old marlin

also some of their scans are very off for some reason

#

ah wait eloshapes is more accurate, thought that was rtings

#

still misleading

#

3 dimensional shapes are more complex than 2 outlines, very surprising

umbral heron
#

Yeah, it's better to go to local electromarket and test whichever one you prefer

honest gull
#

Alright

old marlin

can make use of them being so big in that instance

#

you've got Unity, which is built into Ubuntu

😢 RIP Unity desktop
Hasn't been in development since 2019

ashen spindle
#

Sadly el capitan didnt make the run in time so we gotta wait for that but look at those power numbers for the full intel system now @gusty kiln

smoky frigate
#

awesome, hope it stops this nonsense now

fair gull
# wheat plume https://youtu.be/o3mIzSMizSA

i also love watching old man rant while admitting he has telemetry off so M$ couldnt even take action on how they use the OS not to mention being partially sponsored by a shady key website with the worst explanation of OEM keys

wheat plume
#

Yeah lol

ashen spindle
#

it gets even funnier though

#

I asked ANL if Aurora is expected to take the lead over Frontier in the Top500 upon completion. "There's a contractual target number that is faster than Frontier," a representative responded

#

so intel might have to pay fines if they cant fix that havo

gusty kiln
#

Giga oof

old marlin
ashen spindle
#

also its still not the full system

#

that run was like 87%

old marlin
ashen spindle
#

because the rest doesnt work yet

#

yeah and thats linpack, in operation that can go up to 60MW

#

frontier maxes out at 29MW

old marlin
#

HP REALLY loves to make intel suffer ig

ashen spindle
#

I dont think HP can even come close to fuck up as much as intel did on the project

old marlin
#

I assumed they set the contractual goals

#

but it prob won't be expensive as itanium

ashen spindle
#

the contractual goals were with intel for a system that was suppoed to run in 2018 dogekek

old marlin
#

lol

ashen spindle
#

In 2013 DOE presented their exascale vision of one exaFLOP at 20 MW by 2020.[5] Aurora was first announced in 2015 and to be finished in 2018

#

6 years later they get (almost)2 EF for >40MW

gusty kiln
#

Aurora more like A rough one

ashen spindle
#

but on the other hand once its running its the best deal argone could have made

#

because intel had to basically write off the entire system due to missed targets

#

and who doesnt like a free supercomputer

old marlin
ashen spindle
#

only negative about el capitan missing is AMD cant claim number one and two on the rankings in time for computex xD

#

oh btw frontier is on #1 since may 2022 already xD

quartz token
#

I'm looking around for a new laptop to do my video editing on. Below 2500€. Portability is a strong factor, as I will be out and about Computex in a few weeks. Anyone has some good suggestions?

I see many recommending Macbooks for this, but im kinda a windows guy myself. Not sure if the workflow might be different in that regard.

ashen spindle
#

I guess waiting for the new releases from computex doesnt work then dogekek

fair gull

just use prallelsdesktop to run windows on macos

gusty kiln

quartz token

@ashen spindle I will yoink from some vendors haha

fair gull

also quite overpriced compared to normal OEMs

quartz token
#

I am always a bit mindblown of how little VRAM the NVidia cards have in laptops

gusty kiln
#

Same on desktopdogenek

fair gull
#

maybe just some HP emone with a 4080

and then debloat the windows install

gusty kiln

Maybe a ThinkPad

ashen spindle

would probably go take a look at lenovo thinkpads

#

yeah

woven laurel

go the apple route

quartz token

Always so worried that the power bricks are so humongous 😛

fair gull
#

well

#

thats the perk of a gpu

quartz token
#

ik

#

its a bit of a pain

fair gull
#

thats new then still overpriced though

quartz token
#

Framework is a bit more pricey ye

fair gull
#

framework is a good option if there is no budget limit

woven laurel
#

why no macbook pro ? in your case its actually good.

gusty kiln
#

Also forgot no nvidia gpu on framework

quartz token
#

@woven laurel Guess workflow ain't all that different right. No hassle with needing to format anything I hope?

umbral heron

Lego laptop blobaww But yeah, Framework is pricey

woven laurel
fair gull

as mentioned can always run windows in macos if really needed

quartz token

might go that route. Didn't expect me to lean towards apple, dang

woven laurel
#

its an option.

