yea definitely. This issue kind of pretty much exists in nearly every season, your enjoyment ends up heavily dependant on how good those episodics are, and sometimes they really are not good.

The character of Doctor feels different. || A development Doctor undergoes in Eccleston's run was beginning to lose his rage/hatred/w/e and trying to help anyone to avoid extinction. Even the Daleks to a point later. Matt's doctor is very different in this regard || DW s5

Shogun S1E10/S1 END ||Alright, where to start. I think this is a fantastic series.

Gonna try to make this a long one since it's been a while since I've done these, hopefully the formatting doesn't look fucked on Discord so I apologize ahead of time.

After not engaging with any Japanese media for a long time, this was a nice refreshing look at genuinely great storytelling. To start, I think the intro is really spicy. Reminds me of other cool openings. Super catchy and I love how it ties to the samurai armor and map of the world Blackthorne draws.

One thing that was immediately apparent to me was the dialogue of this series. Reminded me of Game of Thrones in that it's extremely to engage with. There's not a lot of series that I could see my parents watching despite it being a different language 90% of the time and that's amazing. Every scene feels carefully crafted together.

The biggest godsend of the show for me was the cinematography. There's so many beautiful establishing shots that give us a grandiose view of each of the towns and villages. I really love that first shot of Osaka. Reminded me of a lot of other fantasy movies doing that as well. A lot of technical achievements too. I was amazed at how they were apparently able to film all of this in Vancouver. The shots of the civilians working and gardening in the background. The fog and mistiness of the air, you can actually see how much they put into these sets. Especially all of the Japanese rooms and shit. I don't know the names but that was sick. The detail of their armor was really nice. I like how immediate the threat of talking back to these people was exemplified. The score definitely helps here as well.

I love the fact that it isn't a series afraid of showing the brutality of this time period. The combat was cool, it was fast, and I didn't feel like any of it was bullshit. (I kinda have a bone to pick with series that get swordfighting wrong, it's usually way quicker than what people imagine). I love the choreography and that assassin scene in one of the earlier episodes was awesome.

Something that is sorely missed in shows that have naval scenes is that to me, I never want a massive explanation on how the boats are used/work, I just want more stakes with the sea involved. I love that the first and third episodes gave me that.

I really like the main cast. They all come across as strong characters with their own motivations and goals. I actually ended up liking Yabushige the most. The fact that he was able to get so far despite conspiring against Toranaga like 80% of the time is hilarious. He gets what he deserves in the end but I like that he sort of gets closure with his lord.

Blackthorne and Mariko are obviously the heart of the story. It's interesting, I thought that the romance was going to end up being really cringey and forced but it actually came from a place of understanding and endearment between the two. There was a moment when I thought Mariko wasn't gonna die but I think the story kind of needed it to happen. Death surrounds the whole series anyways and she wanted it. It's sad but I like that it's also a pretty perfect push for Blackthorne to have more reason to fight against the people that hurt him. I love how good he is with his pistols, just spinning and shooting. That entire sequence in episode nine was nuts and Mariko dying also works because it was all a part of "Crimson Sky." I really like that that was a really digestible plot point. I know my parents would've been lost LOL.||

Shogun S1E10/S1 END cont ||Fuji is also a fun character to watch. Her story starts out so sad but I love that she really makes a name for herself. I didn't expect her to act the way she did towards the "Anjin" and I love that despite clearly hating him, she actually grew to not vomit at every instance she was around him. That last scene this episode where they pour their loved ones ashes into the water was perfect.

Toranaga is probably the biggest reason anyone watches this. The trailers and promotional material all hint at this dude who knows what the fuck he's doing. The political rivalry between him and Ishido is neat. I like how Sugiyama was the one dude to actually disagree and get out (unsuccessfully). I wanted to see more about Ohno but I guess that'll be saved for the next season. But yeah, Toranaga being a capable leader was fun. I actually started to fall for his bait in those later episodes. I didn't realize until a little later into episode nine that the Crimson Sky plan was Mariko giving her life up to convince Ochiba to lend the Heir's army to Toranaga. Actual 1000 IQ play. And that's another thing too, this story ends up making death and sacrifice have a lot of meaning. I really love that. It's not afraid to take risks, it's not afraid to kill off characters, and it makes me feel excited to watch/rewatch because I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. I've only ever really felt that way about shows like Arcane or Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul.

