Elden Ring inspired graphics card from Gunnir A Chinese GPU maker announces a new custom model. If any company is making custom variants of Intel Arc GPUs, it is likely Gunnir. This company has the largest established lineup of Arc Alchemist desktop GPU series and seems committed to delivering more custom variants. Gunnir already offers […]

@astral haven so both memtest pro and occt cant find issues. memtestpro on the dimms and occt on vram/load (did a combined test to make sure its the gpu overall or not)

astral haven
#

cant, interesting

#

sounds like ddu time

fair gull
#

already did yesterday but after that still got a bsod relating to the same driver nvlddmkm or whatever its called

#

just the bug check changed from video tdr fault to system threat exception

#

also changing the stack ofc so now the error was from ntoskernel not dxgkernel

astral haven
#

have you run sfc /scannow and dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth?

fair gull
#

yes yes

astral haven
#

ripperoni i have zero idea then

fair gull
#

actually first before ddu and then again after cause i though a bsod might have crapped the files

sharp badger
#

Have you tried swapping the GPU?

reef patrol
#

When in doubt, grab an old HDD or something and do a clean install to compare

fair gull
#

not yet cause i wanted a setup to replicate the crash reliably

#

the thing is it happened yesterday withing minutes of boot once.... then not again the entire evening

#

same for the last weekend. happened once and then not again for 3 days

fair gull
reef patrol
#

Reminds me of my issues with mixing RAM on my 5600X. So glad I got that swapped out.

fair gull
#

ram was my first suspect since thats often the culprit for such off sometime errors

astral haven
#

yea, its strange that there arent any errors from memtest or occt...

fair gull
#

also rechecked that i dont have any OC on the cpu or such

#

the only oc if we can call it that is XMP

#

i also thought about reflashing the GPU bios with a programmer

reef patrol
#

If I removed one set, it was stable but I only had 16GB of RAM.

#

Can't say I've had that ever.

fair gull
#

in my case its the same set of sticks since day 1 which is paired corsair dimms from the same set

ashen spindle
#

no xmp means you run jedec and dont need to do memory training on reboot so that tracks, and most xmp settings are garbage anway for secondary timings onwards so that tracks

astral haven
#

thats pretty normal

#

am5 just has dramatically slower training than other platforms so you notice it more, but on mem configs with more than 128gb or more than 8 sticks it gets real slow

reef patrol
#

Aka. the infamous "oh no POST for a full minute, cause haha fuck you this is DDR5"

ashen spindle
#

eh that first long training has been drastically improved

reef patrol
#

Can't say I can recognize that. It took my PC a minute and a half to POST the first time.

astral haven
reef patrol
ashen spindle
#

the solution is manual timings or just run jedec and increase resolution till you are gpu limited dogekek

astral haven
#

theres 100+ parameters per stick that get tuned on the back end, and something like 15? of them get saved

reef patrol
#

You'd think an XMP profile was... well... a preset 😄

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

oh it is but lots of settings are set to auto and not specific values

#

just hope like me that with lpcamm we get less memory OC so it wont be an issue dogekek

astral haven
reef patrol
#

Sure. And when it has successfully timed right and booted, a sane person would assume it to store those for the next time 😄

astral haven
#

and the interactions between the controller, motherboard, and sticks are complex

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

expo is also saved on the stick and read from it not on the board so you dont want to override that

fair gull
#

so digging into the memory dump the reason i got a system thread exception was that nvlddmkm tried to access memory but that failed

#

pretty sure it somehow tried to read inaccessible memory

#

@astral haven apparently today it just takes longer

#

i guess i won the lottery

reef patrol
fair gull
#

cant computex come faster and the release of new gpus/cpus as well

ashen spindle
#

if its vram error could resolder the chips if you have a place that can do that around

#

if its the actual chips

fair gull
#

wish there was smth like memtest that shows the chips causing the errors

astral haven
#

im pretty sure there is a tool that does it? its just omega jank, and its probably the memory controller not the chips that died

#

try dropping the frequency, 500mhz will noiceably drop performance but youll still be around 2080super level

fair gull
#

vram freq you mean?

astral haven
#

ye

fair gull
#

i assume buttburner by msi is still the preferred tool for this?