#

check tweakers for reviews

fair gull
#

i mean given the budget and your fear of massive power bricks the macbook pro route is maybe a really good option

#

they also arent all too heavy

#

can always go to an apple store and try them

quartz token
#

14 inch is like the only afforable one I see?

#

16 inch is pricey dang

rough osprey
#

they also have a refurbished store if you wanna save a bit

quartz token
#

Wooting buys it, so that helps, but don't wanna blow the budget haha

steep creek
#

mac is solid for your usecase imo, but just make sure you get it with the specs you need, since you cant upgrade after

rough osprey
#

internal storage prices are just uhhhh

gusty kiln
#

External ssd?

steep creek
#

yea ssd works but thinking more about ram

quartz token
#

imma check over with some people in the team. Its just 2 weeks of editing for me, then it gets passed down to someone in the office in Taiwan

ashen spindle
#

if you look at macs make sure you look at options with enough ram and not be surprised by suddenly +200€

quartz token
#

so I will check what might be suitable for that

fair gull
#

lol

#

all the power

quartz token
#

Probably, so I will ask what they need tho

#

Maybe some only work on mac, then I might as well get a mac then

hmmm, how expensive are those monitors that can accept ALT mode over USB C?

the ones with enough power to power the computer and display its video over one USB C cable?

starting around 100 ending around 4k

ashen spindle

you want a monitor that powers the pc?

how nice a monitor you want is how much you will spend

gusty kiln

you dont need a kvm switch, just usb c should be enough?

gusty kiln

this is the only list that lets you filter by usb power

#

how much does the deck need?

wheat plume
#

IDK, the charger it comes with is 65W but it doesnt seem to use that much since I can charge my phone at the same time using the same charger

#

got them both charging from 65w charger without issue

astral haven

basically all monitors with pd do 65

wheat plume

thats the limit for now?

kvm for steam deck is nice as well

lyric hatch

yeah but who does this affect?

astral haven
#

depends on the brightness it drops down to

#

if it drops to 600 like i would expect from that peak brightness adaptive brightness off number, it would probably be a problem compared to lcds in a skylight lit room

lyric hatch
#

well here it is next to the mini-led ipad air

#

wait is it mini led or just normal

astral haven
#

normal

#

but shocker adding a turbo boost oled layer allows you to brute force your brightness up to a standard lcd level
i dont think anyone could have seen this coming -_-

lyric hatch

well outside of bright enviroments the OLED beats it in every other way so 🤷‍♂️

astral haven
#

sure, but its still funny how it uses dual layer oled to match samsung oled

and considering its using dual layer oled to match samsung oled, its probably not samsung oled, and so far apple is zero for 2 on getting a good second source for their phone oleds

lyric hatch

wasn't the iphone 15 pro the first phone to use the new samsung panels?

apple skipped a generation between 14 and 15 but that only put them up to last generation, they are still 1 generation behind samsung and 2 generation behind the chinese (samsung lets others beta test the panels before their flagships)

actually hmm im not finding a chinese phone with a better display than the 24u

lyric hatch

apple tried to go with BOE but they had issues with the display and dropped them

#

at least that's the rumour

astral haven

is that a rumor or is that the news from a few years back recirculating

lyric hatch
astral haven

yea seems that samsung is picking up the slack for the t3 supplier, and hopefully lg doesnt screw them up this time, otherwise it will be back to all samsung

anyone have the default gtk4 css??

umbral heron

Default one is empty, themes either add settings there or do @import 'colors.css'; to import other themes, like Breeze on KDE for example

#

That's my settings.ini for example: ```
gtk-4.0]$ cat settings.ini
[Settings]
gtk-application-prefer-dark-theme=false
gtk-cursor-theme-name=breeze_cursors
gtk-cursor-theme-size=24
gtk-decoration-layout=icon:minimize,maximize,close
gtk-enable-animations=true
gtk-font-name=Red Hat Display Light, Light 10
gtk-icon-theme-name=breeze
gtk-modules=colorreload-gtk-module:window-decorations-gtk-module
gtk-primary-button-warps-slider=true
gtk-sound-theme-name=ocean
gtk-xft-dpi=98304

wheat plume

oh, you can set button layout here... cool

I just stick to the close button

#

I thought VS Code used to show the color next to a hex value?!

