I dont quite remember, was there an ethernet spec that makes more sense to use for an outdoor cable or is it all the sam if I used an armored cable or put it into a duct?

#

dont remember if something like 5e or 6a just increases the signal or also makes it more robust

old marlin
#

Technically higher spec should be more robust

#

Doubt it makes a big difference though

ashen spindle
#

I think I still have leftover cable ducts so I just put it inside that and should be fine

#

nah no high speed needed

umbral heron
#

96M per CCD HanaSweats

astral haven
#

heck yea!

#

im still waiting on a motherboard tho ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

ashen spindle
#

should be on monday

#

for x870 I mean, maybe one of them is good

umbral heron
#

Time to upgrade to 9950X3D once it releases SilvervaleCool

old marlin
#

so the 9800x3d will have more vcache per CCD?

dull hollow
ashen spindle
#

800 is single CCD

umbral heron
#

7800X3D has 96M too hanaSusSips

old marlin
#

while the other have 128 in 2

#

so the 800 has 50% more per CCD?

ashen spindle
#

different amount of base L3 cache

umbral heron
#

96+32 in 7950X3D
So 9800 will most likely have 96M too

old marlin
ashen spindle
#

oh wait thats the combined one uhhh

old marlin
#

unless they have a mirrored cache per CCD

#

and that is 128MB

umbral heron
#

I am confusion

ashen spindle
#

two options, its 64mb on both then or its bridged and 128 that both can access maybe

astral haven
#

thats kinda scarey, if its dropping from 96 to 64 that could hurt

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

maybe that allows higher clocks

astral haven
#

maybe, but if its thinner, it may be prone to cracking

ashen spindle
#

dont think its thinner just more dark silicon to transfer the heat

#

so the dimensions of a 64 and 96mb cache chiplet would be the same

astral haven
#

that makes sense, the 96m is 3 layers tall?

#

i thought that x3d was a single layer

ashen spindle
#

we dont know if its the same chiplet as before

#

since the base l3 in zen5 has shrunk quite a lot it could be a different layout

#

physically shrunk, not the amount

astral haven
#

yea but i thought the stacking process was far too expensive to be usable for now

#

cause the yield compounds

ashen spindle
#

guess we will see when we know the prices xD

astral haven
#

yup

#

i do kinda wish they had gone 20 cores, x3d ccd + z5c ccd

8 x3d cores and 2x6 z5? Think

astral haven
ashen spindle

wouldnt fit in the socket

umbral heron

ashen spindle
#

and would have needed a new iod likely

umbral heron
#

Other than that maybe 9900x could use it evilShrug

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

the client iod can probably only connect to 2 ccds

astral haven
#

Yea

#

So 1 zen5x3d, 1 zen5c

ashen spindle
#

idk if it can connect to c cores, and the c cores chiplet would be too big for the socket still probably

astral haven
#

Which is why I said 12c not 16c but it does in fact physically fit rn

ashen spindle
#

does 12c fit if we a ssume they make a custom die for that? idk the dimensions

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

you need to look at zen5 cores they are bigger

astral haven
#

16c would probably fit assuming 5c is as efficient as 4c and 12c would be ez even if it's worsr

ashen spindle
#

can use zen4 numbers

astral haven
#

Yea but zen5c isn't out yet no?

ashen spindle
#

there are die shots of turin and turin-d

#

when lisa showed it first at computex

astral haven
#

Holding up on stage isn't condusive to mm sizing

ashen spindle
#

yeah but we know socket sizes and all can can make out from that if the entire chiplet is bigger or not

#

not accurate but that its bigger

astral haven

It is bigger for sure

Linux has always been trying to make janky hacks to fix Nvidia driver issues

#

Nvidia won't fix them

steep creek

ill just stick to windows for now and keep arch as my second os

wheat plume

Nvidia are actually making useable Linux drivers now????

#

But they are proprietary
No one else can work on them

nimble canopy
# digital cliff yep

what are you using for idle and lockscreen / turning the screen off when locked for a few seconds
on my end after it turns the screen of and i after a like half an hour when i want to use my computer it just crashes and i have to basicly restart the computer?

wheat plume
#

Nouveau is garbage though

#

Oh?

#

Oo......

#

WTF that's unexpected af

digital cliff
#

well, my untroubleshooteable bugs:

  1. my mouse literally won't work on booting my PC unless I replug it, it's like a 1/10 chance it won't and system journal just gives an undescript error nobody on the internet or documentation knows anything about
  2. sound in discord or applications keeps randomly disappearing, there's also no guaranteed way to reproduce this. either chromium, firefox or app discord can work, or they might not. sometimes it's the game audio that disappears, other times it's discord audio.
  3. electrom/chromium sucks and functionality in them is again a dice roll, IME doesn't work or does work, capslock as backspace doesn't really work (important for my layout)
wheat plume
#

But very welcome

#

What mouse?!

nimble canopy
digital cliff
#

maybe your windowmanager/de has sort of an "ecosystem" way of doing it

nimble canopy
#

nah im talking about using hyprland

digital cliff
#

just a normal mouse really

wheat plume
#

I used to have a Mad Catz mouse
And it didn't like Linux
Any time I tried to right click, the entire desktop would freeze and spam right click

