Then AMDs Ryzen started being good in with the 3000/5000 generation and suddenly both Intel AND AMD raised their prices by several hundred on the high end

#

And the low-medium end soon followed.

digital cliff
#

same with gpus though

#

technology is just getting increasingly more expensive

analog sinew
#

yeah pc gaming has gotten crazy

#

unless you are willing to drop 1k you're not even getting much.

trim crane

thick elk
#

Process nodes more expensive signaling with pcie-e 4/5 definitely play a part. Also add some inflation in the mix.
But end of the day, it was bad in the past too, we just have some good days with low pricing.
Also the era of cheaper GPU's coincided with at the high end crossfire/sli being a thing.

Let's not forget in terms of CPU's a 5700x3d + cheap motherboard is still a thing.
Even integrated graphics is a thing.

trim crane
#

yeah, 1k really isnt much anymore which is really sad

cursive summit
#

It's funny, I've seen the renders of these so many times the past few years I just know these are the real Switch 2 joycons

#

Which is all the more funny that people are just more and more openly posting leaked photos of Switch 2from whatever these places are, factories, certification facilities, and Nintendo just.. doesn't seem to care

#

Something is going on with the Switch 2 and I don't understand it, I've never seen a project so openly leaked from a company like Nintendo

analog sinew
#

well timed leaks can be better than millions in advertising

#

but usually nintendo is rabid so that is unusual

cursive summit
#

I've never seen a device more leaked than the Switch 2

#

Everything has been leaked

#

For years on end

#

And it's still not properly announced and no release date is given

#

What on earth is going on with this project

analog sinew
#

well it has to be close to coming out then right?

#

if theres so many ofem out there

cursive summit
#

I can only imagine that the fact that a "Big Switch" has taken them so long to churn out, something must be wrong with it

#

It runs the same software, some of the same parts, they just revamped the problematic ones like the processor being really damn old and inept, the joycon rails being mechanically unreliable so they are going with magnets, the joycon sticks tend to drift and they are likely hall effect now, the screen was low resolution so they are going for 1080p

#

That should not have taken them what, 3+ years to churn out? And all these leaks that have been plaguing the project

#

Something is up with this project, and I really want to know what's wrong with it

nimble arch
#

Switch 2 doesn't actually seem that impressive from the leaks IMHO

cursive summit
#

It'll be fine

nimble arch
#

Sure, it'll sell because it's Nintendo.

cursive summit
#

1080p play, 4K upscaling, it'll be alright for the platform

nimble arch
#

Doesn't change my opinion on the device being underwhelming in my opinion.

cursive summit
#

Well yes it'll sell, but it's also technologically fine

#

I don't see the underwhelming aspect of it, sorry

#

It'll only be underwhelming if the price is not the same as the Switch 1 but 499, at which point yeah I'd consider it underwhelming

#

+50$ for the new features and largely increased processing capacity, yeah I'm okay with that

balmy vector
#

The ultimate question is will it run pokemon scarlet/violet at a decent frame rate SwitchyHeHe

analog sinew
#

x to doubt

cursive summit
#

Scarlet/Violet works perfectly fine with an emulator, and if you overclock your switch (homebrew only) it actually gets a lot better, you can even mod it, there's great mods for Switch such as Pokemon Compass

Tbf, this chart is insane

#

B580 is so dependent on CPUs it performs on par with a RTX 4070Ti with a 9800X3D?

ashen spindle
#

60ti*

#

yes that was known since launch it swings between >=4060 and <=4060ti

cursive summit
#

Hm no, 4070Ti, the uplift from 4060 to 4060Ti is not 30FPS

ashen spindle
#

this is why its so annoying having to play google for you

cursive summit
#

Same quality, different results? 153 FPS to 126 on the 4060?

#

And I found a benchmark with very high quality + DLAA and it scores about 150 FPS with 4070Ti Super

ashen spindle
#

doesnt matter what other benchmarks do since its not the same scenes being tested

cursive summit
#

Well were these two even the same scenes being tested? The numbers are very different

ashen spindle
#

its litearlly the same for the b580 so yes

cursive summit
#

So 4060 just magically downgraded, how weird

ashen spindle
#

could be vram limit or something else who knows

thick elk
#

Or look at the screenshots 4060ti vs non ti

cursive summit
#

4060Ti is not all that much better than the non-Ti

ashen spindle
thick elk
#

It probably is in terms of die size / manufacturing cost but fair, thought it was about the gap between the benchmarks

#

Should read better before commenting

cursive summit
#

Fair, I saw a comment saying B580 was on par with 4070Ti, so I just looked up a benchmark with same specs and yeah, it was around 150-170FPS which was kinda insane

cursive summit
#

But looking up a bit deeper that should not be possible, 4070Ti at those specs should score well over 180FPS which is still very respectable for the B580

ashen spindle
# vapid ruin At $250 is INSANE

in 90% of cases its like a 4060 with more power draw and worse idle and now all the issues on older systems, and depending on the region you can get a 4060 for the same or lower price

vapid ruin

cursive summit
#

Those X3Ds are becoming incredible

thick elk
#

I wonder how the driver overhead affects intel CPU's with their big little cores.

