Acronis? Isn't that software?

wtf is the acronis edition

yes

it is backup software

So they just give you a subscription or something?

So it’s just a deal that makes the sad cheaper and you can just ignore the software

so you prob get a year of a backup software

Samsung has officially unveiled the Galazy S4 Zoom - the nearest thing yet to a true camera / phone hybrid.  The 'camera side' features a 24-240mm equivalent F3.1-6.3 lens with a zoom ring around the barrel, in front of a 16MP 1/2.3" CMOS sensor. It includes optical image stabilisation, a built-in xenon flash, ISO 100-3200, 4 fps continuous shoo...

tbh my phone has alot longer zoom range with a larger sensor on the main

mine is .6x, 1x, 3x, 10x optical vs the 1x-10x that the s4 is
the xperia 1 v is .7x, 1x, 3.5x-5x

There's some rumor that Apple will use 6x instead of 10x

astral haven

the f4.9 240mm equivalent lens

sharp badger

Well seems like the S22U/S23U have the same and the S21U has the 240mm

astral haven
#

they switched from a 1/3.24" sensor on the 20 and 21 to a 1/3.52" on the 22 and 23

the "change" in focal length is purely equivalent

the equivalent focal length depends on the sensor size too

the sensor is physically like a 40mm focal length or something

The Nvidia memory lawsuit was really stupid.

reef patrol

The 3.5GB VRAM thing or?

ashen spindle
#

nvidia made sense that was literal false specs not just marketing

astral haven
#

and technically nvidia was not explicitly stating incorrect information, just omitting a major caviat

#

and bulldozer wasnt explicitly lying at the time, afterwards however a formal definition for cpu core was legalized to prevent that from happening again lmao

reef patrol
#

It was a pretty big fucking one - That customers couldn't workaround if memory serves. Couldn't tell games to NOT access that last 512mb of VRAM that utterly sucked, which tanked performance in newer games more than a card with 3½GB of GENUINE VRAM.

astral haven
#

🤷 the perf loss in 2022 was not substantial vs the 980 with 4gb

#

neither can run games at high enough settings or resolutions to care about that .5gb

reef patrol
#

Brain is running on old data here. I specifically remember there being articles showing that anything that tried to access that last 512mb of VRAM (which was noticeably slower) would tank performance ,specifically because of that. Games didn't know it was a thing, and to avoid it.

astral haven
#

it could in theory, but gotta remember the 970 also had cores cut off vs the 980

#

if you extrapolated core counts + lower clock, it was already supposed to be 20+% slower, and in reality games that didnt hit all 4gb were only 10% ish slower, and the games that did hit all 4 were the ones that ended up 20% slower than the 980

#

but it cost 60% of the 980

#

and then that went down to under 50% with the rebate

like the lack of disclosure was awful, but the perf at least was as advertised

they are using the built in ssd controller on their cpu paired with offboard flash

the things that they solder on or add on a card are not ssds

#

at least starting with m1

mild dome
#

Conceivably if people could replace their own batteries they could use a phone for maybe 4-8 years.

The dying battery however forces a 2-4 year life cycle, effectively doubling profits

astral haven
#

thats also not true
its also possible to just not overvolt the battery so that it lasts forever

#

buuuut that would decrease the number on the spec sheet that makes them look good

#

lithium ion battery backup systems can run for 10k-20k cycles on nmc chemistry but not from 4.2 to 3.5, they use 4.1 to 3.6 which is alot lower capacity

#

my phone goes up to 4.35

mild dome
#

Heat is what kills these batteries isn't it?

It's also worth noting a lot of larger battery arrays lock a percentage of the true capacity away so that as cells begin dying it can start activating the unused cells to give the illusion of a tougher battery. Making it feel like it lasted longer to customers

Which isn't a bad thing, as customers would find consistency of larger batteries in cars and homes to be more critical then getting 100% of the capacity right away and losing that over time

astral haven
#

the main killer of batteries is charging,
heat doesnt help when theres too much, but a moderate amount of heat helps decrease the wear on the battery

#

and the larger battery arrays mostly lock the percentage of capacity via voltage not by spare cells

#

they do use spare cells ofc because statistics are not on their side

Anyone here ever had to do an RMA for anything?

