oh gosh...so expensive

#

well, 154 dollars is not the worst maybe but you can get dt 770 pro for that price

#

O.o they are planar magnetic..... gosh damn

#

isnt there a 30 ohm version?

umbral heron
#

250 ohms ones sure, 32 and 80 ones will work just fine

wheat plume
#

true

loud hemlock
#

i ran them off of my motherboard for a couple weeks but bought an e10k right after

wheat plume
#

Thomann has the DT-770 Pro for 140 euro and the 990 Pro for 150
Are the 990 Pro only 10 euro better? XD

umbral heron
#

Yeah, maybe 32 ohms ones would be better for Dualsense

#

I drive my M50xs through KA17 and I have to keep them at 20% of volume or they're way too loud dogekek

Sony is just using Audeze's planar tech

#

Which, for what those shitty plastics are priced at? Is actually a great value considering there's no Audeze headphone below 300$

Nintendo about to release an 8nm console in 2025

#

8nm makes sense

#

Peeps want 4nm but 8nm should be a lot cheaper to make

#

It's a handheld afterall

#

Although Deck was like 400 for the cheapest LCD version and that's TSMC 7nm I think

#

Samsung 8nm must be quite a bit cheaper cause I don't think it matches TSMC 7 in performance

ashen spindle
#

doesnt matter what node they use

product on worse nodes can be better and vice versa

#

o

#

you know how a lot of car brands are selling subscriptions for features that the car already has the hardware for? what happens to that hardware when the brand stops suppoting that car in like 3 years time?

#

can you no longer have heated seats or AC cause the server it connects to so it can verify paymment is offline?

reef patrol
#

It ceases working.

wheat plume
#

.-.

reef patrol
#

Unless you can hack it.

#

Just like people with various hearing and vision aids, who no longer have function due to lapsed licenses or such.

wheat plume
#

planned obscelecense is horrible
planned obscelecense on a vehicle that costs like 60 grand is EVEN WORSE .-.

ashen spindle
#

I mean unless the company plans to go under its not planned obsolescence

wheat plume
#

it is

#

they can easily stop supporting that car model after 3 years cause they want people to spend money on the newly released model

#

like how people seem to be ok with buying a new flagship phone every single year for some reason

#

Adobe are using customer's work for AI training now

ashen spindle
#

which so far nobody has done, nobody planned, and nobody expects because they know people dont buy a car every year

wheat plume
#

no, not every year.....they could make it every 3-4 years or so

reef patrol
wheat plume
#

.-.

ashen spindle
#

I don't like it either but it's just not planned obsolescence

#

not to mention regulations that would happen etc.

#

if anything people would just not use the features and keep the same car so they lose money

wheat plume
#

if a feature in a car that already has the hardware for it requires access to a server run by the car brand to verify if you paid to use the feature....nothing is stopping that car brand from shutting the server down in a couple years time to force people to buy a newer model of car

wheat plume
ashen spindle
#

yeah because people don't just use phones for that more and more anyway

wheat plume
#

when the servers go down, those will go bye bye and its up to the car brand how long the server stays, so yeah
planned obscelecense

wheat plume
ashen spindle
#

you just play it from the phone then?

wheat plume
#

no thanks

ashen spindle
#

then get 10$ bluetooth speakers that you put into your car idk

wheat plume
#

my car does :D thank you cheap ass FM Transmitter I bought from Amazon <3

ashen spindle
#

like yeah subscriptions for existing features is shit but that's just different from some doom scenario that isn't happening currently and for now doesn't have any signs it would happen

wheat plume
#

didnt BMW charge people a subscription plan for heated seats?

#

some brand did

#

onstar?

