It seems like Gin had an experience on the Grand Line that traumatized him, and the line "I can't believe the mother ship is in this state" is implying something happened to them out there that wrecked their ship. I think the Krieg crew are going to be used as hype tools for the real villain of this arc which is the person that crippled them, which would be really cool.||

do what you prefer, there's no definite better one. the manga is better if you want to get it done quickly while the anime is great for visualizing what's happening, has an amazing soundtrack, and has a fan edit to have the only real plus of the manga (pacing) in anime format known as one pace