#

Well, 7 months after purchase, I had to RMA my monitor. A defect suddenly manifested.

#

This is what the defect looked like, for reference:

#

The photo doesn't truly capture how severe the defect was; the entire screen was a mess.

#

Anyway... long story short, this was my first ever RMA that I've ever had to do.

#

Got the ball rolling about 1.5 weeks ago, and have been stuck borrowing a subpar VA panel in the meantime...

#

I can't even play Planetside 2 right now... the ghosting and motion blur on this borrowed panel is awful.

#

The replacement monitor started shipping roughly 2 days ago. Current ETA is Thursday.

#

It's never soon enough; my PS2 addiction is practically screaming at me right now.

#

Like, the monitor I had was a ViewSonic XG2431 240Hz IPS panel. And during the 7 months I had it, it was a great monitor.

#

Its strobing backlight feature allowed me to use it for 60Hz console games with almost no motion blur at all, with the standard 240Hz mode being used for my PC games.

#

I only hope that the replacement lasts a good bit longer than a mere 7 months.

#

This is the official page for the monitor I had:
https://www.viewsonic.com/global/products/lcd/XG2431

The ViewSonic® XG2431 is a 24” IPS-panel gaming monitor with 1ms response time, a 240Hz refresh rate, and AMD FreeSync technology, providing the perfect blend of speed, hyper-responsive control, and vivid IPS colours. Engineered for hardcore and casual gamers alike, the XG2405's sleek, 3-side borderless, ergonomic design make it the ideal choice...

#

If I had more money, I might have gone for a 300Hz TN panel. Ah well.

#

And unfortunately for me, OLEDs are unlikely to be within my budget range in the foreseeable future. No one is building 1080p OLED models, at least. Only 2k or above.

#

There's apparently no mainstream market left for monitors with reduced resolution, in exchange for much higher refresh rates.

Then again, that sort of thing was something that multisync CRT monitors were known for.

astral haven
#

at this point the monitor controller is becoming one of the larger costs in the monitor

#

as well as the power supply

#

where the panel really isnt mattering as much

#

and bigger number of ks looks alot better

runic depot
#

It would just be nice if I could get the benefits of a CRT, without having to break the bank with an OLED.

astral haven
#

oled is not similar to crt

#

strobing like dyac or elmb are tho

runic depot
#

I said the 'benefits.' Ergo, the superb contrast ratio, among other things.

astral haven
#

crts have contrast ratios below 700:1

#

and their response times are not that fast if you include both rise and fall times

#

lcds just used to be 2-3 orders of magnitude worse than they currently are

runic depot
#

Weren't CRTs still good at handling moving scenes in ways that LCDs often have trouble with?

astral haven
#

yes, but oleds have the same trouble

#

unless you strobe

#

but lcds are better at strobing than oleds

#

Makes me sad that SED tech died before it could take off.

#

A surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) is a display technology for flat panel displays developed by a number of companies. In a general sense, a SED consists of a matrix of tiny cathode-ray tubes, each "tube" forming a single sub-pixel on...

So utterly close to having a display tech that had a bunch of the strengths of CRTs, while being wayyyyy lighter.

astral haven
#

people forget that the actual benefits of the crt were very limited

#

the true improvements in look from crt were mostly taking advantage of the drawbacks rather than being real benefits

#

the biggest being true optical anti dither

#

but thats also in other circles called being blurry

runic depot
#

I liked the response times and motion clarity, personally.

astral haven
#

the response times were only half good

runic depot
#

Part of it was just the nature of how CRTs draw the image, wasn't it?

astral haven
#

and the motion clarity gets absolutely slaughtered by tech like ulmb or elmb

runic depot
#

Analog electron gun versus fixed-pixel LCDs?

astral haven
#

you are thinking of the input latency

#

not the response times

runic depot
#

A bit of both, honestly.

#

LCD response times are at least partly tied to how long it takes for any given pixel to change colour, correct?

astral haven
#

the input latency was great, and its just getting to the point of being imperceptible just now

astral haven
runic depot
#

Well, in any case, I still wouldn't mind a lesser resolution monitor that had kickass refresh rates as its main selling point.

astral haven
#

yea but the problem is you dont save any money vs a higher res monitor with lower refresh rates

runic depot
#

It's not about saving money. It's about the tradeoffs I'm willing to make; the games I play benefit more from higher refresh rates and better response times.