fair gull

@umbral heron when will linux be good

umbral heron
#

Define good duck_sip

fair gull
#

usable by any and every layman as if it was windows/macos

crimson wigeon
#

Never

smoky frigate
#

with pop OS, it was there 5 years ago

wheat plume
#

and Fedora too

#

most major software has an RPM package for Fedora the same way it has a DEB package for Ubuntu on their websites

#

so you can do the typical Windows install method of hunting down an installer if you want to

#

or just use the package manager software instead

rough patrol
#

I‘d say linux is mostly there, just needs software support from third parties which is hit or miss and will probably always be

#

Cause some people just hate linux and want nothing to do with it for no rational reason (tim sweeney)

wheat plume
#

its in an infinite loop

  • Users wont use it cause lack of support for their favourite apps
  • Devs wont port the favourite apps cause no users
#

:/

rough patrol
#

And some games also wont work with it cause of anti cheat issues and devs not wanting to put in the work

wheat plume
rough patrol
#

Yeah but everyone knows nvidia sucks

wheat plume
#

True, but despite that, it didnt make the slightest dent in their marketshare

#

except among Linux users

crimson wigeon
#

But even there NV has the biggest marketshare, a lot of it in pure compute installations though because CUDA

smoky frigate
#

the way people talk about them makes nvidia and AMD sound like equals in the GPU market, but looking at steam charts there is just no competition

wheat plume
#

yeah

#

thats what im saying, people know they are shit but keep using them...just like the case with Windows acctually

smoky frigate

and that's a bunch of generic AMD gpus together, if I understand it right

reef patrol
#

Isn't that just iGPUs?

umbral heron

gg

umbral heron
#

Linux has a huge potential to become a OS of choice for people who either don't know how computers work and cannot be arsed to learn how to, and all they want is to watch photos/movies, surf web and do some simple workflows or for casual gamers, immutable distros + flatpak storefronts would be perfect for that
Or for power users, who are willing to get around pain of making Windows software work on Linux or are used to alternatives which already work on Linux

fair gull
#

storefronts
oh noe

woven laurel
#

those are dreams

#

but we support you

fair gull
#

it needs a single store front or easy install with 1 distributed common install file

woven laurel
fair gull
#

(or if youre windows you have 2 that both work the same to the consumer)

umbral heron
#

Well, flatpak
Just with different frontends for that, like Plasma's Discover

#

And AppImage is already very popular framework, which works basically on any Linux, as apps comes with necessary libraries included

#

Double-click and it works

fair gull
#

hows the backwards compatibility going

umbral heron
#

Mostly depends on libraries versions which apps needs, with AppImage coming with its own libraries, apps should work just fine on newer Linuxes

fair gull
#

what about ui backend? any unified DE backend to talk to?

wheat plume
#

You say that as if Windows has a unified backend

Every single piece of software on Windows has its own UI design and theme

fair gull
#

its 1 backend

#

the theme is a property

wheat plume
#

no its not

smoky frigate
#

windows has this whole infrastructure of library versions it manages, which is imo its biggest strength. I wish linux had that

fair gull
umbral heron
#

Unified may be a problem
GTK and Qt do the best job of the bunch as for now, and are mostly universally supported

fair gull
#

yeah but thats frameworks i meant more direct to the os so to say

#

no extra lib

umbral heron
#

Not really, with UI you'll be working more with DE than with OS

smoky frigate
#

like the win32 that nobody uses?

fair gull
#

win32 is used quite a lot

umbral heron
#

win32 is what largely killed Windows S dogekek

fair gull
umbral heron
#

Ah, then no, unless you go with some framework or library it's the wild wild west out there

fair gull
#

i mean i guess win and macos sort of have the advantage of controlling the DE

wheat plume
fair gull
#

thats the native way to create a window using direct api calls

wheat plume
#

but what do they end up looking like?

