They know that people want a 'AMD good, Intel bad' thumbnail so that's what they'll give them. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

i may support the claim LTT uses very over the top titles and thumbnails but other than that i dont think they fake the numbers or dont do the review you came for

gusty kiln

Seems like the 7800x3d will still be the top seller for the rest of the year

#

Der8aur unlocked pbo got the 9700X productivity scores improves upwards of 30%

#

9950X would be a monster productivity cpu

vagrant pagoda
#

Seems like 9800x3d is really really good

#

Wonder if amd is just being super conservative as to not have the same issue as Intel

gusty kiln
#

But the 9700x power unlocked was still barely faster than the 7700x

#

In gaming

#

Became like 5-10%

#

Unless they do some fancy tweaking, doesn't feel like the 9800x3d still be majorly faster than the 7800x3d

vagrant pagoda
#

Zen5 is more efficient, and x3d is hamstrung by power limits

#

9700x is more efficient than the 7800x3d

#

With x3d less power is almost always more performance, if you ever undervolted one it's pretty good gains

ashen spindle
#

my personal guess of them having no or less clock penality on x3d this gen really seems more likely which would be really nice

vagrant pagoda
#

I mean the 9700x is lower all core than the 7800x3d

ashen spindle
#

well I was reminded of this slide

vagrant pagoda
#

But it's almost 700 vs 800

ashen spindle
#

and the reason clocks are lower is mostly for thermals to not kill the cache

vagrant pagoda
#

Why would 9700 worry about cache?

#

The 9700x has a lower all core clock than the 7800x3d, the 7800x3d is only lower in single core turbo

ashen spindle
#

talking about x3d having lower clocks than the non vcache parts

vagrant pagoda
#

Yes and that's not the issue here

#

It's the clock regression going into zen5

#

Meana without pbo on x3D it could be rough

ashen spindle
#

well with how we get more and more we might have full pbo and other features on x3d this time around

Hi guys can someone send me a link with a cable that I can use for the tachyon mode in black that would be really nice?

north tide
north tide
#

Steve from GN has bought several of those parts which have the issue and is doing a video on them soon

ashen spindle
#

I mean so far we dont have any evidence <65W or laptop parts are hit

north tide
#

We do

#

it's in some cases the same silicon with the same microcode, but ultimately at the end of the day a bunch of people have parts that used to work and don't work now.

ashen spindle
#

is there any place aside from alderon games that claims they have higher than normal failure rate on laptop parts or <65W parts

north tide
#

loads of media and

#

Steve from GN has bought several of those parts which have the issue and is doing a video on them soon

ashen spindle
#

got a link to one of them

north tide
ashen spindle
#

bc most media I can find about it all just links it back to alderon claiming it

#

no I mean to a claim that those are hit and not a future video

north tide
#

only from individual users

ashen spindle
#

so no real indication

pastel nacelle
#

Hi Aeryn

#

:D

north tide
#

no real indication that they're not affected, minor indications that they explitly are, and being looked into at the highest level

north tide
ashen spindle
#

which means there is no point assuming intel is lying about it

north tide
#

Intel said that many of the parts on the current list weren't affected (until they were).

pastel nacelle
north tide
#

It costs them money to put parts on that list, so they don't do it until there is overwhelming evidence

north tide
ashen spindle
#

nah doesnt cost them much

#

especially if its the budget parts that would have a tiny failure rate anyway

north tide
#

The biggest problem is raptor lake hx which is basically a 13900k/14900k in laptop packaging

#

same silicon and microcode, same failures

#

it's very expensive

ashen spindle
#

yeah

north tide
#

even more so because people have to ship the whole laptop to have it serviced/replaced (and it's soldered in)

ashen spindle
#

luckily for intel those arent sold as much and they have MTL laptops and LNL soon unlike raptor where there is not MTL-S as replacement or current sales filler

With the recent reviews I donโ€™t know if a 9800X3D will have any serious generational uplift.

north tide
#

Zen5 actually needs more power than Zen4 to perform at its best safe levels

#

so when you compare zen5 @ 88w to zen4 at 142w, it looks bad.

