I was using random foam as a rist rest stopped using it since I noticed it was limiting me I played with it pretty much the entire time I’ve every had a mechanical or halleffect keyboard but stopped then improved in pretty much every game different for many people I think

initially i'll just build the keyboard but at some point i would like to paint the case too which is why I chose the raw option
internet tells me it's simple to paint the raw zinc case using a zinc primer first. I'm curious if anyone has painted it or is familiar with such skillsets to know a good zinc primer to buy as well as paint brand suggestion. or is any brand gonna be fine as long as it is in fact a primer for zinc? i want to paint the case burgandy and potentially dye the silicon stuff(the feet and wrist rest) teal somehow burgandy and teal is my favorite color combo lately. internet also told me dyeing white silicon is fairly simple too but being that this is my first time doing this i'm concerned im in over my head and should just keep it simple. any tips and suggestions welcome.

There’s a bunch of brands on Amazon but I haven’t bought any yet since I’m not very knowledgeable about painting projects. And I have a lot of time till my parts arrive. My post here is actually probing for insight on that also.

I feel like most of what you see is for galvanized metal

it's not that it isn't for zinc, since galvanizing is zinc, it's just that the zinc in galvanized surfaces is zinc carbonate, whereas you're trying to paint just a hunk of metal

I'm fairly confident that you don't need a particular type of primer in this case, just a metal primer in general I feel like should be fine

from what I read the primers for galvanized surfaces are meant to etch away the galvanization to get better paint adherence

but now that I think about it I'm sure the stuff for galvanized pieces work as well, can't hurt at any rate? I'm just not sure you can find it at sort of the quantities and price you'd like? maybe they are all for painting roofs and whatnot and come in 10L buckets?

painting is rarely rocket science and getting it so wrong that the paint just flies off the part is extremely difficult unless you completely bungle up the process

even that article just says to use an acrylic primer, which is about 50% of any standard spray paint primers 🤔 but then it also wants you to scrub the part with ammonia beforehand

I feel like it's just a paint company trying to sell you as many cans of stuff as possible

at any rate if it was me, 8€ can of "metal primer" from the hardware store (acrylic) and an 8€ can of acrylic spraypaint would be my choice and not worry about it too much

You should also consider that the raw case has a coating on it

So you would need to work around that or get it off somehow

so the coating I don't think is an issue but it raises a good point; we don't even know what the compound/oxide at the surface level even is, so making a super educated guess about paints and primers would be really hard

I personally haven't painted zinc or galvanized pieces but I have painted anodized aluminium, I have painted your run of the mill steel, I have painted plastic and I have painted just raw aluminium

but so far all I've ever done is clean, sand if necessary (to remove anodizing/other unknown coatings), prime if I feel like it and just paint

Side-shine-through keycaps won’t be as well lit as you see in the picture because Woot’s boards have north-facing LEDs and for this south-facing LEDs are preferable.

i did research on that aspect and from what i read the rgb is only marginally dimmer on side printed vs the top printed despite north facing LEDs still plenty apparent and arguably better looking if you dont like the rgb to be that bright. i opted for side facing because i may hand paint korean japanese and arabic onto the tops.

It depends on how transparent the keycap material is and which switches you use. It’s kind of an hit or miss especially with a white switch plate as the backlight most likely will be brighter than the legends. To achieve the best brightness, I’d go with transparant switches like TTC RGBs, UR Studio Ice or Raw HEs would be alright as well.

The lighting overall has a lower priority to performance/feel to me, so in that regard the ttc kom pom seemed to be more recomended than the rgb.

KoM RGBs’ wobble is identical to that of POMs, so in that regard there is no difference. Both require lubing as well as they come basically dry. It’s just a preference thing, which sound you prefer.

TTC’s switches are ridiculously expensive that’s why I’d recommend testing a couple different ones before committing but if they’re within budget, they’re great switches regardless so you’ll be good. :)

Guys, I might have found one of the most genius ways to fix stem wobble in Gateron Jade and Lekker L45/60 switches. Simply using the top housing from Lekkers significantly minimizes stem wobble.

If you use a Gateron stem with a Lekker housing, the wobble almost completely disappears.

Yeah, the top housing from Lekker V2s specifically. That’s a stem swapped Raptor basically but not everyone likes it due to the increased friction.

It does, you can use a Black Knight/Lucifer stem with the Raw HE top housing to get a similar decrease in stem wobble without any friction issues. These switch combinations are commonly referred to as frankenswitches.

Grab the top and bottom of the switch and give it a little wiggle I found the bottom of the switch would pop up before the top so with some wiggling it would fully come up with no issue
