intel built for science

ashen spindle

AMX and all does good things sure, but it was supposed to launch vs last gens epyc, so for general consumer it has so much less to offer

astral haven

found specs
dual ponte vecchio = 1.5p-ops int8, 4x that per system 6 p-ops total
h100 = most of 4p-ops int8, 8x that per system for 32 p-ops total
pretty similar total system power

the nvidia system is slightly higher but not crazy amount

gusty kiln
#

but 5X the performace

yea
the a100 (last gen) was 1.2p-ops x8 per system for almost 10 total

how does the MI250 stack up?

.3p-ops per gpu

#

for mi250

gusty kiln

ooof

astral haven

amd and intel built for science

gusty kiln

so is all this hype for MI300 or something else?

astral haven

intels happened to be designed to scale down to low precision but its still not on the same level

astral haven
gusty kiln
#

xilinx purchase aging like fine wine

astral haven

mi300a is supposed to be 5x mi250x so 1.5 p-ops

#

but its 900w per

vs 600 per on intel and nvidia

gusty kiln
#

hmmm

astral haven
#

thats only int8 tho

#

and theres a ton more that goes into the large ai models

#

particularly regarding memory and networking

gusty kiln
#

I'm just trying to understand why nvidia and AMD are holding hands in this AI hype

#

at least with current product roadmap, AMD doesn't seem to be a standout

because nvidia uses amd cpus in their systems for now lmao

ashen spindle
#

The status on #aurora: 10000 blades delivered, each with 2 CPU + 6 GPU. Blades initially shipped with regular @intel CPU, now 75% replaced with Max CPU (hence why no #Top500 sub).

But 63744 GPUs at 52 TF/GPU means an Rpeak of around 3.3 ExaFLOP FP64!! That's not counting CPUs

#

that 3.3 is using the old info, its 2.3-2.5 with the actual power they will set it to

ashen spindle
#

ohh wait right I forgot they called hbm variants max cpus and pvc is now gpu max series

#

argh stupid naming

#

yeah did get that mixed up

#

anywa, that factors in aurora which isnt fully runnign yet, amd has el cpaitan coming 2h this years that another 2 exaflops projected currently

#

the biggest issue is that aurora has been originally a thing with xeon phi lol so it's been quite some years and only now it seems like it might finally finish

thats not a good track record in comparison

frozen ingot

that's what people said yes

cursive summit
halcyon moss
reef patrol
cursive summit
#

I do wonder what dropping 16bit and 32bit boot would do for performance

#

I imagine just putting an emulation layer for 32bit software would make those softwares slower

#

Than just running "natively"

#

But what do you really gain from that sacrifice?

ashen spindle
#

This is emulation like emulating an android game for arm, as you said we went over it when the original idiots covered it wrongly, it doesnโ€™t cause any really performance issues

halcyon moss
#

What X86S really means is removing the ability to boot 32-bit systems on bare metal. UEFI has already effectively eliminated the ability to boot 16-bit operating systems on bare metal, and barely anybody noticed.

ashen spindle
#

This breaks dos and custom OS bootloaders and nothing else really

halcyon moss
#

and custom os bootloaders will adapt

#

and freedos as well i guess

ashen spindle
#

Yes

cursive summit
#

So

#

What do we gain from this?

ashen spindle
#

Cpus donโ€™t need to waste some area on it and save validation time and work

halcyon moss
#

faster boot maybe?

#

cheaper cpus? lol

cursive summit
#

CPUs have 16bit and 32bit components on them?

ashen spindle
#

Is it that hard to read the first paragraph of articles

#

Yes they do still have parts for it

mild dome
#

Backwards compatibility is really important in industrial settings. Even if the newer stuff is faster, better and nore accurate industries tend to have processes and system designed to run on and with older standards and fix them later in the process.

One good example is Excel has a bug with its dating system. It shows dates that don't exist. This was a deliberate design choice because Microsoft was competing with another spreadsheet program with the exact same bug and they wanted to be intercompatible with it, at least up until they became the standard spreadsheet program. However now massive industries including the financing sector rely on that bug existing so Microsoft can never fix it

ashen spindle
#

Ok no clue what thatโ€™s got to do with this though

mild dome
#

I just meant that Intel likely kept the old 16 and 32 bit systems on the chip for backwards compatibility with industries

#

Because industries likely have decades old machines that they occasionally strap new cpus onto, but simultaneously need those cpus to run really old code flawlessly

fair gull
#

no

#

the industries runs decade old machines with decade old code

reef patrol
#

They also have new hardware built for them though.

#

I.e. new, old hardware*

#

If a factory needs an updated piece of software that currently runs only on XP or even 7, it's often a multi million dollar pricetag from a software dev. Makes it real competitive to just stay on old hardware and keep buying old and new stock.