#

but zen5 @ 160w vs zen4 at 142w, boom 20 percent better.

ashen spindle
#

Zen5 seems even more memory limited so x3d could even be a bigger uplift than usual

north tide
#

Yeah and more gains from mem OC.

ashen spindle
#

well you wont be able to get higher mem OC though

north tide
#

With the same mem OC, performance delta is bigger

#

e.g. going from 5200 jedec to 6000's with all timings tuned is +40% on zen4 but over +50% on zen5, on the same sensitive workloads

#

improve the core without improving the mem, and workloads are more mem bound

astral haven
#

I dont think thats quite right

vagrant pagoda
#

Ok this is a new one

#

Pretty sure my riser shit the bed mid game

astral haven
north tide
#

most of the memory performance gains aren't achieved by expo

astral haven
#

flat 36s isnt a slouch

north tide
#

Yes it is.

#

The EXPO on here is 6000 cl30, it doesn't set many of the most important memory timings (EXPO and XMP in general cannot) so performance is crap and much less than half of what is achieved with actual overclocking

vagrant pagoda
#

Like GPU dropped out

#

Thought it died, but it works directly in slot

#

Crazy shit

north tide
astral haven
#

plx risers for the win, if only they were affordable again

ashen spindle
# north tide

I wonder if ddr5-8000 or I guess 7800 will be beneficial above running it in 1:1 for zen5 to a bigger extent

vagrant pagoda
#

Fractals riser toi

#

Wonder if they warranty it

north tide
#

If you say zen5 is 20% more mem-scaling sensitive than zen4, then 6000cl30 OC gives +15% on zen4 and +18% on zen5.

If you scale that to the best OC possible, it's +40 vs +48%. That's an easier to show delta. People did that basic testing on engineering samples a few months ago, dropping into the same boards with the same memory and a basically identical IOD.

#

they should

ashen spindle
#

well if the 9800x3d is good enough I'll get that and I might poke around some mem oc on that for fun so I'll know

north tide
#

i do expect it to be around 20% better, and you should see a much better representation of Z5 pop up over the next week or so especially with the full powerlimit NDA's popping on the 15'th(?)

astral haven
#

same, altho im not sure ill upgrade pc depending on date of deckard and samsung vision pro

ashen spindle
#

well would just be cpu upgrade for me

#

yeah I'm waiting for mysticals full writeup on y cruncher and his tests in a week

north tide
#

it is kind of disappointing for sure but i've seen enough to know that it's a solid gen and will have good response to OC tuning

#

ycruncher might go +50% or something ๐Ÿ˜›

#

but i don't ycrunch for fun or work

ashen spindle
#

its disappointing for games yea but it's actually impressive what it can get in workloads

vagrant pagoda
#

The pbo for zen5 is good

#

I really think the low clocks are a reaction to Intel's issues

#

AMD wanted to make sure they were 100% stable

north tide
#

I think they massively misread the room

ashen spindle
vagrant pagoda
#

Tons of boards are running zen 5 with too high of flck

ashen spindle
#

no I think they read the room very well for servers

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

and servers is the big margin

north tide
#

For servers yes, but they use the same CCD on servers and client

#

and the client products always had more aggressive power limits than this

ashen spindle
#

but not the same io die

north tide
#

you could never get +20% performance from just raising power limit on a 1ccd product, it hasn't happened before and probably shouldn't happen now

ashen spindle
#

also original target for zen5 were N3 which might have allowed for higher clocks

#

I think the biggest issue was that amd was still in the not enough money phase when zen5 got concepted and thats why they had to reuse the same IOD

vagrant pagoda
#

Heheh

#

Lol

north tide
#

and they probably planned from the beginning to use the same on zen4 and zen5, since on zen6 they are moving to new advanced packaging and need to rework the IOD in a major way for that

ashen spindle
#

it has already been a memory bottleneck for zen4 though so now it's just the same even more

north tide
#

ye

ashen spindle
#

and I think intel in their spot would have reworked it

#

because they just have more resources

north tide
#

The same Intel that used Skylake for 6'th, 7'th, 8'th, 9'th and 10'th gen? ๐Ÿ˜„

ashen spindle
#

well that was a issue of the node not of the SoC

north tide
#

was both, they didn't have the resources to backport or make a new arch

ashen spindle
#

hell they are doing it right now, with parts from MTL ARL and LNL using different tiles

