Wow so Fable might be recovered eventually.

fringe salmon
#

Yeah but then it’s not as impressive as this run and then it’s not looking as if it’s much more skill than a cs player

unborn spruce
#

Mudda, best TM player ever, had to spend 800 hours doing this before he got it. The sheer skill required to ace Deep Fear is insane and puts damn near everything ever done in CS to utter shame.

fringe salmon
#

Again that is a completely different stillest though

unborn spruce
#

Never mind ace Deep Fear. Bro had to ace an optimised run since a pure ace is around 15 minutes.

#

He was having to inject speed slides in any place possible.

fringe salmon
#

Like you can’t say TM has adjustment and then continue the example where there are none xD

unborn spruce
#

Especially the last checkpoint which was causing problems since he was often too fast. 714 speed and you crash, 712 and you don’t make it.

unborn spruce
#

That’s what makes them such a brutal grind and skill check.

deft bloom
#

this is impossible to follow to anyone who hasn't played the game, lol

unborn spruce
#

Ikr.

fringe salmon
#

Yeah but in a map like this the skillset is so different from CS you can’t say it shits on CS comp play skill

unborn spruce
#

If you’ve touched TMNF ever you immediately have worlds of respect for anyone that can ace Deep Fear much less do it in less than 10 minutes.

deft bloom
#

you could literally type anything and people would still have no idea what the fuck you are on about

unborn spruce
#

Freakish skill.

unborn spruce
fringe salmon
#

Yeah which is just wrong lol

unborn spruce
#

Again I really don’t think there’s another game that quite enforces perfectionism like TM does. Very good players naturally, but not sheer perfectionism.

#

Not when a single track takes nearly a thousand hours.

fringe salmon
#

Like you can’t have perfectionism in csgo because you can’t train for hours what the enemy does because you never know

#

You can have the best setups but there will always be eng from humans opposing you

deft bloom
#

can they even do it live? what's the point if they can just grind until they get it right one run

deft bloom
#

a better comparison would be like KZ in csgo

unborn spruce
#

Lots of lobbies get hosted by FTW for like mass skip and speedrun grinding.

#

And a lot of streamers like Mudda, well they stream.

deft bloom
unborn spruce
fringe salmon
#

So like the top csgo teams don’t exist or what

#

Like grind for cs also means you are interacting with teammates to get a good talk going, be fit due to lots of travel and all

deft bloom
#

how is team vs team rng now?

unborn spruce
#

The top CS teams in no possible way going to be competing with FTW if you’re talking determination. FTW is built way different.

fringe salmon
#

You can grind TM for 30k in your basement and suddenly have the best time you can’t grind that in cs

unborn spruce
#

Filtered best of the best players in human history for TM that routinely organise groups to hunt records. The equivalent is getting every best player from every best CS team and grouping them.

unborn spruce
fringe salmon
#

That it’s BS saying csgo players don’t grind as much just because they might have 100 hours gameplay less

unborn spruce
#

Right so google failed.

#

Going by quick maths we can roughly estimate a lower and upper bound for Mudda. His lower bound hours are in the range of 29k assuming everything he does takes 120 hours, his upper bound is nearish 55k hours.

#

Depends on the average. It’d take AGES to math it properly.

deft bloom
unborn spruce
#

Idk. Mudda does a lot of fullspeed stuff and those are usually quick to finish with brutally tight timings, but the records take forever.

fringe salmon
#

Over how many years

unborn spruce
#

Grinding out a really complex map might take a few hundred hours or so.

unborn spruce
# fringe salmon Over how many years

Well he’s 25 rn and he’s been playing TM since the dawn of when he could be a legit human that isn’t basically a flesh mass. Idk the exact date when he started but young.

deft bloom
#

that'd be 6 years in-game. when did he start playing?

unborn spruce
#

Best answer I can find is as a kid.

deft bloom
#

and there's only 24 hours a day, if he grinds 12 hours a day that'd take already 12 years

#

press x to doubt

unborn spruce
#

Going a bit further over his history is odd.

#

He doesn’t play anything else. THONK

#

Like anything.

