2. it can corrode, but only if its exposed to a ton of moisture for a while, and its not like youre taking your keyboard swimming.
3. the outside paint/whatever they color it with probably protects from that

Like I said - "Rust" (or rather oxidation) is not exclusive to iron.

Zinc grows a hard, whiteish surface if exposed to air over a period of time. So don't scrape off that paint.