north tide
#

they had arch for mobile but couldn't clock it past like 3.5ghz so it was useless on desktop

ashen spindle
#

also ironically intel is the biggest reason we dont see bigger zen5 gains heh

north tide
#

anyways big thing to look at is strix halo, since they're using zen5 ccd's with the new advanced packaging. We'll learn a lot about the power, bandwidth and latency changes with it. There is also a rumored change of allowing CCD's to share their cache in a meaningful way, which doesn't happen rn and would be huge for gaming

ashen spindle
#

imagine we would have had avx512 on ADL and RPL and devs would have actually made code for it

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

yeah I'm excited for halo even if I dont have any interest in products with it

#

should be a very nice APU to show whats possible from a tech point

astral haven
#

i have hopium that deckard would be max throttled halo

ashen spindle

ashen spindle

I currently have 300mbps ethernet connection from my ISP connected to an old Zyxel modem/router(which bottlenecks ethernet at 100mbps and wifi at 300mbps) and I want to upgrade my connection to 1000mbps from my ISP so I was wondering what kind of modem/router combo should I be looking for so I don't have any bottle necks and have somewhat stable internet with low latency? (extra specs: I need wired Ethernet connection to my Gaming PC and PS5 and wifi would be nice to phones, work laptop, TV, switch and ps4 etc.)

reef patrol
glass robin
#

Tbh i have no idea, I just know that I pay money to some company and internet comes out of a socket in a cabinet of my house

reef patrol
#

You don't know if your ISP provides you with a little box that gives you internet? ๐Ÿ˜„

glass robin
#

Oh yea I didn't get any little box

reef patrol
#

That is curious.

#

Well you'll need to know exactly how the internet is coming into your house. Fiber? Phoneline? Coax (cable television?) Ethernet somehow?

And then you can go from there in terms of figuring out what kind of device(s) you'll need.

glass robin
#

I know I'm getting Ethernet (comes to small cabin with ethernet distribution sockets) and it's connected to a little box (Zyxel modem/router i think? that i got from a friend) and from there it is distributed to different sockets around the house

#

So I'm guessing I would need a similar device that doesn't have the bottle necks that the current one has

reef patrol
#

If you're getting ethernet, then all you need is a router that caters to your need of 1gbit on the WAN side, as well as wifi as needed.

So that's pretty doable. ๐Ÿ™‚

reef patrol

Never been my experience. And having a device specifically to turn ethernet into wifi is just... overcomplicating things ๐Ÿ˜„

#

How do you define "shite" - I am curious.

fair gull
#

my best experience has been going from modem wifi router to custom setup with 2 APs so i can place them around the house and not do dumb wifi extending or meshing ยฏ_(ใƒ„)_/ยฏ

reef patrol
#

Meshing and all that is optional - and uh... only functional if you add additional devices anyhow ๐Ÿ˜„

#

And Meshing is great, what is wrong witchu ๐Ÿ˜›

hard pawn
#

google's mesh system is the bane of my existance

fair gull
#

shite means no granular router control, no granular switch control, wifi settings are limited, my wifi comes from where the all in one box is (which if its not high up will suck), try to mount your modem wifi router on the ceiling for good wifi coverage you have no access to the router and switch part anymore cause its 1 device, performance isnt as good as separate devices due to heat generated and PCB space not being enough to place higher quality stuff

reef patrol

Sounds like you'e applying business needs to a home ngl

fair gull

nope just traditional steel reinforced cement apartment building

#

and i cant get wifi coverage everywhere no matter what i try with the dumb all in one boxes

reef patrol
#

Anyway back to the actual topic - Feel free to offer alternatives. I was just pointing the right way to the kind of device (not) needed.

