It's not that much force, it's just they are made out of very thin metal sheet

umbral heron

I dunno then, maybe someone before me mucked up sliding them in, because they take quite a considerable amount of force, and several of them I had to lever out with a screwdriver

reef patrol
#

Sigh... here we go again.

My PC's randomly rebooted three times within the past hour, which is ... not normal. Once every few days is what I'm used to.

RAM "seems" fine (did one full round of Memtest so far and it's not provoked by temperature or CPU load. So that narrows it down to two likely suspects. A defective power supply that glitches out randomly, or the motherboard most likely.

marsh glade
#

Just do what I do and start nuking portions of you C drive

reef patrol
halcyon moss
#

Hm i've had a faulty ram stick once that'd cregularly crash when it was in there, but fine during memtest

umbral heron
#

Does it audibly click while it turns off? If so, then PSU is faulty, I had that issue several months back

halcyon moss
#

stick removed, stable system

reef patrol
#

Just a completely random reboot. No bluescreen or anything that makes it sound like a failsafe was tripped.

#

At this point I kind of want to just throw everything out and start over. But that's not cheap, and I assume we're in the late stages of the current AM5 generation.

#

On the other hand... it's hard to work like this consistently.

raw zephyr
#

am5 awaits you

ashen spindle
#

could always just get a 7600 and resell that when zen5 hops around

reef patrol
#

Price difference between the 7600 and 7800X3D isn't large enough to gamble on a resale I think.

ashen spindle
#

200 vs 350?

reef patrol
#

It's just under half of double price.

#

240 vs 400

ashen spindle
#

I mean if it does impact work might be time to get it and just either skip to zen6 after or something

reef patrol
#

Anyway...getting ahead of myself. Don't really have 5-600€ to spend on hardware right now 😄

halcyon moss

raw zephyr
#

how old is your psu? and do you have a spare one that you could try?

reef patrol
#

I do not. But it's a platinum something from Seasonic.

#

One of the pricier ones that's about... two years old? three?

raw zephyr
#

hmm never had issues with Seasonic

#

8+ years in a system of mine, no issues

umbral heron
#

I had, but it seems I'm in a minority

raw zephyr
#

and it's completely random? no pattern to it?

woven laurel
#

also have a seasonic psu. never had problems whats the question

reef patrol
# raw zephyr and it's completely random? no pattern to it?

Completely. I could be playing a game, or I could be answering emails in a browser, with just Spotify running in the background.

PC just goes immediately into black screen, and I can see by the debug readout on the motherboard that it's going through POST

ashen spindle
#

anything in the event log?

reef patrol
#

I've tried previously to try and provoke it via excessive amounts of Furmark and Prime95, but it doesn't seem to be related to that.

reef patrol
ashen spindle
#

enough ram that you can run it with just one stick for a while?

raw zephyr
#

maybe faulty sensors? no idea, try monitoring your temps with hwinfo

reef patrol
#

Running windows on 8GB of RAM. In this day and age?

raw zephyr
#

reef patrol
woven laurel
#

prime95 doesnt crash it?

reef patrol

woven laurel
#

what temp does it make at 95

raw zephyr
#

my guess it's the psu

raw zephyr
#

really nothing shows up in event viewer? that's weird

ashen spindle

reef patrol
#

I really miss working in an IT store. I could just drag the PC to work and swap out every component one at a time.

umbral heron
#

Looks like sudden power cut if it doesn't write anything to event viewer
I'm 70/20/10 sure it's psu, ram or mobo
So, shucking PC piece-by-piece until you'll find the culprit?

raw zephyr
halcyon moss
#

as if there are local stores anymore -_-

raw zephyr
#

they are in czech ¯_(ツ)_/¯

digital cliff
#

there are, they just have fuck all in stock

reef patrol

Two issues with that.