#

First actual tourney was 2015, as far as I can tell he was competing near FWO levels during 2012~ from logs over at TrackmaniaExchange.

#

This has hbox vibes.

fringe salmon
#

Simple has 7354 hours in the last two years and 6 months

deft bloom
#

maybe ask him on twitter or something if you're interested, your estimations aren't in the physical realm either way dogekek

unborn spruce
#

Hence lower and upper bound. I averaged his WR grind time and multiplied it by his total WRs.

#

Threw some healthy +- in to be safe.

#

Like not everything he does is going to be Deep Fear.

#

I mean he point blank told everyone he’s perma uninstalling TMNF because of Deep Fear. KEKW
Can’t blame the guy.

deft bloom
#

understandable

unborn spruce
#

Worth it tho. Like D-12 Speed might be broken, but nah no way is Deep Fear getting broken.

#

That’s more than likely what that record is going to remain forever. Or at least for a turbo long time since I’m sure nobody wants to challenge a 2 year grind with the peak of TM speed comp at his peak for 2 years.

#

Maybe tho. Like E-04 got broken after what? 14 years of record? That got broken by pure RNG and the grind was like 8 months since it was around 21,600 attempts. Maybe someone comes back to Deep Fear in a decade or two when it's the most prestigious record in the game history.

fringe salmon

On doing even more investigating, I have come to the conclusion that it is vestigial side effects of part of an editor tool that wasn't supposed to be in the game

This is some old school Warcraft design.

small comet

well its not bad to write some small info to the reg

#

has its upsides like cross install configuration

#

even if you reinstall the game completely the few settings remain in reg

#

the only major downside is portability and size of data saved

#

should keep it to small bits of data in reg and cant just cache your shaders there

solar lily
#

Yes they replaced CS:GO with CS2

fading spade
#

oh, wow

bet esports arent happy with that choice

solar lily

we were discussing the implications of that in terms of workshop map preservation two days ago

fading spade

is it backwards compatible with workshop stuff??

solar lily
fading spade

ooh

solar lily
feral ferry
#

Cause 128 tick matchmaking is completely gone

solar lily
#

128 tick matchmaking was only external

feral ferry
#

Everyone is forced to play on 64 so people WILL now blame major esports incidents on tickrae

feral ferry
#

They completely canned 128tick

solar lily
#

How have they managed that?

feral ferry
#

Cause they disabled the ability to modify tickrate

#

Absolutely everyone will be confined to 64

#

Which is bs

solar lily
#

Like with no recourse? CS2 engine has been set to not have the serverside tickrate commands work anymore?

feral ferry
#

Yes

fading spade
#

how large was CSGO?
Cause CSGO2 wants 34GB

feral ferry
fading spade
#

dont remember CSGO being that large

#

oh LOL

solar lily
#

It's not something people can make a serverside mod/plugin out of and bypass commands being disabled?

feral ferry
#

I hope they figure that out

#

But Valve doesn't want that to happen

solar lily
#

I don't exactly know why downloading CS:GO manually through steamcmd is taking so much space

fading spade
#

csgo2

solar lily
#

Well maybe if the world's hardware choices gets to the point where CS2 starts universally performing well enough then Valve can bite the bullet on forcing 128 tickrate onto everyone's CPUs /s

I'm a bit surprised though because I assumed Source 2 would fix the everso-Sorse problem of being CPU-limited but I'm not sure if the CS2 performance is entirely on the back of being GPU-limited

feral ferry
#

I think it was this

#

Seems like CS2 hardcoded the tickrate in the client binary, so even if server binary is patched (they got rid of GetTickInterval function which made this easy), it shouldn't matter.

Valve should be improving stuff that is subpar, rather than bruteforcing it with 128 tick.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqhhFl5zgA0 keep in mind tickrate also works differently

Tick rate no longer matters for moving, shooting, or throwing.