astral haven
#

if you have geforce experience installed, you can use that built in tool but otherwise yea

fair gull
#

i didnt reinstall it when doing the DDU

astral haven
#

then afterburner it is

fair gull
#

interesting that unlike other errors its only a handful and not thousands

astral haven
#

nvidia has built in error correction

#

you are only seeing the errors that get past the correction

fair gull
#

wonder why it didnt bsod during occt though

#

if this is the reason for the crashes

#

ok no further errors except those 9

astral haven
#

occt tries to not crash, crashing is inconvenient for fixing stability issues

@ashen spindle whats the confidence of 512b actually happening this time, or are the rumors yesterday standard real leak bait

ashen spindle

of what

#

there is so much shit coming out you need to specify xD

astral haven

blackwell 32gb/512b bus

ashen spindle

oh blackwell we know basically nothing of still

#

for consumer I should clarify, data center we got some things but thats not really saying anything for consumer variants

#

we know its monolithic, very dense and different pcbs for different skus

astral haven
#

i hope for 512b bus, mem bw go brr

ashen spindle
#

at first it was said it was the first real rework of the cores since volta but thats been more vague as of late, which I speculate means they might have pulled in a smaller redesign and call that blackwell and rubin is the original rework but really not much to go about

ashen spindle

?

unkempt lake
#

7800x3ds run hot

ashen spindle
#

and?

unkempt lake
#

Would be nice to see improvements for TDP

ashen spindle
#

temperature!=tdp

#

200W can end up at 30C and 20w can end up at 100C

unkempt lake
#

Tdp = releases more warm air around

#

Because power = heat

#

9700k @5ghz and 7900xtx is already a furnace

ashen spindle
#

7800x3d draw almost half the power of a 9700k

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

if I compare peak the 9700k goes even higher

unkempt lake
#

I have my 9700k at like 125w with my OC

astral haven
unkempt lake
ashen spindle
#

and the 7800x3d in gaming is like 70w top

unkempt lake
#

Then again im running it at 5.0 avx

#

Kinda expected

astral haven
#

yikes thats more than my 9900k was drawing at 5g allcore with power savings off

unkempt lake
#

Or sse with an offset

astral haven
#

no, in game

#

0 avx offset

#

in allcore avx i could easily hit 300w

ashen spindle
#

it gets warmer by design due to the heatspreader on am5, it doesnt actually cause more heat into the room because thats where temperature!= powerdraw

unkempt lake
#

9700k does use more voltage than 9900k @astral haven

#

They're the bad 9900k bins basically

ashen spindle
#

a 100C 7800x3d causes like half the heat build up in a room vs a 80C 13900k

astral haven
#

and it should use less current since you have 20% less total bandwidth

unkempt lake
#

Alao you're running like a 2080 ti @astral haven

#

I'm running a 7900xtx

#

My cpu gets pushed to its limits

astral haven
#

i was runing a 3090

#

although it actually used more power when i was using the 1060, because i wasnt playing on high graphics pretty much ever

unkempt lake
#

Also im saying 125w in like

#

Cpu intense games

#

Like HD2

#

Or doing a blender render

astral haven
#

yea in blender i was sucking back 300w ez pz

unkempt lake
#

In other games im more at like

#

110w?

astral haven
#

what would you say the average is

#

heres the 7800x3d

ashen spindle
#

tahts application not gaming

astral haven
#

oh oops

#

same average

ashen spindle
#

huh igors test had them like 15W more even

unkempt lake
#

Also

#

@ashen spindle my 7900xtx upgrade makes my breaker trip

ashen spindle
#

lol

astral haven
#

here be le setup

unkempt lake
#

I have 2 rigs
9400f + 2080
9700k + 7900xtx

#

Installes the ac

#

Plugged it in like usual

#

We start playing

#

Breaker pops

#

Then i realized

#

Ac takes 1000w

ashen spindle
#

anyway youy 9700k would be at the bottom of this part of the chart

balmy vector
#

Breaker cant handle the gaming power

unkempt lake
#

7900xtx on its own takes 400w

ashen spindle
#

ok yeah if you have an AC that draws a lot

unkempt lake
#

Residential breaker is 1800w

#

So...

