Star Wars episodes 7-9 question, spoilers everything ||Was there ever any hints at an enemies to lovers arc between Rey and Kylo in episodes 7 and 8? I'm not talking simply them being opposed to each other, but rather actual subtext, visual cues, etc.? I know in episodes 8 they seemed to have some mental connections of sorts and his whole shirt being off meme. But I also remember feeling slapped in the face when they kissed at the end of episode 9. OBAA ||my point was less that it was unfaithful to the novel and more that it missed the entire point of it - that there was a legitimate political fervor and worldliness to the 60s movements that was drained by the vestiges of the system that everyone had latent within them, in addition to the government’s overreaching policies that existed both as countermeasures and just incidental consequences of business. ||

||Instead, the film creates a fake universe where the perceived foil to the system, the counterculture of our times, is breaking illegal immigrants out of camps, blowing up ballot offices, and shutting down some city’s power grid. And the basis of these actions is a sort of nebulous “yeah fuck the imperialists”, but it’s not elaborated on, it’s just kind of played off as a joke the entire time. And what I specifically mean is that the bulk of the political energy is framed through this stupid hypersexuality that ascribes the movement to a collection of feelings barely strung together by anti-government slogan logic. Under this assumption, ideology is just anger at perceived injustices, and even if the leftists have the more sympathetic cause, they’re ultimately being framed opposite the ridiculous racist caricature as some sort of analogous notion simply shifted through environment. ||

||Which is another thing the movie misappropriated from the novel - that the antagonists are so absurdly evil. It had to be the case for PTA’s silly story because of this aforementioned energy but it neuters the political messaging by tying the crushing of the movement to a set of individuals and ideals that don’t exist in the slightest, removed from the context those ideals form IRL and made crude comedic elements. ||

||So this leads us to three places: ||
||-that these adventurous leftist movements were doomed from the start and purely just emotional outlets for angst. ||
||-that all that really matters is your immediate family.||
||-that the future of political fervor in America is going out and protesting ice raids.||

||So I don’t think this is a film about the systems in place in America right now, it’s a film appealing to your average moviegoer’s liberal sensibilities and their intuition towards what in the system needs to be fixed. “We need to remove the racists in power who are sticking immigrants in camps”, as an ideology. The actual questions:||
||-Why does this continue under liberal presidents? ||
||-Why has there not been a meaningful leftist political movement since the 70s? ||
||-Far beyond placing immigrants in camps, what level of global suffering is permissible to maintain the qualities of lives of Americans?||

||This film doesn’t care, it doesn’t pretend to care, it plainly uses it all as an aesthetic in the most vulgar way possible. I’m not even going to refer to the silly random BS like the product placement at the end lol||

The Name of the Wind - Halfway through ||I finally picked it back up again. Well, sad to say, I can't help but find this just a really boring Harry Potter. I'm slightly past the part where he has to give up some blood to a woman in exchange for money he needs for next semester's tuition. I'm going to finish this, but I hope the second half wows me because nothing, and I do mean nothing, in the first half has caught my attention outside the introduction involving the concept of silence. The characters, worldbuilding, magic system, nothing is catching my attention, sad to say. I've even tried to pay attention to see if the motif of silence is a running theme or something, and I'm still not sure even when he uses the word silence in the book. I don't know what made this novel famous, but it's just not working for me. However, I'm also curious to see if it sticks the landing. I think there's something to learn even from books you don't enjoy all that much.||