Toranaga saving John's life from the assassin and John saving his after the landslide/eqarthquake. I like how they work together despite the fact that John clearly doesn't want to be here anymore and is just like "You're holding me hostage, give me back my fucking men already, ya cunt!" and Toranaga is just like ehhh... no, you're too useful. I like how John plays both sides and his admiration for his men is super commendable. I like how the show isn't afraid to show how the men care about each other. If anything, the women feel like they were constantly taking the stage and one-upping them. It was awesome. No one really felt out of balance.

I didn't even talk about Buntaro. Despite that guy being a horrible abuser, I like that he seemingly does his best to make up with Mariko and John. Fumbles the ball with that first one but at the very least, he looks like he can work with John in the future. I really want to know if John is going to learn how to fight with katanas. That'd be cool.

I think the background characters really sell this show as well. Muraji, Uejirou, and the Portuguese dudes made the world feel alive. People mattered and when/if they died, you really felt that. The decapitated heads, the seppuku, the arrows, and cannonfire. I loved the brutality.

I hope (I think they're getting a season two) that they continue to use most of these actors. It really felt like everything came together with the music, set, and filming but damn, those actors were good. From what I understand, most of them were Japanese actors, so I like the authenticity. Also, the Father Martin and Rodrigues dudes were really funny to me. The way that they talked, their mannerisms, inflections, demeanour. All class-A shit. I look forward to more of this stuff. 10/10||

Shogun S1E10/S1 END ||I fucking forgot to mention the costumes like a dumbass. The samurai ones were sick but even just the kimonos and the short little swords (I forget their names) that they use to commit seppuku. It all checks out from what I looked up. They also have a "Making of" series I need to watch. Love when shows go above and beyond to make it all feel real.||

Shogun s1 end || For me, the show had decreased in quality (mostly pacing issues) after Toranaga and co escaped Ishido. After the swimming episode. Even with the earthquake aside, he was really in a difficult position. He didn't really stand up to the name of the master plotter or w/e they called him due to that. The screen presence he had in the first few eps had really decreased with the latter. If a master plotter has to depend on his son's death and his most loyal retainer's death to carry out a plot, then I won't call him that.
Also regarding the pacing issues, the first three episodes had moved the plot alongside exploring the characters and the various themes that each episodes had focused on. Between that and Toranaga's retainer's death episode, the episodes had very little of plot progression, and in the whole it felt like a 8 episode show extended into 10 ||

My understanding for the Toranaga thing was that his son's death was a fluke and not a centerpiece of the plan, Toranaga just took advantage of it. The old loyal dude dying was a ploy to get the bad guys to believe he was falling apart along with Yabushige. I think the Crimson Sky plan was changed the moment Saezi showed up (the brother) because it wasn't feasible. Like it was something they thought about but didn't have a way to execute it until Nagakado accidentally dies.||

I plan on rewatching it though, so maybe I missed something

The problem is that this is one of those historic situations that the Doctor should just not be placed in at all. To an extent, yes it makes sense for them to put things right in place for what is apparently a fixed point in time, but on the other hand after all the conflicts that they've been involved in and resolved, and how they've been characterized, the Doctor with their friends being actively complicit in systemic racism is just awful man. Its just something that should've been avoided no matter what.||

Dr Who S11E3 || We know The Doctor can't fix this herself, she cant erase this, so I don't think she should even be put in a situation where she has to go along with this injustice and just be a mere observer. It just goes against who The Doctor is.||

Dr Who S11E6 || Thought they pretty much nailed the tragedies of the partition here, have personally heard many similar stories from my elders about that time as a Pakistani too so this was a very familiar and touching story to me for that reason. I had a few issues but they werent necessarily big deals, like I thought they could have definitely cast more actual Pakistanis as Pakistanis here lol.||

||oh also that line about the Doctor knowing Mountbatten was a bit unnecessary too, he's the one tasked with the responsibility of handling the partition and he does a terrible job at it, the Doctor could actually fix this situation if she wanted to by simply telling him a few things, but oh well||

Dr Who S11E7 || Does the people quota need to even exist? The humans here have pretty torturous jobs considering the regulations and their roles can easily be covered by a more efficient automated system. The episode ends with even more people being promised these torturous jobs and that just seems so fucking stupid man. The workers are victims of this system & you are just creating more and more victims lmao. Its perfectly fine for humans to have that desire to still work while these automated systems exist but I just wouldn't have used this kind of a job for that point!!!||

the lore from the game was like, the framework, basically

their characters in league are like, post-arcane

league's lore is just sort of a giant clusterfuck of multiple iterations. jinx/vi ended up similar to their lore, ekko sort of similar to his initial lore, viktor and jayce got fully revamped backstories, singed and warwick are pretty similar, heimerdinger didn't really have involved lore but his personality is similar