#

Yeah

#

Wasn't an issue when i had a 2080 and nico had a 1660 lol

#

So i literally... ran an extension across the house

#

Down the stairs

#

So i can use a different breaker for the ac

#

Lmao

#

Dw i used a thick ass gauge

#

So its safe

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

well just based on the claimed powerdraw, ignoring stock

astral haven
#

wdym

#

the claimed power draw in that graph is 110w

ashen spindle
#

point is the 9800x3d might cause just half the heating the current one does

astral haven
#

suppose you had a stock bulldozer and the user was saying 125w, what would the gaming power draw be

ashen spindle
#

given its 125 in helldivers im just taking that

unkempt lake
#

I'm fairly hyped for 9000

astral haven
unkempt lake
#

Been itching for that upgrade

#

Then nico can use my 9700k in his rig

astral haven
#

the 10900k is only 112 there

unkempt lake
#

To replsce his 9400f

ashen spindle
#

yes thats my point dashi said its 125 so I just said based on that chart a new cpu doesnt need much better thermal management since it would raw around the same as the 78x3d that was all xD

balmy vector
#

I know whenever i upgrade years later ill most likely go amd

smoky frigate
#

yeah safe bet

ashen spindle
#

nah, always check what makes sense at the time

unkempt lake
#

Brand loyality bad

ashen spindle
#

they can make a second bulldozer any time

balmy vector
#

Yeah if they keep doing good

astral haven
#

amd is known for 3 steps forward 2 steps back...

#

this generation of 4 steps forward is very much an outlier

balmy vector
#

We’ll see how time goes on for sure

smoky frigate
#

pfffffffttttttt

ashen spindle
#

nah that tracks just with no additonal info it seems insane

smoky frigate
#

compared to the 2020 baseline

ashen spindle
#

yup

#

and on HPC and Ai training, not generic cpus or gpu tasks

astral haven
#

the actual PR
"Prioritizing energy efficiency at AMD is not new. In fact, we voluntarily set a goal for ourselves in 2014 to accelerate the typical use energy efficiency of our mobile processors to 25x by 2020. We met this goal and exceeded it by achieving a 31.7x improvement.

Last year we announced a new vision - a 30x25 goal - to achieve 30x energy efficiency improvement by 2025 from a 2020 baseline for our accelerated data center compute nodes."

ashen spindle
#

so basically mi400-next would hit that time

ashen spindle
#

no thats the 2022 update not the one from yesterday

astral haven
#

is there anything new there?

smoky frigate
#

I'll believe it when I see it

#

it's a hard claim is all

astral haven
#

how?

ashen spindle
#

I mean they started with 25x by 2020 back in 2014 and his that with 30something%

distant tapir
#

I just close my eyes when companies show self-produced charts.

ashen spindle
#

now they are shortly before 25 and mi350 is probably reaching the 30x by 25 later this year already

#

so going 2-3 years later in a not that much higher trajactory isn't unlikely

#

what happend is I imagine they got final number for el capitan with full build and are confident they can now hit these numbers

astral haven
#

its also worth noting that this isnt cpus, this is cpus + 4 gpus

ashen spindle
#

node level, so basically linpack performance per watt

#

so gpu, cpu, interconnect

astral haven
#

and gpus tend to be just about doubling in efficiency every 18 months already, and amd was pretty far behind in 2020

#

gotta remember this is just improvement, not absolute

ashen spindle
#

yeah if they had told anyone what the plan was for mi300 in 2020 most people would have not trusted them to execute at all

#

basically it is ambitious but doesnt really say anything new and still is just marketing but not outlandish claims

astral haven
#

what is the fp4 or int4 on mi300?

ashen spindle
#

idk if it has fp4/int4

astral haven
#

theres zero shot it has no support

#

worst case its 1:1 with int8/fp8

ashen spindle
#

the microsoft azure instance are avaialable now for people so I assume the chips&cheese people to make test runs in coming time

#

yeah I meant idk if it hs explicit int/fp4

astral haven
#

whats int8

ashen spindle
thick elk
#

Not a fan of the slide, red below makes it look like a performance drop at a glance.

astral haven
#

yea so excluding amds awful software support for ai, they are in the hole about 50% vs nvidia at int8, and assumging 1:2 they are in the hole ~ 10x for int/fp4

ashen spindle
#

have it in other color then dogekek

astral haven
#

if they have no int/fp4, 20x

thick elk
#

Less terrible but still they should probably fire the guy designing these slides

ashen spindle
#

where are you getting the int8/4 numbers for nvidia from

astral haven
#

b100

ashen spindle
#

oh pft thats not out yet

#

if you look at blackwell that would need to be compared to mi350 at least since delivery dates for those are much closer

astral haven
#

arent you thinking of b200?

ashen spindle
#

no?