#

oh

ashen spindle
#

oh hey where did you find the news from october last year that they want new people to pay?

am I hallucinating or didnt you already post that

unkempt lake

But i thought maybe people would care in tech talk too

ashen spindle

ah right

unkempt lake

Because of the general improvements not related to helldivers 2

patching bg3 be like

lenovo doesn't believe in reinstalling windows i guess

umbral heron

Also Lenovo
Of all manufacturers - Lenovo dogekek
Ah, Superfish...

ashen spindle

But I believe in Lenovo

They have been the big oem that has always leaked AMD performance of new gens and I want my zen5 numbers

So then going more insane is what I want

wheat plume
#

Ayoooo

Finally a Steam Deck stable branch update
Woooo

unkempt lake
umbral heron
#

What's "stable"? pepehmm

unkempt lake
#

I mean you're right it's steamos we're talking about stable doesn't exist xdddd

wheat plume
# unkempt lake What's new?

Bunch of HDR fixes
New firmware
Workshop items can be disabled without needing to unsubscribe from them
Workshop items can be sorted now

unkempt lake
#

valve be like fix one thing break another

unkempt lake
#

That reminds me i should set up the dock again

#

Just been lazy

wheat plume
unkempt lake
#

The hdmi cable fell behind the tv its too much effort guys

umbral heron
#

Please, tell me that's the firmware update which was already released in beta and nightly

wheat plume
#

The only reason I have decky loader now is to get an OLED black theme and for steamgridDB plugin

#

Idk can't find it either
But I'm definitely on Stable and I just got an update

unkempt lake
#

To easily delete old files

#

That's it

#

Don't rrally know if its even needed anymore as steam seems to leave less junk behind than before

umbral heron
#

Ah, it wouldn't be a beta update, if Decky Loader wouldn't break dogekek

wheat plume
#

It's not even a beta update
I got it on stable somehow
Don't see the update on their site though

unkempt lake
#

Interesting

#

I could go check on mine @wheat plume

wheat plume
#

Oook!

unkempt lake
#

Lemme go grab it

wheat plume
#

Is it better to leave the Deck in sleep mode or shut it down if I'm only leaving it unused for overnight?

#

I'll be using it again once I wake up in the morning

umbral heron
#

I left it on sleep, didn't even turn off the game dogekek

wheat plume
#

It's also a great way to see what games need Internet connection even if they are single player.... Cause when you come back to it you'll no longer be in the game and back to the main menu -.-

unkempt lake
#

Nico uses it more than i do lol

wheat plume
unkempt lake
#

It says up to date

wheat plume
#

O... Hmm

unkempt lake
wheat plume

My update just appeared randomly
I didn't actually manually check for one

I can boot it up and check

wheat plume
#

Oook

#

I don't have the game installed anymore xd

unkempt lake
#

Xddd

unkempt lake
wheat plume
#

Oookkkkk

unkempt lake
#

Cuz you play it then you get bored and turn it off

#

I'd rather have more battery when i turn it back on

#

This thing doesn't have great standby power

#

If i was carrying it around sure i'd use standby more

wheat plume
#

What Dashi said

#

Xd

umbral heron
#

3~5% overnight is not really that much PeepoShrug

wheat plume
#

I suspend the game if I know that's the game I wanna play when I use the Deck next time xd

#

But not otherwise

unkempt lake
#

Technically it's not even mine i got it for nico for his bday last year because he kept saying how he wished x and y games were on the switch

#

So i was like here's a steam deck

#

But I "borrow" it

#

😛

wheat plume
#

:p

#

I love borrowing

unkempt lake
wheat plume
#

Persona is a great series for Deck due to suspend

#

When I grind ps5 it was so good

unkempt lake
#

tbh i think he's traumatized from using it as his only computer for 3 months so i can borrow it no problem for a while

wheat plume
#

Did he hate Linux that much?

