Then again its their probably only chance of leapfrogging TSMC now

Since TSMC is playing safe and refraining from 1st gen

also why tf are you borrowing chargers? just bring your own and don’t forget it, on top of that it’s pretty rare you don’t find a USBC cable wherever you go.

hdr is a bigger issue

velvet radish

just bought the hd6xx for $200 on drop

worth?

vagrant pagoda

there is zero options for calibrating hdr between panesl

so i had to order my panels so the offaxis shift mostly compesates for it

astral haven

are they different panels/monitors or just poorly calibrated?

vagrant pagoda
#

miniled peak bightness isnt great on any panel to panel

astral haven
astral haven

ooooh the ABL doesnt match between panels?

vagrant pagoda
#

yep

#

also idk anyone that dose hdr unifromity that well

#

like testing

astral haven

yea i dont have a good idea on how to fix that besides not having abl

#

and if you want hdr without abl, you need reference monitors lol

final flame

6xx mostly has midbass, not subbass

vagrant pagoda
#

its not the same as abl though

#

abl is just oled

#

but miniled dose the same bs in hdr

#

i have 3 27m2v's

#

they have one of the better irronicly

#

but its still not great

but idk if i could ever use a non dimming zone screen after maining a 4kled on my desktop

most people think of bass as midbass anyways so yea

midbass is mostly punch and impact
while subbass is mostly that low rumble

6xx is probably the highest performing headphone for it's price so yea it's a good purchase

astral haven
vagrant pagoda

why, dose it overheat?

#

oled has abl for burnin

astral haven

and power usage

vagrant pagoda

no option for it?

astral haven

there are oleds without abl, they just need cooling

vagrant pagoda

mine has an option for disabling auto brightness on mine

its just a eco enable/disable

astral haven

Mine can, but only by limiting the peak

vagrant pagoda

no name monitor win then?

astral haven

My parents oled has the same thing

astral haven
vagrant pagoda

innocn is basicly no name brand in the states

1k miniled dimming zones

astral haven

That is very surprising

vagrant pagoda

it will heat throttle though

Oled does 1200 peak 250? Without abl

if you leave it hdr white

Mine is power limited

vagrant pagoda

you can disable it

i talked with their support

Both Inno and Koorui are manufacturers that make panels for other companies

But for whatever reason sell, I suppose factory QC rejects, through their own brands

vagrant pagoda

they dont make panels

cursive summit

Pretty sure they do

vagrant pagoda

and they have the same grade panels as the other brands

the 27m2v actually tested better than the viewsonic and lenovo versions

Idk, I had a thought that it'd be possible to manufacture something that doesn't have pixels and displays data directly as input

vagrant pagoda
#

the pixel is the data

cursive summit
#

Without the pixels

vagrant pagoda
#

the data on your computer gets rasterized as pixels

frozen ingot
#

well the computer is sending pixel data to your monitor

vagrant pagoda

you mean like a vector display?

that uses lines

astral haven

Multibeam vector displays

valid sonnet
ashen spindle

Well the thought I had was something like a magnet with ferrofluids, the more magnet force the more fluid reacts, I was thinking a similar concept for a display tech

vagrant pagoda
#

modern browsers are way way to bloated

cursive summit

Depending on data input/electrical stimulation the display would shape itself to the data, no pixels, just a raw organic output

valid sonnet

Yeah I know. But just as a pointer. My 8 year old kb gets 60 ms.

It’s pretty self explanatory, choose a zone to get lowest possible latency and the other zones get slightly lower priority and therefore a couple extra ms latency

And the zones are no customizable, they correspond to actual hardware on the pcb

why go through all that effort, I don't understand, but maybe it'll be good

wheat plume
#

COSMIC is an entirely different UI to GNOME

#

well, there is still the headerbar concept but COSMIC puts the menubar inside of it unlike GNOME

#

so you have the window control buttons + Menu bar + app specific buttons too on the same bar

#

;-; just want a damn fingerprint scanner on my laptop

oh so it's more like fapple OS?

smoky frigate

hmmm hope it works out for them, the linux desktop market is saturated as it is (for the tiny userbase who use it on their personal computers anyway...)

wheat plume
#

yeah ....