#

h200 is starting shipping this quarter or did idk

#

blackwell isnt out yet

astral haven
#

blackwell is running privately outside of nvidia now...

#

pretty sure openai is running on them now

ashen spindle
#

where

#

I know they will get one of the first dgx pods but last I checked they didnt have anything yet either

#

are you mistaken it with this

#

thats from exactly 1 month ago

#

so h200 literally just started being shipped

astral haven
#

🤷 thats still not pretty for amd with h200 being 1.5x the perf of h100 for openai

#

but im pretty sure that the whispers were about b100

reef patrol
ashen spindle
#

ok but it doesnt change in8/fp8 compared to h100 so the comparison is still not vs b100/200 xD

astral haven
#

thats fair, if nvidia actually isnt delivering b100 like they said and amd is delivering mi300 then sure its vs h200

#

but im pretty sure its a standard nvidia dealio of you can get a few current gen chips if you sign an nda rather than the open market stuff

ashen spindle
#

yeah but then we can compare the first mi300 that el capitain got as well and then timelines shift for both sides

astral haven
#

yea tru

#

wtf did nvidia release in 2020???

#

was it just v100 but double memory???

ashen spindle
#

a100

astral haven
#

how tf did i forget that lmao

#

so 1.2 pflops to 20 pflops in 5 years

#

oop thats with double the power

#

so 2.4 to 20 in 5 years

ashen spindle
#

oh yeah power is going up nexr gens too quite a lot havo

astral haven
#

1.5x perf per year for nvidia from 20-27 making for a total of around 20x
what did amd have at that time?

#

mi100 out yet?

ashen spindle
#

ooof I dont remember timelines for the older instinct cards

astral haven
#

barely according to amd

#

lets give amd 3 of these

#

at .009 pflops a pop

ashen spindle
#

mi50/80/100 was also very much custom done for super computers and rest just had the option for scraps if they wanted so the comparison is a bit skewed

#

but thats how you can claim massive improvements till 27 then

astral haven
#

exactly my point

#

if nvidia hit 27p fp4 they would have only done 11x, where amd would be at 100x from that exact same performance figure

#

nvidia has no shot at getting "most improved" awards lol

ashen spindle
#

yeah but if mi400/500 can do the same mi300 did and outperform the giant company with such a track record that is a deserved most improved award xD

astral haven
#

oh wait lemme revise, mi100 could do faster fp16 than int4 🤣

astral haven
#

remember vega on paper outperforms 1080ti lol

ashen spindle
#

I mean I guess but I dont think if microsoft says its the best price/perforamce for gpu training its only doing that because they are selling them at a loss xD

astral haven
#

who at microsoft tho

ashen spindle
#

think it was satya who held the talk? idk the build keynote wasnt streamed after all

astral haven
#

yea but who sourced the info

#

if it was someone at azure 🧂

#

if it was someone at openai? maybe less doubt

ashen spindle
#

well yeah I'm not saying its a open specsheet but it's less than just a vega on paper

astral haven
#

if it turns out to be a vega vs 1080ti situation i think thats a very good outcome for amd

#

i suspect however that tensorflows insane nvidia performance isnt just currently stronk gpus...

#

i cant find any instinct numbers at all, but the 7900xtx gets wrecked by a v100

#

and the v100 gets wrecked by the 3090

ashen spindle
#

doesnt say anything, remember they split off and basically continued gcn on instinct side

astral haven
#

yea but rocm is rocm in theory

ashen spindle
#

sure and I imagine amd are really hoping Triton takes off and that fixes that

astral haven
#

and the 7900xtx should be faster than the 3090 in theory (fp16)

#

Im seeing 100 t/s on the 3090 in llama7b and as much as 25 on the xtx

#

And even considering the perf should be bandwidth bound, they should be about even

#

Not 1/4 the speed

astral haven
#

i just had a great idea
how about quantum dot retroflective displays

#

use b/w lcd with a quantum dot layer behind them that converts everything to color

steep creek
#

sorta like how eink kaleido works with the color layer afaik

astral haven
#

negatory

#

kaleido is just standard ink, not converting any light

steep creek
#

yea just on an extremely high level to visualize it

astral haven
#

yea thats what rlcds already use

steep creek
#

aha

astral haven
#

kaleido

#

swap eink panel for an lcd and a mirror and you have rlcd

steep creek
#

i see, that filter tbh while nice it gives color makes the screen dimmer than a bw panel in sunlight

astral haven
#

yep, swap them for quantum dots and in theory you can get brightness back?

