Neat?

ashen spindle

Wait for it to become default if you go opt in we’ll just see the usual cases of stuff bricking or having other issues before it’s all ironed out

vivid wigeon
#

What do you mean obviously Microsoft will rigorously test their updates before pushing them to users right?

ashen spindle
#

oh this isnt even about microsoft doing stuff correctly and test it

#

but the last time something changed and SSDs broke after an update it was because they had faulty firmware

#

so any change like this you dont want to push out when your code could be perfect but hardware still bricks because the drivers are fucked

pale sigil
#
#

Absolutely nuts

reef patrol
#

Someone's getting sued by EVERYONE 😄

tribal dirge
unkempt lake
#

It's funny how he waited until the wendoverproduction/legaleagle case was dismissed to post it

#

Also i really feel like this second part... is kind of a nothingburger

#

Except the language used in the mr beast ad l, could be argued that it's targetted at kids over 13 years old which makes it legal

#

Honey may be ethically/morally shady but it's not a scam and it's not illegal

ashen spindle
#

uh no the law isnt the same in every country for that, see imgur not being available in the uk because they are collecting <18y olds info by not having a system that seperates them

#

not to mention I dont think every thing was consolidated into one suit yet? was that the case or was everything dismissed?

#

and even then its not dismissed with prejudice meaning they can refile it with more info

unkempt lake
#

They can refile within 30 days the judge said if not case goes bye bye

#

And we're getting awfully close to that 30 days

ashen spindle
#

no its 45 days

unkempt lake
#

Oh

#

My memory is wrong then

#

But yeah

ashen spindle
#

not to mention that doesnt matter if its not consolidated into one as idk what parties joined wendover

#

and even then you can file for extentions etc. etc.

unkempt lake
#

Youtube should make the vid unavailable in those countries

ashen spindle
#

uh no that very much is a honey problem if they made the script and specifically gave it to someone they know has a target audience in these palces

unkempt lake
#

Not the creators

ashen spindle
#

if you are willingly engage into something you know will end up breaking the law you're not off the hook, so paypal cant blame youtube for it

unkempt lake
#

There's no way on youtube to set a cideo to be manually blocked in a certain country

ashen spindle
#

the creators aren't at fault since they cant be expected to know what honey does behind doors

unkempt lake
#

Unless youtube does it themselves

ashen spindle
#

neither youtube nor the creators are at fault here nor should they be responsible in this situation

unkempt lake
#

Youtube is absolutely responsible

#

The honey ad could be legal in MULTIPLE countries

#

But not in others

#

Youtube is the one who pushed that video to those countries

ashen spindle
#

youtube cant be held accountable to dig into a sponsor segment to then make an investigation to see if the sponsor is breaking tos or laws

#

if it was youtube serving these ads maybe theres an argument for it

unkempt lake
#

They didnt give the creators the tools

#

Also if there was a report or a request to take it down

#

And youtube didnt do shit

#

That's on youtube

ashen spindle
#

thats not what anyone is saying though

#

the point is the fault lays still with honey/paypal

unkempt lake
#

Legally they're in the clear tho

ashen spindle
#

no???

unkempt lake
#

They absolutely are

ashen spindle
#

"we know we cant advertise like this in countries xys but youtube doesnt have region blocks for videos so guess we cant stop it" isnt legal protection????

unkempt lake
#

Honey can't predict that some kid in germany will be watching the ad, there's no filtering online

ashen spindle
#

yes you can because they specifically partner with mr beats and know his audience targets

unkempt lake
#

Ok so are we just supposed to know the world's entire set of laws

ashen spindle
#

if you are making ads? yes?

#

thats part of your job?

unkempt lake
#

If there actually was an issue i am certain that plenty of governments around the world woulda smacked this shit down

#

But that's not the case

#

Most advertising laws are also welp

#

Only about shit like tv

ashen spindle
#

thats the whole point though that it was not known hence the lawsuits coming now?

ashen spindle
#

governments dont audit private companies to see if their code complies with law without any reason to suspect something is afoul?

unkempt lake
#

The lawsuits are from merchants

#

And content creators

#

I have not seen ANYTHING about a lawsuit for that

#

Show me one

#

The mr beast ads have been around for literal years

ashen spindle
#

you are aware that it's not been clear what honey does when people did those ad spots?