  1. I can't provoke it, so it could be a week before it happens or more.
  2. 14 day return here, online. So I'd still have to pay shipping twice (and assume it fixed the issue, if it doesn't crash again within those 14 days or so)
raw zephyr

question for network people, I have my nas connected to my router and a secon lan cable from my nas to a switch, that one is on 192.168.1.x and the regular network obviously on 192.168.0.x if I plug something in on that switch, can I have it access the rest of the net by changing the subnet mask or would that not work at all

reef patrol
#

Your what connected to your router?

#

A switch shouldn't change the IP range.

ashen spindle
#

no but I set it so the lan2 on the nas has a different range than lan1 on it

reef patrol
#

Oh dear.

ashen spindle
#

it's on purpose so that devices on default can't get into the rest

#

but now I needed to add another devices that does need regular access and I only had a port open on that switch so now I'm trying if I can go around this or need a different switch for it

reef patrol
#

Either they can communicate, or they cannot. Separating them accomplishes that one thing. I am not aware of any workarounds for "special cases"

#

Anything plugged into Port 1 on the router has one subnet, everything into Port 2 has another.

#

Including any switches put behind either.

fair gull
#

the nas isnt a switch

#

its just available on 2 networks

reef patrol
#

wat

ashen spindle
#

give me a sec to use paint

fair gull
#

quins questions was if a nas connected to both switch and router allows someone on the switch to access the router subnet

umbral heron
#

Yeah, that'd be useful dogekek

fair gull
#

unless i misunderstood

reef patrol
fair gull
#

yes

reef patrol
#

Then the NAS would specifically have to be set up for two physical addresses and so on.

fair gull
#

they do that automatically

reef patrol
#

Let me finish.

#

And then it becomes a question of "Can I setup my NAS to handle having two different LANs for each app and jail thing I run?"

fair gull
#

not what it was about though

reef patrol
#

Well yes. Yes it is.

#

Want to access SMB on the NAS? The NAS needs to be able to assign the SMB to two subnets and manage all of the cross connection.

fair gull
#

not what quin asked

reef patrol
#

That's how I understood it. Bring forth the PAINT

ashen spindle
#

I want that device C is able to get to my router

fair gull
#

ye so the answer is no

umbral heron
#

No way in this configuration

reef patrol
#

Oh you're using your NAS as a router 😄

fair gull
#

unless you specifically set up your nas to act as a layer3 switch this wont work

umbral heron
#

You need routing between .0 and .1 subnets

fair gull
#

hes just having it connected on 2 networks

reef patrol
#

And routing traffic from the router is... acting as a router.

fair gull
#

it is not though

reef patrol
#

A layer 3 switch is a router, Tony.

ashen spindle
#

a and b are just poe ip cameras that I dont want to expose to the internet, just that they send data to the nas so for that the setup is working as intended

fair gull
#

i am aware but why would you ever setup a nas for that

reef patrol
#

THAT we can agree on of course 😄

fair gull
#

i would hope the switch is connected to the router directly

umbral heron
#

Wouldn't it be easier to connect everything to one router and then use VLANs? Or firewall for that matter

ashen spindle
#

why would the switch be connected to the router

fair gull
#

i assume some device on the switch gets internet

reef patrol
ashen spindle
#

no, I just added device C and I want that to have internet, but the cable was only making it to the swtich so I'm seeing if I could get away with not having to get another switch/long cable or something

fair gull
#

if your switch can do vlans yes

#

otherwise thisll be one hard task

ashen spindle
#

and the only reason I was thinking about it was that I was able to configure the cameras with this setup from my pc that's on the router so there has to be some way to go that way

fair gull
#

so the easy solution is to not have the nas inbetween like that but use a switch that supports vlans

latent mural
#

Chat

fair gull
#

that way the physical port can only connect to a specific vlan and nowhere else

latent mural
#

my nine button doesnt work

#

I just got my wooting 60he

ashen spindle
fair gull
digital cliff
umbral heron
#

I thought about something like this, with OpenWRT you should be able to do this on most routers

timber mantle
ashen spindle
#

well the software for the ipcams runs on the nas so it was just the easiest to use the second lan port for a poe switch and have it set that way

umbral heron
#

Firewall then

ashen spindle
#

also wouldn't work I only have one cable from router to where the nas and switch is