#

Or just the issue of SteamOS being immutable?

unkempt lake
#

It was a good intro to linux for him being a non techy user

#

I didn't have to show him much

#

But

#

The problem was valve breaking shit with software uptades

#

Like internet usb thetering

umbral heron
unkempt lake
#

Or breaking titanfall2 his favorite game

wheat plume
unkempt lake
#

Like linux wasn't the problem valve was the problem

wheat plume
#

Oh you mean multiplayer?

unkempt lake
#

Thing is we used this to spend time while he was out of the country for 3 months

wheat plume
unkempt lake
#

So yeah... he was kinda upset

#

Luckily i managed to make him rollback

#

His os

#

And it fixed things

wheat plume
#

Ohhhhh

unkempt lake
#

Basically im the techy nico isn't

wheat plume
#

So you are already a Linux nerd before the Deck?

unkempt lake
#

Nico just wants to push a button and have things work

wheat plume
#

Fair xd

unkempt lake
#

And if they don't work he goes Alexa shit breakies

#

pls fix

wheat plume
#

LOL

unkempt lake
#

And i fix

wheat plume
#

Hehe

#

I love and hate being tech support

unkempt lake
#

Work related stuff

wheat plume
#

I hate it because my uncle never fucking understands when I can't fix a problem he has if it's something out of my control like his phone being too old to run an app or that I can't create an account for him cause the website is down for maintenance

#

-.-

unkempt lake
#

But i'll say steam os is a good linux with training wheels

wheat plume
#

I daily drive it on desktop for the last like 6 years

unkempt lake
#

Nico didn't feel lost

wheat plume
#

Yeah it's great for new users

unkempt lake
wheat plume
#

Just once you advance you'll get frustrated with it being immutable

unkempt lake
#

Kinda got sick of having some stuff on linux sone stuff on windows

wheat plume
#

Fair enough

unkempt lake
#

Mp games specifically

wheat plume
#

I only need Windows for checking my mouse for firmware updates....

#

I wish Piper could do that :'(

#

But I can use Piper to configure the mouse all I want

unkempt lake
#

Thats what im wondering here

wheat plume
#

Idk if it does or not xd I only have this mouse for like 3 months

#

I also need Windows for my controller update and configuration
I have an 8bitdo controller and it only has software for Windows

unkempt lake
#

I see

wheat plume
#

And they have an android app too
But that app can't do FW

unkempt lake
#

Never used one of those controllers

wheat plume
#

I have the 2.4Ghz ultimate controller

#

I freaking love it 😍💜

So comfy
The charging dock is so nice too

i have the box too lel

unkempt lake

i gave my steam link away

its really not very good tbh

unkempt lake

wheat plume
#

I'm very curious about the SteamOS console that rumors are talking about

#

Steam Deck but console

unkempt lake
astral haven
unkempt lake
#

It failed

wheat plume
#

Steam machines.... Yeah
But SteamOS wasn't even ready for those when they launched
They came with Windows

astral haven
#

what?

wheat plume
astral haven
#

i thought there were steamos 1 devices

unkempt lake
#

Alienware laptop packed in a box xd

#

I remember a customer bringing this in for repair once

wheat plume
# astral haven what?

My one came with Windows 8.1 cause Valve didn't have a stable build of SteamOS ready in time

unkempt lake
#

Was interesting to work on

wheat plume
#

I had to replace the cmos battery in mine.... Fucking had to take the whole motherboard out

astral haven
#

steamos released in 2013 what

wheat plume
#

Yeah

#

SteamOS used to be Debian based for some reason

astral haven
#

did arch exist 15 years ago when it went into dev?

wheat plume
#

Arch existed yes
But Valve decided to use Debian for SteamOS 1 and 2

astral haven
#

wikipedia says if you bought a steam machine from valve, it ran steamos

wheat plume
#

Only SteamOS on Deck is Arch based

unkempt lake
wheat plume
astral haven
#

did you buy it from steam?

wheat plume
#

They did toss in an Xbox controller and a controller based UI though

unkempt lake
#

I remember

wheat plume
#

Hmm.....

#

Rip

unkempt lake
#

You got it from dell directly?

wheat plume
#

I did eventually install Linux on it though

#

SolusOS 😍4

wheat plume
unkempt lake
#

So its probably what happenned

wheat plume
#

Was rocking SolusOS with i3-gaps for many years on it ☺️

unkempt lake

They had this configurator thing

wheat plume

Ahhh

unkempt lake

They had like 2-3 configs

digital cliff

awesome stuff

thick elk

That's not true, accented characters are not super common among usernames in most places I think

halcyon moss

Non ascii chars.