#

but the quantum dots cant be in front otherwise it would just always glow lol

steep creek
#

hah

#

tho if quantum dots solves this issue it would be quite nice

#

wonder if it is feasible to produce at scale though

astral haven
#

it probably solves the issue, just can it be mass produced without cadmium, mercury, or lead

steep creek
#

i see hmm

#

well i guess i’ll just keep waiting for whenever qdel comes out, for now that seems the most promising

astral haven
#

sure, but qdel isnt gonna get us 20k nit displays, where rlcd already can

#

as can eink

steep creek
#

yeah true but i generally don’t need those except when outside in direct sunlight, or when it’s exceptionally bright

#

in light controlled areas inside should be fine without

astral haven
#

but ma power consumption

steep creek
#

drawback of eink is it’s so sluggish for scrolling or anything high movement for now

astral haven
#

rlcd for the win

steep creek
#

is rlcd better?

astral haven
#

standard 60hz with not top tier but ok for normal lcd response time

steep creek
#

well that beats eink by a long shot

astral haven
#

yep, but the brightness loss from lcd is more than you lose with eink

#

tho color vs bw lcd doesnt change much it seems

#

I am laughing pretty hard

ashen spindle

is that true?

#

because that isnt even spellinc electrode correctly in the first part

#

guess that would be one way, just compress it by randomly guessing shit for 80%

thick elk
#

That doesn't sound like the type of data that would compress well at all.
General rule of thumb, the more random the data, the harder it is to compress.
Especially if no lossy format is acceptable.

analog sinew
#

just use AI broo trust me it works bro

thick elk
#

AI could very well be a useful tool here, possibly to find patterns to help create an algorithm.

umbral heron
#

pick 200 random files
pick one random file from the set
delete remaining 199 files
repeat until desired size is achieved

#

Losslessly compresses files... at least those that are left pepeyes

thick elk
#

That being said there could be non-obvious patterns in the data that could be discovered for much larger compressibility.

smoky frigate
#

they should look more toward the idea of filtering, rather than compressing everything if they need that kind of efficiency

analog sinew
#

no you should make it for them

smoky frigate
#

oh cool algorithm bro

analog sinew

fair gull
ashen spindle
#

I mean there will be a lot of noise but they clearly said a lossless compression not a "retains all relevant information lossless" compression

thick elk
#

But yea goals are a bit unrealistic either way.

fair gull
#

i dont think we understand human brain activity well enough to just losslessly compress it

#

at least at any ratio theyd want

ashen spindle
#

depends what you use it for

fair gull
#

as far as i understand it the use case of neuralink is anything

ashen spindle
#

like if its to control a mouse movement on a pc it doesnt matter if you sometimes cut out parts for higher accuracy on average

#

since this is just a supposed test for getting a job

#

doesnt mean they dont already have some things to lower the data they actually need

thick elk
#

It is still data of multiple probes and there could very well be compressable patterns in there, it's not pure random.
I do wonder why their baseline is zip.

fair gull
#

prob cause they use windows and its the default compression

#

im glad its not winrar

thick elk
#

It's also probably just a light, neutral well known baseline, not even meant to be the best, just an example. Still if you achieve 2.2x compression. with zip data must at least be somewhat compressable.

fair gull
#

also how can the 5 second clips be 193kb and they cant just send 1 second clips via the 1mbps stream

#

im so confused if the test data is real approximations or just literally any data

ashen spindle
#

I would assume its zip so everyone can download it and work with it without needing to upload it uncompressed or have people use esoteic tools for decompression

#

and then they just took that as the first entry

fair gull
#

like the screenshot says the neuralink does 200mbps but... that would mean 5 seconds should be multiple megabytes

#

and an hour of wav would be gigabytes if not more

#

or is it recordings of a singular electrode

strange bough

strange bough

fair gull

its an estimate based on location, product, shipping option etc. so its different for different people

ashen spindle
#

yeah they have the benefit of games not working so they literalyl just added overhead because they dont have the older DX hardware havo

gusty kiln
#

Can't wait for steamOS to become mainstream

fickle ore
ashen spindle
#

not really

fickle ore
#

Well really

#

Or why do you think NV driver has so much overhead ?