Sub-tick updates are the heart of Counter-Strike 2. Previously, the server only evaluated the world in discrete time intervals (called ticks). Thanks to Counter-Strike 2’s sub-tick update architecture, servers know the exact instant that motion starts, a shot is fired, or a ā€˜nade i...

tickrate itself works differently or there is something to the side of tickrate that allows subtick actions?

feral ferry

Valve just really wants for people to be contempt with 64

what convars would they make for subtick šŸ¤”

128 should just be the normal tickrate

Subtick could improve 128 as well

tough jay

If I get this correctly, the tickrate stays the same but the game now includes more accurate timestamps to work with?

solar lily
#

especially given the performance drop to CS2

tough jay
#

Seems to me the biggest hurdles with a higher tickerate are not how fast people's pc's are but rather network connection and server cost.

solar lily
#

you say it's a hurdle like Valve doesn't have the finances to step over it like the giant they are

#

network connection argument though?

feral ferry
#

Let's go back to the days when people host servers on their own computers mm

solar lily
#

instructions unclear, switched to P2P

#

does a significant/relevant amount of people actually do that though these days? Most of the time people rent from server providers themselves - yes with a good amount of remote access to file directories but still not from their own computers

green dune

Would it be possible to disable some CPU cores on the Steam Deck to give more power to the remaining ones?

HARdware Threads.

fringe salmon

its a single chip threads switching around isnt doing much

solar lily

Apparently 'hart' (lowercase) is something you pick up reading the RISC-V specification...

unborn spruce
#

It just feels really wacky at first.

green dune
#

It's useful.

solar lily
#

Yeah just don't confuse it with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hart_(deer)

A hart is a male red deer, synonymous with stag and used in contrast to the female hind; its use may now be considered mostly poetic or archaic. The word comes from Middle English hert, from Old English heorot; compare Frisian hart, Dutch hert, German Hirsch, and Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish hjort, all meaning "deer". Heorot is given as the na...

fringe salmon
#

isnt that just a core

green dune
#

Nah.

#

Most CPU cores now have two harts.

fringe salmon
#

. Hardware threads look like separate compute cores to the operating system, but they will time-share on the same physical core.
ok so its just their word for SMT

unborn spruce
#

I mean yeh obviously. Hardware Threads could only mean so many things.

green dune
#

Not exactly.

#

Anyway.

#

I want to get Xenoblade Chronicles 2 running well.

#

Just slapping it on the Deck it doesn't run too well.

fringe salmon
#

disable SMT but doing more wont increase it likely

green dune
#

I wonder if there's a tool for showing SoC stats.

green dune
#

The usage of each enabled thread, GPU usage, memory usage, limiting factors (I.E. power, demand, temperature), stuff like that.

unborn spruce
#

@bleak pike Cataphract does 165k DPS with Spike/Envious/Bait, you can overflow 17 grenades into the mag. Currently by FAR the strongest DPS in the meta.

#

Run like Witherhoard/Sniper/Cataphract with Gathering Storm/Pulse and you can push something around 7m total damage in Crota. Only gets beaten by 4th Horseman Arc Hunter.

#

Best thing? Currently the adept in Trials so farm the fuck out of one. yeet

green dune
#

Also tangentially related: where's a good place to get more info on the software stack on the Steam Deck? I want to try to add some stuff to the UI and have some more direct hardware access.

the ui is closed source

unborn spruce

Reject closed source.

unborn spruce

I mean minecraft has been completely decompiled and reverse engineered.

hot spire

minecraft has had offical mapping files for ages

green dune
#

It's still not open source.

hot spire
#

yeah

green dune
#

I've been in the modding community since alpha.

hot spire
#

but its 80-90% of the work of decompiling

#

also java is way easier to decomplie

unborn spruce
#

I mean it also helps that Notch really didn't bother building MC to be anything resembling a fortress.

hot spire
#

if you are asking here for info on it

hot spire

i know that its outside my skills and where to find everything

so i know my statment is true lol

green dune
#

Hrm, something happened to my XBC2 dump...

#

Why can't I just plug my Switch into my Steam Deck to copy stuff?

#

Might be fun to try to write tools for that...

feral ferry
fringe salmon
#

meh, switch2 isnt very exciting

tough jay
#

I still don't quite know where it will land in the grand scheme of things.
It makes sense that it could get close to steam deck performance, and exceed it in practice due to more directly targeting the hardware.

