vagrant pagoda
#

amd bought them to bring the hardware inhouse

#

as they were before just selling to other vendors

astral haven
#

But for example they have been using dedicated serdes units for the past 25 years

#

And their modern FPGAs are mostly lut based with gate arrays between the luts

#

And inside of the LUTs they have special arithmetic processing units

#

The reason that xilinx has gone so far ahead of altera is that altera has been focusing on making good FPGAs where xilinx has gone to make good accelerators that incorporate features from FPGAs

vagrant pagoda
#

yes but its still fpga

astral haven
#

If you want to use that definition of FPGA then sure you can be wrong if you like...

#

The thing is nowadays it's mostly done using level 3 switching
Which is mostly done via Broadcom off the shelf switches or with custom Asics like juniper and Cisco

#

Which have an x86 CPU for the routing features that can't be done via level 3 switching

#

Or in the case of Cisco a custom ISA CPU that's not x86 but is a CPU

#

And Broadcom uses arm but that's internal to the switch chips

Someone just needs to make a hydroformed titanium mouse and just kill all this lightweight shit.

Hydroform super thin for the shape and weight

Watch live as our mega Moon rocket launches an uncrewed Orion spacecraft on a six-week mission around the Moon and back to Earth. NASA is targeting Wednesday, Nov. 16, for the launch of the Artemis I Moon mission during a two-hour launch window that opens at 1:04 a.m. EST (0604 UTC). During #Artemis I, Orion will lift off aboard the Space Launch...

astral haven
#

Iso strength ofc

vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

whats the need?

#

idgaf about how thin it is as long as its light and has the right shape

#

carbon fiber works great tho its spensive, its definetly cheaper than hydroformed titanium lmao

#

its also relatively thin

vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

yes but you need either thickness or structure to get the titanium to be strong enough

#

structure compromises shape which is the main goal, so your only option is also thickness

vagrant pagoda
#

The titanium would work harden as soon as you hydroform it

#

So it's pretty amazing how thin you can get it and still be strong

astral haven
#

im aware of how titanium is made strong

#

but titanium is what 2.5x the density of cf?

vagrant pagoda
#

Yes but cf's strength to weight ratio is lower

#

Titanium has a great strength to volume ratio

astral haven
#

are you sure?

#

and i mean without hollow structures like they use in airplanes

#

i know that using birdbone structures like in planes you can get alot higher strength to weight ratios, but that isnt feasible in a mouse

vagrant pagoda
#

It's why you use titanium inserts in CF for mounts. It the mount would have to too large in CF.

#

Because the stress is localized

#

The CF structure can easily take the load over large area, but you'd need a giant fastener. This kills any weight savings

#

You use Ti for the insert to distribute the force over a larger area, because it's strength to volume is much larger.

#

It's the same with steel vs aluminum

#

An aluminum part has to be larger than steel part for the same strength, but can still be lighter

#

You can make a connecting rod and piston in a race engine out of aluminum because there is room for the extra volume without fundamentally changing the working dimensions.

#

But things like the crank and wrist pins stay steel because of size constraints

#

And aluminum crank shaft would have bearing journals so large you'd loose all the weight savings making the rods bigger

#

But anyway

#

It would be cool to have a hydroformed titanium mouse, it would be extremely hard to beat the weight.

astral haven
#

i need some sauce

vagrant pagoda
#

Making thin Ti parts is easy if you can hydroform it

astral haven
#

yes but cf is significantly more rigid then any metal of the same geometry

vagrant pagoda
#

TI and stainless both hydroform easily

astral haven
#

fam

#

hydroforming isnt cheap still

#

and ti is especially uncheap

astral haven
#

cf comes by default as super thin sheets

vagrant pagoda
#

Yeah sheets

#

You have to heat press CF. And it's extremely abrasive

astral haven
#

what

vagrant pagoda
#

Which means the molds don't last long if the geometry is complex

astral haven
#

since when?

vagrant pagoda
#

How do you think mass produced CF parts are made?

astral haven
#

by layering?