#

I wish people stopped making distros and desktops and all focused on the main major ones like GNOME, Plasma and Cinnamon

its a freaking JS Library situation .-.

smoky frigate

but that's like 10-15 years into the future

halcyon moss
wheat plume
#

ofc, I dont think critical packages that make the system work should be flatpak....despite Canonical thinking so for their precious snaps

#

they want to make GNOME desktop itself a snap package :/

halcyon moss
#

I see gnome desktop stuff in my flatpak update list

smoky frigate
#

yeah no that's probably bad. its best use would be to reduce work overhead. I don't see distro packages going away either, since there's stuff like debian around who only run ancient kernels and are obsessed with security

wheat plume

Especially ones themed for gtk4 or libadwaita

smoky frigate

#

.-. please no

#

Those are critical apps

halcyon moss
#

Source?

smoky frigate
#

to tell you the truth I never really "got" packaging every app for every distro, if appimage existed when people switched from windows 8 because it was shit, the ability to download and run an app would have helped adoption

#

or dog forbid, vista even

wheat plume
#

AppImages are really underrated

#

Imagine SteamOS desktop with something like rpm os-tree so you can install apps to the root system without disabling immutability

And would persist through system updates

wheat plume
#

wheat plume

Ofc it works well on Linux xd

smoky frigate

wheat plume
#

Is it?

#

Oh...that's cool!

smoky frigate
#

I mean, the code text editor for example is open source, there exist forks that cut out all the telemetry and proprietary bits

wheat plume
#

Windows also seems to be slowly getting less likely to overwrite grub bootloader upon updates too
Which is great

smoky frigate
#

I dual-booted windows and different flavors of linux from around 2006 - 2018... it took me that long to make the switch at last. the last couple versions of 10 were the final straw 😛

wheat plume
#

If you found 10 bad....
The constant nagging, the constant pushing of their apps, pre installed shit like Facebook and TikTok and candy crush and the really crappy user experience of changing your default browser to Chrome is worse than 10

#

Unless Google found a way to make it a one click swap like Firefox has... Then yeah its a major pain in the ass to swap from edge to chrome

#

Got to change the default browser for each type of link and file type individually
And each time you change one, windows pops up some message to remind you that edge is built for windows 11 and you shouldn't swap away

final flame
#

the hinge in their words is stiff
and you have to be mindful when folding in the largest legs as the mechanism is different from the 2 smaller ones
and they state that the legs on the largest position is as delicate as the rest of it is robust

I don't see where you're pulling this interpretation from

astral haven
#

i pull it from the words that are on my screen?
just because something looks delicate doesnt mean it is
stiff means it is exerting excess force, if it were actually delicate, they would complain about the breaking rather than the mechanism being unintuitive

final flame
#

they don't say whether it looks "delicate" they simply state delicate
stiff to me simply means that there's extra resistance in the hinge
after making the claim that they're delicate they state that you have to be mindful when folding it which could be interpreted as easily broken

#

that's how I interpreted their words

#

not that it means much

astral haven
#

the other way to interpret the mindfulness is that it probably folds both directions, and can fold different directions on different sides

#

which would look dumb and cause the different sides to be different heights fully folded

#

like if you can find a review that says that broke? sure, but if its working fine, "delicate" means looks delicate

#

and that wasnt an issue in 9k vs 5k

astral haven
#

oh god them

ashen spindle
#

ye it's something else

astral haven
#

the problem tho is there are 2 camps
camp "benchmarks are everything"
camp "the other camp isnt measuring the right thing"
and the problem is while the general sentiment has truth to it, it devolves into all benchmarks are bad

#

i legitimately thought that swapping 9900k to 5950x was going to make my computer faster in game, and it just didnt

ashen spindle
#

eh I find it rather be the case that there is a camp that knows how to read some benchmarks but doesn't understand technical stuff and doesn't bother asking actual experts and form their own wrong conclusions and that one I have issues with lol

astral haven

and this is a foundational issue
any benchmark should be stable
but the games that need performance the most arent consistent

ashen spindle

cursive summit
unkempt lake
#

But some games struggle on a standard not poopy sd card on the deck so

#

Maybe this can help?