Which is actually kinda ass, I used remote play on PS4 once

Even with high bandwidth internet, remote play's latency is atrocious

That little project Q thing is genuinely dead if it costs more than, idk, 149$?

severe phoenix

The ONLY thing I'm just a tiny bit excited for with Project Q

#

Is if Sony includes a decently powerful chip inside

And it gets jailbroken

PS Vita 2 wooo

ashen spindle

Tf is that guy on about,psvr2 is selling more than psvr1 was

#

Not as much as they hoped but thatโ€™s far from dying

cursive summit

PSVR2 prolly won't be a flop anyways

#

With Sony pushing on it, it'll sell

#

VR though in general has been less popular than expected

#

Lack of interest from consumers, I wonder why, genuinely

PS Remote Play was a thing since like 2016 at least

wheat plume

a gamepad

that streams game footage wirelesslyy from the console its connected to

cursive summit
#

They just released a "dedicated hardware" thing for Remote Play

More trash, basically

#

Just like their headphones and those wireless earbuds

wheat plume
#

Still reminds me of the WiiU

#

a gamepad with screen to strteam game from console to it instead of the TV

severe phoenix
#

Except this uses internet and not your local connection

wheat plume
#

for some reason

#

if it can only stream from PS5, then why need internet and not local network?

this isnt your favorite sports team getting a win, this is a company whos interests are to screw you out of your money lol

cursive summit
#

The sooner Acti-Blizz gets new management, the better

#

Ever since the Acti-blizz merger they went to shit

#

Someone needs to overhaul that company, if it's Microsoft, then so be it

astral haven
#

well technically the goal is just to take your money, the screwing is optional
most companies want you to feel happy about spending the money with them

final flame
#

Eh debatable whether Microsoft will make a meaningful difference

ashen spindle
#

you got a vivid fantasy at least

cursive summit
#

hands off approach

#

What's the problem then?

#

Who cares if Acti-blizz is acquired then

ashen spindle
#

because stuff like cloud gaming, game pass and such can be done without replacing management of subsidiaries

astral haven
#

yay for making monopolies as large as possible

ashen spindle
#

also you cant call it a good thing then try to argue its still a good thing because the bad thing might not happen

#

unless you are an actual shareholder the first though should be whats the benefit/problem for you as consumer

cursive summit
#

I don't consume any Acti-blizz games nor I am a shareholder

#

I just advocate for better treatment of employees

#

And better game developement practices

astral haven
#

the benefit is theres a chance of the company culture changing to be less toxic and potentially making it more palatable to spend money there

cursive summit
#

I hope that Microsoft will be able to improve both the work culture there as well as having stricter game development standards

ashen spindle
#

stopping a ceo harassing the employer is something the law should stop not a large company by merging lol

cursive summit
#

So, that in my eyes is a win

ashen spindle
#

they arent in florida so its not the worst

astral haven
#

everywhere else you can only bring up stuff in the past 5-10 years

#

and im not talking about actual crimes

ashen spindle
#

from what we know that is enough to have shit on kotick lol

astral haven
#

im talking just about toxic not actively hostile

ashen spindle
#

either way its a far stretch assuming that will get better when so far nothing in that way changed in the companies they got and they didnt imply they would improve that

#

thats just wishful thinking without any evidence that they would do it

astral haven
#

yep

#

and the potential downside is every game that microsoft has released post aquisition of smaller companies has been sanded flat to remove anything potentially innovative

gusty kiln

Wish battery replacement stations are more common in the US like in some Asian countries

#

Though they are mostly for electric mopeds

astral haven
#

meh its only useful if you have a monopoly and thats bad

#

only reason it takes so long for me is i bought a model that literally cannot fast charge whatsoever

final flame
#

The issue is the US's infrastructure is built around gas cars

astral haven
#

cars like mine havent been sold since 2015

final flame
#

The way the US is spread out makes owning a car almost a requirement

astral haven
#

yep and shockingly it would work great for electric cars if there were as many places to refuel them

final flame
#

once saw a video of someone with a generator in the back of their Tesla in order to charge it on the side of the road

astral haven
#

because people in fact do need breaks to stretch their legs, and electric cars dont require you to monitor your charging so you can leave it alone while you grab snacks or go to the restroom

final flame
astral haven
#

look up the bmw i3 rex

#

oem built in generator

#

basically a lawnmower engine

final flame
#

Lol nice

astral haven
#

its actually a problem tho since it doesnt provide enough power to climb grades

#

and the us model only allows the generator to recharge the car when its stopped below 7% battery

#

so if you run out of battery on an incline, you have to pull off every basically 10 miles to let the generator recharge