#

well i know there are multiple types of cf parts

#

but im talking about tiny parts like mice

vagrant pagoda
#

Yes you layer the bare cf

astral haven
#

directly into the mold

vagrant pagoda
#

Production level CF is heat cure epoxies in a press

astral haven
#

its an extremely labor intensive process but you can process it a sheet at a time so its worth for smaller parts

vagrant pagoda
#

Wet laying and vacuum curing takes ages.

#

And isn't very accurate

#

So you'd have to finish machine the parts

astral haven
#

mold is not equal to press

vagrant pagoda
#

Which is why you heat press

#

Forms the parts exactly in one op

#

It's how cf sheets/rods/tubes are made. As well as anything mass produced.

#

But you need hardens steel molds

#

Hydroforming can be done with steel back plastic molds.

astral haven
#

๐Ÿคท zaunkoenig disagrees

vagrant pagoda
#

Who?

astral haven
#

the makers of the lightest mice

vagrant pagoda
#

And how much is a hand layed cf mouse?

astral haven
#

couple thousand less than me making a hydroformed one would be

vagrant pagoda
#

Lol

#

Commercial hydroformed titanium parts are done with FDM printer plastic molds

#

It's not that much

astral haven
#

still costs alot to order the parts

vagrant pagoda
#

Go look on Alibaba

astral haven
#

yea i dont have the room to store the equipment

#

im talking about ordering it from a fabrication firm

vagrant pagoda
#

I'm not taking equipment

#

I'm talking ordering the shell

#

I bet $10 a unit in 1000 quantity

astral haven
#

yea but $1000 for a single part lel

vagrant pagoda
#

Nah samples aren't that much

#

I was looking at getting some stainless steel control panels made for work a few years ago. I needed only like 40

astral haven
#

yea dont see anything but steel being hydroformed on alibaba

vagrant pagoda
#

And it ended up being cheaper to have them hydroformed in China and shipped than made in us at literally 20:1

vagrant pagoda
astral haven
#

yup

#

its all either hydroformed stuff or $500 per part

#

or its raw materials for cheap

vagrant pagoda
#

Because I found 5 results on the first page advertising titanium sheet metal hydroforming

astral haven
#

im sure its possible but it aint cheap

#

it definetly aint $300 cheap

#

and again you have the old problem of rigidity

#

metals are not as rigid as cf

vagrant pagoda
#

The only thing I see that's near that price is entire bike frames

astral haven
#

at least by weight of solid material

astral haven
#

they wont actually hydroform a part for you for 2 cents

vagrant pagoda
#

Which one has a sample.proce that high?

astral haven
#

the first one that showed an actual hydroformed part in the listing?

vagrant pagoda
#

I only ended up paying like 50 bucks shipped for one sample of a stainless box the size of a shoe box. And that was hydro formed then laser cut.

astral haven
#

why the heck would you hydro form a stainless box?

RT performance is abysmal, sadly

I really like that AMD can actually stand on close or even equal footing with the 4090

4080 is dead though, wtf is that performance

Pretty crazy perf regardless

cursive summit
#

I'll be honest, if the 7900XTX will be anywhere remotely close to 999 GBP, I'd get that instead

#

Difference between 6900XT and 7900XTX is substantial, and they both launched at the same price point

pale sigil
#

I have a 3080

cursive summit
#

Then why are you looking into GPU prices dogekek

#

That'll be enough for another half a decade

pale sigil
#

Curious

#

But also tempted to trade it in

#

For a AMD GPU

#

Just can't justify if that means getting less perf

cursive summit
#

If you somehow trade that 3080 for a 6900XT that's a worth trade

#

It's just a better product imo

#

Now that Nvidia has embraced an Intel's motherboard strategy and literally forsakes its old products