#

nah I'll just get a cheap second swtich that I put before the nas then and keep the rest as is

umbral heron
#

That would work too dogekek

fair gull
#

would be the ideal solution

umbral heron
#

Depends if it's managed or dumb switch, but yeah, that'd be perfect

fair gull
#

yes a managed l3 switch would be ideal here

ashen spindle
#

oh its a cheap poe switch for 15 bucks lmao

fair gull
#

oh yeah ok well

ashen spindle
#

I was also surprised the software was able to access the cameras without me changing anything so I thought there would be some way to use the subnet settings on the device to basically tell him to just use .0.x and find its way out

fair gull
#

well that would require your nas to act as an l3 switch and route packets from 1 network to the other one

ashen spindle
#

it did that then I guess?

fair gull
#

would be quite odd as thats not a default setting

ashen spindle
#

wait I remember if I change my pc's subnet I was also able to directly acces the cameras

fair gull
#

so you setup your nas as an l3 switch basically

ashen spindle
#

let me find out what the setup is, I certainly didnt do that manually lol

#

no I dont think so, lan1 has DHCP land2 has the .1.x static ip but the rest is default

fair gull
#

odd

ashen spindle
#

chinese software magic

fair gull
#

unless your pc is connected to the switch it shouldnt be able to just talk to the cams. unless the nas runs some intermediate software that routes just the cams

ashen spindle
#

cant do it right now because I am uploading something but I'm pretty sure I just set my ip4 subnet so i was on .1 and then it worked and I could get to the cams by their ip

fair gull
#

interesting

ashen spindle
#

eh, I'll just get a switch infront of the nas put it there then I also have a room for when I put my old pc there as second nas and dont need anything else

#

this is where knowing more about networking would make it easier but I'd also rather off myself before actually deep diving into that again dogekek

fair gull
#

i wonder if ill ever get to use my unifi stuff again

ashen spindle
#

no room for it?

fair gull

and then also find the time to drill through concrete walls

ashen spindle
#

ah yeah

#

so the reasons why I can't really change my setup either kek

fair gull
#

or maybe ill go with cable channel up at the ceiling and then go down to the door and patch in a very short flatpatch to go under the door

ashen spindle
#

kinda wish back then I had gotten the bigger model so I could run pihole and co on it instead of now waiting to retire my old pc to use as second nas but oh well

fair gull
#

i personally wouldnt invest in a nas anymore knowing how overpriced and underwhelming basically all their tooling is

#

id build my own if anything

ashen spindle
#

oh it is 100% because ease of use for the IP camera software that synology has

fair gull
#

id setup a synology vm on proxmox lol

#

and then truenas for my actual nas needs

umbral heron
#

If I weren't a dumdum and bought a NAS with ARM cpu I'd run TrueNAS too pepecry

ashen spindle
#

I think the license for the camera software is tied to the nas so idk if that's feely available if I had it in a vm

umbral heron
#

ig as long as it's DSM doesn't matter if it's native or in vm, if it's synology or xpenology

ashen spindle
#

idk at that point it's probably not worth my time to deal with that when it just worked out of the box and wasn't that expensive

# digital cliff so either you need a custom formed PCB or I dont even know some other weird way ...

I am absolutely not a person who could do this. It does sound hard, I understand that you need to design this and it requires knowledge in corresponding fields. My thought process was that maybe among some contacts I have I could find someone who could design just the way to install these sensors or at least give a specific explanation how it has to be done. It could help me tell if a few people I know are capable of such task. I just need to know first what kind of person am I looking for. Is it simply an electrical engineer or it has to be more specialised knowledge?

ashen spindle

its not about what BMG can do its about how much intel wants to lose money on it

#

yea

cursive summit
#

Are Intel going to 100% lose money with each GPU?

