I value GUIs by how well they do mouse highlighting, Zed's does this funny thing where if you put your mouse cursor right between two elements both get highlighted, but which one actually gets the click? Who knows!

I still use it sometimes for really quick things, sometimes but it just feels so scuffed for some reason

i just nvim . for quick edits

crimson wigeon

I used to use nvim, but then I found hx and it makes a bit more sense to me so I prefer it

Personally while trying other stuff started on xfce landed on plasma, never moved away from plasma after that.

vagrant heath
#

i started with plasma, then felt like exploring, tried hyprland (i was in my early stages of linux and didnt rtfm), raged -> went back to plasma. [quite some time passes here] then tried sway, got back into twms, sway felt outdated so i switched to hyprland (actually rtfm-ed this time) used it ever since

crimson wigeon
#

Ah kids these days, don't have to waste hours trying to get Compiz working for the blingbling

#

Hey it's why I dove deep into Linux back in the day! I wanted my cube NOW!

vagrant heath
#

yea but plasma felt awkward for me and i always wasted time dragging windows around beacuse of wobbly windows xd

#

+1

crimson wigeon
#

And Compiz

#

Young me definitely did not have fun with that, and setting windows to be so wobbly they would immediately wobble offscreen

#

Yeah well I had a cylinder and gears and fish swimming around inside it

vagrant heath
#

crimson wigeon
#

When I closed windows they blew up into many pieces, if I then did the cube thing I saw the pieces in 3D wow technology and then add in the fire oh yeah waste all resources on the bling

vagrant heath
#

surely in c# lmao

crimson wigeon

and now I just use sway with no bling

it just super+q -ed my productivity (plasma effects)

I'm obviously biased but I have no problems at all using my fold as a normal phone with the cover screen, even with a thick case on it
it's nice having the taller cover screen, it's easy to write one handed with it, and the phone is still in portrait when you open it which is great

I tried the pixel 9 pro fold in a store and it bothered me that it's so wide folded up, also sad that it opens to landscape

reef patrol

What are you smoking Noctua. You don't want air vortexes.

ashen spindle
#

no this is the best way for temps because otherwise the intake from the frton gets partially exhausted before it can cool the cpu

reef patrol
#

No it doesn't.

ashen spindle
#

idk its how the theory shows it, the visual of the airflow and the results

analog sinew
#

top exhaust at the rear good at the front bad

#

at the front you want top intake

ashen spindle
#

could be different with FE models of the latest generation because they are blowthrough so they push air up too

reef patrol
#

Or using remotely decent fans made for pushing air, and pushing through metal gaps respectively. But with an FE card you might genuinely need more intake at the top, as much as it loathes me to say - though don't use Noctua fans, cause they look ugly as sin when reversed.

#

Reverse blade when you cavemen.

analog sinew
#

i have a noctua top exhaust :D

#

cant see it unless you look

ashen spindle
#

no with an FE card you mgiht need top exhaust in the front is my point xD

reef patrol
#

Also AIO and loop havers obviously don't need this, cause there's nothing to cool in a specific spot.

reef patrol
analog sinew
#

i had a 120 mil leftover so i added it and run it rly low jsut to get some extra exhaust out cause i have alotta intakes

ashen spindle
#

well that depends, it could be hot air but could also be higher airflow vs it being almost stale air from being FE card up, intake down cancelling itself

#

but that would be something someone should test

reef patrol
#

The way I see it, you either push the GPU exhaust through the CPU - and do a top intake to mix that air with colder intake air.

Or you push the GPU air back down, which just makes the GPU boil and cause its fans to intake when outtaking, struggling.

they should have pushed R&D for 10 nm after their very first 14nm refresh, but instead they thought AMD could never even shake their throne. That's what happens when you think stagnation keeps you ahead of everyone else

#

when AMD hired Lisa Su as their CEO they ditched Bulldozer for Zen. Sure, Zen 1 and 2 were luke warm, but Zen 3 hit Intel where it hurts, but Intel isn't in a bad position at all rn. They're still ahead of AMD on the market. 54 to 46% rn, including servers

#

and considering the fact that Intel is eating away from nVidia rn on the GPU market is quite hilarious too. Everyone predicted that Intel would impact AMDs sales, but instead Intel's taking from nVidia

ashen spindle
#

thats just so much wrong on so many levels

#

the 14/10nm thing has nothing to do with amd, the cpu design team and fab teams are completely separate and the fab was not hitting goals nothing changes there with or without amd

they fucked up 10nm so much they ended up having to to 14+++ not because they wanted to and thought it was enough they had no other choice

they also didnt dutch bulldozer, they had to do a groundup new design but some of the biggest advantages they have now is lessons learned from bulldozer

i don't really know much about HDDs so if you could tell me that would be nice

pale sigil

They have the highest failure rate

steel current
#

i havent had that many drives but one of the only 2 failures i had was a seagate

pale sigil
#

A laughable amount

#

Everyone and their grandma has had a Seagate fail.

At least in my experience havo

I've never had any HDD fail in my entire life unless it was Seagate and when at my job it was always Seagate drives we had to replace.

#

Always Seagate

vagrant pagoda

seagate and toshiba have higher rates than others, but they also use more seagates becuase of cost

trim crane
#

if you could choose, what brand and spec for your HDD

pale sigil
#

My Toshiba is going strong 10+ years

vagrant pagoda
#

so if you can account for failures, seagate is worth it

pale sigil
#

But it's an enterprise one

pale sigil
#

I was going to say Toshiba from experience but maybe not hahaha

steel current

the other failure i had was a wd...

Back then 7200rpm was expensive af

#

I say 10+ years because idk if it was 2013-2015 I bought them.

#

My Nas was a 2012 model but I'm pretty sure I got it in 2013 haha

#

Tbh I might even consider just getting an 8tb as I don't really need to raid my media since I don't care if I lose it.

best nas is your old gaming pc

My Plex server is just for me, family and friends and I have gigabit anyway.

Although I had to upgrade the ram as I kept running out (16gb(

mine is 4790k +32gb of ddr3

good times

pale sigil
#

It's 39gb ATM

#

Since I'm not too bothered about mismatching ram haha

#

The 2.5gb PCIe never gets used though haha, probably a waste of money but it wasn't much and I'm putting an SSD in there soon so it'll get used 👀

gbit isnt fast

pale sigil

It's so fun transferring to an Ssd over 2.5gb ha

vagrant pagoda
#

most single mechs can do gbit sequential

#

even 2.5 isnt outside of mech

pale sigil
#

I'm just saying I don't really utilise the 2.5gb

vagrant pagoda
#

now in raid youre lucky to get 50-100mega a drive

I suspect zfs kicked in?

It blocks everything it can.

Even screenshot tools

okay ! my mouse macros seem to be working, so i will have to use that 😕

pale sigil
#

It doesn't block hardware macros though

#

Because the hardware is sending a signal whereas this software has to run over.
