ROW, up to chapter 46 ||It feels like the book is starting to finally pick up since the invasion of the tower. I got some info into Mraize possibly desiring to kill Lift (the green chicken/red chicken debacle), with the possibility of her using the innards of Urithiru to aid the resistance. Navani is learning more about spren/fabrials because of Raboniel. More Eshonai/Venli backstory. Kaladin is fighting back (fuck yes!) and being led by the Sibling. Taravangian may be finally pushing back against Odium. And on that last note, I swear Taravangian indicated or at felt that Odium was human which made me think of the books opening epigraphs talking of Vessels and Shards. So is Odium's power the Shard but his Vessel is a human trapped on Braize? Or was Odium always a human and got a hold of divinity? Either way, fascinating stuff. The following passage has been one of the most intriguing I've read so far; book's getting good.||

Saw The Day the Earth Blew Up, it's nowhere near "the greatest animated feature ever made" BUUUUT definitely worth watching. ||Lots of visual humor and wordplay, some good surprises and character interactions, the romantic subplot actually added to the story instead of detracted (for once), and it doesn't get too bogged down with kiddie stuff.|| Ultimately it felt like watching one of the classic shorts again for the first time.

Additionally it's really hard to believe the Scouts' behavior around Mrs Cobel. They should be demanding answers from her ON SCREEN. Yet they just go along with her when she has given up zero explanations for anything. ||

Finished Rocky ||Having seen a lot of sports anime and especially Hajime no Ippo, I definitely had my expectations shattered watching Rocky. As soon as I felt that this was mostly gonna be a movie focused on just characters talking and getting to know one another after the first act, I changed my expectations and kept an open mind. But even when I was open, I found the character drama uninteresting. It definitely takes its time to explore its cast. I could recognize what the writing was going for with Rocky's internal conflict and every local person's initial beef with the protagonist that makes it an underdog story in a different kind of way, but I just wasn't impressed or felt compelled with any of the characters. They just felt too stereotypical for me to care for them. I'm surprisingly underwhelmed.||

Even when shit hits the fan every time, Rocky is endures it and stays chill in his interacion. I feel a lot more empathy for Rocky here in 2. Rocky ||Rocky's not a story about some dude fighting to become world champion. It's about the hopeless and jaded people of this run down block of Philadelphia, who've given up on everything, all being given a second chance. From the coach getting to live vicariously through Rocky, Adrian learning to love herself, her brother finding his business successful because Rocky is marketing it, and Rocky himself finding redemption. He's done bad things, he never had a choice, and now that he has his one day in the spotlight he just wants to go the distance and prove, at least once, that he can be somebody.

That's why the film doesn't end with him taking the champs belt, it's about him immediately crying out for Adrian. Because that's what matters. Boxing is just the venue being used to frame this story about his community coming to life again.

It's Stallone's most personal movie. Like to the point he used his real life dog for Butkis, and begged the people who adopted him when he moved to California to let Stallone take him back cuz he was the only animal who could do the part.||

Finished Do The Right Thing ||Good movie. The movie spends a large portion exploring the lives of black people and the struggles they face living in a neighborhood where police and white people hold more power. The circumstances, livelihood, and division all build up very well to the breaking point where Radio Raheem starts beef with Sal for the lack of black celebrities on his wall and interrupting his restaurant business by playing his boombox, leading to fights and insults that cause the death of Radio by the hands of the police. That death pushed the central character Mookie to incite a riot, likely knowing that he can't make a difference if he lets things be quiet. He did what he felt was most right to him in that situation. The movie displays a strong statement on how such division and suppression from all different sorts of sides can push people to cause devastating incidents. The final act was just so compelling to watch and powerful. It's 100% a relevant and important movie for these current times. I'm glad I saw this.||

Finished Rocky 3 ||These films keep one-upping themselves with each entry. Rocky III is better than II and I. I loved the emotional scenes, the training scenes, and the final act. The direction is so solid in making the beefing and fighting scenes so exciting. Clubber Lang is one of my favorite boxers from any boxing media ever now. He's just an intimidating but awesome antagonist. I'm happy that Rocky still retains his kindness even after beefing with Clubber. Just a great continuation all around. šŸ”„ ||

Adolescence Episode 1 ||It's really impressive how this whole episode is shot with just one continuously moving camera. Doing it all in one take must be a pain to do. This show is going through a detailed process of how the arrest process from arrest to the investigation of the "murderer" works and it's kinda intriguing.||

Finished Adolescence. I just saw a masterpiece.

||What I watched was just raw reality presented throughout each episode, thanks to the superb actors and the continuously moving camera. It was like I was part of the crime scene watching this happening in real time. It's a tragic story that shows the perspectives of all the people involved in a terrible crime and how they feel about the crime committed. The full process is explored from the arrest of the murderer to the closure of the case. All of these factors helped immensely in strongly empathizing with these characters and how they face life with knowledge of the crime committed. Its message was poignant and powerful. There's lots of scenes that will stick to me for a long time.||

If you have Netflix, you need to watch this.