#

and that the second megalag video came out 14 hours ago yes?

unkempt lake
#

It was known before thr megalag video

#

LONG before

#

Again the video is a literal nothing burger

ashen spindle
#

where was it known from

unkempt lake
ashen spindle
#

what

unkempt lake
#

You mean to tell me the biggest creator on youtube can have an illegal ad for years in his vids

#

And it will be up

#

And no one will notice?

ashen spindle
#

how would he know if his ad team isnt doing an investigation into the code base of the app that it doesnt do what it says?????

#

do you understand the issue is not the spot they made with mr beast where he tells teens to install it, but that they did that while using their data when saying they arent?

hushed herald

ashen spindle
umbral heron
hushed herald
#

thank you got it

unkempt lake
ashen spindle
#

of course they are???

#

just because they want the entire family doesnt mean they dont want the kids data

unkempt lake
#

technically its not according to their TOS and ecommerce websites mostly have their own tos which bans kids

#

Again not illegal but ethically shady

#

example, may track usage on steam but you need to be at least 13 to use steam

ashen spindle
#

what do ecommerce TOS have to do with it when they track you so much they know what steam codes you used

#

I'm going insane with this amount of goalpost moving

unkempt lake

Meaning the extension assumes that you are in fact 13 or over if you are a steam user

but its still a hassle

is it hard to setup ?

Since I dont use a bootloader to choose what OS I want to use
I have to enter the BIOS boot menu each time I want to boot Windows, so I spam F12 at bootup and I can choose Windows from there

Updates work the same as normal, except on Windows, I need to spam F12 when it reboots to do the update

#

Its not hard to set up

Install Linux on an SSD
Plug in your other SSD you want to use for Windows,
Remove the SSD Linux is on
Install Windows

Put back in the SSD with Linux

Easy easy

What’s probably happening is that instead of buying ram sticks from micron they now buy memory chips and package them and then use them, maybe on top of making them for DiY too

Should I disable swap? I dont use it (I think) never once went past my physical ram total ... but this distro assigns 8GB by default

halcyon moss
#

No

iron wave
#

I would. I've been doing that on all my systems since I got to 16GB.

crimson wigeon
#

It's nice to have some swap just in case you want to run some (very) broken software

#

Doesn't have to be real, can just be zram swap which is what a lot of distros default to these days

iron wave
#

I've only ever had Windows software be that broken.

wheat plume
#

yeh this is zram

umbral heron
#

If you have 8+ GB of RAM yeet swap the hell out of your PC SilvervaleBoxs

iron wave
#

zram seems pointless.

umbral heron
#

Same with pagefile on Windows SwitchySippy

halcyon moss
iron wave
#

You have 48GB.

halcyon moss
#

Yeah. So?

wheat plume
#

now I need to find out how to disable it :')

frozen drift
halcyon moss
#

Swap can be nice as a buffer

iron wave
halcyon moss
#

ZSwap is conpressed memory

iron wave
crimson wigeon
#

It just means that in the (probably rare case!) the system gets memory constrained it can just compress some old data instead of having to chuck it out

umbral heron
crimson wigeon
#

For example if you want to play a broken game called Star Citizen that can use up to 50+ gigs, you absolutely must have enough memory for it to not get OOM killed

wheat plume
iron wave
#

50 isn't all that much.

wheat plume
#

I see no zram in here

iron wave
#

Dang.

#

Check kernel args.

crimson wigeon
#

Still more than the 48 gigs their system has, so it would be OOM killed on the spot

iron wave
#

Or the arch wiki.

#

I have 64GB. :-)

umbral heron
crimson wigeon
#

Yeah maybe your system, lucky you.. few are lucky enough to get that much now

iron wave
#

My next system will be double or quadruple that.

crimson wigeon
#

Most distros that default to zram use zram-generator or something similar (in case they hate systemd)

wheat plume
iron wave
#

systemd is nice.

umbral heron
wheat plume
iron wave
#

run0 pacman -Syu :-)

crimson wigeon
#

But yeah I have only 32 gigs of RAM and am gonna be stuck here for years I guess. Have zram set to 25 gigs and I absolutely need it for some broken software

wheat plume
#

how is the software that broken?!

crimson wigeon
#

You know how modern developers are inefficient..

umbral heron
crimson wigeon
#

As per convention the default zram-generator config is probably in /usr, the idea is you copy it to /etc (or make a new dropin) when you want to override it

#

That way to "factory reset" you can just rm your own config files

iron wave
#
run0 bash
echo 0 > /sys/module/zswap/parameters/enabled
^D
wheat plume
#

oooo arch wiki has dark theme now!!!

iron wave
#

That's only for the current boot though.

crimson wigeon
#

zswap is probably disabled, the common wisdom (whether it's correct or not!) is that you probably shouldn't have it on while using zram as swap

wheat plume
iron wave
#

Oh, zswap.enabled=0 kernel arg.

crimson wigeon
#

Again, they have zram, so they need to stop that. And as I said, it's probably zram-generator

iron wave
#

Weird.