ashen spindle
#

latest track is that it could be from being single threaded driver calls

#

which would add up why its so much worse on older cpus when it cant be multithreaded

#

so big.little wouldnt matter much

thick elk
#

Ah, got you, I wondered if it was related to the games loading the cores, but this makes a lot of sense.

ashen spindle
#

the quesiton is if its limited in software or hardware, if the driver is bad it could be improved, if its a hardware limit you cant do much

digital cliff
#

little bit beside the discussion but wasn't there a feature missing from the arc cards on linux? something intel even said they won't be implementing because it's too hard or impossible or whatever

#

do i misremember

ashen spindle
#

uhhh could be? but no clue what that would be

cursive summit
#

Well that's fun

thick elk
#

As far as I heard linux performance on arc is not great right now at least. Would otherwise be an interesting AB with scaling with a different driver stack.

digital cliff
#

i think there was something missing in the Xe driver but AV1 encoding works

cursive summit
#

Prolly overclocking?

#

I see there's no Arc app on Linux so

umbral heron
#

You can OC with mesa utilities, that's not really a problem, but on 1st gen Arcs encoding with HuC didn't work, not sure if it does now

cursive summit
#

I did see there's a post on how the Intel Arc driver has problems with Mesa (no clue what that is, heard of it before), but it works perfectly well on Ubuntu

#

I'd assume they work fine

#

Question if you still want to buy that card though when better options exist

umbral heron
#

Mesa is OpenGL/Vulkan implementation and some driver stuff and utilities too, if you're on Intel/AMD GPU on Linux, you almost certainly have something from Mesa suite nod

Also same exact software, supposedly, so whatever exploits exist there, might work with 2

fair gull
#

you mean the migswitch?

cursive summit

Well the migswitch abuses a specific exploit, rather new one at that

#

But yes

fair gull
#

new switches need to use hardware modding to boot homebrew

and migswitch is just a flashcard

old marlin
#

peepoShrug it might also just detect the current migswitch

fair gull
#

horizonOS is quite the solid microkernel and even the atmosphere devs dont know how youd software exploit it (and they needed to reimplement the original kernel stuff as new functions in atmos)

Jpegxl can do the same as PNG but with with smaller image sizes iirc

old marlin
cursive summit

Isn't the whole point of PNG just.. lossless, no compression?

No idea what that is supposed to refer to.

But GPD has a policy where they won't send out samples - even on a "we want it back afterwards" agreement. You can buy one with your own money - and if your review gets enough views, they will CONSIDER refunding you. Which means all reviews are inherently incentivised to suck up to GPD and do memey shit to get views.

I've reviewed plenty of products that weren't in mint, seal wrap condition from smaller, enthusiast brands - because they either couldn't afford to do so, or it was pre-release and they just didn't have enough stock to go around.

Gaming troubles has always been what's kept me from going Linux. SteamOS seems like a good way to see just how bad it is, once it's out for real. And I won't be making it my daily driving OS anyhow.

severe phoenix
#

SteamOS is a good alternative incase somerthing goes very, very, VERY wrong with Windows

#

At least for mainly gamers like me

crimson wigeon
#

Or even SteamOS itself, the base environment has basically gotten no updates since release, maybe some think it's good but an ancient version of KDE Plasma doesn't really make for a great impression..

The onscreen keyboard takes forever to appear, just using desktop mode is a giant pain in the rear if you don't have a real keyboard and mouse handy

#

And it covers up the text box you're putting text in, lovely

minor citrus
#

now you're mixing hardware problems (tiny screen with "low" resolution) with software

crimson wigeon
#

Phones have had this shit figured out forever

reef patrol
#

Ultimately it all remains to be seen - Judging purely by an OS build that is tailored to one specific device isn't fair to the desktop experience.

It's perfectly valid to be skeptical - But lets wait and see what they actually put on the table (and if they keep bringing out side dishes (updates) going forward before dismissing it entirely 😄 )

#

#FreeISFree
#NoWindowsActivationFee

minor citrus
crimson wigeon
#

Yes because Valve just can't be bothered putting in the effort to make it work nicely

#

They've had years and put in 0 improvements

#

And the fact you have to dip in to desktop mode to do basic stuff

minor citrus
#

when do you have to enter desktop mode?!

crimson wigeon
#

Maybe you want to edit a config file for a quirky game

#

Or even just access a web browser

digital cliff
#

it's the other stuff that's the issue honestly

reef patrol
#

And yet every time Linus has tried it, he ran into a bunch of funny issues 😄

#

Love it or hate it, we need a centralized Linux distro that is easier to target than "all of them"

digital cliff
#

I have not had a game not work just by clicking "play" in years

#

but yes, that's the core issue with linux and that is never gonna get solved

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah and SteamOS is just another distro with its own quirks and oddities

digital cliff
#

and as such linux will never be mainstream and never be a pick for 95% of people

lean geyser
#

I Had annoying issues with nvidia drivers

reef patrol
#

Not saying SteamOS will "solve" Linux gaming. But it will definitely HELP a ton, if not abandoned by Valve.