#

Knowing nintendo it could very well make due with 8gb ram at lower performance which could complicate things.

fringe salmon
#

I just want to laugh and see a strix (halo) device that can emulate switch2 games on release lol

#

also should be 12gb lpddr likely

tough jay
#

could be, but things would have to be clocked lower as Nintendo probably wants to hit a lower power target than the deck.

fringe salmon
#

more curious if it does anything else beside just being a switch with more hardware power

solar lily
fringe salmon
#

yeah basically

tough jay
#

Wii u fucked itself over trying to be backwards compatible and blew it's budget on including that tablet by default.

solar lily
#

Switch 2 could flop hard if it splits their userbase enough without sufficient transitioning

#

"fucked itself over trying to be backwards compatible"
yeah I think people would shit on Nintendo if Switch 2 wasn't
even Sony got the memo

tough jay
#

I mean hardware level back compat instead of emulation.
Those Power PC cores were very outdated

solar lily
#

Then again speaking of Sony they're comitting a Wii U moment too

solar lily
tough jay
#

Still I don't think there was a good answer, the Wii hype was dying and they had to do something to win people over.

solar lily
#

after all no chance of any future Nintendo console being backwards compatible with the Wii family

#

they at some point would've cut off that loose end, they just put themselves in a financial state holding it off

#

Do we have any leaks on what architecture 'Switch 2' would be on?
Probably wouldn't move off ARM but that would be the same 'backwards compatibility messy shit' if they did

tough jay
#

Translation layers could work, but more importantly I see no reason to move away from ARM.
At the very most move away from Nvidia if they are not cooporating but arm is perfectly fine for what they are doing.

fringe salmon
#

just another nvidia chip just with never cores for cpu and gpu

#

still on not current gen ofc though

tough jay
#

This seems pretty established yea if that were false someone would have leaked it by now.

#

Just saying blank slate ignoring rumors looking at the current landscape for the power envelope they are targeting ARM cores make the msot sense right now. Unless you get AMD to make something on zen's lower power cores to fit.

solar lily
#

yeah maybe they don't 'beat' the Steam Deck at the exact same game

green dune
#

A Switch 2 is going to be disappointing to a lot of people, the backwards comparability is likely to be complicated because of poor Horizon design decisions.

solar lily
green dune
#

The Wii U is amazing.

solar lily
#

Yeah well the customer is always right
and Nintendo didn't convince the customer that they would think buying a Wii U is the right decision
hence poor sales, 'if our next console flops as well we'll pull out of that segment of the market'

green dune
#

My mom still thinks it's a fancy Wii controller.

#

The gamepad though. šŸ˜

tough jay
#

One problem the Wii-u faced was simply costs, that tablet had a real hardware cost and when you try to make a lower priced console.
The tablet is going to get a cheap resistive screen, the hardware specs are going to suffer.
It just feels like a flawed concept

solar lily
#

Yeah well at least your mum wouldn't be wrong in thinking the PlayStation Portal is 'a fancy PS controller'

tough jay
#

Actually got my psp-go from someone who used it as such.

solar lily
tough jay
#

The problem was not having a tablet per se, but rather having both a full console and a tablet bundled like that.

#

The switch dock much cheaper / simpler.

green dune
#

Yeah but far less useful.

#

I feel like the Wii U with an ethernet cable and better marketing (I.E. not calling it the Wii U) would have gone a long way.

solar lily
#

So it's cheaper because otherwise you have a tablet needing processing units and console needing processing units
while Switch you either carry the processing units with you or leave it in the dock šŸ¤”

green dune
#

Yeah but you don't get both.

tough jay
#

I feel like the best case for the wii-u would have been to ditch the powerpc cores for something more modern, increase the budget so the tablet got a better screen and the console got stronger hardware. And sold a budget version without the tablet.
And also give it a better name.

green dune
#

The gamepad didn't need to be quite as complex as it ended up either, but hey.

solar lily
green dune
#

They wanted Wii compatibility.

tough jay
#

Which was a mistake because A everyone had a wii and B wii's were dirt cheap.