#

I doubt that issue has been fixed

ashen spindle
#

its making poorly threaded titles run better and nvidia does that in software, if you run a vulkan/dx12 game the driver isnt doing any of that work so no additional overhead

#

and extra hardware blocks would only increase die size but doesnt matter if they arent used

fickle ore
#

Idk if they can make it better

#

yeah for poor threaded games it alleviates the drawcall bottleneck but still has a bit more overhead than it would without. My info could be outdated tho

ashen spindle
#

either way its not going to make much of a difference

fickle ore
#

yeah agree

astral haven
#

remember despite the "driver overhead" nvidia still ends up performing better despite having less compute

ashen spindle
#

we need to see pretty big die shrinks from intel first to have any hope they stay relevant before thinking about drivers

#

if they cant make the hardware price competetive they wont keep going

fickle ore
#

I cant even find out whether arrow lake is made on tsmc 3nb or 20A

ashen spindle
#

because its both

#

depending on sku

fickle ore
#

bc tsm wont have backside powerdelivery until 2025 so that would make the release boring for me

#

8% is a pretty big drop

astral haven
#

meh, canon survived without bsi until 2021 despite sony having it 10 years earlier

ashen spindle
#

we dont even know if bspd will make any changes for arl or if its limited by fabric or anything so meh

#

new tech is cool but if its doesnt do anything who cares as consumer

reef patrol
fickle ore
#

investing in more and more advanced nodes in Taiwan has been a risky bet

#

I know they'll have made risk assessments but I'd pay to have heard those

reef patrol
#

It's a modern version of zero sum. China wants Taiwan. Taiwan doesn't want that.

China depends on Taiwanese production, so it's a strong deterrent for now. It forces China to adapt.

woven laurel
#

mansen did u see my gif in secret. its funny as heck

ashen spindle
#

sure but legit skill issue because outside of tsmc in taiwan advanced lithography isnt working as well

#

and intel in isreal isn't the safest place either dogekek

reef patrol
#

Mhmm. I guess this also pushes the US, and* other Asian countries to back Taiwan.

No one can cope easily with the consequences

fickle ore
#

Why do they keep building them in bad places and with low water levels

gusty kiln
#

Man all the tech stocks are flying high today

ashen spindle
#

workers are in the area from other fabs, harder to find people that work what you need than it is to find water

Phoenix is getting unlivable

ashen spindle

because they have fabs already, the intel and arizone ones arent the first

time to see if loading 3dmark can replicate the bsod more consistently

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

sure but if I was forced to pick out of the israel and ireland fab, which one is in more danger I'd say thats an easy pick lol

smoky frigate
#

I'm using the new nvidia driver with VRR, works perfect
I heard that HDR is still arse piss and knowing wayland, it'll take a long time to get out of its "held together by paper clips and duct tape" phase

fickle ore
#

they rely on UK

#

But like, whats wrong with uk, northern spain, central eu etc and finland for water!

marsh pewter
smoky frigate
#

you can get it with games using gamescope but I don't know, I don't have an HDR monitor

marsh pewter
#

same

#

HDR looks great with games on the steam deck tho

#

though I've heard HDR content is horrible on linux

smoky frigate
#

yeah, if it was "the OS for HDR" I would have gotten a monitor that was capable of it

#

better save myself the headache and sit there, knowing it has a feature I cannot use lel

marsh pewter
#

yea

#

valve is doing some amazing stuff in the linux space rn tho

smoky frigate
#

if you told me 10 years ago that within the decade you'd be able to play windows games on linux at native speed and without sacrificing goats, I would have told you to lay off the crack

#

valve has done a bang-up job there

balmy vector
#

Thats some good crack

smoky frigate
#

yeah but that's kinda fucked to have installed on windows too

marsh pewter
#

yeah but thats at the fault of game devs

smoky frigate
#

I would not play a game that forces me to install stuff like this anyway

#

Origin? is that still even around?