cursive summit
#

Prolly somewhere 300-400mbps for current best card readers

unkempt lake
#

Nice

#

So could be worth it

cursive summit
#

So these would require a lot faster card readers to fully harness the speeds

#

Dunno if any exist rn

unkempt lake
#

I have a sandisk ultra 1tb in the deck

#

Same as i have in my switch

#

They work well but def slower than the nvme

#

And yes i know an ssd swap is always a possibility it's just convenient to be able to dump in an extra tb so easily

cursive summit
#

For handhelds I doubt you'd need an SSD if the SD card has NVMe speeds

unkempt lake
cursive summit
#

But that all depends on the card reader, and no card reader supports 990MB/s speeds of that SD card

#

Most cap out 200 or so, rarely 300-400

Maybe there are some rare cases in cameras or whatever of actually fast card readers

na luma can deal with the dumbest sd cards

umbral heron

fair gull
#

luma these days (just modded my gfs 2ds xl) seems to have fixed a lot of issue as i used some brand ive never heard of (that also bricked later) but it loaded as fast as my sandisk extreme in my own 3ds

umbral heron
#

For me it still sometimes crashes when I try to use LocaleSwitcher Sadge

#

Bigger problem I have is that I struggle to find some better quality 8/16GB SD cards for my DS, everything now is 64GB+

fair gull
#

get a microsd and then an adapter?

#

you can still get sandisk or samsung in 8/16

#

its how i modded my dsi cause easiest

umbral heron
#

Sorry, I meant microSD
All reputable brands I can find around here are just blatant clones
There's GoodRam, but their SDs are shit, they die after 3~4 months of regular use

fair gull

the only brand i know thats not a big name microsd manufaturer is verbatim

#

and having used those the only downside is you cant use them for a lot of writes

#

theyd prob be fine in a dsi though where its purely reads

thick elk
#

The problem with fast micro-sd's in a lot of devices is that they simply do not support the standards that allow for faster data transfers.
especially not running over pci-e like sd express cards can.

That being said there is still value in going with something a little faster than the slowest cards.

umbral heron

We should just all move towards UHS-2 standard, would be nice PeepoShrug

thick elk

The speed thing is out of context of the older handhelds

fair gull

thick elk

as for my phone transfering media in bulk is always nice if it's faster.

umbral heron

I only noticed that games write longer to SD than SSD on Deck (well, duh)
But when playing there's practically no difference

fair gull
thick elk

I have a 512 GB Samsung Pro Plus and I do think getting something like that on the deck definitely seems better than using a slower card.

Interesting

#

Higher power targets make GRE shine bright

#

I can only imagine what the GRE performs like with a heavy VRAM overclock to like 22gbps to match 7900XT and maybe a slight clock boost

#

80CUs should not be performing that weakly, it needs some tuning and I believe it can be like within 5% or so of 7900XT, hopefully with decent TGP too

#

gre version is a confusing model

ashen spindle
#

You mean the heavy overclock that you can’t do because clocks are limited havo

#

The only reason gre exists(outside of being a china sku) that I can think of would be to fill that pricepoint so Nvidia doesn’t have a free ticket there

#

Or maybe more attempts to get stock moving before next gen

cursive summit
#

22gpbs VRAM OC should be easily stable and doable

#

Those VRAM chips on the GRE are same ones as on XT afaik, and are underclocked

ashen spindle
#

Max memory clock is 2316, it’s 2500 default for 7900xt and goes to like 2750 stable

#

Also you have lower bandwidth and smaller bus as you only have 4 MCDs on the gre

#

I guess there's a wait if anyone will make a modded bios with limiters removed

ashen spindle
#

Doubt it

#

You get the worst bins, still only 4/6 MCD and a slightly different GCD because is the mobile variant so you’re not reaching the xt anyway

think thats this editor, dont remember java being mentioned in the original report

To my understanding moving to Java seems pretty questionable, makes sense the original report didn't mention it explicity

in fact I dont think the report mentioned any languages specifically but moreso was showing issues and that something needs to be changed but wasn't suggesting any specific language but rather that it makes sense for CTO and similar to look at these points