#

DLSS3 won't come to RTX 3000 series for some reason

ashen spindle
#

what

#

how does software that allegedly needs actual hardware parts on the 40 series mean they forsake old products

cursive summit
#

Well, that's sad then

#

Cause FSR3 will be coming to old stuff but not DLSS3

#

So that's unfortunate but hey, sucks to be an Nvidia user

ashen spindle
#

and it also might be really bad

cursive summit
#

At least you can use FSR3 with your 3080 dogekek

#

AMD bad yet it saves the day, probably

ashen spindle
#

I dont even want to use the current dlss 3

cursive summit
#

We'll see next year when that releases

ashen spindle
#

I definitely would not want to use something that would be worse

cursive summit
#

I wouldn't put it beyond AMD to make it better, though

#

They're a capable bunch of engineers

#

Little reminder that AMD made "RTX" like half a year before Nvidia dogekek

ashen spindle
#

nope

cursive summit
#

The little Radeon suite for rendering or something like that got an update with real time raytracing like, months before RTX was announced

cursive summit
#

20 Mar 2018

#

2 years before RTX 3000

#

Obviously ray tracing existed years before that as well

#

But as far as I see, AMD did it first

ashen spindle
#

you uh, do know that the rtx 2000 series was the first rtx card?...

cursive summit
#

Ah yeah that existed

ashen spindle
#

and one car motor being raytraced is something a 1080 can also do

cursive summit
#

September 20, 2018

#

Still months before

ashen spindle
#

it was literally announced the same day as nvidia announced RTX at GDC...

#

volta came out before turing

tropic nacelle
#

Nvidia were working on raytracing for many years, as was AMD.

These solutions are developed many years in advance with lots of forward thinking for the future. AMD didn't just panic add raytracing, they just were further behind and it's r&d.

reef patrol
#

You just don't get it - People see real time stormtrooper raytracing and their wallets spontanously spurt out vbucks.

cursive summit
#

The part that boggles me the most is why AMD's gpufort is so much worse than CUDA

#

They have been competing for years

ashen spindle
#

they have less money less people and less time spent on it

tropic nacelle
#

Doesn't really matter who was "first", you compare the products to what's available.

Nvidia raytracing performance is better on a similar product placement, AMD rasterization is actually faster at the same point.

If you want the best ray tracing performance today get Nvidia 4090 else get AMD really as it's cheaper and faster in raster for normal games

reef patrol
#

I remember how Canucks looked at ... was it BF1 and were... not very impressed by the performance on gen 1 ๐Ÿ˜„

ashen spindle
#

how is it boggling that it is less good

tropic nacelle
# cursive summit The part that boggles me the most is why AMD's gpufort is so much worse than CUD...

Money, NVIDIA is the big player and people stick to the market leader for compatibility and since Nvidia has more money it feeds an infinite loop.

AMD needs to leapfrog performance to gain marketshare on a smaller budget without their name to lead market uptake.

It's a difficult challenge and one that won't ever change for a long time really. It's why they put so much effort into open source solutions as that's the best way to get people to pick it up regardless of their product, it's necessity for them

pale sigil

seems like bose solo is cheap but I guess it wouldn't be so good - back to youtube videos it seems

cursive summit
#

You need specifically a sound bar or speaker set?

vocal cipher
#

soundbar fits better to my case rn

cursive summit

Idk what's much better than that Bose one

#

Seems to fit your 200$ max range

#

Hit up used market though, it'd be hard to insert something genuinely good and brand new into that price range

sharp badger
#

I've got a soundbar and for listening&watching music/movies it's good enough

cursive summit
#

With used you can typically shave off like what, half off of most stuff?