#

Most likely

severe phoenix

é stuff like this basically

halcyon moss
#

That stuff is unfortunately quick to overlook

thick elk
#

That would also mean non latin languages

severe phoenix
#

Just AMD is a multi billion dollar company lol

thick elk

but this specifies it to accented characters, so it could just be a bug related to replacing them.

halcyon moss
#

Orrr.. Unicode accent chars are handled incorrectly.

reef patrol
halcyon moss

Which are basically: next char, add this accent

wheat plume
thick elk

The only thing that surprices me is that it's under known issues.
I would have guessed these type of issues are often hard to diagnose but easy to fix.

ashen spindle

could be they just found it as the driver was going out

Maybe just didn't make it to the cut-off date for releasing the driver yea.

thats wack..I thought the Apple Watches can automatically enter Workout Mode

it can detect workout modes automatically

mine does it a lot

wheat plume

oh, then maybe he forgot to enable that?

or didnt find the setting to do so?

steep creek

could be yeah, i dont remember if this was something i turned on or it was automatically enabled

that it asks you and then calculates 10mins back

im mostly disappointed its only about apple watch and nothing else really except some sidenotes

frozen ingot

i mean i personally dont want or need a smartwatch

thick elk

wheat plume
ashen spindle
#

what feature, wasting power by not using wires to charge something?

last talon
#

Will it be possible to have 8k Polling on a 60HE ?

ashen spindle
#

no

steep creek
#

i dont use wireless charging, doubt ill ever use this powersharing feature

ashen spindle
#

bidirectional power would be nice but yeah super unlikely and I really dont want my phone to charge wireless in the first place but definitely not have hardware to do it in reverse too

steep creek
#

same i'd be fine with the feature only over cable though

ashen spindle
#

yeah mostly because that wouldn't add extra cost or anything really

steep creek
#

quicker too

#

also with magsafe it created a permament ring mark on the back of my case, after just one charging session lol, i returned the charger after that

#

stuck to cables ever since

ashen spindle
#

oh yeah I dislike wireless charging in general

steep creek
#

likewise

frozen ingot
thick elk
#

Never used wireless charging myself, never had a device that supports it, but if I did I would probably use it. Especially now that I changed the way I charge my phone.
Capped at 75% but most of the time in a charger.

fair gull
#

wait your current phone has no wireless charging?

#

also which wireless charging technology

thick elk
#

Budget chinese phones don't have it.

#

still otherwise good specs certainly for the price but my Poco X3 pro does not have wireless charging.

wheat plume
#

the last few A series Pixel phones also dont have it .-.

halcyon moss
#

I've had a few phones that have it, never uses it

frozen ingot
#

I've had wireless charging on my phones for years and I could count the times I've tried/used it on one hand

thick elk
#

Samsung's A series don't have it, Fairphone doesn't have it. Just looking at some phones I would actually consider upgrading that match my requirements

#

Primarily at least 500gb of storage being a major one I looked at here.

#

500gb also includes micro sd

astral haven
#

the advantage of wireless charging is you can have much better protected devices

#

charging ports on watches is i think the main reason samsung has gone this way

#

usb c just doesnt work for that application

#

theres also the factor that carrying cables around is a pain

thick elk
#

For me it's convenience of not having the phone plugged in to charge if I were to use it.
Besides that the first factor only works if you get rid of the usb port, which is not only used for charging.
Second factor seems like a non-issue, where you have a wireless charger, you can also have a cable laying there already.

