I didnt really care when jasna died, mentor dying too soon forcing the protégé to continue on is a pretty common trope. I also didnt care that much when I was expecting daliniar to die for the first two books. At that point i understood him as like an old honorable ideal who would inspire the next generation to live up to his standard. ||
|| But Elokhar is a man who has no great legacy to inspire others. He had only recently realized he was bad and needed to change. But he was doing it. He was becoming good, thats what him personally going to the city was about. The day of his death was the most heroic and notable day of his life and its not even close. The same theme plays out with daliniar as he resists odium's influence, he admits his guilt as a prerequistie for his willingness to change and concludes that the only step that matters is the next step. And for elokhar to have died at the very beginning of a similar path is a deep tragedy ||
|| the fact that hes cut down due to kaladin's hesitation furthers the tragedy. Kaladin was the heroic ideal that inspired him to change. And he was doing everything right as good as could be expected from that moment on but his heroic ideal failed him through no fault of his own ||

I think the performances were good and it was shot pretty well

The ritual ||I liked the first half of the movie quite a lot. The creature design is also unique and I like how it’s on screen a lot of times but you only notice it when it starts moving.

The second half was kinda random though. Can’t really put my finger on exactly what I disliked about it, there’s a few things but it mostly boils down to how they had to find a way to defeat this immortal god and this is the best they could do.

Horror movies do this quite a lot where they just nerf the demonic entities when it’s their turn to lose. Maybe I should read the novel but it felt like there might’ve been some holes in the adaptation. Like the wooden figure on the chair, and the “corpse” room in the final area.||

Nevernight early still ||Finally made it to the very entrance of the Red Church after escaping the sand krakens. I do enjoy reading Mia's backstory at the beginning of each chapter. The early chapters were especially unique in that Kristoff had both the past and present mirror each other with how he chose his words. Very cool and clever. Project Hail Mary ||Now that I've had the week to settle my thoughts on it it didn't really like, wow me? Because it's kinda a greatest hits of the best of the last ~10 years of sci-fi and as a scifi nerd I've basically seen a lot of these beats before

But that's not a bad thing, it took those ideas, wove them together believably and used em for an excellent family movie that's just as funny and endearing as it is tense and grandiose. It just meant it didn't hit the highs of something more bold like Arrival or The Martian to me.

This is all kinda underhanded praise lol. Its like an 8.5/10 for me even tho I think it's perfectly executed for what it was trying to be, and I've been trying to figure out why that is.||