Finished Robocop ||This was fun. The pacing, satirizing of corporate reporting/marketing, and the action made the movie intriguing. I liked Murphy's arc of discovering his humanity after being retooled as a robot and how he hunts down the terrorist organization that killed him. I got to care about the protagonist and cheered for his victory in the end of the movie. Nice movie.||

I think I wanna see the sequel and the remake eventually down the line.

Maybe a "friendly" competitor (granted, she did try to poison all of humanity, but maybe she's sincere now? Here is my pure, grass-fed headcanon: ROW ||The way they keep trying to hit me over the head with Syl slowly becoming more in tune with herself and her ability to look more and more, uh, "real" or tangible in Roshar coupled with her trying her hardest to understand Kaladin's emotions, makes me think that Brandon is actually going to do it: make it so Syl can become a full human woman so Kaladin can have someone. It doesn't really make that much sense in context, but it's something that keeps nagging at me.||

Finished Rocky 4 ||Yeah... I feel this is the weakest of the franchise so far. I really like the idea of a boxer that fights like a perfect killing machine and Rocky training his damnedest to surpass the likes of him. The problem is that the conflict felt weak. I was disappointed with the writing choice of Apollo's death, because it felt like a retread of Mickey's death. IV cut a central character of the franchise that I found really likable. I disliked Apollo being used as the inciting incident plot device for Rocky to fight Ivan.||

||The overall drama was also weak and lackluster to me. There's a few standout moments I saw within Rocky's development throughout the movie like his post-match speech, but there's just a lack of proper build up and exploration of the characters that makes it hard to care for what Rocky is going through, even with Apollo's death in mind. It's as if the story is glossing over its issues by filling it in with over-the-top training montages and the match itself to hide its weak writing. This movie felt fundamentally flawed overall for me that it doesn't deliver the same emotional, dramatic beats I've come to love Rocky for. ||

I'm definitely seeing the Director's Cut of this movie right after to see if my opinion changes, after I take a short rest. I really don't wanna dislike this entry, but for right now, it's at the very bottom of my rankings.

Finished Rocky IV Ultimate Director's Cut ||The large amount of subtle changes with the soundtrack and scene additions/cuts made this movie go from the weakest to a fine movie to me now. It doesn't change the dislike I had for Apollo's death, but in this director's cut, I felt more of an impact thanks to the new scenes and, most notably, the timing change and how Rocky had no room to throw in the towel this time. The death is much more sudden and more emotional. There's added stuff to the funeral scene showcasing Rocky's emotional empathy that puts me on board on Rocky's journey to defeat the Russian punching machine.||

||The main fight itself is more hype now. There were subtle changes in the fighting scenes here that gave Rocky more punches shot at Ivan that better displayed his improvement from the hardcore training. The fight was changed to make the fight overall more evenly matched, making the tension of the battle more exciting and unpredictable. In the climatic round, I was actually rooting for Rocky this time and felt more satisfaction when he won. ||

||This was a more focused and more dramatic cut that improved the movie overall. The only thing that kinda sucked was the exclusion of the robot, but I think that exclusion helped me focus on the drama of Apollo and Rocky more. ||

I liked this cut more than the original.

I will definitely see both the original and workprint cut of Rocky V tomorrow. I'm prepared for the worst, so I'll go with low expectations, but also with an open mind. The workprint cut is apparently much better from the answers I seen on Reddit and is an unofficial cut done by Avildsen himself, but also the current quality of the Workprint is shit. šŸ˜“

Spoilers for Return to Oz, and related Oz books (the first three) below. I ran over the word count.

||Brilliant adaption of the books that almost seamlessly fits their stories in with the MGM film, with some original elements woven in that actually make more sense than the original novels. The characters they merged together are better for it, the cast of characters they chose were the best Oz characters that didn't have starring roles yet and make for a great party, its ridiculous how well everything fit together given they're coming from three different source materials. Marvelous and Ozma wouldnt make strong films independently and the way they combined the strengths of both into something that does is so skillful I have nothing but praise for it.

And the way it brings the illustrations and world of the novels to LIFE. The stop motion might be uncanny at times but to see these characters perfectly replicated and so carefully brought to motion is really impressive. And the mix of practical effects was also novel, the claymation Nomes are a stroke of genius. This movie visually comes from the same school as Neverending Story and Labyrinth but it's got a voice of its own that makes it unforgettable.

But also the elephant in the room is that by combining the threats of two novels into a single film with more elaborate action sequences and having to address the "it's all a dream" baggage from the 1937 film means the movie has almost no time in its run to actually keep any of the lackadaisical and whimsical feeling from the books scripts. The travel banter, the slapstick comedy with the Nomes and Jack, the endearing relationship between Dorothy and Ozma. The roles of the Scarecrow and Nick Chopper becoming non existent because the apocalyptic Land of Ev and the coup of the Land of Oz became the same story. It's a dark and tense adventure movie based on a comedy fairy tale for small children and wholly inappropriate for the intended demographic of the stories, while also being unfaithful to the tone of the iconic film it's pretending to be a direct sequel to.||

||The film does try to address this, to its credit? It's framed as coming to terms with childhood nostalgia. But Oz in this movie is so dreary, who would WANT to come back?