#

And better framerates, of course.

astral haven
#

so just buy one?

#

500hz is plenty nice

runic depot
#

No one builds high performance monitors at 720p or lower.

#

That's what I'm saying here.

#

And I'd be okay with that, V.

#

My desk is kinda small anyhow.

astral haven
#

yea it would be tiny, and it wouldnt be higher refresh rate or cheaper

runic depot
#

...You realise that 720p describes a resolution of 1280×720, right?

astral haven
#

practically it would be a 14 inch screen as the practical largest that wouldnt just cause it to cost more than 1080p

runic depot
#

The resolution reduction would see some nice framerate gains in the games I play, though.

astral haven
runic depot
#

Planetside 2 being one of them.

astral haven
#

isnt planetside 2 heavily cpu bound???

#

cause noone is stopping you from buying a 1440p monitor and running it with integer scaling

runic depot
#

Yes, but GPU-bound events can still occur, especially if the particle quality is maxed out (tracers stop rendering at short ranges if you don't increase particle quality, and that's a problem if you're trying to walk your tank shots).

astral haven
#

not a chance

#

its really damn hard to make a particle system that isnt cpu bound

runic depot
#

It's also hard to make an MMOFPS whose performance remains 'playable' at that scale.

astral haven
#

and even if the particle system was on gpu, the shaders used for integer scaling would be sitting idle regardless

runic depot
#

Also, I still play the game, and I keep an eye on the performance metrics. There are definitely GPU-bound situations that occur at maximum particle quality in larger fights.

astral haven
#

so you can just run integer scaling on the gpu no problemo

runic depot
#

Integer scaling is messier, compared to native resolution.

astral haven
astral haven
#

720p native vs 1440p integer scaled is no contest whatsoever

runic depot
astral haven
#

uh
wouldnt worry about bleeding edge monitors with a midrange gpu

runic depot
#

High refresh rates are still nice to have, even if the framerate doesn't always exceed it.

astral haven
#

you should never spend $800 on the display and $300 on the gpu

runic depot
#

The ViewSonic I described was on sale.

astral haven
#

the viewsonic you described isnt pushing boundries

runic depot
#

And for the record, this GPU cost me $587.81 Canadian Dollars (after taxes and shipping fees).

astral haven
#

so about $300 of real money, got it /s

runic depot
#

For some reason, Canada gets really awful markups for most of the better GPUs.

#

Like, more than the exchange rate alone would justify.

#

Don't get me wrong; I'd love to have something better than this particular GPU.

But I took what I could afford.

astral haven
#

nothing on pcpp canada seems particularly out of line from what im used to

runic depot
#

Anything that exceeds $400 to $500 CAD is very close to the absolute maximum limit of my hobby budget. And even then, it forces me to eat lean for the month.

astral haven
#

well sure, but the same would be even more true for a monitor that costs a grand usd lol

#

spending most of 2k cad on a monitor isnt gonna happen if 500 cad on a gpu is hard

runic depot
#

The ViewSonic cost me $461.20 CAD. I ate lean that month, too.

#

But it was worth it.

astral haven
runic depot
#

Realistically speaking, my next upgrade is probably going to be on the CPU side.

astral haven
#

that gets you a nice crisp 720p experience in game, and a nice and crisp 1440p experience out of game

runic depot
#

Specifically, I'm hoping to grab the 5800x3D when it's on sale.

#

shrug

astral haven
#

not outside of the us lol

runic depot
#

Like I said.

#

But yeah, that hefty 3D V-Cache actually has tangible gains in Planetside 2

#

People have playtested it, even.

astral haven
#

less likely to see those gains the slower the gpu btw

runic depot
#

As I said though, the GPU-bound situations occur in specific, heavy load situations.

#

And in fairness, the only time it really matters, is when I'm flying. For some weird reason, air controls have a tendency to briefly lock up during a GPU load spike.

astral haven
#

gpu limited happens more often than gpu bound tho

runic depot
#

Hence, why I mentioned the one time it tends to have any real impact.