#

an old windows xp style app or the new Mica / Fluent design?

fair gull
#

if you dont specify anything they look like the default current OS windows

wheat plume
#

so Mica?

fair gull
#

if you make those calls on win11 yes

#

pretty sure fluent also just spawns a mica ui win on win11 since its just a library combining ui stuff for multiple OSs

wheat plume
#

Windows would be pretty nice if all the software on there fit the same theme as the system apps do

#

like File Explorer and Notepad and Task Manager all now do

fair gull
#

takes time for windows to deprecate the ancient tools

wheat plume
#

You can use Rectify11 to fix most of it, but thats a hack

fair gull
#

cause backwards compatibility

wheat plume
#

yeah

fair gull
#

but said backwards compatibility is why windows is popular

#

"it just works"

wheat plume
#

but this new theme framework is kinda like what Linux has with GTK and QT

#

which is neat

fair gull
#

gtk and qt work for windows apps aswell i believe

#

at least qt does 100%

#

qt is basically like fluent ui... a lib to make UI on as many platforms as possible

umbral heron
#

GTK too, it was the first framework I learned to do some simple Windows apps with gui nod

fair gull
#

tmw i learned only winforms at the start

#

pain

#

no actually i built my first gui apps before that with bluej (java)

wheat plume
#

its more like MacOS UI design

fair gull

calslock literally just proved you wrong

halcyon moss

wat

wheat plume
#

QT follows the UI design of Xp and Windows 7

halcyon moss

# honest gull Wanted to upgrade to 1440p for awhile now since I built my new PC

I'm quite happy with my recently acquired HP OMEN 27qs (27" 1440p 240Hz, built-in USB hub, basic speakers, headphone connector) -- only recommended for PC though, HDMI is just 2.0 and apparently not enough for consoles -- it also has a gimmicky backlight, which can be nice at night if you don't want to switch on lights but also don't want to sit in pitch black darkness

umbral heron
#

If you go high res and high refresh rates - please, for the love of higher beings use DP and save yourself a headache

sure but the same can be said for elon tho, he said "But it is time to reorganize the company for the next phase of growth and you really need to reorganize it."
and the supercharger team didnt make many changes untill musk stepped in
it could be musk trying to look good by rehiring a few people after firing 500, but i suspect its just exactly what he said

ashen spindle
#

sure but this is about the shittiest way to enforce changes xD

#

when at the same time you also have the case of interns getting mails of their flight confirmed and hours later they get a message their stay is no longer valid and they got cut too

astral haven
#

sure, but he said to fire low performing people, people werent fired, so he fired everyone
firing everyone guarantees firing the low performers, and technically its the only way to guarantee all the low performers are gone

#

the point is more that dude is doing exactly what he says hes doing, nothing more nothing less

rough patrol
#

I think you are severely overestimating elon

ashen spindle
#

even if that is true you also lose high performing people that just cba with your shit anymore because you did it this way instead of just the normal way

astral haven
#

sure, but if they are sufficiently loyal, he will still be able to hire them back if he wants, and its pretty clear he values loyalty more than just working hard in general

astral haven
ashen spindle
#

I would say staying on board and getting used to getting fired and rehired is not loyalty

#

because clearly your loyalty first has been repaid by getting kicked and then maybe graciously you might come back

astral haven
#

that is assumging elon is thinking about what the others are thinking

ashen spindle
#

if hes not thinking about others it just further proves my point this is one of the shittiest way to get rid of low performers xD

astral haven
#

from his perspective, they didnt fire so they were loyal to the person in charge who didnt want firing to happen
if they are willing to go back after the person anti firing is gone, they must not be loyal to them

vagrant pagoda
ashen spindle
#

its also vastly oversimplified if there arent just also people who arent loyal but dont have another job or just moved and cant move back etc.

astral haven
ashen spindle

because you can do the same thing without fucking people over and its clear he lacks empathy

astral haven
#

sure but the people he rehires will probably end up fine, and the people he doesnt, he doesnt want he thinks were harming the company

ashen spindle
#

so how about you decide before and just fire just those

astral haven
#

he told the person to do that who knew that info, and they didnt

ashen spindle

and now other people need more time to find out which ones to rehire so it takes more time even if you were to retain all the people you want?