#

Yeh xd

#

I had the Rat 7

#

The only distro that didn't have an issue with it was SolusOS

digital cliff
#

literally the "ecosystem" ways of doing it :>

#

I don't really see a need for these things, I can just leave my screen on and unlocked all the time personally

nimble canopy
#

well maybe in 6 month it will be usable

#

yea kde is nice as a just works

#

but man that tiling is nice

digital cliff
#

perhaps. but then that leads me to complain about having "options" again if solution is to just use the one DE that works

#

my point exactly being that if there was one big standard that just always worked, we wouldn't have all these issues

wheat plume
#

Gnome
Plasma
Cinnamon

#

Those all work

#

Budgie desktop doesn't really count cause that's just GNOME with a different shell

wheat plume
#

Most use gnome?

digital cliff
#

tell you what, I'll give KDE a go but I'll be really sad when I can't get it to tile like I want

frozen ingot
#

wholly depends on what else you got going on with your system

digital cliff
#

I know, last I checked they sucked

#

but maybe things are better now

wheat plume
#

They still mostly suck

digital cliff
#

it was like 3 years ago

wheat plume
#

Isn't bismuth the new main tiling plugin?

ashen spindle
# frozen ingot it is though

DDR5 post times increased it a bit so it shifted whatโ€™s a fast startup, also sleep vs actual reboot etc.

#

Shows me like 14-16s in task manager usually which is quite nice

wheat plume
#

Also
Windows doesn't actually fully turn off the system when you click shutdown

ashen spindle
#

It does if you set it to do so

digital cliff
#

if I kick the kde statusbar and use my own, can I tell the windows not to tile over the bar I have

wheat plume
#

Yeah by turning off Fast Boot
But that's on by default and it's hard to find in the control panel

digital cliff
#

good

frozen ingot
#

right my systems have varied a lot in boot up time over the years

ashen spindle
#

Okay but this isnโ€™t about defaults or if itโ€™s easy to find its about what changes in post times due to newer hardware

wheat plume
#

I'm not arguing hardware
I'm saying that Windows, by default, do NOT fully power off the system when you click shutdown

halcyon moss
#

A non issue for 99%

wheat plume
iron wave
#

Oh yeah I recently turned fast boot off myself.

#

It's so stupid that it leaves NTFS dirty.

wheat plume
#

Yep

#

And can cause issues if you unplug your computer

iron wave
#

That has never affected me.

wheat plume
#

I wish I didn't have to unplug my computer overnight
But coil whine is unbearable to me when trying to sleep

iron wave
#

Your PSU's standby circuit whines?

wheat plume
#

You can use kwin standalone??

wheat plume
iron wave
#

That shouldn't have any power with the computer off. concern

ashen spindle
#

If your computer has coilwhine when shut down go to bios and disable stuff like usb power being on and that should eliminate it

wheat plume
#

Actually NVM
I just remembered DeepinOS uses kwin

wheat plume
#

The monitor power brick also has whine

iron wave
#

Speaking of power stuff though, who's looking forward to 12VO?

ashen spindle
#

If you have a bad psu maybe a few minutes from capacitors discharging but shouldnโ€™t make any noise after

wheat plume
#

But I have the monitor on a different plug

iron wave
wheat plume
#

Another reason I wish I didn't have my computer in my bedroom

ashen spindle
wheat plume
#

I'm very very sensitive to high pitched noises

ashen spindle
#

Get one of these and you just hit the switch and donโ€™t need to unplug shit

iron wave
ashen spindle
iron wave
#

That's not a good solution.

ashen spindle
#

Itโ€™s mostly on idle and such

iron wave

Yeah I know.

wheat plume

But I'm not using my computer most of the time.

frozen ingot

Hot hatches are the perfect balance between fun and practicallity. Small enough to not be a nuisance to drive in the city, big enough to actually fit 4 adults and luggage. Enough power to zip about, but economical if you drive chill.

Better fuel efficiency

frozen ingot

now that's how a small car should look

#

shame I don't fit in a lot of small cars

:eternalScreaming:

steep creek

on macos, and ios i guess

final flame
#

it's because they make standard guidelines
windows has them too, they're just not implemented as often, there's quite a few apps that do have them though

steep creek
#

yep thats true. i notice some on windows but not as many as my apple devices

wheat plume
#

Linux also has a standard way to let apps access the system theme and accent color

final flame
#

twinkle tray for example, it uses mica though so it's a bit weird

#

a friend also sent me this mockup of what photoshop would look like if it used the windows app design guidelines

#

personally I find windows 11 to be far better looking than macOS, it's more refined and has less oddities

#

macOS has random odd choices that I can't help but think are oversights and weird inconsistencies that make no real sense

wheat plume

I prefer MacOS tbh

final flame

If they start selling them with at least 16gb RAM
Id consider them great

Don't wanna have to tack on 200 to the price just to get enough RAM on my damn laptop
