After unscrewing the cooler just twist it gently while leaving CPU in still closed socket, works everytime

since the pins are on the board the only damage that could happen is if you like hold it up sideways and the cpu drop sideways onto the pins and bends it

so just move it up and to the side and look if the cpu is in the socket, if not just hold your hand beneath the cooler while you turn it around to remove it

but I never had the issue happen

If I was an engineer to 12VHPWR++++++ I would feel ashamed.
It's pretty freaking common sense engineering that you overdesign these components so you can have multiple failure modes and keep working. Nvidia's 12VHERPIES connector not only lacks all these safety margins, but also lacks the ability to detect critical failures.

12VHP suffers from from the following:
It's fairly easy to have multiple pins fail to make contact
And all power can push through one cable, cooking the whole thing.

In theory Nvidia could have fixed this by having detectors in place to make sure each power pin was working, however they explicitly designed 12VHP so they didn't need to do this any more like with the older triple 8 pin setups.

yeah it really mostly is on nvidia how they implemented it and what they didnt add to the spec, the 12vhpwr spec in itself is fine if it would either mandate regulation on the board or require thicker wires or some combination etc.

for the most part its cost savings not raw technical specs that kill the cards/connectors

also there is no spec for the 8pin eps in ATX, but the pin/connector is 7a * 4 * 12 =336w * 2 = 672