#

and C the input method was completely different anyway

#

The cpu architecture was derived from the gamecube's cpu just with some more cache and clockspeed and 3 cores

solar lily
#

Ah and I don't even think Wii U had GC backwards compatibility

#

hell later Wii models didn't either

tough jay
#

They could probably have done that, the compatibility removal was mostly just controller ports and memory card slots

#

If they remapped those calls to store the games on nand or made some usb-adapter the wii-u could have been backwards compatibile with the gamecube

#

In fact there is homebrew that does that

solar lily
#

I'm trying to think if that means you could hardmod these Wii models then

tough jay
#

Ah I see where the compatibility broke, the disc drive, so the games would work without emulation, just the disc drive could not read them.

#
solar lily
#

Hardmod old Wii drives into later models šŸ¤”

orchid prism
green dune
#

You can run GC stuff on the Wii U!

#

The new drives are SATA the Wii drives are custom.

green dune
#

The Wii U dev units could use two gamepads, imagine if any games got to use that! Stuff like Yu-Gi-Oh! would be a really cool use case.

solar lily
#

Yeah, that's a consideration I would have never made on my own and I feel there'd be a lot more opportunities for unique content if you could do that with connecting multiple gamepads to a single console

green dune
#

The hardware was there, just no support in the OS.

solar lily
#

Maybe very much more in the sense of 'carrying your Wii U tablet over to your friends' rather than 'buy multiple tablets to access things' though

green dune
#

Yeah exactly.

#

Like the Wii.

#

They could have put more storage on the Gamepad for characters and stuff, more like the Dreamcast.

tough jay
#

Even besides that, game devs would have to actually implement the feature. And I don't think many of them would.

green dune
#

Especially since a lot of games essentially ignored it.

#

Nintendo Land and Splatoon are like the best games for the Wii U....

#

Another fun thing, the Gamepad had its own sensor bar. So you could track Wiimotes from two gamepads and a TV.

tough jay
#

You could probably track wii-motes with two tv remotes taping down a button.

#

the sensor bar was not much more than a bunch of ir leds

green dune
#

Yeah, but the Gamepad still had them.

#

The TV remotes probably wouldn't work though.

#

You can use candles.

tough jay
#

I personally think the style of controllers was fine on a home console, just needed a bit more refinement and a bit less stupid gimicky use.

green dune
tough jay
#

an air mouse just is a rather nice way to control a lot of first person games and hte like

solar lily
green dune
#

I guess you could also do something like the Guitar Hero games ended up doing.

#

Splatoon on the Wii U feels amazing.

solar lily
#

I have to say I do not know why Microsoft allowed themselves to be overtaken in controller design when they have xinput to maintain

tough jay
#

I personally own wii motes, a ps-move and even a razer hydra (interesting piece of kit I got it on the cheap)

green dune
#

I wish VR stuff could be used for that Portal DLC.

solar lily
tough jay
#

I got the hydra on the cheap. Also got a copy of dirt 3 and dark souls 1 with it because the packaging was damaged

#

quite a nice deal for less than € 50

green dune
#

Can I just cat the split roms to merge them?

tough jay
#

I played the dlc, it was insanely broken

#

Or rather you can also create portals like that in coop and the base game

#

Also Razer was not really involved with it at all other than branding

green dune
#

I wonder if they were working on VR stuff then, I know this was the "correct" way to do input with the DK1.

tough jay
#

It really predated vr.

#

They mostly focussed on playing pc games from the couch. If steam machines took off that would have been a market they would target.

#

Their software was quite decent with mapping and such. A bit like steam input works now

#

I am still glad I own one, even if I don't use it, it's a nice bit of history.

#

I did actually use it in some games as it was a fun way to control them until I got a steam controller and used that instead if I wanted to mess with these things.

green dune
#

I always liked the idea of those but they are impractical.

solar lily
#

wow I always wondered how I'd go back to 'family sitting on the sofa playing with laptops' when everything in our lives became about the modular desktop computer

green dune
#

I kinda want wireless USB for my keyboard for couch use.