#

Does swap not list the swap devices?

#

OH

#

zram and not zswap?

crimson wigeon
#

For example systemctl status dev-zram0.swap which would also helpfully point to the manpages

iron wave
crimson wigeon
#

And can probably examine the current config like so systemd-analyze cat-config systemd/zram-generator.conf

umbral heron
#

I'm stealing that duck_bopping

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah works for all systemd config files, useful if you can't keep track of which dropin does what

Nope, I wanna get into making 3d assets for my games in godot

#

I can do CAD at uni

tribal dirge
#

Generally the blender recommended specs are a good point of reference when it comes to creative mesh work

#

Iirc they recommend an 8 core CPU, 32gb of RAM, and 8GB of VRAM

#

This should also be just fine for a lighter game engine like godot, although you might want just a little more vram for more complex environments

#

Maybe 12gb of vram, but I think you should be able to survive on 8GB

umbral heron
#

For modelling game assets in Blender my friend has 4G VRAM and says it's more than he needs hanaSit

tribal dirge
umbral heron

Yeah, but it's simple game assets, not whole-ass renders with lightning, physics and whatnot simulation duck_bopping

tribal dirge

And a 4 thread cpu

#

But its minimum for a reason

ashen spindle

making models for a game scene != needing space to have the enitre game scene running

vapid ruin
tribal dirge
#

And really only looking at blender recommended specs

ashen spindle
#

yeah but if you make assets for a game where you might use those sizes, individual assets in blender would always use less

blender recommendations factor in that you could do entire scenes in blender

True, I guess there really is no good basis to what specs are good enough for blender then

umbral heron

Ryzen 375/380 with lots of RAM, good laptops SilvervaleBoxs

tribal dirge

Esp since cpu and gpu memory is shared

#

Sure it's using not super fast memory for its gpu, but that doesn't really matter for modeling

iron wave
#

Aren't there 64GB mods for some GPUs?

#

I wonder if I could go to 128. That would be insane.

tribal dirge
#

They literally snag the chip from like a 4070 and put it onto a new pcb with like an A4000 vbios and more VRAM

iron wave
#

It's not just a memory chip swap and a flash? Oof.

tribal dirge

So you need a new pcb

iron wave
#

I wouldn't mind a 64GB 5090 but that's quite an oof.

ashen spindle
#

till blender 5.1 HIP-RT still isnt supported so generally getting a nvidia gpu is still the better option for it and only once thats in we hopefully see that gpu selection doesnt matter much for blender anymore

iron wave

I figured it was double capacity chips.

tribal dirge
iron wave

It used to be. :-(

tribal dirge

Man, that would beat out the A100 setup my work has with two cards.

ashen spindle

if you could find gddr7 chips with double capacity then you could mod it just like people did with the 4090

but we're still waiting on the 3gb g7 chips to hit market iirc

It's like a special variant of Turing but specifically built for HPC

ashen spindle
#

other way around volta was made and turing derived from it for consumers

tribal dirge
#

Oh I see

ashen spindle
#

thats why turing had all the extra hardware and still gets the latest dlss updates and all

tribal dirge
#

Makes sense

#

I'm surprised they even make game ready drivers for Volta at all LMAO

iron wave
#

Yeah, two 96GB 5090s would have more VRAM than the 3xA100 setup at work.

tribal dirge
#

Unless they made a special version of A100 with less

#

I only recall there being two, a 40gb one and an 80gb one

ashen spindle
#

yes he said 2x 96gb

tribal dirge
#

ouhhhhh

#

my brain skipped the two for some reason LMAO

#

that makes more sense

#

not to mention 2 blackwell pro 6000s has more cuda cores than those A100s

#

actually, even a single pro 6000 blackwell has more cuda cores than all 3 of those A100s LMAO

ashen spindle
#

cores dont mean shit on gpus

iron wave
#

We are limited by PCI-e bandwidth IIRC.

tribal dirge
#

ah

iron wave
#

The guy managing it might have convinced the CEO to buy an insane machine from Nvidia, but he's keeping it a secret beyond "it needs to be in a datacenter" and my guess of it running on DC seems to be correct.

ashen spindle
#

I hope its not one of the upcoming Kyber racks which are too heavy to install them in traditional data center floors dogekek

iron wave

Feels like it.