#

PS2 flight controls are... weird.

#

Scroll up.

astral haven
runic depot
#

I'm referring to how they briefly lock up during load GPU load spikes; 95% to 99% load

#

And it's weird, because flight controls seem to be the only thing that actually locks up during a GPU load spike in that game. Tank controls don't lock up, infantry controls don't lock up.

#

And it's not a 'complete' lock up, but more like brief moments where inputs are not read until the load spike resolves.

#

Which makes for awkward aiming with an ESF (the main VTOL fighter in that game).

astral haven
#

you sure its not imc load that is causing you to get hit by iodie bugs?

#

it will not make the usb disconnect noise when the usb controller reboots

runic depot
#

Pretty sure. I had metrics enabled in-game, and consistently observed air controls would be interrupted when the GPU load spiked to 95% to 99%

astral haven
#

yea but those numbers can be completely wrong

#

the only useful metric of actual gpu load is tdp%

runic depot
#

The problem goes away if I cap the framerate to a value where 95% to 99% GPU load situations no longer occur.

#

I'm referring to the 'GPU usage' metric.

astral haven
#

yes but gpu usage can be a symptom of the problem, not the causee

runic depot
#

It's a known issue for more than just me, though.

astral haven
#

remember, a gpu can hit 100% gpu usage while running idle 99.9% of the time

#

and gpu usage can be under 50% while being by far and away the bottleneck, tho thats significantly harder to do

runic depot
#

And again, the utilization spikes occur only in those heavy particle load situations that I've described, where particle quality is maxed, and the fighting is heavy.

#

I even ran a multitude of loading and stability tests, just to make sure there weren't memory errors taking place.

astral haven
#

the game could for example be trying to load an asset from storage, but while its doing that, the gpu pipeline is in a loop waiting, your usage would slam to 99, your power usage would drop to nothing while it stalls, and the bottleneck would be your ssd or your ram

runic depot
#

Yes, even the 'torture tests'

#

The SSD I'm using will definitely be one of the other things I replace with an upgrade.

#

My current SSD is an Intel 660p series. Not the quickest SSD, but still an order of magnitude faster than the old HDD I used to own, ages ago.

astral haven
#

weeeeeeeeeellllllll

#

thats not always true

#

the 6x0p series are known for bogging down to below hdd speeds under load

runic depot
#

Hence, why I said it's not the quickest. And will definitely be one of the other components that get replaced.

astral haven
#

has the cratering prices made it to yall yet

runic depot
#

Shorter loading screens are always welcome.

astral haven
#

yea dang 2tb for 140 cad?
from samsung no less

#

what does it actually do?

runic depot
#

$140 CAD is well within my budget range, thankfully.

astral haven
#

not recommending it because its a samsung, but usually the samsung is the top of the price stack of the consumer drives

#

the sn850x looks sweeet

runic depot
#

I try to aim for the best performance I can afford to have.

astral haven
#

define best performance lol

runic depot
#

Well, for an SSD? Quickest read and write speeds at 2TB capacity that I can afford.

astral haven
#

cause the fastest ssd im aware of is only $80 on ebay right now
at least until cxl releases

#

it definetly isnt 2tb tho lol

runic depot
#

That said, I've been considering having a 2nd SSD reserved solely for the OS.

astral haven
#

few oses still fit in 16gb lol

runic depot
#

I don't mind having a 64GB model for the OS.

#

Or whichever size is required.

astral haven
#

unfortunately 16gb is all you get if you want an nvme ramdisk that doesnt lose data on power off

runic depot
#

Mostly just thinking that it would be convenient to have the OS on a separate drive, so I don't have to reinstall the entire OS when swapping out the drive I use for 'everything else.'

astral haven
#

actually dont its not fast

#

it does absolutely slaughter in benchmarks tho

runic depot
#

Rather, the OS drive doesn't necessarily have to be as blisteringly fast as the drive used for game assets, right?

astral haven
#

yea
the real reason to use this drive is its actually stable
aka it doesnt lose data if you leave it sitting on a counter
but its so insanely expensive that its not worth getting unless you are as crazy as me

runic depot
#

Well, yes. But having to reinstall the OS every time I upgrade the drive strikes me as... tedious.

