Okay fam. I just got the wooting 80 HE in the ghost translucent color. I have a piifox walker 68 cyberpunk edition. I have swapped some gateron jade pros into the waiting as I seriously dislike the lekkers clack in the wooting. I noticed that the jades are very quiet in the wooting. The lekkers sounds better in the piifox. I don't know component names yet, but the board under the key caps on the piifox is metal and the whole KB seems more stiff. (I like this more). Could this be due to the Ghost plastic case on the Wooting?

The piifox has a FABULOUS sound

unpopular opinion - I think Geon and other Board makers when they support switches

should only give you options depending on what the switch can handle

FYI for any newer people reading this, this is to help you get an idea or understanding of what is thock and clack and what foam usually does in a keyboard. Foam alone won't fully change your keyboard to its desired sound, but rather be a factor in how it sounds.

THOCK VS CLACK

Sound is a type of Mechanical Wave:
Clack: Is considered to have a High Frequency wave, meaning the wave moves at high speed with low penetration. When it doesn't have good penetration, it doesn't do well in going through surfaces, causing the high-speed wave to bounce around surfaces.
An analogy for how this works would be throwing a ball at a wall. Because the ball is moving so fast but is very light, it doesn't go through surfaces well but rather bounces back quickly.

Thock: Is a Low Frequency Wave that travels at low speed and has a higher penetration that bounces and travels around and through surfaces, slowly but still maintains a high wavelength.
An analogy for this would be throwing a heavy, soft ball slowly at the wall. Since it's heavier and moves slower, it doesn't bounce off but ratherpressess into the wall or maybe even pushes through a little, making it at leastshakes.

TLDR: Clack produces a high-pitched frequency sound that is bounced around against/through surfaces with low penetration and at a high speed wave length. Thock, however, is a lower-pitched frequency sound that travels slowly due to the wavelength penetrating at a high speed through a surface, causing it to slow down.

**WHAT DOES FOAM DO? **

Foam is an energy converting device: "It acts like a barrier or obstacle that the sound wave needs to travel through"

Sound vs Foam:
-Thinner Foam-> Reduce High Frequency Sound (Clack)->Creating more emphasis on Lower Frequency Sound (Thock)

-Thicker Foam-> Reduce Low Frequency Sound (Thock)->Creating more emphasis on Higher Frequency Sound (Clack)

-"If you shove lots of thick foam or layers of foam into your keyboard, you're essentially reducing the deeper end of sound = small thock"

-"More or thicker foam actually creates more clack"

PCB Sheets: Rather than a sound acoustic foam like a case or plate foam, it is used as a sound modifier like a filter. A similar analogy of this would be adjusting the EQ of your audio to change how it sounds.

TLDR: In a keyboard, foam used as a "sound dampener" can target certain frequencies of sound to produce a different sound wave length of choice, depending on the density and volume of foam that is being used in a keyboard. PCB Sheets like IXPE or PE Foam sheets are used as a sound modifier, which is used to filter or change the sound profile of the board (especially when bottoming out a switch).

When the mechanical waves of sound travel through thinner foam, depending on how much is put in the board, it tends to reduce higher frequency sounds, emphasizing the lows and mids, which we call thock. But if thicker foam is packed into the keyboard, there is less space for the waves to travel through, making the foam more like a wall or surface for sound and frequency waves to bounce off, which causes clack.

Keycaps can affect the sound of a keyboard by material, thickness, density and what not.
To keep it short to your question,
PBT are usually made more thicker and denser causing it to have a more deeper or muted sound and as for ABS it's more lighter making it less dense which mostly produces a higher pitched sound.

Thickness of the keycap and profile/shape does affect it as well
