I saw the examples Yuno showed and I saw you talk about starting with a circle then a straight line from top to bottom. Also yes Kitty I think I might need more tips in dm, i could try today and use your examples (like the circles) and see what I can do. In my mind I sometimes visualize what I’m gonna draw first for the character or what to go over in the beginning, so today I think i might try practicing how to do bases. also I brought up Oda's style but really he is more standard than people realize. he can draw quite realistic and his drawing is often IS realistic with slight exaggerations only. so it's still a good place to start when drawing one piece characters.

That's a good idea to do for your art. If some part of art creation is holding you back from work, then don't do it. I stopped doing lineart last year and my productivity improved

From what I’ve seen, this kind of rendering is usually done with just a round or egg brush, lasso tool, airbrush/ smudge (not sure if this artist actually uses that method, though.) The artists usually have a good understanding of black-and-white values. A lot of pros like game artists start in grayscale and then add color using blending modes.

I think a good way to look at it is that you can use whatever technique to convey the thing you want to put across.

you can do that with perfect line art or even shakey line art (look no further than one piece itself), heck even bleach have imperfect lines most of the time, the difference is that the sum feels cohesive even if you individually pick the lines, they're shakey af.

and don't forget you can also don't use lines at all, real life don't have line art, paintings will not have them depending on the style and level of realism as well, just using values (the grayscale technique is related), rendering, color, lighting, can do it just fine.

I'll include some examples of shakey lineart, from one piece, bleach, kagurabachi (I will put spoilers for other series) as well as some art by Oda that he recently started doing color paintings with minimal line art. (sorry a bit of a spam and text wall)

i remember in high school i would always do art studies on facial parts that i felt i needed to work on, for example, i remember doing a bunch of nose and mouth studies in class so much that my teacher would call me out on it 😭

same thing goes for parts of the body, if you want to get better at drawing different physiques or specific parts, focus on drawing just that for a day or two, until you feel confident in drawing that specific thing

or if you want to work on fixing your art looking stiff, try studies of dynamic poses and focus on the shapes and flow of lines you see in the pose to make it easier to draw

after drawing for 20+ years, i can confidently say that getting better at drawing is equal to the amount of effort you put in

It’s a WIP/attempt but this is my first time TRYING to draw anatomy and dynamic poses. The character is Jinbe since he’s my favorite character and I wanted to learn more about his body and how it was shaped so yea. (I made a few errors with my measurements for his wooden sandals but thanks to @kindred tartan they have been helping and guiding me through the process and correcting my mistakes! So I really want to thank Kitty for helping me sooo much, thanks once again for helping me get this far! I’m going to keep working on it later today! (I’ll eventually add the fixes but until then I’ll keep working on his upper body and the rest for now)