#

In regards to what V said, rather.

astral haven
#

but for the price of this drive you could buy a pair of 1tb fast normal ssds tho lmao

#

which is why i bought 4 of them and raided them together

runic depot
#

For some reason, a part of me smiles inside anytime I hear about people with RAID arrays.

astral haven
#

did i post menchbarks here?

runic depot
#

Just something about it feels... special. Old, but reliable, I guess?

astral haven
#

old sure
reliable no chance lol

runic depot
#

Rather, RAID was developed a relatively 'long' time ago, correct?

astral haven
#

not as long as the wheel, not as recent as stable diffusion

runic depot
#

Hardy har har...

#

Tech-wise, it's kinda old, isn't it?

astral haven
#

its deprecated is what it is

runic depot
#

Wasn't its main purpose to act as a self-redundant drive handler?

astral haven
runic depot
#

Interesting.

#

In any case, any potential drive upgrades will have to wait until I get paid again.

astral haven
#

quad optane raid boiz

#

runic depot
#

Is Western Digital a viable brand for an SSD?

astral haven
#

yes

#

sn850x is probably your raw fastest option

runic depot
#

That was actually the exact model I was just looking at.

astral haven
# astral haven

heres a more normal nand ssd for comparison
top 3 numbers higher is better
bottom number lower is better

#

oooooh dear

runic depot
#

Gahhhh, that SN850X is 56% off right now, but I already maxed out my hobby budget for this month.

astral haven
#

this is why raid was made irrelevant
a single one of these isnt faster than the fastest network connections, but it doesnt take many...

runic depot
#

$154.97 CAD (regular price would be $359.97 CAD).

astral haven
#

including tax or something?

#

or is pcpartpicker canada showing in usd

runic depot

astral haven

newegg has it more expensive

PC Part Picker is listing the exact same sale price on my end.

#

Right down to the last cent.

astral haven

runic depot
#

uBlock Origin blocks the WD link.

astral haven

yea its a tracking link

#

i can bypass ublock, but i have it blocked on a network level

runic depot
#

I installed uBlock Origin deliberately, though.

astral haven
#

🤷 up to you

#
#

heres the actual link after looking it up online lol

#

so yea 135 cad confirmed

#

1 month delay tho

runic depot
#

I presume Newegg Canada lacks this delay.

#

I dunno.

#

Oh, hold on.

#

I just did a price check at the final checkout screen.

#

After applying taxes and shipping fees, the WD price actually winds up being slightly more expensive.

astral haven
#

Ffs
Lovely

runic depot
#

WD final price: $174.81 CAD

Newegg Canada final price: $173.57 CAD

#

That 1 month delay is probably the definitive dealbreaker, regardless.

#

Anyway, I put that SSD onto my Newegg wishlist. I suspect the sale will end long before I get paid again (next payment is July 19th), but eh.

#

At least I'll be prepared to grab one on the next sale.

''What Sony is actually saying is that Xperia devices meet both those standards. Other manufacturers - Apple for example - only list IP68. This would mean it's dustproof, but in this situation, Apple is only saying it meets the submersion standard and you cannot assume that it is protected against water jets.

So while it might seem that Sony isn't sure what it's saying, it's actually providing more information, which should give you great peace of mind about its devices.''

Pocket-lint

So considering the old rumours that they were working on the successor back in like 2020, canceled it and supposedly now picked it up again

#

Would have been a pretty modern SoC if it launched in 2021

I dunno what happened, that they are so cheap now

Maybe the big factories got their hands on the schematics

So whereas a few years they used to be really rare and expensive, with mass production they are cheap af

I love finding really random, in depth projects like this. I have no idea what any of this is, but the dude is so invested 😄

Trying to comprehend why is it so expensive

And what makes it any better than a 100$ CD player

wheat plume

I hate that 700 euro is considered midrange for phones now .-.

severe phoenix
#

Bul

#

Bull

#

Even in the US that's still high end

cursive summit
#

Only stupid ass journos and Samsung/Apple buyers call that "mid"

wheat plume
#

midrange

#

Oh
It's 600

Still high

cursive summit

mid-range

wheat plume

Right???