#

asthetics maybe but carying a cable seems rather mute

astral haven
#

but i dont get to bring everything i want everywhere
say i go on a walk, and my watch or earbuds are dead and im sitting around for a while trying to eat
my phone is often nearly fully charged, i use magnetic mounts at home and in the car to keep it that way, and cables are annoying on a walk

#

and when in the car, having a cable flop around is really annoying, and if im going to have a magnetic mount already for my phone, might as well have it charge too

ancient fulcrum
#

and i can see why only a few people will need it but it still is useful.
i had several occasions where i could charge my Bluetooth in ears for another easy 2 hrs of battery so i can listen to music on my way home.

ashen spindle
#

nah wireless charging is just dumb because of how much energy it wastes due to inefficency

astral haven
#

thats a highly simplistic view

#

the amount of energy wasted in the entire lifespan of a phone charging wirelessly is similar to the energy cost to produce a single cable

cursive summit
#

Jim's an engineering superstar

steep creek
#

but you need a cable to power the wireless charger lol

#

personal preference in the end i guess

astral haven
#

and fair enough, however plugs wear out

steep creek
#

i dont charge my devices enough for that to happen i suppose

astral haven
#

i doubt thats true

steep creek
#

at least not within the time ive kept them, mothers xs' charging port is still doing just fine

astral haven
#

you might have bought more expensive cables that are harder to wear out, but have you really never worn down a cable?

#

i more meant cable side

#

plug side on phones they build to a very good standard

fair gull
astral haven
#

cables basically cant be built to as good of a standard

steep creek
#

oh yea of course they do wear down, but i tend to keep them for 2 ish years

#

but i never bend them, just let the phone charge on my nightstand

reef patrol
fair gull
#

but your mac collection needs to grow

#

so add another mac device

astral haven
#

and theres much worse

#

think in a car, uber, at work etc

steep creek
#

personally i just charge my phone once per day typically and thats in the evening so it works out, but i do get the appeal of wireless chargers in some devices for sure

#

like for example earbuds or the watch, especially wach due to its durability requirments

astral haven
#

portability too

steep creek
#

yea

#

but for now i'll stick to cable on the phone because wireless is too slow, and gets a lot warmer than wired

#

talking about iphone here

astral haven
#

heres another thing to consider

#

cold is actually awful for lithium batteries

steep creek
#

it is but room temperature is fine

astral haven
#

its not really?

#

i mean "fine"

#

batteries will last a good 4 years

#

but 40-45c is generally the best region

#

20c is on the bottom end of acceptable

steep creek
#

not sure how warm the phone gets while charging but, i do change my phone within that timeframe anyways so all good lol

astral haven
#

and its like sure, but it kinda throws the efficiency argument out the window

steep creek
#

iphone charging isn't the fastest even while wired, using a magsafe charger just slows down the process too much for my liking though

#

this is from max tech

astral haven
#

fair enough, but i often get most of my battery charged overnight

#

and i just use the wireless at work and in the car to keep it topped off

steep creek
#

yep all depends on use case, wireless charging can be great for some

astral haven
#

yup

fair gull
astral haven
#

fair gull

makes no sense to relabel it still

I ended up upgrading to a MSI 4070 Ti Super

cursive summit
#

Oh look, a Titan

#

A non-controversial opinion:

#

If 4090 was named a Titan it wouldn't have sold anywhere near as much as a 90 series card

ashen spindle
#

it would have

#

because the only reason they named it a 90 is because gamers already bought up the titan cards

cursive summit
#

I honestly doubt, most people prolly aren't aware of Titans

#

They'd look at the branding and be not sure what it is

#

Labeling it 4090 imo is a major contributor to sales

#

So they buy RTX A6000s and return them later?

ashen spindle
#

the only reason they wouldn't know a titan exists is because they didnt announce the titan at gaming events or marketet for it

#

so if they had shown it as titan on relase with the performance gap it would have still sold as it did

cursive summit
#

4090 is just a Titan card, nothing else about it

#

If you remove 4090 from equation, AMD is on-par with Nvidia's best gaming card

#

Quite a major jump from the already great RX 6000

#

Tbf 3090 was kinda priced like a Titan

ashen spindle
#

you do realize a 4090 is not even using the full die

cursive summit
ashen spindle
#

so if you put a full die on titan and put the 4090 as somewhat worse it still beats amd

