Plus the chapter with Elayne almost sacrificing herself to nuke the gateway has been my favorite moment so far in this book ||

Finished Hitchcock's Psycho ||Cool film. Music was on point and it was pretty novel to see how a psycho got away with a clean murder, and how he ended up the way he was as explained by psychologist at the end of the film. The film knows how to keep the tension high all throughout.||

Im sure RJ is setting something up with them but my god I cannot stand reading these Sevanna chapters. Most often they’re useless. Sammael giving Sevanna an oath rod is the most interesting thing to happen but all that’s happened is that the Shaido have been killed more from Sammael giving them basically teleportation boxes. There’s nothing interesting or even compelling about the Shaido now that Couladin is dead. ||

Even with his bullshit ambivalence (“I’m just a blacksmith”) at least it’s interesting again. Nothing from the Shaido chapters hold my attention. Saw The Last Unicorn ||I'm not sure how I feel about this movie. I hate to admit it, but the clumsily written and voiced dialogue for characters straight up made it hard for me to understand what the film was trying to get across. I think what I got out of it was consistent themes of animal abuse/extinction and staying your true self to have the courage to fight, but it didn't feel natural or cohesive. I thought the first third of the story was fantastic and was building up to something special, but by the end, I was confused.||

||It was at least kinda enjoyable because the journey to getting to stopping the Red Bull had moments that were cheesy and unexpected. But otherwise, I'm mixed.||

When I was watching this film, I got the vibes of an anime at multiple points with how the backgrounds were drawn, turns out there were apparently animators from Ghibli that worked on this before they formed the studio, which is pretty cool.

Last Unicorn ||The film is about loss of innocence with age and experience, and the absolute fear of death and desensitization (or appreciation) towards life that comes alongside it. The unicorn is blissful innocence personified living in a happy disney land devoid of all the worlds problems and as her journey continues, from her experiences with cruelty to Mollys outburst at her coming to her and fulfilling her childhood dreams NOW to her kafka transformation into a human the films always exploring those ideas.

Its told as a fairy tale and not looking for an internal logic to its worldbuilding, which is why motifs like the red bull and crashing waves are personified and treated literally. King Haggard is such a lost and lonely old man that the joy of childhood innocence he feels witnessing the unicorns, as hollow as it is, is the only thing that gives his emotionless life meaning. The unicorn is unable to go back to the creature she once was even after returning to normal and finishing her journey, because you cant undo lessons learned. And life isnt a story with a clean resolution where all problems are solved, tales are spun eternally as long as you're alive .||

I'm not sure if it's the best at showing that sort of broken innocence theme though, I think other series I seen have done it better and as said earlier, the clumsy dialogue makes it hard for me to see it as the best executed.||

Finished the Fallout TV series ||For my first delve into Fallout as a whole, it certainly was pretty interesting. The whole world has just a whole bunch of factions that seem to think obliterating a society will help save their people, to a point where even the dad thinks what he's doing was genuinely right (he's not). And as screwed as that noseless cowboy was, he seems to be having the grander picture on what's to come, and I def wanna know more about him. Hoping the second season can ramp up the plot even more to develop these characters notably. I liked what I saw. ||

||Oh yeah, the one aspect I liked a lot was how a lot of characters end up being very morally grey in general just because of how resource dire the world currently is. Makes the cast overall a little more interesting, seeing who'll betray one another just to survive.||

Finished TMNT: Mutant Mayhem ||For what it's worth, I kinda liked this interpretation of TMNT. I like that the turtles genuinely talk and act like real teenagers, and how they go about resolving the conflict of mutants vs. humans was pretty fun to watch. It had a decent plot and had every main character go through somewhat interesting arcs. The way they set up the movie in general definitely makes me feel it's a direct allegory to racism, which works in execution. I liked what I watched, though I wasn't personally amazed. ||

just finished Ace in the Hole 1951

||that was a rather unpleasant watch||

||Like in terms of presentation of what it wants to present, A+, but I would never see that again||

||Part of my reaction may have come from my misunderstanding of the color scheme after hearing this was film gris (gray) and not film noir.||

||I was like, okay, this is gray not black, so it must be lighter! And then I found out it was like, the opposite 😅 ||

||It sort of reminded me of There Will Be Blood ("this is my oil field", powerful men in love with their power) + The Great Gatsby (horrible dishonest marriages and the moral corruption of capitalism)||

||But even when i was watching TWBB and reading TGG, I felt some kind of way. There was a sense of heartbreak and like, tragedy because some of the characters you could initially root for despite knowing how it would probably end||

||I couldn't empathize with a single main character in this film. The moral center (the newspaper owner) is standing to the side, and he comes into play at the start and at the end. Rather effectively if I'm being honest. Again, A+ presentation.||

||I'm sold on the idea of like, people with no past, no moral compass, no tear-jerking flashback bullshit. I just can't connect to them through a TV screen, I guess is all.||

Parasite ||Reread this gem, really fun story. Jumping between characters that you barely get to know, while certainly risky, does add to this idea of desperation the novel wants to portray. The despair and death surrounding the narrative and setting follows each group of characters as we see them lose and lose and lose forcing readers to yearn for that triumphant end. I think my favorite characters involve the last group, that little bit of romance and strategy was enough to keep me reading and I really liked the ending even though it leaves open a door we could've seen close.||

Wrapup of stuff I watched recently:

• Rebel Moon part 1 and part 2: Dogshit in every way. It has 0 substance and goes all out in the style which is again another thing which holds it back due to how overused the slowmotions are. || There are several minutes of continuous slowmotions and slow mo within slow mo ||
• Didi: Very fun movie with the last third being really emotionally resonating. Would recommend.
• Madame Web: Actually not as bad as everyone was making it out to be. Dakota johnson doesn't know how to act for like most of the movie and dialogues are laughably bad and it's editing is p bad despite having some really cool shots. But It turned out to be p average experience by the end. Maybe Rebel Moon increased my threshold of bad stuff
• Finished rewatching last six eps of DW s4, and also the Christmas Specials. Peak Doctor Who.

Reading Wrap-up:

• The Will of the Many by James Islington. It's an unique world with a very unique societal structure. || An unique magic system which is very intrisically connected too the world that the world feels very alive. But the issue is that we are never properly shown or told how it works. It's a school setting so we listen to various classifications and theories and applications and what not of the magic system but we are like just shown the categories than properly shown the magic system. It's just very disjointed in terms of various plot elements and the core mystery isn't even handled much. It just focuses on the wrong story to tell in the right world. But given the epilogue, it seemed like it was just doing ground work for the future books. And I believe he can do the story justice given the good stuff in this book and his other series.|| Book 2 is gonna come out next year. Gonna be reading it. 3.75/5

• All Systems Red by Martha Wells (Murderbot diaries Book 1): My favorite book of this year. It's written so amazingly and the voice of the main character is just so refreshing and fun to read. It's just also very wholesome and funny. || The world and the scifi elements aren't in that deep focus but still even with spending a lot of time to try to pick it apart, I couldn't get anything to be messy in it ||. If the rest of the series end of being as good or even better, then it's probably gonna replace Discworld as my fav series. 5/5