cursive summit

That's just an idiot of a journo writing shit they have no clue about

ashen spindle
#

If that’s not mid range what are iPhone then? Halo products?

wheat plume
#

Flagships

cursive summit
#

Shit products cause they are valued like trash

wheat plume
#

Yeah

cursive summit
#

Flagships are a fine word, but even flagships don't go above 1000$

#

Just shit pricing cause they can get away with it

ashen spindle
#

That doesn’t really change just because you dislike them

#

Folds go above a grand too etc.

cursive summit
#

Right

#

Cause just being 600$ automatically makes it mid-range

#

I sure would love you to list the features this phone lacks compared to S23 Ultra or 14 Pro Max

#

Come on, go, I'll wait

#

Good luck while at it too

ashen spindle
#

I really don’t care

#

Price wise that is mid range compare to the other phones on the market

cursive summit
#

The reality check is that Nothing 2 encorporates top end hardware that current flagships have

#

For what, half price?

#

That's sure sounding very mid-range to me

#

Xiaomi and others do the same

#

If we allow Samsung and Apple to dictate what's top end and what's not, we'll be paying 2x for phones again before too long

ashen spindle
#

So 600 gets you a flagship and 1500 also gets you a flagship? What’s the point if you can’t differentiate price points

cursive summit
#

Brand value

#

It's literally just brands

ashen spindle
#

You argue about features when it’s about the price

cursive summit
#

Wtf kind of argument is that

#

We are now segmenting phone tiers by price?

#

I sure would love to buy a 3310 for 1.5k and call it a top end flagship

#

Segmentation will always be features only

#

And these phones have comparable and equal features to your 1.5k "flagships"

ashen spindle
cursive summit
#

Well, it's not considered mid-range

#

If some idiot wrote that it is, I don't care what you say, it's not

#

It isn't, and it will not be

glossy drum
#

Just because that started the conversation doesn't mean that's all there is to this conversation though.

cursive summit
#

700$ is well into high-end

hoary tendon
#

the phone is high end, but it has mid range prices

cursive summit
#

If some guy reviews S23s and 14s and thinks that 700$ is now mid-range, doesn't mean they literally are

ashen spindle
#

If you have well selling devices for double the price I find it hard to say it’s not mid range

cursive summit
#

Brand value?

hoary tendon
ashen spindle
#

If it’s half way from the still well selling top end isn’t that kinda perfect spot for mid range?

cursive summit
#

It's not half way in terms of features, it's comparable if not on-par with features

#

Price should not be considered a comparison factor to classify phone tiers

ashen spindle
#

For phone prices I would consider 6 or 700 definitely mid range when you look at how many people spend much more

cursive summit
#

And that makes Pixels, high end Xiaomis, Asus, ROGs and others "mid-range"

#

When they pack best-in-class hardware in some cases

#

That makes virtually no sense

#

The very own S23 and A14 are mid-range if we take into account charging power

#

If not low-end

#

Chinese phones have 120W+, so that automatically makes them flagships

#

S23U is low end

#

Makes sense?

ashen spindle
#

So if I sell you a 600$ phone you call the price mid range low end or flagship depending on what the phone is?

#

You can define it by features but it makes little sense to disagree with Lana’s point when that’s not what she complained about

cursive summit
#

I would not call the phone anything depending on price, depends on what the phone is

#

Lana complains about the fact that people like that guy, and you in this case, categorize phones by price

#

It makes no sense, since price does not represent the quality of the phone

#

Features, quality of life, service quality, etc are not to be gauged by price

ashen spindle
#

Then I’m confused how you were able to disagree before the link was posted so it wasn’t known what the phone in question was

cursive summit
#

Good lord

#

Li-Fi finally becoming a thing?

#

Only problem with this would be transmission through solid objects

#

But a really good technology

#

I wonder if it would make sense to change the cellular grid to use Li-Fi for point-to-point bandwidth transfer into beacons, and 5G or such for local connect

Doubt that will become a standard honestly

This could be an interesting way of replacing cables

wheat plume

#

why you pay to remove it

ashen spindle

because its work to remove it

costs more to have someone remove parts than the few cents if you have it in all orders in mass amounts