#

that just makes no sense saying if you ignore the second largest ada die amd is on par xD

cursive summit
#

AMD just never really has a Titan class card

#

Maybe soon they might

astral haven

that would be nice, and its what is needed for a new titan class card

but 🤷 amd seems to be cancelling them

gusty kiln

technically the 7900XTX cuz it's a full die

ashen spindle

How are AMD workstation cards doing nowadays

384b is cool but amd seems to be more bandwidth hungry than nvidia

cursive summit

I hope not

I mean, I don;t know why rdna4 would be big on raytracing

#

if anything that would make sense for rdna5 as its console gen

astral haven

i mean they have to

ashen spindle
#

I mean I don't know anyone reliable who says rdna4 is big on RT

astral haven
#

and to be fair the rt performance is improving faster than the raster performance by a huge margin

cursive summit
#

So far it just seems RDNA4 will be mid-range and quite fast in raster

#

Not that anything other than raster really matters

ashen spindle
#

I mean we dont have any big infos aside from some new things they support in llvm patches

#

but not how much better it perform in same area or per watt

cursive summit
#

I think I saw MLiD claim it'll be priced at maximum as a 4070 and perform as a 4080 or someshit

Idk it's just MLiD things

  1. Old ass decades old code base
  2. Cant refactor
  3. Cant start from scratch with new clean code cause backwards compatibility
  4. Lack of package manager such as apt or pacman
  5. no options for customisation like moving the taskbar or themes or icon packs
  6. Window rebooting randomly for updates
  7. installs drivers for hardware automatically that you may not need
ashen spindle

1 2 and 3 literally don't matter

fair gull
ashen spindle

they could at least matter if they are true

smoky frigate
#

windows grrrr!

ashen spindle

but as a user it literally does not matter if the code base is old??

fair gull
#

it doesnt really matter for the developers either

unkempt lake
#

also a common issue for amd users

#

lol

fair gull
#

interesting do you have any links to that?

unkempt lake
#

windows likes replacing newer drivers with older ones, breaking adrenaline

fair gull
#

i havent heard of any random driver installs for hardware that i dont need

#

every driver is needed for full usability

fair gull
#

and prob some WHCD thing

unkempt lake
#

yeah it's been going on for a while

ashen spindle
#

yeah it was windows update fucking up but just for amd driver versions

unkempt lake
#

never had it happen to me personally tho

#

but i've helped people out who had it happen to em

#

😛

fair gull
#

and even then it can probably be disabled with 1 google search and a quick regex edit

wheat plume
#

A windows update once overwrote the latest nvidia drivers I manually installed with much OLDER ones .-.

smoky frigate
# wheat plume 1) Old ass decades old code base 2) Cant refactor 3) Cant start from scratch wit...

MS's fanatical dedication to backwards compatibility is the platform's greatest strength imo. you can run the terrible fucking awful directx 3 port of X-COM in windows 10 without issue, that shit didn't even work in windows 98. running old games in linux, only possible with windows copies. I tried old linux copies of Soldier of Fortune, UT99 and Heroes of Might and Magic 3. ONLY SoF would work, and only with one specific GPU driver. win32 is the only stable ABI on linux 😛

reef patrol
#

Oh look. Options to stop all of that.

fair gull
#

shush mansen

thats too logical

reef patrol
fair gull
#

lets get back to hating windows

#

those fuckers dont even have winget in win10 or win11

#

oh wait they do

smoky frigate
#

I heard windows 11 users wear their underpants backwards angry_noot

fair gull

they dont even allow replacing explorer.exe.... oh wait they do

smoky frigate
#

I change them like I change my girlfriends, every 3 years

fair gull
wheat plume
fair gull
#

so you list it as not having a packagemanager... but use the package manager

wheat plume
#

winget doesnt have enough software on it yet to be viable for everyone

fair gull
#

not to mention linux doesnt have a complete package manager either anymore

wheat plume
#

idk, I find that a pain to install and use :/

#

what

fair gull
#

i have been forced to now use apt, snapd AND some manually linked bins

smoky frigate
#

well ubuntu is always doing some weird shit

fair gull
#

just cause some orgs dont wanna use apt anymore

wheat plume
#

yeah, canonical and canonical and canonical

#

everyone else is happy with apt

fair gull
#

this is on debian

#

and i exceedingly hate the fact i now have 3 software sources

wheat plume
#

debian uses snap now?!

