I just find it useful because I have both english speaking friends and Japanese speaking friends and I prefer to text in Hiragana...a kanji keyboard would be cursed.

the reason you wouldn't technically say that the romaji is spelled the way it's said is because of the accent.

a lot of people will take the whole "Romaji is it's literal spelling" shtick and run with it and completely forget that there's accentuation.

like a french person seeing Hey and saying Ey because H is silent in their accent.