#

Since they're getting Ethernet piped in, there's no need for a modem component. ๐Ÿ™‚

umbral heron

(Though I assume this has gotten better since I sold equipment ๐Ÿ˜„ )

umbral heron
#

Yup nod But thankfully it's not the case (as much) anymore, now in almost all cases you get 1GbE both on WAN and LAN
Thankfully GbE stuff got really cheap PPalBlankies

glass robin
#

Yup, I don't mind spending some money for future scalability or doing some extra configuration for optimizing / minmaxing. So I'll take all best practises I can get to get the best bang for my buck (my home is quite small though >50m2 with walls made of paper though so probably would have a good coverage anyway)

digital cliff
fair gull
#

and thats fine but imo if you want the best then an all in one box isnt it

balmy vector

glass robin
#

So let me recap if I understood correctly, I don't need modem because I get Ethernet piped in (but at some places that is required) but I need a router (need to check for GbE ports aka that WAN and LAN ports are atleast 1000mbit). And then I need to check for coverage if I need to get some access points

#

my man just listed companies

umbral heron
#

Wasn't AKG bought by Samsung?

sharp badger
#

Got the Maxwells myself. Options could be K-371, Meze 99 , Hi-X60, HiFiMan Edition XS, Sennheiser HD800 S etc.

Oh should've said Sundara, HD820 instead then

final flame
#

it's tonality is completely messed up

fair gull
old marlin
#

giggle I assume HD820 are about 10 times of what tony wants to spend for argualby sennheisers worst deal since they neither sound good nor have the sound stage that people want HD800s for

#

and sundaras don't even have swivel adjust

old marlin
#

like all closed back hifimans

sharp badger
#

It was just headphones that came up to mind but yeah

fair gull
#

arent the 820 like 2grand

final flame
#

yes

fair gull
#

i dont wanna spend 2grand every 2 years

final flame
#

they'll last, but they don't sound good to begin with

#

sennhesier has some of the best build quality when it comes to headphones

#

only Sennheiser closed backs that seem good are the hd569 and the 620s

sharp badger
#

There are cheaper alternatives too

#

Yeah was gonna say the 620S

#

Still have a pair of AKG K550 MKII which are still kicking

fair gull
#

the 620s has a really weird hump around 100-120hz

#

unsure what happened there

#

more like 150hz actually i cant read

#

also this weird drop

digital cliff
#

well you listen with your ears and not your eyes

#

maybe you'll like it

fair gull
#

well number 1 is a channel mismatch (i think) and could just be the specific pair tested

#

the second one ill prob have to EQ out which was one of the only things i didnt like on the 840 where from 60-140hz theres an EQ required to flatten it

digital cliff
#

"I'm not an audiophile"

proceeds to be extremely specific about headphone response

#

it sounds like you know exactly what you want so time to browse headphones I suppose

quaint dew
#

ms paint is kinda cracked at to scale drawing

fair gull
#

no idea what im looking at

quaint dew
#

just planning a desk setup

#

lines are cables

digital cliff
#

you needed a drawing to figure out how to route 2 cables

quaint dew
#

tried to get their lengths right as well

digital cliff
quaint dew
#

and impedance adapter (orange thing)

#

+mousepad room

digital cliff
#

how did you ensure everything is to scale

quaint dew
#

ms paint when you draw the boxes gives you a pixel count

#

i just set 1m=1000px

sharp badger
#

Head movement & height?

quaint dew
digital cliff
#

what if you lean back

quaint dew
#

the iem cable before impedance adapter is 1.2m

fair gull
quaint dew
#

that length is around 80cm

#

worst case scenario i just move impedance adapter closer

#

its a 2m male to female 3.5 extension cable

digital cliff
#

so you have 3 meters of cable

quaint dew
#

yeah

digital cliff
#

I don't think that needed a drawing

quaint dew
#

might not even need the 10ohm adapter lmao

fair gull
#

lol

digital cliff
#

it's like, enough for literally any situation unless your pc is in the other room

fair gull
#

why are you even getting an adapter for IEMs

quaint dew
#

also wanted to confirm mousepad/deskmat size and placement

fair gull
#

your phone can run those why wouldnt your pc

quaint dew
#

truthear red
its an impedance adapter, increases bass

#

10ohm

fair gull
#

thats not what an impedance adapter does

quaint dew
#

i mean

#

thats what they say it does

#

yes technically it reduces treble in this case

fair gull
#

they literally just lower the volume basically

digital cliff
fair gull
#

it will most likely lower the volume on a pc