I mean if you're willing to suffer then stxh laptops and being a first gen tester would maybe be an option xD

assuming they do proper follow up using and finding new issues will do more than donations to get them fixed

Hopefully ROCM ends up doing really well.

crimson wigeon

Doubt

ashen spindle
#

rocm is fine and will do fine

#

just mostly for AI/datacenter not consumer dogekek

iron wave
#

I kind of want to buy another 4090 but I need to save my money.

frozen ingot
iron wave
#

I also want Threadripper. :V

#

I have enough money saved for all of this stuff but I need to use it to move out.

frozen ingot
#

kinda glad I didn't have to move out from parents in this housing economy

umbral heron
iron wave
#

Why would I?

iron wave
true blaze
#

First wooting keyboard just came in don't exactly know what to do with my wootility settings..

#

First thing I did was put actuation to 0.1mm and rapid trigger on and then kinda just started playing brawlhalla lmao

iron wave
#

That's essentially all I did and I have a Kickstarter Wooting Two.

true blaze
#

I have a wooting 60he not v2 I'm too broke for that

iron wave
#

You're too broke for a full sized keyboard? Oof.

frozen ingot
#

yeah not that common to have electrical outlets/charging access on parking spots here unless you own a house

iron wave
#

I could manage with a laundry room that connects to a garage.

frozen ingot
#

og 60he still cuts it

true blaze
#

why get the full sized when the 60 can do all the same things with a little less features like a numpad or wtv

iron wave
#

I have three Wooting Twos, I find it very necessary. (Workstation, VR PC, work computer at work)

#

I use the numpad a lot.

true blaze
#

And I'm not you lol

#

I don't use the numpad at all

#

I have no need to

frozen ingot
#

I didn't use numpad for years until I used blender, its pretty handy for that ngl

true blaze
#

I just kinda play games and go about my regular day I don't have any need for numpad

iron wave
#

I do be programming.

frozen ingot
#

but I'd rather have it separate than part of my kb

true blaze
#

I program too and I have no need for a numpad lol

leaden kiln
#

I have an separate numpad but I never used a numpad outside of work

iron wave
#

It's handy for numbers.

true blaze
#

that's the point of the numbers at the top of the keyboard lol

iron wave
#

That's slower.

#

For me at least.

true blaze
#

so simply reaching your finger to the top of your keyboard is slower than moving your entire hand to the far right side of your keyboard to input "21" and moving your right hand BACK to the right center of your keyboard?

#

hmmmmmm....

#

That just seems like a lot more effort for something that doesn't really need it

leaden kiln
#

can be faster if you have the mouse in your right hand, or if you simply enter a lot of numbers, ime at least

iron wave
#

If you're entering a string of 10+ digits yeah it's faster because they are all right there.

true blaze
#

Yeah that's a good point but if you're coding which is the example at this case there's just like no point lol if there's a lot of number just copy and paste.. if you can't do that then I can MAYBE understand a numpad but you still have the numbers at the top of your keyboard just use those.. and if you can just get used to the layout of the numbers at the top (personally I am used to it) it's not hard

#

That's just my opinion on it anyway - I'm in no one flaming anyone for using a numpad if it seems that way then I apologize but.. yeah :D

leaden kiln
#

well it's your keyboard so of course you should buy the size you want, I bought a v2 60he yesterday even though I already have the original 60he

true blaze
#

I just don't have the funds or anything to go around throwing money on 3-5 different keyboards when one does the trick shrug

#

Like as is this keyboard feels great the sound quality is the best I've personally owned and the responsiveness and stuff are awesome

leaden kiln
#

I might just sell my original, don't know how much I'd get for it at this point though

frozen ingot
#

thinking of upgrading switches on my 80he and put the old switches in my 60he

#

then maybe sell it

umbral heron

I need to switch springs and lube the rest of my Tikkens HanaCrying

All of that PCI-e.

tribal dirge

it was an expensive CPU

Yeah they are.