I think, for annual iterative work like cell phones. It is necessary to not make the best product the first time around you get stuck with people not looking forward to next years release. and or the hype for the product. (not that there is much since Sony has a very small part of the market) I still want the 1 mk VI but I know the 1 mk VII will be better and that I should wait. My mk IV over heats doing stuff which sucks. but now I have to look forward to a 1080p screen and heat pipes, So the market demands.

you can get an android with that, but you can also just disable it in software and without an exploit in aosp, it wont be usable

i've thought about getting an rtx 3060 or 3070 but i wasn't sure if that would be the best for my cpu or not

lyric hatch
#

Why the 9900k? Not like it's a bad cpu but it came out 6 years ago

thorny yarrow
#

i really don't want to upgrade my whole computer again and my motherboard supports up to the 9900k

#

or like, i just don't want to end up having to replace everything

lyric hatch
#

What's your current cpu

thorny yarrow
#

i have an i5 9400

lyric hatch
#

Doesn't make sense to buy a 6 year old cpu unless you find a really good deal on it

#

It isn't going to be that much of an upgrade

thorny yarrow
#

i see, i'm just worried about whatever gpu i upgrade to will get bottlenecked or smth

#

do you think that the 3060 will still be a good option for it?

lyric hatch
thorny yarrow
#

ahh okay! thank you

lyric hatch
#

Gpu definitely gonna be the biggest performance upgrade

thorny yarrow
#

i guess if i do end up having any issues with bottleneck, i could always upgrade then

#

thanks for your help :)

lyric hatch
balmy vector
#

Thats a good plan

thorny yarrow
#

i probably will upgrade fully too once i'm able to afford all the parts lol, but for now, i just want something to run well and game well even if i have stuff running in the background

balmy vector
#

Im pretty anticipating AMDs new stuff

#

As i know intel will very much still have their power issues havo

thorny yarrow
#

yeah..

#

i would use a ryzen cpu if i could but my motherboard only supports intel

balmy vector
#

Me as a 12600k user not dealing with the mess duck_sip

crisp granite
#

ryzen mobos aren't even that expensive

balmy vector
#

Cheap am5 mobos are plentiful

ashen spindle
#

if you are worried about the cpu bottleneck you can just increase resolution or other graphics settings to load the gpu more and then upgrade to a much newer cpu at a later point, dont upgrade on that board

crisp granite

And lots of bad

thank you guys!

Pixel 8 vs Pixel 8A Bezels

I think I prefer the 8A cause they are even sized all around unlike the 8

bottom one on 8 is slightlllyyyyy thicker than the others

Hi! How much of the kryptox 105 should I use in a bag of springs ?

marsh pewter
ashen spindle

cooler should come with paste dont need an extra tube

#

1000W psu is a bit overkill for that

balmy vector
#

Yeah but other than that it’s pretty good

#

I think

marsh pewter
ashen spindle
#

like 850 or something like that would depend what the prices are but should be able to save some

#

and depends if you think you want a 4090 and oc or if you stay below that

#

like my 4090 is happy with the 750W psu I have but I also undervolted it and dont let it draw a lot

umbral heron
#

6TB NVMe hanaIsee

#

Also yeah, 750W would be plenty if you don't plan on upgrading too much

balmy vector
#

Delicious storage

ashen spindle
#

always good to keep in mind just adding all the TDP isnt giving you the powerdraw you will see

#

in games almost nothing comes even close to fully loading a cpus power

#

and if it does it doesnt fully load the gpu at the same time

umbral heron
#

TDP is less than 350W in this case for CPU+GPU duck_sip 750W should be enough

thorny yarrow
#

if you're planning on bag lubing more springs in the future, you could also use a reusable container solely for bag lubing so any left over gets used again

#

i hope that made sense 😭😭

Can we go back to phones like this?

#

18:9 display
Fingerprint scanner on the back
Metal body
No notch
Relatively slim bezels

#

Available in pretty colors
Don't have to worry about shattering the back if you drop it

#

No fingerprint smudges either cause it's metal

astral haven
#

power fingerprint > back imo

zenith silo
astral haven
#

i had back for years
its a tradeoff vs underscreen, generally both are about the same utility
but power button is superior to both imo

#

back when your phone is leaning up against something is v inconvenient

zenith silo
#

Never had power button but I definitely prefer back over underscreen

astral haven

or on a mount

the only advantage of back over underscreen is pulling down and dismissing notifications

that isn't how some people use the term when referring to mice

doesn't matter what you want it to be, it is what is is. That's how colloquialisms work

doesn't mean it is less accurate

and all the people that I know that work in the industry don't use the colloquialism

lyric hatch

guess you should let the big brands know

all the logitech mice are actually something that you could call ergonomic

#

not just asymmetrical but further ergonomic features for tilt etc

and razer just uses that cause it is a colloqualism, the people that make the mice call them differently