#

400$ bar is defo good, try finding some of those on the used market

That's a bit weird

@thick elk hit me up, I can pull something from my local used market and send them over your way dogekek

I have no clue what delivery company will ship a fuckin meter sized speaker set though

singapore seems to be the best place for a lot of hobbyist

they got dedicated audiophile and keyboard stores

frozen ingot

there's definitely a use for wireless imo, but clearly there's a shortage of places where you can properly demo more "audiophile" type headphones

cursive summit
#

We have maybe a single audiophile store, and it's not very good

frozen ingot
#

I hate using that word though because audiophiles are predominantly idiotshavo

cursive summit

That's where I went to try out the hifimans

#

I heard good good things about those

gusty kiln

yeah

#

as long as you don't listen too loud

cursive summit

My listening is about ~60db

gusty kiln
#

should be fine

cursive summit
#

just below the ear damage range

gusty kiln
#

some crazy people manage to clip the clears

#

might be faulty but who knows

cursive summit
#

Which is weird cause for me 65-ish dbA is actually quite loud

#

If >70 dbA causes hearing damage from prolonged usage, it makes me think that living is dangerous dogekek

fair gull
#

all about the bass? no treble?

shadow minnow
#

I doubt itโ€™s > 70, my phone says environment sound level is usually 68dB for me

final flame
#

considering it's logarithmic 70db would probably be like 250 hours in 7 days

astral haven
#

think more like 400 hours which follows the scale all the way back to 110db

#

but there arent that many hours in 7 days lel

#

there arent even 200 hours in 7 days

final flame
#

yea and considering how your own usage patterns are I doubt many people would hit 40 hours

astral haven
#

also music isnt -0db often

final flame
#

I mean garbage music is

astral haven
#

most music is -3 or -6db peak with averages set to -6 and -9 respectively

final flame
#

my general rule of thumb is, if it's above 80db turn is down

#

it also helps to just not listen to a lot of music throughout the day, and having a quiet room always will allow you to turn it down withput any compromise

astral haven
#

ah but how are you measuring the db...

final flame
#

can't afford a db recording device so I just use a app on my phone

#

put the mic right next to the driver as close as possible

astral haven
#

some phones have noise normalized mics

final flame
#

inaccurate but yea

#

usually I only take the peak db to compensate for that

astral haven
#

yea thats generally even worse tbh

#

my actual noise level meter is often 10+db higher or lower depending on the situation

final flame
#

its better to take a louder result than reality than a lower one

astral haven
#

the problem is it has +-10db of error lel

final flame
#

I'll eventually get a 711 to measure my iems and a actual db meter for everything else, but for now this is all I have

astral haven
#
  • or -
thick elk
#

I am unsure what volume I usually listen to but it certainly is no 80db.
Some random sound measuring app got me peeking around 55db which seems plausible

cursive summit
#

Quick google search says that noise over 70db might cause damage over prolonged period of time

#

I'm not sure how scientific my measurement was, but I just stuck my phone microphone into the headphone earcup and measured the decibels that are coming out with my typical volume preset dogekek

#

Said it's about 65

stark bobcat
#

I love when I hear ppl talk about db and distance is not part of the conversation

thick elk
#

I should have stated that I put the mic side of my phone all the way in the cup of my headphone. But yea distance is insanely important

wheat plume

wheat plume

thick elk

For a lot of commercial uses, pi's are still cost-effective at this price.

cursive summit

104 euros basically

#

That's alright?

empty wren
cursive summit

Tf can a Pi even do

empty wren

A ton

cursive summit

Like, is it capable of media playback?

YouTube basically

empty wren

You can use it for Kodi or Plex yes

gusty kiln

seen a lot of people use it for a NAS

wheat plume

How tf are Pi Pico's only 4 euro

cursive summit

So it's not that shit when it comes to graphical output

wheat plume
#

How they making them this cheap?

cursive summit

Definitely not that

gusty kiln

home automation too

cursive summit

empty wren

empty wren

empty wren

Skyrim is mods anyways

I can prolly do a full rig of ancient 2010s PC parts

no sticker on the router?

ashen spindle

or put an open source router OS on it lel

cursive summit

ashen spindle

ISP's own webpage has a control panel

gusty kiln

what country is this

It's really limited, more like just devices that are active and some basic settings