Also? Kinda mentioned it offhand already but Ozma stinks in the film. A largely neglible macguffin who doesn't add a lot to the film itself with a personality that doesn't go beyond being a damsel in distress. For a series so memorable in part for its strong and identifiable female characters nothing about her relationship with Dorothy ends up feeling earnest in the film.

And that's because by streamlining these stories she became collateral damage. In the books she's introduced as a peasant boy, one cursed with an enchantment, who learns he's the wonderful princess of the land after having an entire journey of hardships of his own.

When Tip becomes Ozma in the books his personality changes a bit alongside with his gender and framing, I guess because even a trans coded story is going to be confined to traditional gender roles in the 1900s, but Ozma never became a frail or weak character. She leads armies to invade enemy kingdoms because it's the right thing to do, she takes back her own city, a lot of why she relates to Dorothy is because their similar upbringings and the journeys they individually went on make them relatable to each other in a way the other Ozians simply aren't. They're friends for life and that relationship is the heart of those novels. And those roots are never forgotten, her main flaws are being too stubborn and self assured at times.

So adapting the story that was Ozmas namesake, giving half her comrades and her own son to Dorothy, and stripping the character down to nothing feels a little rotten to me. I think it's her only film appearance too? For the deuteragonist of the franchise she deserves a hell of a lot better.

The erasure of Glinda is also funny but she's a bitch and the film didn't have the runtime to include her anyway so that one's forgivable lol||

I just feel so, so bad for her, 'cause I've been loving her chapters and she keeps experiencing "one step forward, two steps back." I'm praying she pulls something off, 'cause I do not want Dalinar or his Radiants coming to save her like some princess trapped in a castle (quite literally at this point). Also, I have had a very hard time picturing Lasting Integrity in my head (which I think is the point Brandon is going for).||

Rocky V ||I love this bonding between Rocky and his son. I really like how the story uses Tommy as a way to not only help Rocky get back to passionately loving boxing and give the boxer a different angle of the sport through teaching a pupil, but also recognize his responsibility as an adult and parent. It made Rocky's rekindling with his son all the more effective.||

Finished Rocky V ||I loved the ending where Rocky beated the shit out of the business guy. I was afraid that Rocky might lose what made him so likable, but he's stayed consistent, favoring his family and friends over business opportunities and wealth. Tommy was an excellent plot device into helping Rocky look at boxing from a different perspective, but also helping him become an actual adult and parent. I loved this movie. It's a different change of pace of story that I enjoyed a lot. I don't think V matches the greatness and hype of III and II, but I love it more than I and IV.||

Seeing him throughout these movies, he was a piece of shit and he did burden Rocky a lot financially, but even then, seeing him realize he wasted his time just hits on another level of relatability. I absolutely love that Rocky still treats Paulie respectfully as his best friend even then. His core kindness has remained consistent after all these movies, it's so phenomenal man. ||

Finished Rocky Balboa ||A god damn amazing movie man. I really loved the themes of old age and wanting to take the opportunity to come back to boxing again. There's so many scenes have resonated with me so hard as someone getting older and I loved Rocky's development here in this movie the most. The final training montage got me so hyped man and it's actually so impressive how Stallone manages to stay physically fit even after more than a decade. This movie encapsulates the Rocky movies' best strengths and made such a strong, satisfactory conclusion. Rocky Balboa is near-perfection and a new top movie favorite of mine.||

||The only things that kinda hampered this from being a 5 star movie is that it lingers a bit too long on Rocky reminiscing on the past and some of the camera choreography. I understand that this was trying to replicate how boxing television was in its time, but the switch to movie to tv footage can be jarring and off-putting at times for me. I think Stallone should have took full advantage of the movie medium and dramatized the hell out of this fight with movie camerawork to make it more hype. ||

||Way before I seen these movies, I'd see the Rocky franchise on the internet and think, "These are just old boxing movies with lots of cash-grab sequels" and not think much of them. But now seeing em all, this franchise's movies is crafted with so much love and personal care. This is one of the few movie series that I can say is one of the most well-written overarching stories I've watched that's maintained solid consistency and remained emotional ride throughout each movie. I'm so glad I gave Rocky a chance. šŸ„Š šŸ„¹ ||

ROW, up to chapter 87 ||Now that I'm getting pretty close to the end, I'm pretty confident in this book being my least favorite of the four I've read. I don't know how to explain it other than it feels like the plot meanders for quite a bit. But, like, I know the plot is moving forward at times, it just doesn't always feel like its moving forward in a way I find the most enjoyable. Clearly there are important lore reveals happening, but so much of the war with Dalinar, the events in Shadesmar, and the happenings in Urithiru seem to not be the most captivating. It's still a great book, don't get me wrong, it just isn't capturing the magic for me the way the first three books did.||