digital cliff
#

man I just really feel like there's nothing to solve on linux when it comes to gaming

#

you download a game and click play and proton is magic and everything works

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah now try to play a game that is not from Steam on SteamOS

digital cliff
#

so I click play on heroic and wine is magic and everything works

reef patrol
#

Skim through the last Linux challenge that Linus and Luke. Weird audio issues, controller issues, weird crashes and performance oddities, not being able to do splitscreen.

crimson wigeon
#

Until its not and you have to deal with the horribleness that is flatpak

digital cliff
reef patrol
#

Two or three I think? Yesterday's video is a bit of an "Update" on the situation, except focused on the SteamOS "beta" on Desktop.

digital cliff
#

I'll take a look, I haven't given steamOS any shot yet because I don't see the point

#

if it's steamOS specific issues then problem is solved by using something else i suppose, unless you're specifically talking handhelds

reef patrol
#

My main motivator is separating Microsoft from gaming. Longterm. Because we're slowly creeping into a future where they want to stream and subscription service everything to you 😄

crimson wigeon
#

But even on the Deck I hear constant trouble, like just earlier someone I know had theirs get a black screen of death because they tried to use the game recording feature built in to Steam

reef patrol
#

Everything I do work based is through a browser these days - so the only thing I'd miss hopping to Linux is stable software to control my fans and RGB, a good alternative to Office and Photoshop. Realistically.

#

And the ultra rare situation where I need Windows to run some random tool someone made to hack/fix a game that was only ever compiled for Windoze. 😄

digital cliff
#

if you need photoshop then you need photoshop, but if you can get by on a little more ascetic tools then there are a bunch of them

#

same for office, realistically

reef patrol
#

Just need it for shitposting memes, so anything with layers will do honestly 😄

#

So to conclude. I'll give SteamOS a try - And if it works great, great. And if it doesn't, I will at least have dipped my toes into "linux" and might try a different distro afterwards at that point.

digital cliff
#

often I feel like people go into linux with tunnelvision on expecting everything to work exactly like it does on windows and then when it doesn't they crucify it as horrible and unusable

#

sure there are actual valid annoyances and issues that sometimes take you hours to debug, but for 9/10 times you just need to adjust your workflow just a tiny bit and everything just works

#

for gaming especially it's hard to beat just downloading steam and clicking play on titles, can't remember a time when that didn't work for me

reef patrol
#

I look forward to being proven wrong. 🙂

crimson wigeon
#

Yeah if all your gaming is just that it's fine, but when you want to say mod games it gets tricky and you have to know that the virtual C drive is in steamlibrary/compatdata/appid.. and if you want to run a modding tool well you can try protontricks-launch but don't launch the game from there as it will all be wrong so you have to do crazy launch options in Steam

digital cliff
#

that is true, getting your head around how wine operates, where files like to live, and where programs point to is a little bit of a learning experience

lyric hatch
#

Really depends on the games you play, was like a running joke with a friend of ours everytime he had to reboot into windows to play games with us

digital cliff
#

another thing is trying to run a windows program there's no lutris script or whatever for, and then having to figure out what libraries you need and what windows components you have to install to make it work

reef patrol
#

That would be my main concern. (Having to reboot constantly - especially now that DDR5 30-60second RAM tuning is a thing regularly)

crimson wigeon
#

At this point I mostly say no to those since almost all of them are just infested with malware-like anticheat and fuck those games anyway they are rarely worth playing

#

Only exist to make you mad

digital cliff
#

yeah the newest competitive AAA games and such are a valid pain point with the anticheats and stuff, those have a way worse track record for now but I feel like most anticheats work through wine now

lyric hatch
#

It was anti cheat + modded games + just niche titles

crimson wigeon
#

Until they pull the plug, see: Apex

lyric hatch
#

Although this was a while ago proton has advanced quite a bit

digital cliff
#

yeah, I'll admit I don't play any of those games ever so that's never an issue for me. but for those who do, probably not worth it to try moving to linux

AMD FSR4 only on Radeon RX 9070 series? AMD confirms Machine Learning-based FSR update.  The FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) is officially here, or at least, the slides suggest it is ready. AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and non-XT Series announced Today is only the announcement, no specs, performance, pricing, or release date.  First, AMD did, in fact, leak its Radeon RX 9070 reference design. And then if they did, right after making that statement, it'd be a bad look

Those low energy chips get incremental upgrades anyways

#

Like +10% or so perf per generation

#

There's no need for Valve to rush out a new product

ashen spindle

I mean it would got from zen2 to zen5 that would have been more than 10%

cursive summit

Well yes for Valve it's a far bigger leap, they are very behind

With its use of DirectStorage 1.2 and high-end ray tracing, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is a cutting-edge PC release aiming to match and exceed the PlayStation 5 version of the game. There's much to commend here, but it's another PC release that arrives with users with bugs and issues that suggest that the game isn't quite finished.