But yeah that's as much as I can control this damn router

Which is funny cause I told them they can have it

#

I had my own Wifi6 one

So use your own anyway what they gonna do about it

cursive summit

I'm guessing literally spyware

Fuck off where you came from linux fools

Windows represents 90% of the market and for a good reason

wheat plume

good reason
its what people are used to, doesnt mean its the best

cursive summit

If Linux was good it'd have more adoption

wheat plume
#

nope

cursive summit
#

Last I checked, it wasn't good

frozen ingot
#

windows privacy sucks yep

wheat plume
#

People dont want to learn a new OS, thats the main reason

frozen ingot
#

but linux isn't really an option

cursive summit
#

Installing stuff? Updating stuff? Navigating your OS

#

Windows made it simple af

#

Linux is so damn complicated for no damn reason

wheat plume
frozen ingot
#

I'm more computer savvy than most normies and I have constant headaches and problems with linux having to spend lengthy periods of time googling around and doing trial and error hoping I'll find a working solution

wheat plume
#

windows has winget now, which is amazing

cursive summit
#

Except that you have to also install shit through the terminal with Linux

wheat plume
#

but its not well stocked

cursive summit

That's a massive ass blunder on Linux's part

frozen ingot

wheat plume
#

cursive summit
#

Programmers and other peeps will use powershell

frozen ingot

Normal user will never in their life learn that powershell even exists

#

Hell even CMD

wheat plume
frozen ingot
#

if you just want to browse the internet, linux isn't too difficult

wheat plume
#

^

frozen ingot
#

the thing is they'll have headaches as soon as they want to do anything outside of internet cafรฉ stuff

cursive summit
#

I can get by with using Linux, but fuck me I spend half of my time troubleshooting why something isn't working than actually working

frozen ingot
#

like installing ms office

wheat plume
#

any distro I tried just worked on my PC

frozen ingot
#

libreoffice or gimp isn't really an option

cursive summit
#

Anyways that's why I have completely replaced my Linux mint with this bad boy

cursive summit

cursive summit
frozen ingot

cursive summit

#

Good thing to do

#

Superlight is amazing though

frozen ingot

I put up with libreoffice because I didn't want to get ms office license for our company

wheat plume

id never trust a third party windows modification

cursive summit

Last time I remember my Windows utilizing 2GB of RAM was.. Windows 7 with no background tasks running

Windows 11 superlight out of the box has like 1.5GB of RAM usage

frozen ingot
#

I hate quite a few things about microsoft, they're far from perfect

cursive summit

That's Windows 7 levels

#

Man I loved Win7

frozen ingot

but windows still the best compromise for everything to work for most users

wheat plume
fair gull
cursive summit
frozen ingot
#

maybe, I hate macos file system though

true but it just works

wheat plume

fair gull

except the initial setup which i somehow got to hardcrash macos it just works

fair gull

like it way way more than windows

i have the opposite experience

#

my win pc is great for gaming and such

#

but everything else is just better since i got a macbook for work

frozen ingot
#

depends on what type of productivity imo

fair gull
#

i had no issues with music/audio, video and programming

frozen ingot
#

I mostly used my mac for audio work

#

they're still objectively better at that sort of thing

fair gull

also have to clarify i only have experience with m1

#

cant speak for the older macs

frozen ingot

yeah mine was a core2duo one from like 2010 dogekek

fair gull

fair gull

like i hate apple but i would always go for a macbook again for work

frozen ingot

Nah, Apple silicon is the best thing Apple has released in many many years

frozen ingot

they actually make newer apple machines pretty decent value

fair gull
#

while i could play final fantasy 14 on my mbp it doesnt get close to my pc

#

26fps compared to 300smth odd is just worlds

frozen ingot

I'm fine with having an apple laptop for audio/work etc too but I wouldn't even consider it for a desktop

fair gull

same issue

#

ya

#

the native mac launcher by third party even translates the directx to vulkan quiet well

#

but i think the game is just too heavy to not run native

#

i can see a native port of the entire game actually working out

#

i dont mind

#

id say they should do what they do best

wheat plume

Funny..MacOS started out as the best gaming platform when both mac and Windows were new
