You have ideas and thoughts, but then as you see them interact and you see people's responses, that changes your ideas toward that character and how they would work with your main character. I think that's basically what he was saying. Kid's the kind of hot-head rival archetype in many a series, and he thought that would work going forward, but he realized later that it didn't fit what he wanted