raw zephyr
#

they call it something else now

balmy vector
#

ea app :(

marsh pewter
#

I have games with invasive AC installed on a separate windows install that I only use specifically for those games (and anything else that may require windows)

#

and I just use linux the rest of the time

balmy vector
#

apparently they even added it to PvZ garden warfare 2 i heard? saw some community stuff about it ungatothink

raw zephyr
#

i have more issues gaming on windows than on linux lol

smoky frigate
#

there's now a (command line only) launcher that replicates the steam runtime environment perfectly, and now I can even play all my totally legal backups

#

that used to be a crapshoot to do with Lutris, but now it's solved

marsh pewter
marsh pewter
raw zephyr
#

windows 11 is totally borked for me

smoky frigate
#

never even used a computer with it installed, and with Recall, you'll have to force me at gun point in the future

raw zephyr
#

dx9 games locked fps to refresh rate, spent hours trying to troubleshoot it

marsh pewter
#

recall isnt that bad

raw zephyr
#

it has to do something with emulated exclusive fullscreen that was brought in windows 11

smoky frigate
raw zephyr
#

anything older than 21h2

smoky frigate
#

oh LOL, somehow even GNOME does a better job with that then

marsh pewter
raw zephyr
#

also missing textures in quake live on win11, displays just fine under linux

#

but i guess it's more of my gpu issue

marsh pewter
#

win11 still isnt worth the upgrade tbh. that said- I do have it installed but thats only because I did a fresh install and didnt feel like installing win10 instead.

smoky frigate
#

I last had a windows install in 2018 iirc, then it somehow corrupted an audio setting. made me way more angry than linux ever could with its half-baked shit, so I shitcanned it in a gin-fueled rage and haven't looked back

#

and judging from the windows news since then, people aren't looking forward to any changes since then either

marsh pewter
#

that reminds me, I need to make my windows partition smaller and ubuntu partition bigger

raw zephyr
#

just delete it

marsh pewter
#

I cant

#

me and my friends play fortnite and valo

smoky frigate
raw zephyr
#

fortnite might run under a vm

marsh pewter
smoky frigate
#

yeah passthrough is not fun. if people keep bugging Epic enough, maybe they'll change their opinion eventually

marsh pewter
#

they wont

raw zephyr
#

thats not gonna happen lol

smoky frigate
marsh pewter
#

mr sweeney is an old douchebag that hates linux

astral haven
#

how about android emulators lol

marsh pewter
#

it sucks too because its as easy flipping a switch in EAC

raw zephyr
#

tldr: just play better games

smoky frigate
#

which was pretty rare

marsh pewter
smoky frigate
#

maybe they think supporting linux just strengthens their competition, valve

marsh pewter
#

perhaps, im really not sure

smoky frigate
#

it would make business sense to me at least

astral haven
#

i think they are busy with getting fortnite on the iphone

marsh pewter
#

from what I can tell it really is just tim sweeney being stuck up and thinking that linux is sooooo much easier to cheat on compared to windows (which isnt true) and it would ruin his precious money machine

astral haven
#

perhaps 5 million total linux users vs 1.2 billion iphone users?

smoky frigate
#

the number of linux users will grow slowly but steadily over the years I reckon, but at the moment it's still nothing

astral haven
#

"will"

smoky frigate
#

well it's been going at a steady rate over the past couple of years

astral haven
#

lol no

smoky frigate
#

whatever you say

astral haven
#

it was growing at an extremely slow rate prior to the steam deck, generally growing users but not growing %

#

steam deck doubled the userbase within 6 months, but the growth has slowed down, its still gaining, but nowhere near as fast

marsh pewter
astral haven
#

cite a source that doesnt include webcrawlers please

halcyon moss
#

android

astral haven
#

there are 3 billion android devices lol

frozen ingot
#

most of these corporations despise linux for not having the means to control it either

astral haven
#

40% of all steam linux people are using the deck, the deck has around 5-6m units which means optimistically there are 15m gamers on linux

unkempt lake
#

I just realized how funny it would be

#

If i replace my 9700k

#

With a 9700x

astral haven
# marsh pewter there are around 32.8 million linux users

problem is tho, most people dont actually use the deck despite having bought it, steam monthly active users is supposedly around 200m, tho they dont publish
linux has 1.9% of all users, which means on the lower end you are looking at 4M users
so you are somewhere between 4 and 15m users for sweeny to go after