fair gull
#

no

#

only specific software requires it

#

cause they dont have apt packages

smoky frigate
#

personally I hope something like flatpak or snap becomes the norm rather than the exception. I never understood why everyone goes through the effort of packaging every single app and library for every distro. that's INSANE effort duplication

wheat plume
#

ive never seen software only on snap before other than shit canonical made

ashen spindle
#

https://twitter.com/never_released/status/1758946808183525702 incase anyone was wondering why amd didnt make the zluda project an official one

You may not reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble any portion of the output generated using Software elements for the purpose of translating such output artifacts to target a non-NVIDIA platform.

Ah so that's how NVIDIA is reacting to CUDA on whatever compat layers

fair gull
#

either way no package manager will be the one to rule them all as there will always be manually downloaded and distributed binaries

smoky frigate
#

kinda what I suspected

fair gull
#

so i wont hold an incomplete package manager against windows

gusty kiln
#

oh wow, my 4070 ti super idles lower than my 2080, ~30W vs ~50W

are they finally accepting that the way to spread linux to the masses it to make it just work for gamers

perhaps lol, or at least have all features work in some way at least, so you can at least use them even if they dont work just like that out of the box

smoky frigate
#

kinda, 15-20 years ago the prevailing attitude was "git gud" but the paradigm shift is improving it a lot

cursive summit
#

Are we finally admitting that linux just doesn't work and we can finally abandon it? havo

ashen spindle
#

yeah no that's not the solution either

timber mantle
#

Linux isn't bad, it's just not overly intuitive if you don't have patience.

cursive summit
#

Sometimes I just want to get work done instead of fighting the OS

ashen spindle
#

with how much you dislike win11 and all that shouldn't you hope they just make linux work then instead of wanting to abandon it

timber mantle
#

In a strange way, Linus is early Android to Windows is to what iOS has always been.

#

iOS has always been a simple, just works type of OS that people gravitate towards.

cursive summit
#

I'm just sticking with windows 10 forever at this point

ashen spindle
#

sure..

timber mantle
#

Early iterations of Android took some tinkering to get the way you wanted it. That's what most Linux distros are now

smoky frigate
#

the trend in the last decade has been that linux gets evermore usable while windows finds new ways to make itself unappealing

marsh pewter
timber mantle
#

At some point I want to dual boot Linux on my PC to use as my daily and only use Windows for gaming.

smoky frigate
#

I'd say give it another 2-3 years if you have an nvidia GPU

timber mantle
#

Right now I just have Fedora running on a NUC that I occasionally fuck around with

timber mantle
smoky frigate
#

both are true! currently it's only feasible to use the closed-source nvidia driver, which is spotty

timber mantle
#

Yikes

smoky frigate
#

but they made enough of it open-source that a free driver is now being worked on

timber mantle
#

But that wouldn't matter if I'm not trying to game within the Linux distro right?

#

Or am I missing something

wheat plume
#

I still am not used to gnome desktop adding this new workspace indicator... its strange to me

smoky frigate
#

early results are promising, though obviously not quite there yet

thick elk
#

Things will get better for Nvidia over time, but in general AMD/Intel drivers are nicer to work with

smoky frigate
timber mantle
#

I don't mind dual booting, I'm just lazy about setting it up.

ashen spindle
#

instead of dual booting the way is to wait till gpu passthrough finally works with no issues and you just run the game in a vm

#

but that will take some more time to be ready

timber mantle
#

I installed a couple of Linux distros on the NUC to see if I liked it well enough and I do. Like I said I'll get around to it eventually

smoky frigate
#

I tried GPU passthrough and wasn't that into it, it meant disconnecting the gpu from the host OS and passing it through to the VM, meaning you can just as well dual-boot

thick elk
#

Problem with VM based solutions is that it doesn't work with anti-cheat in other words the games you typically need windows for.

timber mantle
#

Anticheat is really only an issue with online multiplayer tho.