#

Like, they can cut costs, they don't need 16GB of VRAM on every single model

ashen spindle
#

look at the die size of the 770 vs the competing radeon gpu

#

it's like double the area, higher tdp, better node

cursive summit

But isn't 6nm kinda just a derivative of 7nm anyways

ashen spindle

yes but still some % better

cursive summit

Ah RX 7600 is also 6nm

ashen spindle
#

oh no I mean the rdna2 competition

cursive summit
#

Well yes RDNA2 is 7

#

RDNA3 seems to be on 6

#

And about similar-ish in performance

#

2070S is kinda nuts with that 12nm process

astral haven
#

the techpowerup specs database is not actual performance in game

cursive summit
#

Like, I don't see why A770 needs to have a 16GB model

#

For B770 or whatever, can't they cut down on the bus size and VRAM and make up the losses

astral haven
#

capacity and bus size are related but not stuck together

#

you could if you really really wanted to torture yourself stick a gigabyte of vram on a 512b bus or 64gb on a 16b bus

ashen spindle
#

ram is cheap and more ram means you can do well in upcoming stuff, in workstation tasks and things like rt/upscaling when they make use of it

cursive summit
#

Isn't bus size an easy way to cut on expenses?

ashen spindle
#

going for less ram isn't an option and also wouldn't save much

astral haven
cursive summit

AMD has been very forgiving in terms of VRAM size, but the bus size has been.. lacklustre

not to mention data center lmfao

nah they did get the first high-na machine from asml a while ago, asml showed pics of it

fickle ore

We all should hope it's a success for Intel. Be nice to have good progress for once

ashen spindle

well yes as consumer I'm worried about the price of zen5 x3d if arrow lake is that mediocre dogekek

fickle ore

ashen spindle

yeah but so far it's no signs of the turning happening lol

#

so I continue and point and laugh

fickle ore
#

thank god we have the new CEO

ashen spindle
#

usually we wouldn't even be talking about arrow lake much yet but we got such devastating slides so early on it's hard to make fun of intel

fickle ore
#

It'll take like 3-5

ashen spindle
#

sure but anything we are currently looking at is still not showing good promise lol

fickle ore
ashen spindle
#

arrow lake started definition same quarter as pat joined

#

and it's looking very not great

#

current metor lake mostly has issues on low power mode so it's a fine laptop chip but wont end in handhelds and wont compete with apple options really

fickle ore
#

Im not up to date on latest tech and whatnot, but how is the parity if each gen was normalized to same node e.g TSMC's?

ashen spindle
#

idk that doesnt even make sense to compare

fickle ore
#

But it does, you can see where Intel would be and where it is now, had their IFS kept up with TSMC

ashen spindle
#

they are using tsmc for tiles lol

astral haven
#

the only way to find that stuff out is by having the same product on the two nodes to compare
but that would be awfully dumb because tsmc is better at some things and intel is better at others (think cache vs clocks)

ashen spindle
#

thats meteor lake

fickle ore
ashen spindle
#

no because you design stuff around a node, normalizing doesn't really exist because on another node you would do things differently

#

and it's not really an isse of tsmc being ahead if most of the chips is made on tsmc lol

#

oh yeah also meteor lake got delayed at least twice, and desktop parts canned, not a great look either xD

fickle ore
#

Sure sure, but the market is definitely anticipating something.

#

And Pat's tenure is just 2 years by now. Plenty of time.

ashen spindle
#

idk what the market has to do with the products being bad dogekek

fickle ore
ashen spindle
#

and so do the upcoming products dogekek

#

hoping that the next-next gen fixes it is valid but I'm not going to shill for a company where I need to wait for that to maybe see something better

fickle ore
ashen spindle
#

yeah the market also makes a stock go up when you say AI often enough

astral haven
#

well noone is buying the products that dont exist yet

ashen spindle
#

like the market doesnt care how big mi300 is that it made nvidia to a fail of a pr stunt about it

#

they cared that lisa saids its the fastest product to ramp to 2billion

#

that moves the market

#

but if that comes from the product being great or black magic isn't show in the market price dogekek

astral haven
#

the actual performance of the product is usually priced in by launch thanks to speculation

