.

5. make sure to do the spirit quests. 3 of them.

She can also put a level 4 shield charge for mobility, once she gets the spirit shield.

You just want ES and Evasion on everything, except your Chest, you want a chest with like 2k + evasion on it for the ascendancy points

Also its practically immune to bleed due to a bug...

Just try and get gear that gives both, and use the gambler for it. It's honestly the easiest class to level.

in poe1 going ES early was an issue cause it was tough to scale it that early, especially with swapping gear soo frequently.

In poe2, theres 0 life on tree, and for god knows why theres more ES on tree than poe1...
Also the gear provides solid amounts of ES pretty early too. So its totally an option, but you would probably be playing hybrid life/ES at least until campaign is over anyway

i can't really tell how good sorc is cause i did cast on freeze comet / freezing pulse and then GGG nerfed CoF Comet to an unuseable state without insane investment so i just don't know how viable it is anymore.

Pretty sure the sorcs are all running flamewall+spark, maybe with Ice wall for singletarget (kinda nutty explosion damage)

K, I am not familiar with monk. You have 2 options.

1. you can look for a leveling guide

2. you can look at each skill and see what the cost vs damage would be and select the best 1. You have bosses and regular mobs to consider, and damage type single target or area damage. Vs what you need currently.