#

I basically don't bother playing anything comp anymore

ashen spindle
#

which are usually the most played games yes

thick elk
#

The rest mostly runs fine on Linux though.

smoky frigate
timber mantle
#

CS but I haven't played it in months

timber mantle
thick elk
#

A lot of multiplayer games do work, just some that do not.

ashen spindle
#

and yeah current passthrough isn't nice but stuff like looking glass is promising and then if we get the vendors to just unlock features needed for it we will get there so you dont have to reconnect anything

smoky frigate
#

cs works natively even, though with proton, native vs windows continues to diminish in significance. hell, sometimes proton is flat-out better

thick elk
#

Thing is it will probably still hit the same roadblock of kernel level anti-cheats not working (or requiring essentially cheats to not be detected)

#

CS works, but not the special extra strict competitive anti-cheats.

thick elk

That is one reason but some things are just a bit more efficient on linux.

smoky frigate
#

if you told me this would be possible 10 years ago, I would have ridiculed you 😛

ashen spindle

halcyon moss
smoky frigate

yeah but it sucked

#

had to setup a lot of it manually in the end, consult wikis, and everything was translated to OpenGL which was slow as balls

#

now shit is just minimal fuss a lot of the time

halcyon moss
#

That's true.

fair gull
#

id love to see a linux vs win vm on linux comparison

smoky frigate
#

a more recent test, where it's kind of a massacre. note that all of these are using AMD GPUs. nvidia is not quite there on linux, about 5-10% performance loss on their driver.. which is sure to get better, but who knows when

#

depends on the distro. on ubuntu and derivatives, it's easy. pop even comes with it preconfigured

#

arch it's not harder than anything else on it, you just have to install nvidia-dkms and bob's your uncle

#

afaik it only sucks on SuSE rn

ashen spindle
smoky frigate
#

if you want minimal fuss, you do NOT want to set this up, it will bite you

currently yes but thats why I hope I can do in x years, start linux, do apt install looking glass and just run it

is 4k 27" but 30Hz refresh rate (it's 1.4 hdmi so doesn't support 60 Hz the monitor itself supports it) okay if i wont do video editing or gaming? or is it still annoying

mild dome
#

I find 30Hz for pc desktops to feel really sluggish as you will see the mouse lagging behind your mouse.

It works fine, but just feels bad. If this is a secondary monitor for watching YouTube or reading whilst the important stuff happens on the primary ai would say it's fine

astral haven
#

i found it extremely annoying
for gaming tho you can usually drop it to 1440p60hz and be fine

#

but for text and video itll be annoying

mild dome
#

Yeah if you are buying a monitor you might end up preferring 1440P with 60 rather them sacrificng Hz for 4k

atomic storm
#

It will be mostly used for programming and reading pdfs . ig if i find it annoying i can lower the resolution?

astral haven
#

yea thats what i meant, tho buying a lower res monitor is probably a better idea

#

but also are you truly stuck with hdmi 1.4?

#

displayport? usb-c?

#

also theres chroma subsampling

atomic storm
#

i will research more about chroma subsampling seems interesting

astral haven
#

wow that really a shame

a 1440p monitor at 1440p looks better than a 4k monitor at 1440p (signal)

final flame
astral haven
#

yea you can stuff a 1440p60 signal through the cable , about the same bandwidth as a 4k30 signal

Dpi is terrible thougg

unkempt lake
#

I mean yeah on a pc monitor if you run 1080p on anything larger than 24.5 inch it looks like shit

#

On a TV tho you sit further away and it looks fine

#

Like playing a switch game on a 4k tv

#

At tv sitting distance will look fine

#

But run it at 1080p on a 4k 32inch monitor

#

And it will looks like shit

#

Display size matters

halcyon moss
#

22 inch is the max for me for 1080p

#

Once at work they bought 27 inch 1080p screens..

halcyon moss
#

The ones that bought it were kinda old so. It was very nice for them

unkempt lake
#