#

the part that happens after launch is the reaction to the launch

ashen spindle
#

and because expected sales and such is known before in financial calls

fickle ore
#

They're pretty well estimated

ashen spindle
#

so arrow lake coming in Q4 2024 isnt priced into price yet

astral haven
#

if anyone is saying that, they are lying

#

if its public knowledge, its priced in

fickle ore
#

Not sure, something is being priced in right now by looking at the graph. Whether it's more of a intel comeback story or arrow lake I dont know

Also new exynos is not fantastic, look at tensor for the most recent exynos

vagrant pagoda
#

Ah

#

Yeah just saw a s23 review

#

Same performance with 20% less battery life

astral haven
#

S23 doesn't have an exynos variant does it?

#

Maybe it's just the s23u that was pure snapdragon and the lower variants got exynosed?

vagrant pagoda
#

The FE has both

astral haven
#

Fe is a very different device

vagrant pagoda
#

It's a SD 8 gen 1 vs exynos 2200

astral haven
#

Yea the 2200 was pretty trash

#

Faster than the 888 but also on a vastly better node for the same battery

#

And was late

vagrant pagoda
#

2200 is the newest

astral haven
#

Yes and no

#

2300 existed but was canceled because of how shit it is

#

And the 2400 exists and is releasing in less than a month

#

But the newest exynos chips are the tensors

#

They don't use the Radeon gpu, but the Radeon gpu was proven to be garbage by the 2200 anyways so it doesn't matter

#

Tensor g2 (oct 22) was released after the 2200 (feb 22) and the g3 came after that

#

Exynos is like Radeon, you don't really want to buy an exynos, the snapdragons are more expensive for barely better, but you don't want the competition to go away entirely...

Thinking of maybe upgrading to a 6800XT, they can be found used for sum 350-ish which is a banger deal

January 8

#

Too bad prices don't just magically fall on 17th or shortly after

#

Especially if you are not in america

#

Could be worth lurking on ebay or such to hop on some panic sellers

rotund crypt
#

i know thats a thing people do

#

camping on ebay once new cards come out

#

to get good deals

#

but is it really that effective

#

like if you have that strategy in mind, so have 1000 others

#

someone delibarely buying a 4070 isnt upgrading immediatly once a 4070 super or whatever comes out

#

since they arent seeking for the best anyways

Took them more than 20 years to fix the issue but they did it in the end: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=92176

AMD Mero powers Augmented Reality headset It has been a while since we heard about Mero, AMD’s low-power APU with RDNA2 graphics. The APU has been discovered by @_rogame running Magic Leap Demophon Augmented Reality headset. It was using Android 10 operating system and 720×920 resolution (for one eye). AMD Mero has been usually referred […]

not the exact same chip

astral haven
#

except its the other way around apparently

#

mero is the original with less parts disabled

ashen spindle
#

well yeah makes sense

#

van gogh made for surface, gets canned, mero for magic leap and then valve is like "uhhh we could buy that from you"

astral haven
#

and surface needs the IPU for the cameras too

#

its all coming together

ashen spindle
#

but it is nice I can finally link something to lana the next time she wants to argue that valve designed the steam deck chip dogekek

astral haven
#

well now theres the new one

#

and that one very well could have been valve requested

ashen spindle
#

which is custom made to valve yeah bc volume demand is there now

thick elk
#

Didn't watch the video before, but interesting find.
It does make some sense to share a semi-custom design with multiple companies.

ashen spindle
#

it was known before just obviously off the record now we have something in hardware that wouldn't make sense otherwise

wheat plume
#

purely functional for loop is cool :D

ashen spindle
#

lana that's just a recursive function..

thick elk
#

I just never looked at it in this detail, but everything together makes sense.
The Deck was meant to ship at least a decent unit count but not enough for custom silicon per se.
Magic leap had a lot of investor money behind it that could bankroll the endevour.

astral haven
#

also probably compiler hell

ashen spindle

yes recursion for just a foor loop is a horrible idea