#

Well I'm kinda getting 30FPS.

green dune
#

It can't hold it even at a reduced resolution and there are a bunch of graphical issues.

fading spade
#

It would be so nice to have access to your main PC from your TV screen in the sitting room

And have a wireless keyboard and mouse to connect to it
Or a controller for games

green dune
#

Steam Link?

#

It can forward USB devices too.

fading spade

The software can?

green dune
#

Yeah.

#

You can plug a USB device into the Steam Link and forward it to your PC.

Divinity 2 had a real storytelling problem.

if I dont know its a cheat or a sick player its different from knowing they aim at you behind walls all the time

static island

dunno how big and accessible it is for your usual cheater

fringe salmon

fading spade
hot spire

static island
#

what about when the game updates

hot spire
#

you still need a sub to cheats

static island
#

ah okay makes sense

hot spire
#

the hardware stays the same though

#

the hardware is a fpga hooked to pcie or usb-pcie that reads the host memory

#

the second computer connects to that device over usb

#

and dose all the cheat stuff

#

you then have a hdmi merger that overlays the second pc display over the first

#

you can also use the DMA to feed back mouse input to windows

static island

thats fire

so its not really dectectable at this point

the only ones had device ids for access

now they use a dma method that dosent have any device exposed to the host

static island
hot spire

the old ones that had device ids did

Afaik the "mob vote" mobs are literally pre-made for the show

So they are just scrapping development time of the contestants that don't win

Why not give us concept art and let us vote on something actually big, like a new realm to visit

Saponification is an event that occurs after death in which a body undergoes chemical changes that transform body fat into a substance called adipocere. Adipocere is a byproduct of decomposition. It is an organic material, with the consistency of semi-hard cheese and a soapy, waxy texture.

We're benchmarking a ton of GPUs in Baldur's Gate 3, the smash hit from Larian. Although the game is overall highly playable on most cards of the last 5+ years, it serves as an interesting test candidate for GPU Busy. It's also so wildly popular that we want to integrate it into ...

Isn't GN benchmarking games since not long ago? 2-3 weeks I think
Plus they want to be as accurate as possible given LTT drama last month

GN spent months on the ROG Ally video

#

They were wildly late but that's just cause how in-depth they were

I... feel conflicted cause they miss the prime time for such videos

But their in-depth nature is best in class

The deck is amazing

unborn spruce
# bleak pike Who doesn't

Me tbh. Deck was good but that was in absence of anything good. Yeah deck is great compared to the competition. (What competition)

#

Doesn’t really change that it’s an eh handheld when the Legion exists.

#

I try to avoid calling the first halfway decent thing great because it almost never is and something immediately comes out better. See Legion Go.

bleak pike
#

Legion sucks in many ways though

unborn spruce
#

I mean how so? All of the spec so far is great, it’s just expensive.

#

It’s literally just the Ally with the shit parts fixed.

feral ferry
#

Legion Go I think it's called, is the best handheld that exists right now

hardy merlin
#

Specs may be greater, but battery life and low-energy efficiency suffer heavily

bleak pike
#

Oh I got mixed up actually

unborn spruce
#

I mean how so? Thanks to it being able to do integer scaling which the Deck can’t do it gets about as much saving as the Deck does.

#

Legit it’s straight up the best handheld bar none.

bleak pike
#

But one thing I dislike about these alternative handhelds is the lack of track pad

unborn spruce
#

Eh? Legion has an integrated mouse.

#

Screw trackpad.

bleak pike
#

How dare you say that about the god tier ones on the deck

#

Another thing is not using steam os

feral ferry
#

SteamOS ew

unborn spruce
#

Honestly? Good. SteamOS being locked to the Deck intrinsically makes it F tier.

#

F tier bad OS.

#

Not good for this industry.

bleak pike
#

I don't disagree tbh, though it's technically not, but officially yes.

unborn spruce
#

Let new competition thrive like nuts I say. Fuck the Steam Deck. Cheap shit that gives you cheap shit. We can all do better.

bleak pike
#

I do wish steam would hurry up in releasing it like they said a long time ago.
